Lori Greene planned to get married in the fall
of 2010. She had plenty of time to pick out
locations with her mom, and was in no rush.
Then the unthinkable happened. Her mother,
Donna Howell, had fought breast cancer and
was even one of the main voices for victims
during the Cameron Inquiry into hormone
receptor testing. She was accustomed to fighting
cancer. However, in May 2009 Donna’s battle
with cancer, which had spread from her breasts
to her bones to her liver, became serious. Lori
realized that if she wanted her mother to be
at her wedding she was going to have to make
some quick changes.
“I talked to her doctor and asked if I was to get
married in September, would that be too late?”
The doctor felt it was. And so was August. “How
about June 19th?” Lori asked. The doctor told
her it might be too late, but she should go for it.
That gave Lori a month to plan her wedding.
Lori set about making it happen
with the belief that it would all
come together in time for her
mom to be a part of it.
The day they

received the news of the cancer’s progression,
Lori called her vendor and explained
the situation. “The lady at the venue was
wonderful,” Lori said. “As soon as I told her the
situation, she took care of it.”
The next day she went shopping for her
wedding dress with her mom and bridesmaids.
The girls found their dresses the same day, in
under an hour. The next day Lori put together
a wedding invitation-making assembly
line and by then it was clear that with
the help of friends and family, pulling
off a wedding in a month was more
than possible.
Lori and her fiancé Sheldon were
married at Holy Family Church in
Paradise on June 19, 2009 with her mother
there to watch her walk down the aisle.
Even though Lori was a nurse, she was on

We often hear stories of epic wedding woes
between brides, grooms and their respective
parents. It got us here at Devotion wondering
what kind of relationship our brides and grooms
right here in Newfoundland and Labrador have
with their partner’s families. We sent out a survey
to 50 people and the results are in. Turns out
for the most part, we love them. They’re more
helpful than not. And most importantly, they
don’t overstay their welcome. Of course, not
everyone has it perfect. But isn’t it good to know
the majority of in-law relationships are not nearly

Around Newfoundland and Labrador
it’s pretty uncommon to see people
wearing their wedding rings on any
finger other than the third finger on the
left hand. Many other cultures and regions of
the world have different wedding ring
traditions when it comes to ring placement,
but did you ever wonder what the
tradition is behind our custom?
The most common
reason for this tradition
comes from ancient Rome.
The Roman’s believed that a
vein stretched from the third
finger of the left hand to the heart.
This vein was called vena amoris, or vein of love.
The belief was that by placing the ring above the
vein, you were linked with the heart. Like many
traditions the real reasons are lost to time. However,
next time you look down at your ring, you can
think back to our ancient ancestors in Rome and
thank them for this little piece of romantic folklore.
Love on the High Seas

In last year’s Devotion we
introduced you to Catherine
Fleming and Justin Warren. They
were in the middle of planning
their cruise ship wedding. They
were married May 19th, 2011 at
Divi Little Beach in Phillipsburg,
St. Maarten. The entire wedding
was arranged by their wedding
coordinator on Royal Caribbean’s
Allure of the Seas. We wanted to
know how things turned out and
what advice Catherine Warren had
for those of you considering a cruise
ship wedding.
By all accounts, the wedding was
the stuff of dreams. 26 of their
closest family and friends joined
them, and while there was rain
while they were docking, the sun
came out in time for their beach
wedding and everything was fresh
and bright. Catherine says one thing
brides should keep in mind is that a
destination wedding doesn’t mean
you can’t have the dress you always
wanted. She chose a stunning Mori
Lee gown. She was driven from
the ship to the beach in a jaguar
and was made to feel like a local
celebrity. Catherine’s bouquet was
made of tropical flowers from the
island, and her only disappointment
was that she wasn’t
Submitted photos
allowed to take them with her when they returned to
the US.
Catherine stresses that while her wedding was
spectacular, you do need to do your research,
especially when it comes to getting your marriage
licence. One of her biggest stresses came in getting
her marriage licence. “Some destinations (like St.
Maarten) can take months to process a marriage
licence. Make sure you send it in plenty of time so
you aren’t under a time crunch!”, she warns. You
also want to find out what language the ceremony
will be conducted in. If the country has an official
language other than English, you may need to get
your documents translated. This can create an extra
cost that you might not be expecting.
Other bits of practical advice include not wearing
heels on your beach wedding. She wore wedge heels
and had no trouble walking up the sandy aisle. Also,
Catherine advises you carry your wedding gown as
your carry on baggage when flying to your cruise
ship departure port. This not only allows you to keep
an eye on your dress, but can let people know you’re
on your way to your wedding which may result in
extra perks and attention. And what new bride doesn’t
want that?
Finally, don’t sweat the small stuff. You don’t have
a lot of control over what things may change so
just go with it. In Catherine and Justin’s case, they’d
requested a harpist to play during the ceremony.
However, they ended up with Steel Drums. Instead
of being disappointed, they were thrilled with the
unexpected surprise.
If you’re the kind of person who needs to control
every detail of your wedding, a cruise ship wedding
may not be for you. But if you’re willing to place your
faith in professionals with experience, and go with the
flow, you can end up having a truly once-in-a-lifetime
experience.

