5th June 2015
Sunday 19th - Sunday 26th July
FULL LINE UP REVEALED
The waiting is over, Holt Festival, North Norfolk’s award winning international festival of music, drama, visual art, literary giants, talks, dance
and comedy, has announced its full programme for 2015, its seventh year.
New announcements that complete an exceptional line up for new artistic director Charles Pugh’s first year include an exciting new theatre
production, risqué cabaret, top London comedians, poetry, flamenco and exhibitions, including work from world renowned artists rarely seen in
the UK.
Charles Pugh commented “For my first Festival here in Holt I wanted to ensure quality arts and entertainment across a range of styles and
disciplines throughout the week. I like to think we’ve achieved that and if the reactions to the shows we have already announced are anything to
go by it would appear that our audiences, both new and existing, agree. I’m especially excited to be bringing innovative new work such as The
Spruce Goose and Seastar Opera’s Hello Mr Gershwin to Holt alongside some daring cabaret and big names and personalities like Steve Harley
(right), Jenny Eclair & Margaret Hodge, Steeleye Span (below), Geno Washington, Jeffrey Archer
and Blofeld & Baxter.”
The annual Holt Art Prize has also just been announced and once again many of the town’s art
galleries will be taking part in the art-trail. There are two great free art exhibitions, with works drawn
from public and private collections, running throughout the Festival. Pop Goes Art is a celebration
of Pop Art featuring 1960’s and 70’s works drawn mainly from private collections. It includes
sixties drawings by David Hockney never exhibited in the UK before and rarely seen 60’s drawings
by Peter Blake. Together with works by Andy Warhol, Claes Oldenburg, Allen Jones, Colin Self,
Patrick Caulfield and Gilbert & George this is a must see show for fans of modern art. Meanwhile
Bloomsbury brings together original works from the evocative Bloomsbury group, centred on Duncan
Grant and
his friends.

There’s
also a Fringe programme that includes a full day of
family activities at Voewood,to be opened by Sir John
Hurt.
Chair of the Board of Trustees Adney Payne added
“This is the seventh year of the Holt Festival and it’s
exciting to have a new artistic director Charles Pugh.
Charles has put together a wonderful programme that
builds on the successes of the past while introducing
new innovations. I would like to thank him, along
with the committee, supporters and volunteers for
the time and hard work they put into making the Holt
Festival what it is. Also, in particular, thanks must go
to Gresham’s School and the Holt Parish Church for
the support they provide to us.”

Aid Africa - the work in rural Malawi goes on…
by Lynda Mills
Having just returned from more than three months in Africa, it’s refreshing to be surrounded by lush green English vegetation, a generally bugfree environment, regular food, and choices ........
Perhaps a strange concept to pick up on when here in the UK, we’re so often bombarded and confused
by too many options, but our friends in Malawi don’t have the luxury of choice, life is stark, and food
is painfully short. So many are already hungry, especially following the disastrous cyclonic storms that
devastated the area at the beginning of the year. Much of our work this time has been helping those who
suffered loss as housing, toilets, kitchens, crops and livestock were ripped away.
But, working alongside villagers, we were happy to be able to help address some of the difficulties, after
providing initial emergency food and shelter supplies, we’ve built more than 50 toilets, a house, repaired
5 boreholes (bringing safe water back to over 14,000 people), and are in the process of constructing
a road bridge to reconnect outlying remote areas with health and education facilities, 15 villages are
involved, more than 7,500 people will benefit.
Unfortunately, much of the maize harvest was lost, so hunger is going to be a raging issue this year.
We’ve bought in 16 tonnes of maize to distribute later when the
hunger is at its height from Christmas to March 2016. We need to buy
more ....
In an attempt to mitigate this huge loss of staple food resources,
we’ve distributed 40,000 cassava cuttings, seed potatoes and a variety
of vegetable seeds all around the area. Our goat milk programme,
though greatly reduced as does are pregnant, is still nourishing dozens
of vulnerable babies and hundreds of plates of our fortified porridge
are given out each month helping
hungry toddlers and their families.
In the longer term, we’re developing
our moringa tree planting and leaf
processing into a nutrient-rich food
supplement and, as deforestation is
such a pressing problem, we plan to
plant hundreds, then thousands of
trees for fuel, nutrition, soil retention
and enrichment.
On behalf of the thousands of

