In this issue of the DOME we recognize by name each of you who has supported us during 2011-2012. Your gifts assist the sisters in the many places of ministry and volunteering. Thank you for joining your life journey with the Ursuline Sisters. Your awareness and willingness to respond to our request for support is life-giving to us. Our deepest gratitude and assurance of prayers flow from our thankful hearts for each of you. Your care for us, which you have shown in many, many ways, calls me to share with you our congregation’s focus for this present year. At our missioning service in July, the Ursuline Sisters, our associates and co-workers were invited to use as a guiding statement: “Fan into flame the spark of the Spirit within you.” During this annual ritual, we imagined the Spirit moving in and around each of us through the use of a red cloth and small candles. It may have been easy to wave a red cloth around or to carry candles during the July service. It can be fairly easy also to light a candle by the flick of a match, or to speak of the spark we have each been given by God. After all, on a hot, bright July afternoon there is no need to be concerned how much light the sparks from the small candles are giving off, or to push ourselves on how much we really believe the Spirit’s spark is within each one of us. We can leave such concerns or beliefs for other times. Now, a few months later, I invite each of you, who may or may not have been part of our service last July, to let your heart take in this statement: “Fan into flame the spark of the Spirit within you.” This sentence speaks of the incredible value and giftedness of every human being, as well as of all of creation. Only with tenderness, respect, patience, trust, nurturing, honesty, and acceptance can the spark within you, within the person next to you, and within me, be seen and honored. The fanning called for here is not about winning those gold, silver, or bronze Fan into flame the spof ark the Spirit within you. medals that may have thrilled us while watching the summer Olympian athletes in London. It is not being the victor on the football field in the gridiron contests this fall, or in the upcoming national elections in November. How easily we can fall into the myth that winning in these ways is what really counts in life. No, the fanning called for here is like the intense love and care of the quiet coming to life that expectant parents live with during the months of a pregnancy, or the seeds that bear lovely fruit or flowers in your garden after your careful planting months before. The fanning has to be continuous, since the spark of life within cannot be denied nourishment and breathe if it is to be sustained and grow into the flame that it was intended to be by God. Affirming the good of another, choosing to be a benefactor to a congregation like ours, taking on the responsibility of reaching out to those in need, are all part of fanning into flame the spark of the Spirit within you. Witnessing to our God’s love and care for each of us brings blessings and honors the God present in the spark of the Spirit in our persons. Please accept this invitation to join with the Ursuline Sisters, associates and co-workers in the days, weeks, and months ahead to “fan into flame the spark of the Spirit within you.” I believe together we can create life-giving actions and energy as our sparks unite to become bright flames. Let me know how your fanning is going! Known as “Community Days,” the week included three days of meetings and reflection for the sisters, a covenant renewal ceremony for associates, missioning services, and a Jubilee Mass. A special Mass and brunch for benefactors on July 22 helped set the tone for the week ahead. More than 130 guests and sisters filled the Chapel of the Immaculate Conception for the 11:00 A.M. Eucharistic Liturgy. In a reflection offered during the celebration, Sister Lynn Jarrell, president of the Ursuline Sisters of Louisville, graciously thanked the donors for their various expressions of support, acknowledging that sometimes it is difficult to take on the responsibility of being a benefactor, especially when times and circumstances may be uneasy or discouraging. Following Mass, the sisters and guests gathered in the Motherhouse dining room for a savory brunch. On Wednesday, July 25, members of the Ursuline Associate Call gathered for a meeting and their annual covenant renewal ceremony. Read more about their special gathering on pages 6 and 7. Sisters, associates, employees, and friends came together on Thursday morning at a Jubilee Liturgy to celebrate the milestone anniversaries of eight Ursulines: Sister Mary Anthony Wargel (80 years); Sister Andrea Callahan, Sister Mary Yvonne Moran and Sister Shirley Ann Simmons (70 years); Sister Loretta Guenther, Sister Helen Marie Lutz and Sister Sarah Stauble (60 years); Sister Mary Jo Gramig (50 years). Sister Rosalita Wuersch and Sister Consuelo Price were recognized posthumously at the Liturgy. They would have celebrated their 80th and 70th year, respectively. During his homily, Father Bill Fichteman congratulated all the sisters for their combined 520 