between a bride and her groom
“Today I marry my best friend”.
Truer words have never been
spoken. August 20th, 2011 was a
dream. The whole day went by in
a blink of an eye. Every aspect of
our wedding was perfect, from
the engagement to the final dance
of the night. I wouldn’t change a
single thing.
You always hear about the girl
that married her high school
sweetheart...that was me! Steve
and I met many years ago, all the
way back in grade five! Who would
have thought then that a mere
five years later he would be by
boyfriend? We started seeing each
other in grade 10 and have been
together ever since. 17 years later,
and I still get butterflies when he
kisses me.
14
Steve’s proposal was perfect. It was
close to 11p.m. one evening and he
was scheduled to go away for work
in the early a.m. I was upstairs,
calling out for him to come to
bed. He was calling back, for me
to come downstairs. After about
20 minutes of this going back and
forth, I finally came down to see
what he was doing. All the lights
were off, except for a flicker of
light on the patio table that I could
see through the open back patio
door. As I went out to see where he
was, all I could see were numerous
candles laid everywhere. He
turned the corner holding a little
black box. He took my hand, got
down on one knee and said I was
his best friend, his one and only
and he wanted me to become his
wife. Of course, through tears and
kisses, I said yes.
Our wedding was a fairytale
come true. We were married at
Holy Family Church in front
of our friends and family. The
Party Bus was our chauffeur, and
took us to get our pictures taken.
Our photographer, Crystal Clear
Images, was amazing. She snapped
our pictures at Glendenning
Golf course (where our reception
was held), downtown St. John’s
and Signal Hill. The staff at
Glendenning Golf Course worked
their magic and did everything
they could to ensure our night was
spectacular.
One of our best memories was of
our bridal party. We are fortunate
enough to have amazing brothers
and sisters and the best friends you
could ever ask for. They were kind

enough to go along with
our wishes, of dancing into
the reception, in a practiced
choreographed ensemble and
adding a few dance moves
to Michael Jackson’s “beat
it” midway through our first
dance of the night. It
was perfect.
What advice could I offer
a couple planning their
wedding? This whole journey
will be over before you know
it. Enjoy it. Take a deep breath
that day. Look around when
you are up at the altar getting
ready to marry the love of
your life. Look at the people
that came to see you–all
your very best friends and
loved ones. Take another
deep breath and look at your
spouse-to-be. Remember how
he looks this very moment in
time. Although you feel like
it’s the busy, hectic, run-ragged
time of your life, enjoy it.
When it’s all said and done
and you’re home taking off
your wedding dress and trying
to pull 300 bobby pins from
your hair, you won’t believe
it’s all done. You would give
anything to start all over and
relive every minute of your
wedding again. As fast as a
picture is snapped, you will be
saying “I do” and you too will
be marrying your best friend.

Some women want their cake to be
a picture of elegance, while others
like to surprise their new husbands

a logo of his favourite sports team.
Whatever you choose, keep in mind
that your cake is a focal-point in
your wedding. So why not make it
exactly what you want?

