Installing your flexible pond liner
Ponds and water features come in all shapes, sizes and styles and the desire to create
your own water garden is, understandably, very strong. If you’ve never had a pond
before, there are one or two things you need to know before rushing to the garden
shed for your spade.
1. Mark the outline of the pond and use as a
guide to remove any turf and all of the soil
down to the first shelf level at a depth of
around 23 cm (9”).
Position
Part of your preparations involve choosing a site and several factors must be taken into
consideration. The most important is correct orientation for sunlight. This is essential
where a biological balance is to be maintained, the energy of the sun being vital both
to fish, in activating them by warm water temperatures and to plants for correct
growth. It can also be just as important a consideration for other forms of water
feature as the interaction of sunlight and water is often the main attraction.
2. Use a plank and spirit level to make sure the
hole is level. Check for any stones or tree
roots that could puncture the liner.
Power
From a practical point of view you must consider the best position in relation to the
water and electricity supplies as it could be very expensive to lead supplies over long
distances. When installing electrics always use an appropriate R.C.D (trip switch). If in
doubt please consult an electrician.
Mark out the position of your inner, deeper
section using string or wooden pegs as
before and dig out the inner section making
sure the bottom is level.
Stage 2
3. It is very important to cover the hole
with liner underlay; this is a fast way
of protecting the pond liner from stones
or roots.
Position the liner evenly over the hole.
Place bricks or other weights around the
overlap and begin to slowly fill the pond
with water.
Stage 1
4. When the pond is full trim off any excess
liner leaving an overlap of at least 15cm
(6”). The surplus can be hidden beneath
the rocks, turf or paving slabs bedded on
water. Paving slabs should protrude slightly
to hide the liner from view.
Stage 3
S
Stage 4
Safety
If there are young children in the family it would be wiser to position the pond where
it can be easily seen from the house for safety reasons.

4. Position the pond in the hole and firmly
backfill with sand or soil. Your pond is now
ready to fill with water and finish with your
choice of edging.

THE NATURAL POND
POND LINER
Why not build a wildlife pond?
Every garden benefits from a water feature and even the smallest pond can attract wildlife.
Pond Liner Rolls & Rubber Liners
Pond Liner Rolls
Lifetime guarantee. Made from 0.5mm thick
PVC Highly resistant to UV light, heat and cold.
Given the loss of wild habitats, garden ponds have become increasingly
important to wildlife and have saved amphibians such as Frogs and Toads
from disappearing in many areas.
Available in 7 widths: • 2m roll width
• 3m roll width
• 4m roll width
• 5m roll width
• 6m roll width
• 7m roll width
• 8m roll width
Although many animals will visit a variety of water features,
a well-designed wildlife pond will attract a wide range of native creatures
and enable them to thrive and reproduce, to the benefit of both garden
and gardener. Frogs and Toads will help control Slugs and Snails, Dragon
Flies have a hearty appetite for mosquitoes and other small flying-insects
and garden birds will benefit from somewhere to drink and bathe.
Well-designed wildlife ponds should have easy access for small animals and shallow areas for bathing and drinking. When using a liner a shallow
bowl-shaped cross-section is ideal, with a depth of 60cm / 24 inches adequate for overwintering life. Species such as the common toad and the
legally protected great crested newt favour deeper ponds and can be hard to tempt to new habitats. For most species, shallow areas that warm up
quickly in Spring are a key factor. Larger pools
are generally more attractive to wildlife but any
size will quickly attract life.
Small pre-formed pools can be used and are
frequently designed with wildlife in mind. Where
these feature steep sides, some careful planning
may be necessary to enable access and prevent
visiting garden animals such as hedgehogs
from drowning.
The best wildlife ponds feature native aquatic
plants. These are readily available and in many
cases very attractive as well as providing the
right habitat for native insects. Some of these
plants can be rather rampant and prone to taking
over a small pond. A good book on pond plants
can reveal which species are best avoided in a
restricted space. Non-native species can be
added but avoid invasive plants such as New
Zealand Stonecrop (Crassula Helmsii) & other
aggressive aliens.
Although many sources advise adding a layer of soil to the pond, this can often lead to nutrient problems and algae blooms. For this reason, confine
plants to aquatic baskets and if you wish to add a substrate, silver sand is a better choice as it is inert and nutrient free. Using tap water can also add
phosphates and other nutrients that can cause green-water or blanketweed blooms. Rainwater is a better option for the wildlife pond. Duckweed can
be a nuisance if allowed to establish itself and will quickly shade all life in the pond if not removed by hand.
The limiting factor of most ponds is the presence of fish. Although adding to the beauty of the garden, most fish will eat important invertebrate life
and insects that serve to keep a wildlife pond in good shape. In the absence of fish water fleas (Daphnia) will consume green-water algae and help
maintain clear water. Fish will also make a meal of tadpoles and newt larvae. As in nature, fish can be part of a balanced community in larger ponds
but given the lack of pumps and filtration are best avoided in smaller scale set-ups. Where appropriate Golden Rudd (Scardinius erythropthalmus)
are the best choice and are a domesticated form of a native species. Small fishes such as Sticklebacks (Gasterosteus aculeatus) can be very efficient
predators and Minnows (Phoxinus phoxinus) require moving water to thrive.

