Mon 9-May-2011 Jesus Lubian Rios A universal function to compare fusion cross sections of different systems Abstract The effect of breakup of weakly bound nuclei, especially halo nuclei, on the fusion cross section has been widely investigated [1] but not yet fully understood. One can distinguish effects of two kinds. First, there are the static effects associated with the longer tail of the nuclear density, arising from the halo nucleons. This tail gives rise to a more diffuse potential, with a lower barrier. This effect enhances the fusion cross section at sub-barrier energies. The second kind are the dynamical effects associated with the strong coupling between the elastic and the breakup channels. The consequences of this coupling are more difficult to assess. In order to investigate the role of weak binding in the fusion process, it is important to compare fusion cross sections for different systems and to have a benchmark to which the data have to be compared. Recently we have developed a new method [2] to investigate systematical trends in the fusion of weakly bound nuclei, through dimensionless fusion functions and energy variable quantity, and we were able to disentangle static from dynamic effects of the breakup on fusion. Abstract Recently it has been shown that the standard ways of determining polarization potentials are not useful to describe the breakup cross section in terms of a one-step process. Because the continuum couplings are strongly non-local the complexity of coupled channel methods may well be unavoidable [1]. In the present work the effect of the breakup process on the fusion induced by proton halo projectiles is investigated through the behavior of the quasi elastic barrier distribution (QEBD) of the system 8B + 58Ni. The competition between the breakup channel and inelastic excitations and the behavior of their corresponding polarization potentials are studied by means of CDCC calculations. We performed several calculations including couplings with channels associated with 8B breakup and 58 Ni collective states. Switching on and of the couplings with each kind of channel, we determined their separate influence on the QEBD. While the breakup coupling shifts the barrier distribution to higher energies, reduces slightly its maximum and makes the distribution broader, the coupling to inelastic channels shifts the distribution to lower energies and leads to a second maximum at higher energies. When both couplings are considered, the shifts toward opposite directions cancel and the barrier remains close to its nominal value. This fact is interpreted as: the repulsive polarization potential associated with breakup cancels the attractive one resulting from the coupling with the target collective states [2]. These results are compared with the same calculations for the 6Li + 144Sm system, for which there is experimental data [3]. We have used the CDCC method to investigate the effects of breakup coupling on 8B + 58Ni and elastic scattering. The results of our calculations were in excellent agreement with the experimental results. The effect of inelastic excitations and of continuum-continuum couplings on the angular distributions has been also investigated. We found that inelastic excitations do not have a strong influence while continuum-continuum couplings are of utmost importance. The relative importance of Coulomb and nuclear breakups and their interference were also investigated. For this purpose, we perform CDCC calculations switching of each of these interactions, and comparing the results with the ones obtained with the full couplings. The repulsive character of the polarization potential associated with Coulomb breakup was found in the barrier region. On the other hand, the results for purely nuclear breakup coupling fall slightly below the results of the single-channel calculation. When both nuclear and Coulomb breakup couplings are taken into account, there is a destructive interference between the two amplitudes and the angular distribution lies slightly above the no-coupling results. Abstract The K500 superconducting cyclotron (SCC) at the Variable Energy Cyclotron Centre (VECC), Kolkata, has accelerated Neon ion test beam up to the extraction radius and is expected to deliver soon a large variety of particle ion beams over a wide range of energies (upto ~ 80 MeV protons, ~10-80 MeV/nucleon medium heavy ions with mass A< 60 and ~ 5-20 MeV/nucleon for heaviest ions) and open up a new frontier in intermediate energy nuclear physics research in India. The prediction for 14N(p,g)15O is S(0)=1.676 keV b and S(30)=1.666 keV b. Good agreement with available cross section supports this result. Mon 21-May-2012 Janina Grineviciute Relativistic Microscopic R Matrix and Its Applications 406 Abstract The R-matrix formalism of Lane and Thomas1 has been extended to the relativistic case so that the many-coupled channels problem may be solved for systems in which binary breakup channels satisfy a relative Dirac equation. The formalism was applied to the relativistic impulse approximation2 (RIA) and also to Quantum Hadrodynamics3 (QHD) in the continuum Tamm-Dancoff approximation (TDA) with the classical meson fields replaced by one-meson exchange potentials using Dirac oscillator basis functions4. It was shown5 that the common local density approximation for the exchange terms was inadequate in relativistic calculations. The discrepancy between the exact and the local density approximation calculations was traced to the extreme difference between the matrix elements of the negative energy states of the basis functions and hence a relativistic effect. Application of the formalism to the relativistic continuum TDA calculations for 16O showed 6 that even the simple exchange with QHD coupling constants provides reasonable agreement with experimentally determined single particle energies and 15N(p,p) cross section at 39.84 MeV and hence is a justifiable interaction for later use in knockout reactions. 