THE ANIMAL ART
FAIR AND STODY
LODGE GARDENS
RAISE £6,000 FOR ORMISTON FAMILIES!
The Animal Art Fair and Stody Lodge Gardens are delighted to have
raised £6,000 for Ormiston Families, the charity caring for vulnerable
children, young people and families across East Anglia.
Ormiston Families was the nominated charity for the Animal Art
Fair’s Spring Exhibition this May at Stody Lodge’s sensational
rhododendron and azalea gardens near Holt.
Funds were raised at the Private View of the Spring Exhibition on
Saturday 16th May
as well as through the
online auction of a
beautiful sculpture by
Bruce Little.
This delightful sculpture
of a young rhino, entitled
‘The Future’, was sold to
an anonymous bidder for
£1,700.
The funds raised will go
to two of Ormiston Families’ key Norfolk projects:
HMP Norwich - aimed at maintaining positive links between
prisoners and their families, a wide range of services are offered
including children visits; ‘baby-bonding’ sessions; accredited
parenting courses; and ‘Story Book Dads’ scheme, whereby fathers
dictate stories onto CDs for their children to keep.
The Holt Youth Project - Ormiston Families works in partnership
with Holt Youth Project to deliver Young Carer’s Groups, supporting
children and young people who find themselves caring for family
members with illness, disability or drug-dependency, whether shortterm or long-term.

fictional creation, Sherlock Holmes.”
“There is one other thing,” the driver said.
“What is that?”
“Your name is on the front of your suitcase.”
Sir Arthur Conan Doyle was the creator of the world-famous
detective, Sherlock Holmes. Once, he told this story about a time that he
was waiting at a taxi-stand outside the railway station in Paris. When a taxi
pulled up, he put his suitcase in it and got in himself. As he was about to
tell the taxi-driver where he wanted to go, the driver asked him: “Where
can I take you, Mr. Doyle?”
Doyle was flabbergasted. He asked the driver whether he knew him by
sight. The driver said: “No Sir, I have never seen you before.”
The puzzled Doyle asked him what made him think that he was Conan
Doyle. The driver replied: “This morning’s paper had a story about you
being on vacation in Marseilles. This is the taxi stand where people who
return from Marseilles always come to. Your skin colour tells me you have
been on vacation. The ink-spot on your right index finger suggests to me
that you are a writer. Your clothing is very English, and not French. Adding
up all those pieces of information, I deduce that you are Sir Arthur Conan
Doyle.”
Doyle said: “This is truly amazing. You are a real-life counter-part to my

FLOWER CLUB
The Flower Club have been having a very
busy Spring with St. Andrew’s Church Flower
Festival as the highlight. Our own members
were joined by the Church Flower Guild, the
Junior Church and friends from neighbouring
Clubs to make the church look very special
indeed.
Pictured left is Daisy Pearson, one of the
winners of the children’s garden arrangement
competition, receiving her trophy from Fr.
Howard.
Lonely bouquets were once again scattered
about town to mark National Flower
Arranger’s Day on 1st May and the Club was
delighted to receive several little notes from
delighted recipients who found the posies and
either kept them or passed them on to brighten
a friend’s day.
Our Open Meeting with National
Demonstrator David Ryland was a great
success. David was extremely impressed with the quality and quantity (24 entries)
for the Club competition. This time a miniature exhibit, no more than 10cm in
height and width, certainly tested the mettle of our competitors but the results
were amazing.
Next meeting at Holt Community Centre is at 7.00pm for 7.30pm on 15th June
when Darrell Swail from North Walsham will take us to a ‘Vintage
Garden Party’. Member’s Competition is ‘a basket of flowers’.
Visitors £5.00.

HOLT WI
In May Holt WI started their meeting with a ‘Bring and Share’ lunch. There was a wonderful variety of savoury and sweet
offerings and most people went back for second helpings.
Votes of thanks were given to the following people: Gillian Pilgrim and all those who loaned items for the Holt Society Pop up Exhibition - it
was a great success and really showcased all the members’ talents; The Holt Society Bake off team - organised by our WI and especially Glenn
Scott who made the bunting and decorated the lovely boxes for displaying the cakes; and members who were involved in the Holt Flower Club
Flower Festival - Holt Society Week.
Five members and a dog (below) participated in the WI Walk the World at Blickling this month. We made an early start round the Mausoleum
walk managing to escape the rain
and enjoying the bluebells. After the
walk we had excellent coffee and hot
chocolate in the cafe. Over 250 Norfolk
WI members participated in the walk
which promotes the work of ACWW.
Our speaker Gail Bradley gave us a talk
about the work of ACWW (Associated
Country Women of the World) whose
goal is to connect and support women
worldwide.
Coral Batchelor, our WI Advisor
lead the discussion on the 2015 WI
Resolution ‘Failing to care - assessment
of need in long term care’. Members
felt that there was considerable
inequality in how needs are assessed
and lack of understanding as to the
differences in Social Care and Health
Care. However, long term care is
something everyone feels is important
and the resolution was duly voted on
and the results noted. Wendy Richley,
our President, will take these to the
National Annual meeting at the Royal
Albert Hall in June.