Blagdon Pond Underlay & Repair Kit
Pond Underlay
Underlay is essential to achieve
the maximum lifespan from any
liner. Underlay is actually cheaper
than sand and is made from polyester which will not rot and
attack the liner.
Pond liner repair kit
One of the benefits of a flexible
liner is the ease with which you
can repair accidental damage.

MORE TIPS ABOUT YOUR POND
Pond Capacity
To avoid over-dosing when adding any medication or treatment to your pond, it is
vital for you to know the water capacity. When installing a pre-formed pond the water
capacity will be shown on the packaging but it is always a good idea to make a note
of the details. For rectangular or circlular shaped ponds there are a few simple
calculations to work out the capacity.

Aquamax Eco Filter Pumps
BioSmart Complete Filtration Systems
For the more environmentally conscious or just those who wish to save
money, technology is here to help.
The OASE BioSmart filtration systems provide exceptional filtration for all
garden ponds, up to 24000 litres (see table).
AQUAMAX ECO
The Aquamax Eco filtration and watercourse pumps feature an energyefficient servo-motor, which saves up to 40% of the running costs compared to traditional pumps.
• guaranteed clear and healthy water
• biological and mechanical cleaning
• integrated UVC to combat green water
• easy maintenance with cleaning handles on each foam filter
• pollution level indicator
• sludge drain for removing collected waste material
• temperature gauge
• supplied with an Oase FP pump or Aquamax Eco Start pump, matched to the size of the filter
The Aquamax Eco 12000 and 16000 also feature “Seasonal Flow Control”,
which can save up to an additional 20%.
The SFC controls the pump flow rate and pressure depending on the
water temperature, so the flow rate can be automatically reduced during
the Winter period when lower flow rates are ideal. This feature can be
switched off, for a uniform pump performance.
All Aquamax Eco pumps have a secondary inlet, allowing the pump
to draw through it’s main strainer casing as well as from a Skimmer,
or a satellite strainer (optional accessories). Aquamax Eco pumps can
handle solid particles of up to 10mm diameter, giving exceptionally low
maintenance requirements. All models are supplied with two stepped
hosetails for connecting 1” to 11/2” hoses. All models have a 2” outlet
thread and a 11/2” inlet thread. OASE offer a 5-year request guarantee, for
added peace of mind.