1. Yarmukhamedov Methods of determination of asymptotic normalization coefficients for A+a→B and their astrophysical application Abstract In the report, the basic methods of the determination of the fundamental nuclear characteristic of nuclei in the form of asymptotic normalization coefficient (ANC) (or respective nuclear vertex constant (NVC)) for the nuclear B in the binary (A+a)-channel, denoted by A+a→B, and its nuclear astrophysical application are discussed. The problem of the applicability of the traditional “post”-approximation and “post”-(or “prior”-) form of the DWBA approach for determination of the ANC-values being astrophysical interest is discussed in detail. For the concrete peripheral transfer reactions being astrophysical interest, the results of calculation of the factor determining the influence of the three-body Coulomb effects both on the DWBA cross section calculations and on the ANC-values are presented. As an alternative method of finding the ANCs (NVCs)-values, the new modified two-body potential method for the direct radiative capture A(a,g)B, where the astrophysical S factor is also expressed in terms of the ANC for A+a→B, is given. The results of the ANCs deduced within this method and the DWBA calculations as well as their application for extrapolation of the corresponding astrophysical S factors for the concrete direct radiative capture reactions at experimentally inaccessible energy region (solar energies), are presented. Besides, carrying out of the desirable experiments for measurements of the cross sections for the concrete peripheral transfer transfer reactions, including the Trojan-Horses experiments, and the nuclear astrophysical radiative capture reactions on the facilities of the existing accelerators of DC-60(Astana,Kazakhstan) , UKP-2(Almaty, Kazakhstan) and “Sokol”(Tashkent, Uzbekistan) is also discussed. Yarmukhmedov On the connection between the nuclear vertex constant (the asymptotic normalization coefficient) for the virtual decay B --> a + A and the effective-range expansion parameters Abstract In this report, the explicit expression for the NVC (or ANC) for the virtual decay B -A + a an arbitrary orbital momentum l and the corresponding connection equation for the bound (A+alfa) state, which are valid both for the neutral case and for the charged case, are discussed for the standard effective-range expansion Kl(k2) restricting by terms up to k6. Combining this expression and the bound state condition with the standard effective-range function makes it possible one to reduce the number of the free effective range parameters on two if the "experimental" ANC-value is known. The new experimental values for the scattering length, effective range and parameter form are determined in this way for the 16O+p, alfa+t and alfa+3He collisions by using the available corresponding "experimental" ANC. It is shown that the effective-range expansion for these collisions is valid up to energies larger 5 MeV 407 Mon 16-Jul-2012 G. Turchetti Trasporto e post-accelerazione di protoni generati da un laser Abstract: Si considerano diversi regimi di accelerazione per impulsi laser di alta intensità I=1~2 1021 W/cm2 come quelli che saranno raggiunti a Frascati nella fase II dell’esperimento LILIA. Da simulazioni PIC 3D, condotte con i codici AlaDyn e JASMINE sviluppati a Bologna, risulta che con fogli sottili di spessore superiore a 0.5 mm la energia massima raggiungibile nel regime TNSA non supera i 30 MeV. Si possono ottenere energie prossime ai 60 MeV con fogli di spessore ottimale, che si raggiunge in prossimità della trasparenza indotta, oppure con fogli di spessore tra 0.5 e 1 mm aventi uno strato di pochi mm di un materiale con densità quasi critica che migliora l’accoppiamento laser bersaglio ed il trasferimento di energia. Energie ed intensità lievemente superiori sono ottenibili con bersagli di densità quasi critica e di spessore 2 o 3 volte la lunghezza dell’impulso ossia 50~100 mm. In questo caso il laser scava un canale nel mezzo e gli elettroni in uscita creano un vortice magnetico oltre che un campo elettrostatico che accelera i protoni (regime MVA). In ciascun caso lo spettro è esponenziale con cutoff Emax e l’energia è tipicamente E0~Emax/8. Ne risulta che un numero apprezzabile di protoni E>108 si ha per un’energia circa metà di quella massima con una dispersione del 2~3%. Per tale ragione si è proposta una linea di trasposto che focalizza il fascio e lo seleziona in energia tramite un solenoide ed un collimatore posto nel fuoco per i protoni da 30 MeV. Le dimensioni ed emittanza del fascio selezionato consentono l’iniezione in un linac compatto ad alta frequenza come ACLIP e le simulazioni mostrano che oltre 107 sono accelerati nel primo modulo e senza altre perdite nei 4 moduli successivi portando la energia finale a 60 MeV. Alla frequenza di 10 Hz le dosi ottenibili in un paio di minuti sarebbero adeguate per irradiare piccoli tumori superficiali. Le simulazioni qui descritte permettono di delineare gli esperimenti della fase II di LILIA e di sviluppare lo studio di fattibilità per un laboratorio multidisciplinare PROMETHEUS dedicato alla ricerca biomedica ed alla fisica dei materiali Tue 4-Sep-2012 R. In the pf-shell nuclei, they are of importance in the core-collapse stage of supernovae and the rp-process. We report the study of GT transitions from the Tz=+3/2, 47Ti nucleus to the states in Tz=+1/2, 47V nucleus by the (3He,t) reaction. The experiment was carried out at the Research Center for Nuclear Physics (RCNP), Osaka [1] using a 3He beam of 140 MeV/nucleon [2-5]. An excellent energy resolution of 20 keV was achieved by applying the dispersion matching techniques. We could study GT transitions to individual states up to 12.5 MeV in 47V. In order to determine the strength of each transition, it was assumed that the GT transition strength B(GT) is proportional to the measured differential cross-section at 0° in the (3He,t) reaction [6]. Since a “standard B (GT) value” is available from the study of 47V b decay, B(GT) values were reliably derived. The observed GT strength spreads widely up to 12.5 MeV and are highly fragmented. These features were very different from the “compact” GT strength distribution observed in the 41K(3He,t)41Ca reaction having the same Tz=+3/2à+1/2 nature [7]. The GT strength distribution in 47V was well reproduced by the shell-model calculations. The GT transitions from the ground state of 47Ti to the three low-lying states in 47V and the M1 transitions from the isobaric analog state in 47V to the same low-lying states in 47V are analogous.
