Pond Slider
(Trachemys scripta)
Red-eared sliders and yellow-bellied sliders are
semi-aquatic turtles. The “slider” part of their name
comes from their ability to slide off rocks and logs
into the water quickly. They are native to the southern
part of the United States, but can be found in every
state due to their popularity in the pet industry.
Pond sliders are omnivores. Their diet consists of
fish, crayfish, carrion, tadpoles, snails, aquatic and
terrestrial insects and aquatic plants. Pond sliders
Red-eared slider
can be found in
ponds and lakes throughout Arizona. They
are considered a threat to Arizona’s aquatic
species because they prey on native fish
and compete with native turtles.