WATER CLEANING & CARE
Pond Clear Advantage
Powerclean Cordless Pond Cleaner
HOW DO THEY WORK?
At the heart of each unit is an ultraviolet lamp housed within a quartz
sleeve. As water is constantly pumped from the pond through the unit,
the UV emitted from the lamp destroys the single-celled algae which
causes the pond water to turn green. With constant use the pond water
will remain crystal clear.
WHICH SIZE WILL YOUR POND REQUIRE?
The main factors which govern the model you will need are pond size,
stocking level and the amount of sunlight the pond is subject to. Use the
tables below to select the correct model for your pond.
• Four-stage hosetails designed to take flexible hose from 1/2” to 1 1/4”.
• Rigid pipe adaptors, for connection to 40mm solvent weld rigid pipe, are included with the unit.
• Easy access to working parts making maintenance quick and easy.
• Supplied with a 5 metre power cable.
• Complete with comprehensive instructions and backed up with full technical support from TMC.
• Full 36 month guarantee against any defect or failure. This covers all parts and labour.

Pond Clear Advantage UV8
Laguna are proud to introduce a revolution in powered pond cleaning;
the Laguna Powerclean.
ENVIRONMENTALLY SAFE
Using ultraviolet light, Pro Clear Advantage units destroy the green,
single-celled water borne algae which make garden ponds murky and
unattractive. As no chemicals are used, there is no danger of pollution
or over treatment of the water and sensitive plant and pond life is not
affected.
At the heart of each Pro Clear Advantage unit is an ultraviolet lamp
sealed inside a quartz sleeve. As water is pumped through the
unit, ultraviolet light from the lamp destroys the algae, leaving the
water clear.
SAFE AND EASY TO USE
A lightweight design, one finger lockable trigger
mechanism and load bearing shoulder strap
(included) makes the Powerclean easy for
anyone to use, from teens to OAP’s!
The chopping blades are safely
hidden behind protective bars
and the low voltage system
ensures it is completely
safe for use in aquatic
environments. The Laguna Powerclean Cordless
Pond Cleaner will be available during

FISH
History
The Goldfish started life as a
food fish for China and Japan
over 1000 years ago.
FISH
In the winter when the pond
freezes you should purchase
a pond heater to melt the ice
and to let the toxic gas out of
the water and oxygen in.
COMETS
It soon developed as an
ornamental pet as breeders
crossed the colours and
varieties to achieve many
different breeds; it is now
the most commonly kept pet
across the whole world with
over 100 different varieties.
Compatibility
When planning your pond you should take into consideration what types
of fish you would like to keep. There are three different types of pond.
Firstly a natural pond with lots of plants and a few fish such as Stickleback,
Rudd or Tench. Secondly a pond with mixed fish such as Goldfish,
Shubunkins, Sarasas or Tench. Also if your pond is large enough and 1m
deep, Orfe and Carp. Thirdly a large pond with a depth of 3ft and lots of
filtration will make an ideal Koi pond.
During the warmer months
always leave your pumps
and filter on 24 hours a day
for two reasons. First the
bacteria in the filter needs
oxygen 24 hours a day or
it will lead to poor water
quality and more importantly
the fish need oxygen 24
hours a day. The algae in the
pond releases oxygen during the day and not at night and this can lead to
an unhealthy pond environment. A waterfall can be a nice addition to a
pond and also adds vital oxygen to the water. Never wash your filter media
out under the tap as the chlorine will kill the bacteria in the filter media.
Goldfish
An ideal starter fish for any pond and will live in a mixed pond very well.
Breeds quickly and grows to 30cm.
ShuBUNKINS
Perfect fish to add colour to a mixed pond also breeds well and reaches up to 30cm maximum.
Introducing Fish
When introducing fish into your pond you should always test the water for
pH, Ammonia, and Nitrate. You should always test the saturation levels
whether you have fish in your pond or you are introducing new fish from
your retailer as they will be kept in good quality water. If all the water
parameters are OK introduce a few fish each week to your pond until it is
fully stocked, this will allow the bacteria in your filter to build up slowly as
you introduce fish into the pond. Always remember; for an unfiltered pond
introduce a maximum 1 inch of fish per 10 gallons of water. If you have a
good filter and U.V. introduce 1 inch max of fish per 5 gallons.
Useful Tips
Remember if you buy 10 fish at 1 inch, a year later if they double in size to
2 inches you will have 20 inches of fish. This is a common mistake people
make and can lead to over-stocking and water quality problems. Fish can
also breed which can add to further over-stocking problems.

