Graduates
Hudson Valley Community College again
ranked as one of the largest and most productive
American two-year colleges, according to a
survey released this summer by Community
College Week, a bi-weekly higher education
newspaper.
The rankings, which are based on numbers
from the 2005–2006 academic year, show that
Hudson Valley had 1,559 associate’s degree
graduates during that academic year, ranking it
50th among all two-year colleges in the number
of associate’s degrees awarded.
The newspaper ranks the Top 100 two-year
and four-year colleges based on the number
of associate’s degrees and one- and two-year
certificates conferred. Hudson Valley is the fifth
largest community college among the 30 in the
State University of New York system.
In addition, Hudson Valley also ranked sixth
among all colleges in the number of Criminal
Justice associate’s degrees granted during the
2005–2006 year, according to the survey.
There are 2,851 public and private colleges
that offer associate’s degrees in the United States,
according to U.S. Department of Education’s
National Center for Education Statistics.
This year, the college graduated its first-ever
class of students specifically trained to work in
the emerging field of semiconductors and
nanotechnology.
Three students—two men and one woman—
earned associate’s degrees in Electrical
Technology: Semiconductor Manufacturing
Technology (SMT), one of 18 associate’s degree
and certificate programs offered through the
college’s School of Engineering and Industrial
Technologies.
Instituted two years ago in response to the
Capital Region’s growing Tech Valley initiative,
the Semiconductor program provides a
combination of classroom education and
hands-on instruction to train students for
employment as work station operators in
clean room environments or for transfer to
bachelor’s degree programs upon graduation.
Campus Continues
Transformation
The center of Hudson Valley’s Troy campus
underwent nothing short of a complete
transformation over the past year as the college’s
new Administration Building created one corner
of a new student quad. The new Dr. Frank J.
Morgan Jr. Clock Tower, named in honor of one
the college’s most beloved teachers and
administrators, occupies a second corner
Dr. Joseph J. Bulmer, who
served as president of the
college from 1979 to 1996,

of the new quad, its chimes ringing out on the
hour and half-hour.
Further campus improvements included
reclamation of a faculty parking lot into a new
pedestrian quad between Amstuz, Fitzgibbons
and the Marvin Library.
These changes have created a pedestrian
friendly center campus that enriches the campus
experience for student, faculty, staff and visitors.
Workforce Development
Institute Receives
Statewide Grant for
Energy Efficiency Training
The college’s Workforce Development
Institute has partnered with the New York State
Energy Research and Development Authority
(NYSERDA) to provide statewide energy
efficiency training for contractors and builders.
The training prepares participants for Building
Performance Institute (BPI) certification. BPI sets
the national technical standards for contractors in
the building performance contracting trade.
Contractors and home remodelers who complete
the program may receive designation as a Home
Performance with Energy Star® contractor, greatly
increasing their marketability and ultimately
helping to increase existing home energy
efficiency across New York.
Five Energy Smart Learning Centers have
been established around the state and will be
overseen by the college’s new Center for Energy
Efficiency and Building Science.
An additional five centers are scheduled to
open this year.
Cash and in-kind donations came from
corporations, faculty, staff, alumni and charitable

corporate gift, donating automotive equipment
and tools valued at $51,906 to benefit the
college’s automotive programs.
Albany Medical Center, DaimlerChrysler and
U.W. Marx Construction made other significant
corporate gifts. Albany Medical Center contributed

Joe Daley, Albert Hanley and Steve Frazee—
won the President’s Cup, which is presented
to the foursome with the lowest net score;
that foursome had a score of 55.
“The growing success of our golf tournament
is a testament to the fact that the college plays
an integral role in the Capital Region economy,”
said Foundation President Sarah M. Boggess,
who also serves as the college’s vice president
for institutional advancement. “Corporate

About the Hudson Valley
Community College Foundation
The mission of the Hudson Valley Community College
Foundation is to foster enduring relationships that build
advocacy and support of Hudson Valley Community
College. It does so, in large part, by securing private funds
to supplement the college’s traditional revenue sources.
Since 1983, the Hudson Valley Community College
Foundation has provided support for the college and its
students. Founded by a dedicated group of volunteers
who understood the need for affordable access to
educational opportunities, a proud tradition of commitment
and caring began and remains today at the core of the
Foundation’s mission.
A not-for-profit, independent 501(c)(3) corporation
founded in 1983, the Foundation is governed by a Board of
Directors who participate in and oversee the Foundation’s
philanthropic activities, which are designed to produce a
positive and beneficial impact upon the college, its students,
and the communities it serves.
While committed to raising funds for student
scholarships, the Foundation secures private resources to
provide support for faculty enrichment programs, new and
innovative academic initiatives, student development
activities, enhanced student support services, cultural
programs, equipment purchases, facility improvements,
and technology enhancements. The Foundation has
supported many initiatives through the generous support
and assistance of faculty, staff, alumni, friends, and
corporate partners in the community.
Economic uncertainty and increased demands on tax
dollars are diminishing public support for community
colleges. As a result, community colleges are turning to
private philanthropy as a necessary resource to ensure
continued excellence in teaching and learning. Faced with
dwindling public funding, the college faces the need to
diversify funding streams in order to prepare students to
meet the challenges of the future and become the leaders of
tomorrow.
Philanthropic support to Hudson Valley Community
College and its charitable foundation totaled $912,672
during the 2006–07 academic year.

About the Hudson Valley
Community College Foundation
The mission of the Hudson Valley Community College
Foundation is to foster enduring relationships that build
advocacy and support of Hudson Valley Community
College. It does so, in large part, by securing private funds
to supplement the college’s traditional revenue sources.
Since 1983, the Hudson Valley Community College
Foundation has provided support for the college and its
students. Founded by a dedicated group of volunteers
who understood the need for affordable access to
educational opportunities, a proud tradition of commitment
and caring began and remains today at the core of the
Foundation’s mission.
A not-for-profit, independent 501(c)(3) corporation
founded in 1983, the Foundation is governed by a Board of
Directors who participate in and oversee the Foundation’s
philanthropic activities, which are designed to produce a
positive and beneficial impact upon the college, its students,
and the communities it serves.
While committed to raising funds for student
scholarships, the Foundation secures private resources to
provide support for faculty enrichment programs, new and
innovative academic initiatives, student development
activities, enhanced student support services, cultural
programs, equipment purchases, facility improvements,
and technology enhancements. The Foundation has
supported many initiatives through the generous support
and assistance of faculty, staff, alumni, friends, and
corporate partners in the community.
Economic uncertainty and increased demands on tax
dollars are diminishing public support for community
colleges. As a result, community colleges are turning to
private philanthropy as a necessary resource to ensure
continued excellence in teaching and learning. Faced with
dwindling public funding, the college faces the need to
diversify funding streams in order to prepare students to
meet the challenges of the future and become the leaders of
tomorrow.
Philanthropic support to Hudson Valley Community
College and its charitable foundation totaled $912,672
during the 2006–07 academic year.
