Northern Ecosystems
Go wild with this up-close look at
nature!
A newly designed and renovated
Northern Ecosystems brings you to the
heart of a forest, wetland, and lakes and

Riding with Meteorites Atlas Copco Theatre
A special exhibition in the MacLean
Engineering Gallery Jan. 17 - Apr. 25, 2011
Where would Sudbury be without
meteorites? After all, the Sudbury Basin,
rich in many precious minerals, has one
giant meteorite to thank for today’s
resources. Riding with Meteorites leads
you, along with astronaut Teo and his
dog Laika, on a discovery of celestial
bodies on a potential collision course
with Earth. Visit the asteroid belt located
between Mars and Jupiter (the solar
system’s meteorite ‘nursery’) and enjoy
interactive games, video clips, and new
technologies designed to let the whole
family discover the fascinating world of
meteorites.
SiO2:
The Science of Glass
A special exhibition in the MacLean
Engineering Gallery May 7 - season close
Discover the origins and surprising
physical and chemical properties of
glass! SiO2: The Science of Glass tells
us about the various types of glass, their
properties and the many methods used
in producing glass on an industrial scale.
It also explains the role glass has played
in the history of civilization and reminds
us of its daily uses. From its production
to its leading-edge innovations, glass
will shine through its ubiquitous
brilliance and contrasts.
The 125-seat Altas Copco Theatre
features exciting films projected on a
12 m (38 ft.) wide by 7 m (22.5 ft.) high
screen with “next generation”
high-definition digital images and
resolution. In 2011, witness the power
of Volcano. Volcanoes have a fearsome
reputation. In reality, they are the most
important force in the creation of the
planet as we know it today. From the
series Earth - Power of the Planet, this
program shows how the heat that fuels
volcanoes also drives some of the most
fundamental processes on the planet.
Run time: 22 minutes.
Volcano is a BBC/National Geographic
Channel US/ZDF co-production.
Rocks to Riches
A Science North Production
A multimedia presentation in the
Xstrata Nickel Gallery
With one visit you’ll never see your
kitchen sink or plumbing pipes the same
way! This walk-through theatre features
state-of-the-art presentation technology
that takes you step-by-step through the
processing of nickel and copper, from
the “mill” to the “smelter” and then the
“refinery”.
Plus
Let the kids play in a three-level
miniature mine using tools and
equipment that are just their size!
Collect and exchange rocks and
minerals in the Rockhound Lab and
pan for gold, like a Yukon prospector.
Take a seat and experience Nickel City
Stories, an engaging object theatre
presentation about the discovery of
nickel, and Sudbury’s connections with
the likes of Thomas Edison and the
Apollo Astronauts. Don’t forget to have

Where Rocks Tell Stories
Sudbury’s geological features are
world-renowned and for good reason!
From the fiery impact of a massive
meteorite some 1.85 billion years ago,
to the discovery of one of the richest
mineral deposits on the planet, to
the mysterious visits of Apollo crews
before their lunar voyages, the story is
out of this world!

High Falls in Onaping to learn more
about the nature of the meteorite
impact, the origin of the Sudbury Basin
and the geological forces that have
shaped the rocks of the Sudbury area.

What isn’t “cause for celebration”?
Our passion for celebrating the
seasons, and sharing our proud
Aboriginal, Francophone and ethnic

almost always come wrapped up
together.

Greater Sudbury and beyond.
Step into an A.Y. Jackson painting
at High Falls.
Visit a real railroad town. Climb
aboard Bullet-Nosed Betty and her
procession – a real time machine.
Hike Silver Peak at Killarney
Provincial Park or circle Manitoulin,
the largest fresh water island in the
world.

aerial tour of the Sudbury Basin.

Budd Car Adventure
VIA Rail Station, Elgin St.
1-888-842-7245 or 705-673-1138
VIA Rail’s Lake Superior (Budd
Car) is a “best-kept” secret! The
self-propelled Rail Diesel Car
makes tri-weekly runs between
Sudbury and White River. The
train passes myriad lakes and
scenic wilderness areas with
scheduled stops at numerous picturesque communities and resorts
as well as flag stops, offering paddling enthusiasts access to canoe
routes along the Spanish River.
The trip takes approximately nine
hours. Passengers can book overnight accommodations in White
River and return to Sudbury the
next day.

Revisit a time when rails and ties
connected people and communities.
Admire Bullet-Nosed Betty, the
streamlined 6077 steam engine – one
of 20 ever manufactured. Imagine a
train whistle signaling students back to
class as you walk through the School
on Wheels. Climb up high into the
Snow Plow that cleared the tracks. Visit
a boxcar home – a converted Baggage
Car. Learn about the mining, lumbering
and heritage of the Sudbury area. Sip a
cuppa in the Tea Room and check out
the daily specials and local favourites
at the M & R Grill - a popular spot for
hungry railroaders.
A.Y. Jackson Lookout

Municipal Rd. 55 and Hwy. 144

High Falls in Onaping cascades
55 metres (150 feet) into the Sudbury
Basin. The spectacular view captured
the imagination of A.Y. Jackson and
was immortalized in his painting
“Spring on the Onaping River”.
Hike the trails around the falls, picture
perfect anytime, but spectacular in the
fall. There’s more to this “picture” than
meets the eye! The Sudbury Basin is
a meteorite impact site that lured the
Apollo Astronauts to the area before
they embarked on their voyage to the
moon. They examined shattercones
– shocked rocks that were formed by
the terrestrial impact 1.8 billion years
ago. The Visitor Information Centre is
equipped with picnic and washroom
facilities. There is also a self-guided
geological walking tour onsite. Open
seasonally.

Killarney

and west on Hwy. 637
See map page 5
Visit the class of the La Cloche – the
scenery that inspired the famed Group
of Seven. The landscape of Killarney is
spectacular, with pink granite islands
and shorelines and the white quartzite
hills of La Cloche Mountains. Killarney
Provincial Park offers backcountry
hiking and canoeing at its best. Climb
Silver Peak, one of the highest points
in the province, or launch your kayak
for a Georgian Bay paddle adventure.
The vistas aren’t the only rewards
though. When hunger hits, the catch of
the day awaits you at dockside in the
historic Town of Killarney.

Spend a day on Manitoulin, the
world’s largest fresh water island.
The island’s quaint towns, museums,

a relaxing excursion. The Cup and

Current, is one of the most popular
hikes in Ontario.

on the skis for cross-country and
downhill thrills and rev the engines
for back country adventures.