GOLDEN/BLUE ORFE
GOLDEN RUDD
GREEN/GOLD TENCH
Hillside Fisheries
This is an operation set up by Maidenhead Aquatics, to ensure the Koi we
sell to our customers are of the best quality and health. Our Koi are held
in a state of the art facility for three months prior to sale and fed on a high
quality diet. They are the distributed to our stores when they are 100% fit
for sale. As a result our stores will always have new fish weekly to provide
the widest choice.
GOLDFISH
SARASAS
Always add
fish in small
numbers over a period
of time, so you don’t
overload the filter
system
Sarasas
Golden/Blue Orfe
Similar in colour to a goldfish but with a greater degree of whiteness, perfect for a mixed pond. Again can reach 30cm.
The orfe family are a shoaling fish and you should always buy 6 or more.
They need lots of oxygen in a filtered pond and they can reach a size of
60cm but a large pond is necessary for this. Good surface feeders.
Golden Rudd
A shoaling fish so buy in 6 or more, they breed quite well and their numbers
will soon build up in the pond. Maximum size 15cm, again a good fish for a
mixed pond.
KOI
Green/Gold Tench
The Tench is an ideal bottom feeder for any pond and are also quite shy. In
the wild they will grow quite large in size, but in a pond at home only up to
a size of 30cm. A good sinking
food is recommended for this
type of fish.
SHUBUNKINS
Koi
Are probably the most preferred
fish amongst our customers.
They are gracious & beautiful
fish and on average grow to
between 30-40cm but can grow
up to 90cm. A large pond is
required with a 3ft minimum
depth and lots of filtration. Will
mix with others but ideally best
suited with just Koi.

POND PLANTS
POND PLANTS
A Guide to Planting
Take care to plant your aquatic plants in the correct part
of your pond. Water lilies grow in deeper water and send
up leaves that float on the surface. Marginal plants grow
in the shallow water around the sides of the pond, and
bog plants like moist conditions at the pond edge. Each
plant has the ‘planting depth’ (depth of water above pot)
stated on the back of the pot label; as a quick reference
the Zone diagram below shows the various water depths
in zones and each plant pictured in this book has its
growing zone stated on the label.

Oxygenating plants
To breathe life into your pond - Zone 4
Oxygenating plants grow up from the bottom of the pond,
their leaves giving off bubbles of oxygen helping the
ecology of the pond; bunches can be thrown in to root
in natural ponds but should be planted in containers in
ponds without soil in the bottom.
Marginal Pond Plants
To bring your pond to life - Zones 2 & 3
Marginal plants provide life and colour around the pond
margins; low growing, rafting types have pretty flowers
and fine roots ideal to hide baby fish and tadpoles; tall
plants like irises should be planted at the far side of the
pond where they will form striking clumps and be used by
emerging dragonflies and other wildlife.
1. Cut off leading shoot with good growth on the tip.
2. Plant aquatic soil in a mesh container with fertiliser.
Keep growing tip above soil.

