Family Support Changes Lives 2014 A N N UA L R E P O R T We are changing lives by offering programs that help children, teens, young adults, their parents and caregivers address the challenges of emotional, behavioral, mental health and substance abuse disorders to achieve wellness and resilience. Guided Pathways Executive Director Susan Millender at the 2014 Harvard Graduate School of Education Family Engagement Institute (first row, fifth from the right). Letter from Susan Millender, Executive Director and Evelyn ‘Sunny’ Ficca, Board President Our second year as a King County-serving family support organization brings new and exciting challenges of growth. Engaging families across the County in community conversations on mental and emotional health fuels our growth, giving us a wealth of information about the community’s strengths and needs this year. Based on this information, we are better able to offer our neighbors opportunities to help them navigate resources and find their own unique paths to wellbeing. The outstanding contributions of our donors, volunteers and staff make it possible for us to achieve successes in meeting the community’s growing needs for one-to-one peer support, parent classes, and family social connectedness. We are thankful for our expanding partnerships with King County’s school districts who support our vision of a community where children and youth struggling with emotional, behavioral, mental health or substance abuse disorders are supported to reach their full potential, without fear of stigma. Special gratitude to Renton School District for inviting us to join their contingency and 40 representatives of other King County school districts at the Harvard Graduate School of Education 2014 Family Engagement Institute. The time spent connecting, and the shared learning, informs our family engagement framework to meet the needs of diverse families, including those who struggle with children’s complex emotional and behavioral needs, and engage them in policy-making roles. One of the greatest measures of our success are the stories of the families we serve. One such story is shared in this report. This story underscores the value in supporting family members to stay together and support each other. We deeply appreciate a caring community, our Board of Directors, staff and volunteers for making such stories possible. Susan Millender Executive Director Evelyn ‘Sunny’ Ficca Board President 1 Meet Mary and Julia Mary Cole had become frustrated dealing with the difficulties of parenting an acting-out teen in a stressful juvenile justice case. A divorced mother of two, she was angry with the court, the doctor, the school and her ex for seeming not to hear and respond to her cry for help and needs for support for her struggling daughter. Mary’s anger was so palpable that it obscured the underlying sadness and worry about her daughter and the constant conflict that marked their relationship. Answers to the family’s challenges seemed too few and far between. Julia’s estrangement from her mother grew. It wasn’t until Mary began to work with Guided Pathways Parent Partner, Gary Streile, that she began to see light at the end of what had become a very long, dark tunnel. “Gary helped me to see how my frustration was having a negative impact on my communication with Julia,” Mary says. “He helped me to understand that Julia’s choices were part of her personal journey, not a reflection of my parenting. He worked with me to brainstorm ideas about effective choices in the way I communicated with my daughter and at court hearings, school meetings and with treatment providers. I learned that I could detach with love and disconnect from arguing with Julia. I could focus instead on my love for her.” “The conversation began to be about two family members who love each other.” - Mary Cole BOARD OF DIRECTORS 2 Evelyn Ficca, President Lisa Fabatz Jamie Weber, Vice President Sharon Ittner Ron Jaeger, Treasurer Crystal Lyons Sidra Ing, Secretary Crystal Perry Hunday Sylvester, Youth Representative Jody Schreven Jerry Butler As a result, Mary says she became less critical and more calm and articulate in communicating her own feelings, thoughts and wishes. “Instead of endless arguments, the conversation began to be about two family members who love each other.” In a new environment that fostered a focus on thoughtful, caring communication, and self-advocacy, Mary and her daughter reconnected. Their issues and challenges were faced successfully as a family. They celebrated their strengths together.
