2010 annual report - Georges River Land Trust
2010
ANNUAL
REPORT
2010 was GRLT’s 23rd year of operation and we continue to grow as an organization. So many of our accomplishments are dependent on the support of our members and the hard work of our volunteers. Thank you very
much!
Interest in conservation in the St. George River watershed continues to grow as exhibited by the number of
landowners who contact us to discuss options for conserving their land. We saw another 11% increase in memberships this year, and the number of donations to support our work increased by 23%. We’ve had several new
volunteers join the ranks and we’re delighted to have their skills and energy focused on conservation.
We began our second year of preparing for accreditation through the Land Trust Alliance. Our team created
or updated three necessary policies, established processes for their implementation, and began compiling the
documentation to demonstrate our actions. We contracted for help in reviewing all the project files dating back 23
years and assuring that each file is complete. We collaborated with the Maine Coast Heritage Trust and several
other land trusts to exchange products, ideas, and expertise so we are sharing the workload and learning from
each other.
We continue to have dedicated staff that bring vitality, creativity, and great enthusiasm to all we do. Linda Arnold
organizes all our financial records and many fundraising and outreach tasks. Jay Astle cares for our conserved
properties and oversees the trails program. Bruce Gerard took the lead on trails projects from one end of the
watershed to the other. Annette Naegel works with landowners to conserve their lands and our neighboring land
trusts on regional conservation issues. This year we welcomed our first AmeriCorps member, Mike Vilchensky, who
worked on trails and outreach projects.
The Board of Directors and staff of Georges River Land Trust are grateful for the support of all of the people and
organizations acknowledged in this annual report. Thank you for helping us protect the land forever.

Land Protection
Five families donated conservation easements on 426
acres of valuable wildlife habitat, riverfront, woodlands and
farmland in Montville, Appleton, Cushing, Owls Head, and St.
George. These gifts bring our conserved land total to 2,641
acres. Several of the donors held land that had been in their
families for multiple generations so their gifts signified a lasting commitment and testament to the cultural heritage of our
region. All of the easement donors expressed great appreciation in having the opportunity to permanently protect their land
for the benefit of future generations. Several were able to take
advantage of the new charitable gift tax incentive for donated
conservation easements. Their gifts of conservation are an
inspiration to us all.
In preparation for LTA accreditation, we completed several
necessary policies and procedures related to the process of
evaluating, approving, and stewarding lands held in fee and
conservation easements, as well assuring complete recordkeeping.
Stewardship
As part of the management plan for Pleasant Point Nature
Preserve in Cushing, a new hiking trail was completed in mid
summer, and an opening celebration was held in conjunction
with a workshop on moss and lichen identification. With the
assistance of our Volunteer Stewards, we completed monitoring on 100% of our conserved properties. We continue to
work with owners of easement lands to consider their requests
for new uses, and with new buyers of conserved properties
to answer questions regarding the easement language prior
to closing. The Board considered and adopted an easement
enforcement policy.
Trails
We partnered with the town of Thomaston to improve the
Village Trail component of the Thomaston Green redevelopment. The centerpiece of the project is a granite overlook that
offers fantastic views up and down the St. George River, and
interpretive signs designed by GRLT. We installed two new
footbridges and 750 feet of new bog bridging on the trails
this year. With the help of Mike Vilchensky, our AmeriCorps
member, the trails crew maintained all 40 miles of the Georges
Highland Path, and scouted and mapped new areas for future
trail expansion.
Events & Outreach
GRLT made several enhancements to our outreach program in 2010. We created a new look and feel for the newsletter, Currents, beginning with the spring edition. The 2009
Annual Report was created in color and made available via the
website. We renovated our monthly email newsletter, Ripples,
which is now distributed to over 850 email addresses. As of
the end of the year, we have over 150 “friends” of our Facebook page.
We hosted 22 Walks & Talks throughout the year. The
tour of Appleton Creamery, where owners Brad and Caitlin
Hunter make superb goat cheese, was a great family event.
The Maine Sunday Telegram had a front page article in their
Outdoors section in May featuring the creamery and GRLT.
Wanda Garland, local naturalist, led a walk through the Rockland bog where unusual bog plants were identified, and Seven
Tree Pond was explored by a flotilla of 42 canoes and kayaks
in June!
The staff has been involved with several “quests” along the
St. George River, an education program of the Quebec-Labrador Foundation. This offers a wonderful opportunity for school
age children to learn about natural history and information
about a way of life connected to the St. George River.
On a beautiful June afternoon, we hosted a Celebration of
the St. George River at Lyman-Morse Boatbuilding in Thomaston. Guests were treated to a boat trip down the river, a tour
of the boatyard, or an archaeological presentation prior to a
festive evening of food, music, raffle, and silent auction.
The Gardens in the Watershed tour visited 6 gardens in
Cushing, South Thomaston, and Thomaston in July. Even
though it was a rainy Sunday, more than 450 people came
out to see the beautiful gardens featuring views overlooking
the St. George River, sculptures, a working vegetable farm, a
shade garden, and a steeply sloped perennial garden.
A heartfelt thanks to the many
friends and supporters who contributed to the success of the
Georges River Land Trust between
January 1 and December 31, 2010.
The following includes both gifts
and pledges and the * indicates a
payment on a multi-year pledge.