as well as cloudy water.
MY FISH ARE UNWELL
Products designed to quickly and easily treat all the common fish
ailments in a pond environment. Unique formulations that eradicate
disease whilst protecting your fish.
STARTING A NEW POND
FRESH START
Tap water contains chemicals (Chlorine, heavy metals)
that are harmful to fish and water borne wildlife.
Fresh Start instantly makes tap water safe for fish. Fresh
Start should be used when ponds are first filled up and
whenever a pond is topped up with tap water.
BIO START
New ponds are bare, water filled, holes
in the ground which nature slowly
turns into a living ecosystem with good
bacteria at the heart of keeping the
pond healthy. Bio Start supplies the
family of good bacteria to the pond
reducing by half the time it takes for the
ecosystem to establish
NEW POND CARE KIT
Combines all the product of Fresh Start,
Bio Start and the Test kit into one easy to
use pond start up pack.
POND HEALTH TEST KIT
Common pond problems are invisible and often
caused by not enough good bacteria leading
to too much toxic waste in the water or the
pond water being too Acid or Alkaline (pH).
This simple test kit economically tests for each
of these problems and the enclosed leaflet
recommends easy solutions to keep your pond
healthy. Being a tablet test it is the easiest form
of accurately testing pond water.
AMMONIA REMOVER
Ammonia is a waste product produced by fish – it is
invisible and can only be detected by test kits. Use
Ammonia Remover to protect livestock when test
kits show the presence of deadly toxic ammonia.
Acts instantly to detoxify the Ammonia.

GREEN AWAY
Single celled algae will rapidly turn any new
pond ‘Pea Soup’ green. Green Away’s natural
based formula sticks these cells together,
so they either sink or are trapped in a filter,
quickly leaving a clear pond.
If your fish look unwell you should always test your pond water for
Ammonia, Nitrite, Nitrate & pH, using a Blagdon Pond Health test kit.
MY FISH ARE UNWELL
BLANKETWEED BUSTER
The special blend of good bacteria in Blanketweed
Buster out compete the algae for nutrients in the pond
– leaving a clear clean pond. This product has the added
bonus of removing pond sludge as well.
CLEAR POND
Ponds can often be cloudy – after maintenance, after
heavy rain or after a UV has been fitted. This cloudy
water spoils the appearance of the pond. Clear pond
is a natural based flocculent that clumps all these fine
particles together allowing them to either sink to the
bottom of the pond or be pumped into a filter. The rapid
action of Clear Pond leaves your pond with sparkling
clear water.
EXTRACT OF BARLEY STRAW
Barley straw has been used for algae treatment for
decades, its decomposition produces a by-product
that breaks down under sunlight killing algae. This
extract is the by-product for the decomposition
process and delivers the natural algae control of
Barley straw without the draw backs.
DUCKWEED BUSTER
Duckweed is an unsightly floating plant that cuts out
light and kills all submerged plant life. Heavy growth can
be dangerous as it disguises the water. Duckweed Buster
prevents the duckweed from taking up the nutrients it
needs to grow, causing it to die back. Remove as much
as possible manually first to aid treatment and prevent
rotting Duckweed in the pond.
6/7
5
POND BALANCE
The best selling blanketweed treatment of the last
decade – very effective – changes the mineral salts in
the water making it impossible for blanketweed to repair
itself or grow – very easy to use – simply spoon the pink
salt into a bucket of water and stir in. Long lasting –
regular monthly repeat doses during the growing
season ensure your blanketweed never returns.
SLUDGE BUSTER
Throughout the year ponds accumulate debris, dead
plant matter, uneaten food, fish waste and if left
untouched this forms an unsightly unhealthy layer
of sludge at the bottom of the pond. Sludge Buster’s
unique blend of bacteria and enzymes break down
this sludge leaving your pond with a clean bottom!
The bacteria are species that use oxygen locked up
in the sludge for their respiration, preventing a lack
of oxygen in the water for the pond fish and other
water borne wildlife. A liquid alternative product is
available in the Sludge Control product.
When any problem with these is resolved – then you should look to the

