Steel Guardrail Post Repair
SALVAGE™ II RUST ENCAPSULATOR AND
MEGA-CRETE™ SLURRY CONCRETE REPAIR
APPLICATION STORY
• Sign and pedestrian guardrail
posts are set deeply into precast
“cup-holes” or post-cut concrete
holes and anchored with mortar. As
the mortar sets, the initial fill level
can drop below the adjacent concrete
creating a pool around the post for water to collect. Standing
water causes rust at the base and can weaken the structure.
• For one park, grinding away the old paint and re-priming
and painting worked for a short time, but the rust would
quickly return. S-type mortars used for filling cup-holes
didn’t last through winter freeze cycles.
• Using Salvage II rust encapsulator at the base of the
metal post created a layer of protection for years of rustfree service. Applying Mega-Crete Slurry concrete repair
compound strengthened the base and created a slope to
prevent standing water.
APPLICATION STEPS
Use a twist-knot wire brush or Z-Flex™ layered flap disk to
remove the rust.
Remove any loose concrete by the post.
Brush on a liberal amount of
Salvage II rust encapsulator, paying
special attention to the crack
between the concrete and post at
the entry point.
Once cured, apply a thick mixture
of Mega Crete Slurry concrete repair
in the cup-hole and around the post to create a dome-shaped
profile.
Apply rubbing alcohol to a clean putty knife to get a smooth finish
on the Mega Crete Slurry.
NOTE: Mega-Crete Slurry compound should be applied
immediately after Salvage II encapsulator sets. If applied
24 hours after, lightly sand the cured Salvage II surface until
it looks dull before applying Mega Crete Slurry to maximize
bond strength.
