Haven House Headlines Spring 2014 Full Circle: From Helped to Helping by Keiondra Grace, Haven House Staff BOARD OF DIRECTORS Kimberly Hall President Roman Tyszkiewicz Vice President Suzanne Olivier Secretary Dan Ilgen Treasurer Carol Bidigare Tracey Mullaney Debbie Henrie Parks Jeff Powers Haven House is an organization that is very dear to my heart. As a junior at Central Michigan University, I began to look into internship opportunities for the completion of my undergraduate degree. My mother suggested that I contact Haven House, a homeless shelter in East Lansing, of which we were past residents. I vaguely remembered our time there: mostly the awesome collection of Little Golden Books that people at the shelter would read, and the best friend my mother gained through rooming together in the house. My mother believed if I was to get the internship at Haven House, it would be something like a full circle experience. She discussed how Haven House had been her salvation so many years ago in her journey to become what she deemed a successful member of society. Upon receiving the internship and beginning my work at Haven House I was given hands-on work with the various interconnected parts that make Haven House the force it is within our community. I experienced firsthand daily meetings with residents to successfully acquire their own housing, trips to individual’s homes that had successfully completed the program, and tailed the director as she made phone calls to secure funding and appear at events to discuss their amazing work. Personally, I maintained and updated informational displays on available local jobs and housing for the residents to view each day, and organized family classes to teach our clients skills to successfully navigate the world once outside of Haven House. When my internship ended, I vowed to keep in touch and volunteer when possible. Executive Director While making the transition from undergraduate to graduate studies, I was contacted by Haven House to take a staff position as Shelter Coordinator, and I could not say anything but yes. As Shelter Coordinator I worked directly with families daily to secure housing. Working at Haven House full time provided me with invaluable experience assisting disadvantaged populations, while I continued my graduate education at Michigan State University. Urgent Needs When MSU offered me a position with free tuition recently, everyone at Haven House urged me to take it. I left Haven House as an employee, but again continued my connection through volunteer work. Recently, I was asked by Haven House to temporarily fill in as Transitional Housing Coordinator, which I have gladly accepted. I am happy to assist Haven House whenever needed, because I believe in the work we do. Nathan Triplett Angela Mayeaux Help defray our operating costs by donating items on this list. Families use these items both during their stay and upon leaving the shelter. Bath Towels Dish Soap Laundry Detergent Deodorant Simple Green Cleaner See more at HavenHouseEL.org Haven House strives to maintain the family structure through rough periods, while empowering families to successfully acquire life skills and permanent housing. I definitely see my time at Haven House as a full circle experience, and am truly grateful on behalf of my family, as well as proud to be a part of such a positive, life-altering organization. Making a Merry Christmas! We were excited to hear from an anonymous donor this year who provided a gift of $1000 for a family in need. We were pleased to offer this gift to Evelina, a single mother of four, working two jobs, who had recently moved into her own home. We are so proud of Evelina and the work she has done to move her family into a stable, affordable home. Thank you for continuing to support Haven House, the work we do and the people we help. Annual Appeal Raises Nearly $90,000 to Re-House Homeless Families in Ingham County Generous supporters of Haven House—like you!—donated $88,829 during our annual Holiday Appeal which began at Thanksgiving 2013 and continued through January of 2014. Many donors made this important gift in addition to supporting Haven House is other ways throughout the year. We are truly grateful for all support we receive which allows us to better serve moms, dads and kids as they work to organize their budget and secure housing. Many donors used our secure online donation page at www.HavenHouseEL.org to make their gift using their credit or debit cards. Still more sent checks in the mail or even brought in their contributions to our office (we’re open 8 am– 8pm, 365 days a year). Thanks to the individuals, families, businesses and groups who took part in this effort. We know you feel great joy because of your giving, and rightly so—you’ve provided hope and a fresh start for families re-establishing basic stability in their lives. Thanks for helping us face a new year better prepared to meet crucial family needs in our community. As we progress through the year, we hope you’ll take advantage of other ways to stay involved with Haven House, including joining us at our celebration at the University Club on April 17. We look forward to keeping in touch with you. Please see Page 6 for our Thank You! Adopt-A-Family 2013 Surpasses Expectations The 2013 Adopt-A-Family for Christmas program surpassed all expectations. With the help of many amazing donors we were able to assist 135 families during the Christmas season. The generosity of all donors this year was inspiring. As families entered the shelter to pick up their gift they became speechless at the support that they had be given during the holiday season. 2 “I have worked so hard getting back on my feet this year after becoming ill and losing my job. I have never had to worry in the past how I was going to provide a Christmas for my family. This year with the help of my amazing donors I did not have to worry. I cannot put into words how much your help means to me.” Looking for a Speaker? - Sam, Father of 3, Haven House Resident Haven House Executive Director Angie “I don’t know what you got me for Christmas, but I am so excited to open Mayeaux would be happy to speak to my presents on Christmas!” - Mary, Age 8, Haven House Resident your organization.