Planning a wedding can be very
stressful and fun at the same
time. Making sure that you
have the right vendors booked
to make that dream wedding
come true takes a lot of help and
advice. Photography is a very big
part of your wedding and your
photographer should be chosen
with a lot of thought.
Four photographers have given
their opinions on different topics.
Here is what they had to say.
1. Why are contracts important?
Crystal: Contracts clarify what
services are offered and paid for.
Hilda: It’s very important to have
everything outlined so there are no
misunderstandings.
Adam: It will help both sides be clear
about deliverables and time lines. It
will ensure that every one is on the
same page regarding the wedding and
will cover questions that might
come up.
Charro: You should always have
a contract with your photographer.

Having a contract protects both parties
and ensures that requirements that
both the bride and groom and their
photographer have will be legally met.
2. Are locations important?
Crystal: I always ask what the couple
would like to see as a background.
For example, water, NL scenery,
architecture, greenery, etc. From
there we come up with a list of spots
together.
Hilda: I think the location should
have meaning and importance to the
couple. Not just shoot there because it
is “the place”. I like being able to find
something different for each couple.
Adam: While locations are important,
I think that lighting is the first priority.
If you have a beautiful location but
the lighting is not working then there
can be problems. Not to say the photos
would not be good, but it will be
much harder to get the “wow” factor
with bad light. I look for interesting
lighting. An environment in which the
light acts differently is awesome, be it
the way the light falls on the couple,
or something that creates a different
Charro Benteau

pattern. An unusual light source or a
natural light modifier can really make
a good photo an amazing one.
Charro: I really do not have a
particular favorite spot to shoot. I
always ask my bride and groom what
the vision is for their wedding day.
Where do they see themselves in
their pictures and most importantly,
is there a particular location that has
sentimental value to them? If they ask
for help in choosing locations then I
will suggest something based on their
interests and personality.
3. Do you find it better shooting
by yourself or with another
photographer?
Crystal: I like two because it gives
you the opportunity to get different
angles. But one photographer can
certainly cover a wedding just as well.
Hilda: I shoot alone but have an
assistant. I can see the upside of
having another photographer so you
can catch many different angles from
the day, but you have to be careful not
to overwhelm the couple.
Adam: I find it very handy to have
a second person who can help carry
gear, be a gofer back to the car, help
the bridal party and someone who is
able to watch the crowd for a candid
moment when you’re looking at
something else.
Charro: I try to make sure my
assistants are always able to second
shoot. It’s always nice to have the
option of different angles to choose
from during the day. During the
couple’s portion of the shoot, I may
choose to have my assistant not shoot
but instead help out with off-camera
flash. I can’t imagine shooting a
wedding without an assistant. They
bring so much to the day from
straightening ties and flowers to
fantastic candid photographs at times
when I do not have the ability to take
candid shots.
4. Do you require full payment up
front or on the wedding day?
Crystal: I have a deposit that is due on
booking. The rest is due on or before
the day of.
Hilda: I take a deposit to secure the
date and full payment is due a week
before the wedding.
Adam: Full payment due before the
wedding.
Charro: I require payment in full the
day before the wedding.
otherwise. Now obviously rain can be
a bit of a downer, but it’s not a disaster
by any accord. Many say that a cloudy
day is best, as it does not make people
squint, which is true. But you also
don’t get really cool sun flares and
other things, so there really is no best,
just different.
Charro: The weather here in
Newfoundland is unpredictable, so
knowing how to shoot in any condition
is a must! I prefer overcast for family
portraits and bright sun for the
couple’s portion of the day. Light rain
makes everything pop in color and is
definitely not the end of the world on a
wedding day. I think some of my best
work has been in the rain. The hardest
element to work with is heavy winds.
6. What is your time line to
return proofs?
We all agreed that you should expect
to receive your proofs between 4-6
weeks after the wedding.
Hilda: I don’t work with a list, but
I have a thorough conversation with
clients and take lots of notes to make
sure I get everything they would like.
Adam: I’m more than happy to do
whatever makes the bride the most
comfortable. Some people are very
list oriented while others are not.
During consultation we will discuss
the photos the couple would like to
ensure everyone is on the same page
for family photos and how the day will
progress.
Charro: I make my own list of shots
that are “must have” shots. It might
sound a bit old fashioned, but I’d
rather make sure I have that special
shot of the grandmother’s broach or
the cousin who came from overseas
then take the chance of missing it.
That being said, this list is my own
based on things the couple has asked
for. I don’t usually ask the bride and
groom to provide one.
Continued on page 26
7. Will you, or do you like having a
list of shots that the bride wants?
Crystal: I have an informal list of
shots that I take of the family. If there
is something the couple want added I
have no problem taking a list.
5. What is the best weather to take
photos in?
Crystal: Just after it rains is
spectacular because all the colors
appear richer. I also like soft sun that
is coming through the clouds. I find
harsh sunlight hard to shoot in but can
add interesting shadows to the photos.
Hilda: Overcast/ bright, not to sunny.
I love fall shooting because the light is
so soft .
Adam: This is an interesting question,
and I feel whatever the weather is
on your big day is the best weather.
You never know what shots you will
get and there will be that one stellar
photo that you would not have gotten

