Ms. Yerby’s kindergarteners
Art and books go together, believes Donley art teacher Kelly Yerby,
who likes to read to her students and then let them loose on related art
projects. Yerby’s students recently got an influx of new books through
a Classroom Grant from ELEF. One of her Kindergarteners said,
“There are so many good books here...I just want to sit down and read
them all. Reading Miss Spider's Tea Party sure inspired this young reader!

Mary Lou Turnbull welcomes students from around the world to her
MacDonald Middle School classroom. Many of these students are just
learning English, a process made easier through her innovative use of
MP3 players in her classroom. “Students hear the sound and intonation
of the words as they read along with the book,” says Turnbull, “much
as if we had an English speaker sitting beside them.” Your donations
purchased six MP3 players for these English language learners.

graphing calculators, purchased with an ELEF grant, improved my
teaching? Whether perfecting a cookie recipe through stoichiometry or
launching the highest bottle rocket using Boyle's Law, math is integral
to chemistry. When all students have equal access to critical tools, the
learning environment is strengthened. So, start your graphers ... and let

Access to classroom technology
continues to be a priority. Because
of your generous donations, ELEF
was able to grant Marble $9,000 to
buy seven Smartboards for classrooms; Donley ($2,055) for Smart
Response Clickers; Pinecrest
($2,606) for Smartboards; ELHS
($1,500) for graphing calculators
and ($1,460) for document cameras.
Donley received three grants totaling
$2,517. Marble received four grants
totaling $9,880. Pinecrest received
eight grants totaling $4,565. Red
Cedar received three grants totaling
$2,300. Glencairn received one grant
for $250. MacDonald Middle School
received eight grants for $3,160 and
ELHS received 12 grants totaling
$7,202.