years of service, noting that their work and virtue will live on because they have influenced so many lives for so many generations. Following lunch, Community Days came to a close later that afternoon with a missioning service, whereby Leadership officially sent forth into the new year Ursuline employees, associates and sisters to “fan into flame the spark of the Spirit” within them. Jubilarians Express Gratitude It would be impossible for the 2012 Jubilarians to personally thank all who recognized their anniversary with cards, gifts, Mass intentions and more. Together, they offer this message: To our beloved benefactors and friends: We extend our deep gratitude and appreciation for the many prayers, good wishes, and remembrances as we celebrated our jubilees. We thank God for the multiple graces and blessings He has bestowed upon all of us. Please be assured of our continued prayers for you and and service with you. Gratefully, Sister Mary Anthony Wargel, Sister Andrea Callahan, Sister Mary Yvonne Moran, Sister Shirley Ann Simmons, Sister Loretta Guenther, Sister Helen Marie Lutz, Sister Sarah Stauble, and Sister Mary Jo Gramig. It marked the first ye year for what will become an “annual gathering,” offering associates an opportunity for group prayer p and discussion of goals. Following the gathering, associates were joined by their associate companions companion and Ursuline Sisters in the Motherhouse Chapel for a special covenant renewal celebration. One by one, a total of 26 associates renewed their commitment to the U Ursuline Sisters, promising to join the Ursuline Sisters in prayer, ministry and community in ways appropriate to their lifestyle. Also included in the covenant renewal ceremony was the singing of the Communion of the Saints. Names of saints, both officially canonized and not officially canonized, who laid the foundation for the Ursuline community were invoked. It is always moving to sing this Litany for without those who have gone before us we would not have the blessing of the Ursuline Community. We give thanks that they had broad shoulders upon which we stand today. Two days later, associates participated along with sisters and Ursuline employees in the Missioning Service which serves as the closing of Community Days. The inclusion of the associates in the missioning service serves as a reminder that the associates are called to live out the Ursuline Charism. Each associate reflects this Charism in his/her own life, calling and ministry. It is indeed a very powerful experience to witness each sister, associate, and employee embrace the calling to reflect that special Charism. The entire Community Days celebration serves as a reminder that we stand on the shoulders of all those who attended similar days in the past: the sisters who gave their lives to reaching out to others; and the associates who blazed the trail for those of us who sat in the pews that very afternoon. He had been an associate since 1994. Stanley was a beloved professor, gifted scholar, university leader, devoted Catholic, and cherished father and husband. He had a strong academic career and retired from teaching at West Virginia University in December 1992. He was active in his local parish and participated in many volunteer and service areas including serving on Catholic school boards in Kansas and West Virginia. While at the St. John University Parish in Morgantown, he initiated a partnership between St. John’s and St. Thomas Aquinas Church in Kingston, Jamaica. Stanley is survived by his wife of 60 years, Betty Jane Hammack, six children, 27 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Ursuline DOME: Continuing the Legacy of Spirtuality and Service | FALL 2012 7 Leap and the net will appear. - John Borroughs (1837-1921) Ginny Schaeffer, Director of Angela Merici Center for Spirituality There is a wonderful scene in the movie, Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, where Indy must make a decision of life, death and faith. In search for the Holy Grail, he and his father are confronted by Nazis in the cave that has been the resting place of the Grail for centuries. His father is mortally wounded and in order to save him Indy must step off into a chasm with the faith that a bridge will appear. There are just a few moments while the adventurer weighs the possibilities, looking at his notebook, at the chasm, all of the cups and chalices on the other side and his dying father. Indy literally takes a step onto nothing and the bridge does appear. Then he must choose the correct cup. His choice? A common clay cup. He races back to his father who drinks from it and is cured of his mortal wound. This scene in a commercial movie gives such a clear picture of what faith is and what faith is not. For many of us, faith has come to mean an espousal of certain beliefs, dogmas and doctrines. This was the way many of us we were trained. Those of us of a certain age learned our faith by memorization. We can still recite the answers to questions from the Baltimore Catechism and the prayers from our childhood. We speak from memory the creed of our faith tradition each Sunday. Since the Protestant