Dependent Youth Students St d t who h are a partt off the th Child Welfare W lf S t System and d under d the th Supervision of the Court and DCF and who reside in one of the following: Licensed Foster Care Home Licensed Group Home Relative Care Temporary Shelter awaiting one of the above District/School Operations District/School Operations The Juvenile Justice Support Office (JJSO) JJSO staff are trained and are “expert” in issues related to students involved in the juvenile justice system. This includes students who are under the supervision of: o The Department of Children and Families o The Department of Juvenile Justice o The Juvenile Services Department The Juvenile Services Department o The 11th Judicial Circuit Court – Juvenile & Family Divisions District/School Operations The Juvenile Justice Support Office (JJSO) Staff are Miami‐Dade County Public Schools JJSO District Court Liaisons working directly with the Court, agency personnel, and students and their families. JJSO staff provide educational expertise, advocacy, and advisement related to court‐involved students. Liaison Office between M‐DCPS and the Juvenile Justice System and related agencies. DEPENDENT STUDENT SCHOOL STABILITY DEPENDENT STUDENT SCHOOL STABILITY In order to reduce school mobility for dependent youth all dependent students must remain at their youth, current school and are granted an Out‐of‐Area Transfer by the JJSO in District/School Operations. Transfers from the current school are only approved when the transfer is in the best educational interest of the student, and MUST be authorized by the JJSO. Regional Center and school‐site school site staff are NOT authorized to withdraw or transfer a dependent student. Students who are transported to the county jail and are detained at Turner Guilford Knight (TGK) Detention Center or placed in a residential program may be enrolled in an Educational Alternative Outreach Program, e.g. #8017 8017.. All students who are NOT detained are court‐ court‐order to attend school and MUST be actively enrolled in an educational program and attend school on a regular basis basis.. The Juvenile Delinquency System is a rehabilitative system. The goal for juvenile (minor) offenders is to eventually transition back to a regular school setting, unless they have completed a high school completion program while in secure detention. Depending on the severity of the crime, minor offenders may be b placed l d in i residential id i l programs, also l known k as “commitment”. These youth may transition back to regular school once the rehabilitation program is successfully f ll completed. l d All students with open delinquency cases who have been released from detention or who have been withdrawn from a K K‐12 12 setting and are inactive will be court‐ordered to attend school.
