A LETTER FROM THE CEO
Dear Friends,
Are you weary of bad news? Or, headlines that tear at your heart? Are you exhausted from feelings of overwhelming sadness as you hear and watch human
suffering that goes way beyond what one can imagine? There is a balance – and it tips the scales big time!
The major reason that I am entering my 31st year at Perspectives is my love of a “good story”! A story that so fills one with hope and feelings of well-being that
you would leap tall buildings to hear one more. Such is my life at Perspectives – watching the scales tip over to the good, time after time. It’s why I and so many
others of us arrive each day, energized with anticipation. We know the day will not end that we don’t hear a good story.
My favorite story is always around the woman who “rises from the ashes,” straddling seemingly insurmountable hurdles caused by years of addiction. A close
runner-up is the child’s face that once was filled with fear and anxiety but now smiles widely with confidence, happiness, and a new sense of safety. A few teeth
missing just adds to my happiness, as I know we got them in time. Thinking more – perhaps the best story is seeing a mother reunited with her child. What
joy!
Now, no longer are these stories only for our staff to experience. Each day you, too, can have that wonderful
feeling of well-being and a new sense of awareness that our world really is a great place with wonderful
happenings. You just have to link into our blog each day. You will be inspired. I promise.
2012 was not only a great story of achievement for our Perspectives families but also for our organization.
As you read our highlights, you will see a great story unfold with new funding from United Way, the
Minnesota Department of Education, and the first phase of our capital drive, Seeds of Change:
Transforming Families and Futures, completed.

OUR MISSION
Perspectives was founded in the Twin Cities West Metro
suburbs in 1976 by a small group of individuals with a
desire to foster community awareness around the issue
of chemical dependency. From that first step threeand-a-half decades ago, we have grown into an awardwinning, multi-service agency, now located in St. Louis
Park, Minnesota.
Our goals at Perspectives are to:
ƒƒ Provide safe and supportive housing programs for
homeless/recovering women and children, and
to assist their return to the economic and social
mainstream
ƒƒ Lift families out of poverty by providing them with
the tools to succeed
ƒƒ Increase employment opportunities for women in
poverty
ƒƒ Assist in the reunification of parents and children
ƒƒ Advance the parenting skills of high risk parents
ƒƒ Give at-risk and homeless children the skills and
opportunity to excel academically and socially
ƒƒ Provide daily nutrition to at-risk and homeless
children
ƒƒ Provide support, parenting education and advocacy
to parents who are court-ordered for supervised
visitation
SUPPORTIVE HOUSING
Program Goal: To return homeless, recovering women and their
children back to the social and economic mainstream.
Our 52-unit Supportive Housing Program, the largest in Minnesota,
provides services to a clientele of recovering and homeless women
and their children. Located in St. Louis Park in an affordable housing
neighborhood called Louisiana Court, we house 52 mothers and
more than 120 children at any given time.
When first accepted into the program our residents move into a
completely furnished apartment, which sets us apart from other
supportive housing programs. They then begin to develop their
individualized plan with our case managers. This plan includes
reunifying with children, gaining job skills/education, relapse
prevention, stabilizing their mental health issues and learning
positive parenting skills.

KIDS CONNECTION
Program Goal: To increase the academic, social and health outcomes of homeless and at-risk children,
spanning children from kindergarten through middle school.
Just one mile down the road from our housing campus, Perspectives’ Family Center hosts our Kids Connection
program, a 21st Century Learning Center. This comprehensive “extended day academic environment” is
taught by five licensed teachers and over 50 trained volunteers. The program operates 5 days a week, 12
months a year.
Reach for the Stars provides

reading that incorporates many
learning tools, reading worksheets,
activities, games, & reinforcement
exercises.
PARENTING TIME
Program Goal: To provide a safe and nurturing
environment for children to meet with their noncustodial parents and to provide parenting support
for at-risk parents.
The Parenting Time program reunites non-custodial
parents who are court-ordered by Hennepin County
to have supervision while visiting their children.
Through coaching and mentoring, this program’s
services are designed to interrupt destructive cycles
so that children can once again feel safe with a
parent who is committed to reestablishing trust and
care for their child.
Parenting Time helps foster the parent/child
relationship in a positive, welcoming environment
that promotes healthy and appropriate interaction
between parent and child, with an emphasis on child
advocacy. This outcome results from implementing
strategies that build on the existing strengths of the
family.

Clinical Services
Program Goal: To provide integrated primary health, substance abuse, and mental health services to
supportive housing clients for the purpose of increasing the client’s stabilization and long-term outomes.
Located in Perspectives Family Center, mental health and substance abuse services are provided under the
direction of our Vice President of Clinical Services, who is a Licensed Independent Clinical Social Worker.
She is also approved as a clinical supervisor by the Minnesota Board of Behavioral Health and Therapy. Our
Clinical Services Program is also staffed with Adult Rehabilitation Mental Health workers and mental health
counselors. Appoximately 90% of our supportive housing population is diagnosed with having co-occuring
substance abuse and mental health disorders. Clinical services provides assessment, diagnosis, rehabilitative
services, individualized treatment planning, therapy, and consultative services within the agency.