Reformation, faith has come to mean an intellectual assent to a set of religious tenants. Yet, in his actions to save his father, Indy demonstrates that faith is much more than intellectual assent. Faith is alive, lively, pushy and transforming. Faith is trust in an 8 FALL 2012 | www.ursulinesisterslouisville.org other. It is faithfulness and it is a way of seeing.i Trusting an other, whether it is another human being or God, can be hard for us Americans of the 21st century. We are well known for our individualism and hard work. We are self-reliant. We were weaned on clichés such as, “If you want something done right, then do it yourself.” We want to believe that we got to where we are without the help of others. Nothing could be further from the truth. Without so many others we could not accomplish what we are able to accomplish. Farmers, truckers and grocery stockers provide us food. Miners and electricians supply the energy that we need. Engineers and line workers make the cars that get us from point A to point B. Our families care for us, give us a sense of belonging, stability, love and support. “What about God? Do I really need to trust God for my life, my happiness, my well-being? I’m doing pretty well for myself.” The best person to ask that question of is someone who is working a 12-step program. She or he will give you a resounding “YES!!” because they have come to understand that without God, they might be totally dysfunctional and probably dead. Persons addicted to alcohol, drugs, sex, codependency or other things know, in their heart of hearts, that it is only by giving up the belief that they can control their lives, and trust in the love and strength found in their Higher Power and their recovery community, that they can stay sober, clean and alive. Trusting in God and others who are trustworthy keeps us alive, not just breathing and going through the motions, but ALIVE. Living a life of faith requires us to be faithful — a person of fidelity, who is loyal and committed at the deepest level of our being. This allegiance is not to a set of beliefs, dogmas or doctrines. This fidelity is to God, the One to which the creeds, dogmas and doctrines point.ii The opposite of fidelity is infidelity, or in religious terms, idolatry. There are so many would-be gods that scream their promises and pleasures to us that it is extremely hard not to be sucked in. The list is almost endless, but here are a few of the timeless possibilities: love of money, power, nation, achievement, affluence, etc.... How do you know where your faithfulness lies? Where do you invest your passion, resources of time, wealth and ability? Or, as Jesus put it, “Do you love God with all that you are and do you love all that God loves?” Faith is also a matter of seeing. Jesus’ message was loud and clear, “Repent! The Kingdom of God is at hand.” Repentance is much more than individuals weeping and declaring their sorrow for their wrongdoings. The Greek word, metanoia, which has been translated into “repent,” means to change the way we think, the way we perceive, and the way we see what is happening to us and to the world. Jesus is admonishing us to see the reign or ultimate reality of God that is right here, not in some paradisal, distant future, but right now. Some days, this can really take faith; and that is what Jesus is calling us to. We are called to be people of faith, people who can leap before the net appears because we trust the One who provides the net. Our fidelity has taught us that God is faithful and our vision has been changed. i Marcus Borg, The Heart of Christianity: Rediscovering a Life of Faith (New York, HarperCollins: 2003), pp. 28-37. ii Ibid, pp. 32-33 The Angela Merici Center for Spirituality Upcoming Programs through 2012 Faith: Use It or Lose It: A Seasonal Retreat October 19 at 7 PM through October 20 at 4 PM Reading the Gospel of Luke & the Book of Acts with Hearts & Minds October 22, 29 & November 5 Sabbath Moments November 10 & December 8 Taizé Prayer November 12 & December 10 For more information contact the Angela Merici Center for Spirituality at (502)896-3945 or www.amcspirituality.org. Ursuline DOME: Continuing the Legacy of Spirtuality and Service | FALL 2012 9 Peruvian Journal “Oro, Plata, Cobre y Cajamarca sigue pobre.” (Gold, Silver, Copper and Cajamarca continues to be Poor.) is one of the two principal shouts of the people, as they walk in the marches in the different cities of Peru and provinces of the Department of Cajamarca. The other cry is “Agua no Oro.” (Water Not Gold). For months now, there has been a major conflict between the people of Cajamarca and the Yanachocha Gold and Copper Mine owned by Newmont, whose headquarters are in Denver, Colorado. The regional president of Cajamarca, Señor Gregorio Santos, has fought for the healthy lives of his people against the “Conga Project.” In July 2011, when the new president of Peru, Señor Ollanta Humala Tasa, took office, he promised in his acceptance speech to protect the environment and not allow the mines to contaminate the water and the lives of the people in any way. Presently, he is saying that he must respect the agreement made between