FEEDING YOUR FISH
FEEDING YOUR FISH
SPECIAL FOODS
Foods that are specially formulated will provide a superior diet for
certain types of fish. For example, if the majority of the fish you keep are
goldfish, shubunkins or comets, then TetraPond Gold Mix will keep them
in top health and condition.
Food Quality for Healthier Ponds
HOW MUCH TO FEED
KOI FOODS
Foods developed specifically for koi,
with the correct balance of nutrients
and additional colour-enhancing
ingredients to promote their natural
colours. Specialist koi foods, such as
TetraPond Koi Excellence, are designed
to maintain the health, condition and
appearance of top quality koi.
To achieve a healthy, trouble-free pond it is essential to feed a good
quality food. Here are some top reasons why investing in a quality diet
really does pay for itself in the long-run:
HEALTHIER FISH
A diet with the correct quality and balance of nutrients will keep your
fish healthier and more colourful, and reduce the chances of them
getting sick.
CLEARER WATER
Good quality foods are easier to digest, leading to less solid waste
production and thus clearer water.
LESS ALGAE
Fish fed on good quality foods release less phosphate and nitrogen into
the water. These are key algae nutrients, so feeding a good quality food
helps to reduce problems with green water and blanketweed.
HEALTHIER WATER
A correctly balanced food is used more efficiently by the fish, resulting
in less waste production. This reduces water pollution, and keeps the
environment healthier for fish, plants and wildlife.
LESS MAINTENANCE
In producing less waste, good quality foods also help to reduce the
amount of maintenance you need to do. Pumps and filters clog less
frequently, and the base of the pond will not accumulate silt so rapidly.
If you have different types of fish it may be necessary to feed more
than one food. If you need it, more advice is available in-store
or from the Tetra Information Centre (www.tetra-fish.co.uk).
Choosing the right foods
To get the best from your fish and your pond, it is important to know
what to feed and when. Here is a quick guide to the most common types
of food:
STAPLE FOODS
Formulated as a general diet for feeding to the majority of pond fish,
good quality staple foods, such as TetraPond Sticks, make an ideal
daily diet.
VARIETY FOODS
Mixed foods, such as TetraPond Variety Sticks, offer fish a more varied
daily diet. They are ideal for ponds containing lots of different types of
fish, and can be fed in place of a staple food. TetraPond MultiMix is
another variety food, containing a mix of sticks, flake, river shrimp and
tablets. It is ideal for ponds with different sizes and types of fish.
The amount of food your fish need
depends on the temperature of the
water, hence why they are more active
in the summer. To ensure you adjust
to their changing requirements, you
should observe your fish feeding.
Offer only as much as they can
consume within a few minutes. This
should be done 2-3 times a day during
the spring and summer, and 1-2 times
a day during the autumn and winter.
COLOUR-ENHANCING FOODS
Foods containing additional colourenhancing ingredients are very useful
for feeding over short periods
to develop the natural colours of
your fish. For example, TetraPond
Colour Sticks can be fed at the start
of spring, to strengthen colours after
the winter.
TETRAPOND FOODS
COLD WEATHER FOODS
During the colder months pond fish
benefit from being fed a diet rich in
highly digestible wheatgerm. Foods such as TetraPond Wheatgerm
Sticks keep fish in top condition through the winter, ensuring they are
healthier and stronger for the spring. These diets should be fed once the
temperature is below 10˚C, as and when fish are active.
TetraPond is the UK’s best selling
brand of pond food, offering high
quality products for all of your fishes’
feeding requirements. Each food in
the range has been rigorously tested
at their independently accredited
research and development facilities,
the largest of their kind in the world,
and manufactured using the most
advanced techniques available. This
guarantees you unrivalled quality, healthy fish, and clean, clear water.