maternity leave at the time. She spent the
remainder of the summer caring for her mother.
On September 25th, 2009, Donna Howell passed
away with Lori at her side.
Unfortunately, Lori isn’t the only person who has
or will deal with cancer while planning a wedding.
Recent estimates expect a total of
2,700 new cases of cancer will occur in
Newfoundland and Labrador this year, 370
of those with breast cancer.
The emotional stress of coming to terms with the
situation, in addition to the normal stresses of
planning a wedding can seem overwhelming. But
Lori says that you do what you need to do. Her
advice? Take any help you are offered. If you have
people willing to help you, accept it. Your family
will pull together to make it happen.
“If you want your wedding to happen, it will. No
matter what,” Lori advises. She also advises trying
not to stress. “It doesn’t help. So what’s the point.
And there are bigger things happening than the
wedding.”

Curious about what decorating
trends are hot in Newfoundland
and Labrador in 2012? Here are
some things I predict we’ll see a
lot of this wedding season.
Vintage Victorian: The
wedding of the year for 2011 was
certainly Prince William and Kate’s.
For that reason, damask is still big
here in the province, although not so
much on the mainland. Lace remains
a craze and hot colours in this theme
are white, black, ivory, pale pink and
Victorian lilac.
Shabby Rustic:
Very
popular with outdoor weddings,
where people are keeping it simple
by renting tents and doing it
themselves.
Simplicity:
Clean and simple
seems to be the key to elegance
these days. Popular centerpieces are
cylinder and square vases with faux
crystal and water, along with floating
candles. More elaborate weddings
are tending towards large Manzanita
trees decorated with hanging crystals
and candle glasses.
What’s hot?
• Chiavari chairs
• Candy Buffets
• Cup cakes
• Photo booths
• LED uplighting in the corner of your venue and decor lighting
What’s not?
• Icicle lights
• Ivy
• Ceiling canopies
Beautiful
Brides and
their Gowns
of 2011

If you’re considering purchasing a
diamond, you’ve probably already
heard of the term ‘the 4C’s’. These
4C’s - cut, clarity, carat weight and
colour - are simply a grading system
established by the diamond industry to
help categorize and valuate diamonds.
While some may have always thought
that the size of the diamond matters
most, it’s actually the combination of
the 4C’s that determines the value of
a particular diamond. For example, a
colourless diamond is very rare, but if
it lacks clarity, is small, or not well cut,
it will be of a lower value.
Allow us to explain each
of the 4C’s and what they mean,
starting with the most important.
CUT: Cut refers to the
arrangement of a diamond’s
facets. Cut is the most important of
the four C’s and is the only C under
man’s control. Using an exacting
mathematical formula, master cutters
create each ideal cut diamond with
astounding precision. Unparalleled
beauty, and what diamonds are
known and loved the world over for:
brilliance, sparkle
and fire.
COLOUR: Colour is determined by
viewing the body of the diamond
from its side. The higher the colour
in a diamond, the rarer it is. The
colour grades for diamonds begin
with D, the whitest, and continue
through the alphabet (E, F, G.). Truly
colourless diamonds (the D grade) are
extremely rare and highly valuable;
a single change in colour grade can
significantly affect a diamond’s value.
CLARITY: Clarity is the degree to
which identifying characteristics
known as inclusions are present in a
diamond. The number, the size,
and the visibility of a diamond’s
inclusions contribute to its grade on
the clarity scale. Diamonds with very,
very small inclusions are graded as
VVS1 or VVS2. Inclusions that can be
seen with the naked eye are graded
I1 to I3. Only the rarest of diamonds
achieve the highest quality of clarity
and have no inclusions at all. In fact,
Flawless (FL) or Internally Flawless
(IF) diamonds represent fewer than
one percent of all diamonds!
CARAT: Carat weight is a standard
of weight used for gemstones. Carat
weight is probably the most wellknown characteristic in diamonds, yet
it is the least important in determining
the brilliance and beauty of a
diamond.
Seek advice from a diamond
professional who would be delighted
to answer any of your questions, and
pleased to show you a selection of
diamonds in a range of prices. And,
when you’re ready, help you select the
perfect match for you.

