Interview with Philippe Pozzo
di Borgo inspirer of Untouchables
How did the meeting with Olivier Nakache and Eric Toledano
that led to the film Untouchables go? You said “They soaked
me in, as if they were eating into me. They were pertinent and
impertinent all at the same time”. Is that what convinced you
to work with them?
“It all started with a phone call that I got
while in Essaouira. It was Eric Toledano
and Olivier Nakache on the end of the
line. They introduced themselves as well
as the three full-length features they’d
already produced. I confessed that I know
nothing about cinema even though my
aunt Odile Versois (Marina Vlady’s older
sister) had familiarised us with it. At the
time they were only about 35 years old
but their voices were friendly and their
approach was direct; they offered to come
to Essaouira to meet us, along with their producer Nicolas Duval
Adassowsky, boss of Quad Films. We set up a meeting in a restaurant on the beach of Essaouira and I hurtled down the pier at full
speed with my wheelchair. I suddenly saw two fellows rushing
towards me like bullfighters and I dug my heels in. It was my two
directors roaring with laughter. Lunch was just as hilarious. I
confirmed that they had just the tone between laughter, emotion,
seriousness and rhythm that I found appropriate to deal with
two outsiders, the social one and the physical one, rebuilding
themselves in a mutual respect. The producer, Nicolas, asked
me point blank what I wanted in exchange of participating in

their project. I didn’t quite understand the question since I don’t
belong to the film circle so I just answered: “You can make a
gesture for my organisation, Simon de Cyrène, for the benefit
of multiply-handicapped and brain injured persons”. The answer was immediate, an approval from the trio: “5% net revenue,
producer’s share”. I think it’s the first time that professionals of
mainstream cinema were committing to give a part of their revenue to an organisation in profit of severely disabled persons.
In 2015, you published the book Toi et moi («You and me»,
t/n). What message did you want to convey in that book?
I forced the pace of my travels too much and it cost me nearly 3
years of hospitalisation and various surgeries. Toi et moi, j’y crois
came to me during these long months in the hospital, completely
supine, immobilised, watching the ceiling of my room. Upon
this forced silence, I retrieved some kind of innocence; I was
able to disarm myself, and in this self-decentring that is made
possible by immobility and silence, I was able to find richness in
the encounter of someone, this anonymous person who comes
to care for you or visit you. Yet our society suffers from individualism, a lack of honest relationships. The therapy consists
in observing, as my youngest daughter Widjane would call it,
a daily «Pozzo pause», in order to make oneself available and
consider the other in all their diversity, their weaknesses, their
wealth, their demands and their path to dignity. By spreading
this consideration, our western, globalised society could find the
answers to the urgent challenges that are threatening it.

You agreed to actively support the International Film Festival
on Disability. Why did this event in particular appeal to you
even though you’re very much requested otherwise? In what
ways are you thinking to promote this event in the media?
The film Untouchables as well as the marvellous Samba that followed it and the extraordinary documentary by Eric and Olivier
entitled On aurait pu en faire un film («We could’ve made a film
about it», t/n) – 26 breathtaking minutes about autism and social
marginality; show the power of the image that sticks to human
condition, without pretence but with tremendous humour, kindness and generosity. The works of these two young directors
aren’t done making the lines shift. I will do what the directors and
the producer ask me to do if I can take it upon myself because
they’re the real film roll professionals.

Genesis of the festival
Goals
I
n 2001, as the Festival International des Très Courts is celebrating its third edition, Katia Martin-Maresco joins its team
and works on its worldwide expansion.
In collaboration with the organisation Pandora and its director,
comics artist Philippe Caza, with whom she’d always collaborated, she initiates the Paroles de Femmes (“Women’s words”)
selection. This selection of short films about women is
now being held high by the Ministry of Women’s Affairs.
Along the way, Katia meets a group of students who are
all in a situation of disability: becoming aware of all the
accessibility issues in cinemas, public and cultural places,
she decides – still within the Festival des Très Courts – to
launch the Travelling 34 selection, a selection dedicated
to short films about disability, along with Philippe Caza,
Tristan Incorvaia and Damien Jouteux.
This selection is supported by the inspirer of Untouchables Philippe Pozzo di Borgo. The initiative is such a
success that the team of Travelling 34 decided to create a new
festival for all audiences in early 2015: that’s how the story of the
International Film Festival on Disability begins.
.

people.
That’s what drives the founder and director of the festival, Katia
Martin-Maresco, the sponsor of the festival, designer agnès b.,
as well as Marie-Hélène Delon (speaker).

F
rom September 1st to 16th 2016, an exhibit-train will leave
Copenhagen and conduct a journey through several European capitals and French cities:
Paris
What about the train?
This is the story of the little mermaid who wanted to go to France
to attend a famous film festival on disability. But since she lived in
Denmark, she wondered how she could make the journey... She
first thought of going there by sea but, fascinated as she was by
the biped humans’ earth, she finally decided to go by train and
to stop in train stations all along the way to make some happy
encounters and share earthly adventures on her path.
A train with a mermaid as a figurehead will be chartered from
the city of Copenhagen to its final stop, Cannes. Various events
with themes around disability will be organised all along the
way and the cities the train will stop in. Each stop will be an
opportunity to highlight innovations undertaken by collectivities
and local corporations towards disability. From Copenhagen to
Cannes, a dozen of cities will be served among which Brussels, Paris, Amiens, Lille, Lyon, Marseille, Montpellier, Nîmes,
Monaco...
Once it stops at a station, the doors of the train will open and a
multitude of entertainments and activities will flow out of the
station and swirl around the whole city until the train leaves.