SEASONAL POND & WATER FEATURE CARE
TetraPond Treatments
Since ponds are located outside, the activity of its inhabitants are
directly related to the temperature of the pond at that specific time
(i.e. during the warmer summer months the pond is a lot more ‘active’
than the cooler winter months). For this reason any maintenance of a
pond will vary according to the season. It is then best to split this into the
4 seasons of the year as follows:
Relax and let Tetra take
care of your pond
A pond is the ideal place to relax and unwind after
a busy day, as well as being a great focal point to
the garden.
To help you get the most from yours, our new
treatments range does the hard work for you,
keeping your pond looking its best, and providing
fast, simple solutions to any problems you might
have. From creating the right environment for the
fish, plants, and wildlife, through to fast, effective
algae remedies, you can rely on Tetra to keep your
pond in top condition. Backed by the industry’s
largest research and testing facility, state-of-the-art
production, and rigorous quality control, Tetra’s
treatments range provides everything you need for a
healthy, beautiful pond.
SPRING:
• The busiest time of the year for any water gardener!
• Start to feed any fish more regularly and change their diet to a readily
digested type (e.g. growth food and normal sticks, flakes & pellets).
To monitor this, the use of a pond thermometer is recomended

SEASONAL POND & WATER FEATURE CARE
AUTUMN
• If you require to ‘clean out’ your pond completely, now is the time –
speak to a member of staff to get the right advice for your pond!
•Reduce the quantity of food fed to your fish as winter approaches.
Change their feed to a more suited diet that is digested more easily at
these lower temperatures (e.g. Maidenhead Aquatics Winter food or
Tetra Wheatgerm sticks). Using a pond thermometer will help you
make sure when you should be feeding your fish and how often
•Watch out for signs of your fish and pond wildlife (especially
amphibians) starting to breed – speak to a member of staff to find
out the best way to raise any fry (baby fish) that may be produced.
SUMMER:
• Finally treat your pond before the water temperature falls below 12ºC
with a broad range parasite treatment (e.g. Interpet Anti Parasite) as
any fish harbouring parasites over the winter will be untreatable due
to the lower water temperatures
• Using test kits check water quality on a regular basis
• Feed fish up to 3 times per day according to your ponds condition and
water temperature. A feeding ring can help condition your fish to
become more tame and prevents food from drifting around the pond,
thus preventing overfeeding and water quality issues
•Check fish health regularly and treat for symptoms as soon as
you see any
• This is the best time of the year to add fish into your pond. Please ask
a member of staff on the best way to introduce new fish into
your pond
• Remove any weeds from marginal pond plants and regularly prune
them to keep them in the best of health – watch out for any pests or
diseases on the plants! Keep oxygenating plants well managed and
fresh. Feed them more during the fast growing spells (e.g. with a slow
release pellet fertiliser)
• This is the best time to add water lilies and floating plants such
as ‘Water Lettuce’ and ‘Water Hyacinth’ to your pond or feature
(do not place them in an area where water splashes onto their
leaves however)
SEASONAL POND & WATER FEATURE CARE
•Add an air pump to your pond if it gets particularly hot to aid
circulation – keep all pumps on 24 hours a day!
• Remove algae as it grows – adding algaecides to your pond or water
feature if required (e.g. use Interpet Barley Straw Extract, Pond
Balance and Hagen Phos-X to help suppress blanketweed growth).
Electronic and magnetic devices are also available to help control the
growth and spread of blanketweek – speak to a member of staff
• Cut back all submerged pond plants so that they do not die during the
cold winter months and pollute your pond. Using Oase Pond Pliers and
Pond Shears will make this job much easier
•Cut back all marginal plants and remove all rotting material from
the water
the ice as the shock waves caused by this could kill your fish! Do not
pour hot water on the ice either, as this could cause temperature issues
and is only a temporary solution
• Remove any floating plants from the pond or feature and protect them
in frost free conditions
•Ideally raise the pump to the shallowest depth, as close to the filter
outlet as possible, to ensure minimum water circulation and heat loss
•If you wish to turn off any form of filtration then drain it out
completely and remove from the garden to prevent it from getting
damaged by freezing with any water inside it
• Regularly clean and replace any pond pump pre-filter foams
• Clean any pond filter foams, ideally one at a time rather than all in one
clean, in old pond water only! Top up the pond or feature with fresh
de-chlorinated water
• If you are going to install a pond or water feature, then this is probably
the best time of the year in which to do so, so that it will be all up &
running to be ready for the approaching summer ahead! Many books
are available to help you decide and advise exactly what you will
require for your new venture. Please ask a member of staff for any
advice concerning this
• Watch out for new and existing predators to your pond such as a heron,
and fit a suitable cover or deterrent to your pond
•Most importantly, always remember to install safe electrics in your
garden (e.g. use a suitably qualified electrician or buy a pre-wired
Armadillo Power System) and always use a circuit breaker (RCD) with
any power supply.
•Cover your pond, if not already covered, to catch the autumn and
winter debris from the garden
•This is a good time to install pond and garden lighting to extend the
hours you have to enjoy your pond or feature as the days get shorter.
WINTER:
Follow the above rules and advice and you can
enjoy all-year-round success with your pond or water
feature for year after year!
If you have any queries with any of the points above
or any other matters, then please speak to a member
of staff either in-store or over the phone!
• Only feed your fish, if suitable, using a winter food!
•Use a pond heater or similar product to prevent ice from forming
completely over your pond – this allows gases to exchange (i.e. toxic
gases, such as carbon dioxide out and fresh, such as oxygen in) and
keep the inhabitants from suffocating. Never use an object to smash