the former president of Peru and the Newmont Mining Company. However, 64% of the population believe that this has been one the new president´s greatest errors —not opposing the Conga Project. Recently, President Humala and his advisors sent two Catholic priests as facilitators between the mining company and the regional president of Cajamarca and his group who support the well-being of the people. As I write this article, the dialogue is still taking place. The saddest part of this conflict is that five people have lost 10 FALL 2012 | www.ursulinesisterslouisville.org their lives in the protests and, of course, Señor Santos blames President Humala for these deaths. Recently, another sad incident occurred. One of the mothers who participated in the parish soup kitchen had a fatal accident as she and her husband were cutting off a huge branch from one of the trees near their home. The branch fell on top of her and she was killed instantly. The young couple has a daughter and a son. Kathy and two women went to their home in the town of Sunuden to have a prayer service at the wake. The following day, her funeral Mass was held in San Miguel with our church so full of mourners that there was standing room only. Our prayers for Olga Hernandez and her family continue to this day. On a much lighter note Sue, Yuli, Carol and Kathy have had the anticipated visit of Lee Kirchner, one of our Ursuline Sisters who began our mission in 1964, and worked in Peru for 40 years. As Lee visited in both San Miguel and in Carmen de la Legua, many of the people came to see her throughout the days. The stories and the laughter flowed easily among us all. While Lee was visiting in Carmen de la Legua, the mayor, Señor Daniel Lecca, a former student of our school, Santa Angela Merici, presented Lee with a medal and a scroll (photos at left). While Lee was in San Miguel, she made the annual retreat with Kathy and our associates. Those on the retreat contracted a mini-van and 22 of us rode to one of the smaller towns about an hour from San Miguel, called Jangalá. The small church there is built on a hill with many steps leading to the Lord of the Ascension Chapel. Saint Angela Merici was very present to us in a special way that day. From left, Sisters Sue, Kathy, Carol, Lee, and Yuli. On July 4th Yuli, Lee, Carol, Sue, and Kathy planned a day together. Sue often facilitates meetings for the Mercy Sisters in Lima. They kindly lent us their home for a break in our routine and to be able to celebrate Independence Day, placing our American flag in the center of the table and waving red, white and blue balloons as we smiled broadly for the photo (at right). Our Peru Community was given another special gift by being able to participate in our Ursuline Sister Community Days in Louisville by way of the Internet! With “GoToMeeting.Com” we were able to be present for the three days of meetings for which we are truly grateful. As I finish this article, our support group for the handicapped is planning its first therapy sessions in the three rooms of the Rehabilitation Center for the Handicapped of San Miguel. A speech/hearing/language therapist and a physical therapist are coming from Trujillo the first week of August to do evaluations for the special needs persons on our list. At this same time, the members of the technical area of the mayor´s office will be working on the fence for the Rehab Center that will allow far greater security for the property, for the materials and for all who will be using the facility. We Ursulines and the Peruvian people with whom we work and serve are eternally grateful to each of you for your prayers and support of our mission. You, and your loved ones, have our daily prayers always. With love and gratitude, Kathy, Carol, Sue and Yuli The Ursuline Associates in Peru sent back with Sister Lee a handmade card reminding the Louisville Associates of their “friendship and prayers despite the distance.” Ursuline DOME: Continuing the Legacy of Spirtuality and Service | FALL 2012 11 Are You Ursuline Affected? Have you been inspired by an Ursuline Sister? If so, we would love to hear from you. She truly was able to enjoy every little thing in God’s creation—and share her discoveries in her poetry. Both my husband, Dave and I were taught by her—he, at Holy Spirit, and I at Ursuline College.” – Betty Higgins Schuler, UC ‘62 “I was privileged to have been educated by the Ursulines for 12 years…elementary (eight years) at St. Michael in Frostburg, MD, and for four years at Ursuline Academy in Cumberland, MD. My father was a coal-miner and my mother sacrificed to give me the best education. Thank you….” – M. Antonietta Peretti, UA-Cumberland, MD ‘46 Correction: We regret that an error was made in the Ursuline Affected section in the last issue of the DOME. In the memory submitted by Mary Helen Zahn (AMHS ’66, UC/Bellarmine ’70) we incorrectly identified the Sister Mary William she was referring to as Sister Mary William Klipsch. It should have been Sister Mary William Lehmenkuler. Our apologies for the error. “Remembering the Ursuline Sisters in my will is Thinking about including the Ursuline Sisters in your Will?