Picking a first dance song can
be difficult. Use Elite’s F.I.R.S.T
Method to find the perfect song.
Fun: Make sure that no
matter the style, you and
your partner will have fun.
Be sure that the song makes
you smile.
Imagine The Moment:
When you have a song
in mind turn it up and
imagine the moment. Do
you get a feeling deep down
that says you’ve found the
perfect one?
Relate to it: Find a song
that matches the way you
feel about each other or
relates to a past moment in
your lives together. Check
the lyrics. Many couples
make the mistake of not
listening to the whole
track or reading the lyrics
before selecting the first
dance tune. Even though
the title or the chorus of
the song might be entirely
what you want, some songs
have strange lyrical twists
that you might not want to
associate with your
first dance.
Significant: Choose a song
that will stand out long
after its popular days have
passed. Don’t just pick a
song that is trendy. Pick
something that you can
dance to at your 50th and
say in front of all your
friends, “This was our
first dance.”
T – Tempo
Fit the overall tempo of
the song to your dancing
ability and comfort. Most
couples shouldn’t choose
an excessively fast up-beat
track. Be sure to choose a
rhythm that fits you as a
couple, and don’t be afraid
to do a few practice dances
to see how you feel.

8. Do you work by hours or package?
Crystal: I go by package.
Hilda: Package.
Adam: Packages are made up with
different number of hours.
Charro: I go by hours in my packages.
Each package includes hours and
usually a credit or credit plus items.
9. What is your package price range?
There are a lot of different prices out
there for packages. Most experienced
photographers usually charge
anywhere from $1500 - $3500.
10. Do you have any advice?
Crystal: You need to feel comfortable
and click (pardon the pun) with your
photographer. That way you will feel
at ease when you are getting
your photos done. If you feel
uncomfortable or upset you will see it
in the photos.
Hilda: Be very aware of who you
are hiring! Meet with them or have
a phone conversation. Look at more
than a few photos on the website,
because they will always be the best.
Ask to see an entire wedding, look at a
gallery or an album of printed photos.
There are many wonderful talented
photographers in this city. Find one to
suit your style and personality!
Adam: Have an Engagement session.
It is really the best way to get to know
each other. Many people as individuals
are not accustomed to having their
photos taken, let alone as a couple. It
really helps the couple know what the
day of the wedding will be like and
gives the photographer a sense for who
the people are and their personality!
Charro: My advice for couples
looking for the right photographer for
them is to spend some time looking
at each photographer’s work and get
to know them through meeting either
face-to-face or online with Skype or
via a long phone conversation. Ask
to see a full wedding day gallery,
either in print or online, and make
sure you understand their style and
see if it’s something you can see
having for yourself. Your wedding
day is important! Knowing that
your photographer is someone who
can make you smile and laugh is
important. A big part of what we do
involves keeping everything on time in
a fun and friendly manner. Make sure
you not only like your photographer’s
style, but more importantly, you
like the photographer themselves!
Shop around and you will find the
right photographer for you, whether
that’s someone who’s style is funky,
romantic or traditional. There are lots
of options available.