TEST KITS
POND TREATMENT
How often do I test?
Once a week during the pond season should be sufficient to
monitor that the pond environment is healthy.
What do you test for?
A clear pond is not necessarily a healthy pond
Pond owners often think provided pond water is nice and clear it must be healthy.
Unfortunately this is not true; many of the water chemistry factors which effect
plant and fish health are invisible to the human eye.
pH - This is how acid or alkaline the pond water is. pH is
measured on a scale from 1-14. A healthy pond needs to
have a stable pH of 6.5 – 8.5. Pond water pH depends on
the water source and there are a number of natural
processes, which can change it quite significantly.
How then can you tell if pond water is healthy?
Fortunately science supplies an answer and there are now very easy to use test kits
that quickly and accurately reveal the true condition of the water and allow the pond
keeper to manage the pond environment.
How do test kits work?
Fortunately pond owners do not need to be qualified scientists to test their
pond water. The simplest test kits like the Pond Check plus (see below) come in
a tablet form.
To test the water you simply:
1. Collect a sample in a test tube
2. Add one or two tablets, crush and shake them into solution and wait a few minutes for the colour to form.
3. Match the sample colour on a comparitor chart, which gives you a result.
4. Follow the advice in the leaflet supplied
Any problems can be quickly resolved by adding Interpet
Pond pH adjusters
Fish waste - Fish live in their own toilet, all the waste they
excrete remains in the pond and can build up to a level
which effects their health. In natural lakes there are fewer
fish in a larger volume of water which ensures waste levels
do not get too high and naturally occurring bacteria
remove the waste. In a garden pond a pond filter is necessary to act as a “mini sewage treatment plant” where large
concentrations of bacteria process the waste.
The most important waste excreted by fish is Ammonia
and this is the most toxic form. The bacteria in filters break
this down into less toxic Nitrite and then finally Nitrate.
Ammonia and Nitrite should be monitored to make sure
the filter is keeping these under control.
Ammonia problems can be resolved immediately with
Interpet Ammonia remover whilst the filter bacteria population is boosted by adding Interpet Bio Start
Nitrate – this is relatively non-toxic but it does cause algae
problems so levels should be monitored. Water changes
and strong plant growth can help control levels
whilst Greenaway and Pond Balance resolve the
algae problems.
GREENAWAY &
POND BALANCE
POND HEALTH KIT
Every pond has dissolved waste produced by the fish – this simple easy to use
test kit allows you to quickly see if all is well in the pond. This should be used
whenever the fish look unwell and be referred to for the remedial action
required. Comes complete with tests for Ammonia, Nitrite, Nitrate and pH as
well as a comprehensive easy to follow instruction booklet.