BUS AND TRAIN
CONNECTIONS
Dear Caroline,
A colleague of mine in Holt, James Thomson,
and I are keen to see better connections
between buses and trains at Sheringham,
particularly for residents of, and visitors to,
Holt.
Currently there are separate timetables for
buses and trains. To make it easier to use
public transport, and to promote it, James has
compiled a list of convenient buses if using
Bittern Line trains at Sheringham.
A copy of the list is available in the Tourist
Information Offices in Holt and Sheringham
for anyone interested and shows the times
of buses from Holt and the trains that they
connect onto at Sheringham. The list also
shows train arrival times at Sheringham and
the times of onward buses to Holt.
Of course, times and connections cannot be
guaranteed but hopefully this guide will go
some way to raising awareness about making
convenient connections and helping people
avoid long waits for buses or trains.
Details are also given of telephone enquiry
numbers and websites.
Yours sincerely,
David Hurdle
HOLT SOCIETY
50 YEARS ON
Dear Caroline,
Can I, through your magazine, both
congratulate and thank all those involved
with both the Flower Festival in St Andrew’s
Church and those who organised displays in
the Picturecraft Gallery and Church Hall.
As a mere observer, I was most impressed
with it all.
Yours sincerely,

SHAKATAK AT THE AUDEN
THEATRE
Dear Caroline,
I felt I just had to write to you about the most
incredible night out I have had for ages.
I am a particular lover of soul and jazz and
remember fondly the music of the late 70s
and early 80s played by Shakatak. I heard
that they were playing a gig at the Auden
Theatre at Gresham’s School in Holt and
purchased two tickets. I have never been to
this particular establishment and was not sure
of how the evening would pan out.
I have to say that I was astonished at what I
found.
The theatre is professionally managed, and
has a warm and friendly ambience. The
professionalism of the band and the quality
of their music was second to none and the
way that the auditorium had been laid out
to include areas for dancing and a cabaret
style table and chair configuration worked
perfectly. Everyone really enjoyed the
evening which was proven by the immense
standing ovation the group had and by the
number of dancers who invaded the stage to
dance and clap whilst the band undertook an
encore.
I would like to state how professional the
whole production was from the booking
system to the bar, which, unlike most theatres
had enough staff to adequately deliver drinks
both pre, during and post performance.
I would like to extend a particular thank
you to the hard working theatre staff
and organisers of such a successful and
memorable event. I would definitely
be interested in attending other music
performances of this genre and look forward
to hearing about other bands which are
selected to perform.
I think that the residents of Holt and
surrounding areas are very privileged to have
such a venue on their doorstep.
Yours sincerely,
Jayne Milwain
REGARDING FATHER
HOWARD’S CHRISTIAN AID
WEEK
my gift is that of a writer. I minister with my
pen and I hope I will not cease from mental
fight and that my PEN will not sleep in my
hand till we have built Jerusalem not just
in England’s green and pleasant land but
worldwide, till Loko no longer has to trudge
eight weary miles four times a week.
Until that goal is reached not one of us who
dares to call ourselves a Christian can afford
to rest, not until we even begin to resemble
the Master can we draw breath!
Yours sincerely,

SANDERS COACHES
Dear Caroline,
I think that Sanders need competition
to improve their service. When they got
competition from Konect, who took their
service Holway Road into Sheringham,
Sanders then followed this route. Also,
Konect runs from Holt into Norwich and
Sanders has now done the same with the 44
bus, just minutes before the Konect bus.
It looks to me that Sanders is trying hard to
push Konect out but I hope passengers will
patronise Konect who, I feel, have a more
reliable service and more sociable drivers.
For instance, only just recently, the Sanders
9 bus that I was hoping to travel on from
Holt to Fakenham, to connect with Norfolk
Green’s X8 service to Kings Lynn, arrived to
pick up Holt passengers 15 minutes late.
This meant that the X8 would have departed
before my arrival, so I wasn’t able to go and
this is not the first time this has happened.
If Sanders want to keep their customers,
they must seriously look at improving the
reliability of their bus service.
Yours sincerely,
Brian Cottrell
Dear Caroline,
Yes, it is hard to imagine, so hard in fact that
it might do us all the world of good to try
living like Loko, especially, perhaps, during
Christian Aid Week! We might find some
more money, then, to put in the envelope at
the end of that week.

KELLING PROBUS CLUB
Kelling Probus Club held their May lunch meeting at The Dales Hotel,
Upper Sheringham on 21st May. Chairman Michael Bennet welcomed
twenty-four members and a guest to the meeting.
After a delicious meal, the guest speaker was the secretary of the Club
Ken Murray. Ken’s talk was entitled ‘A World of Examination’ and
he explained to the club that he had, for many years, worked as an
administrator for the Cambridge Examination Board. During his work
for the board he had visited 44 countries and spent an average of three
months each year abroad.
Ken traced the history of examination boards from 1857/58 when the
Oxford and Cambridge boards were formed, initially just to facilitate
entry to the universities. The first female applicant was not considered
till 1868, and the first examination certificates not issued till 1918.
The board then became one of the main examiners of secondary
school children with its School Certificate.
The Cambridge Board covered the empire and later a lot of the world
with examination expertise. Many countries still relies on Cambridge
for help, advice and the setting and marking of papers. The board
generates a large income for the university.
Ken ended his talk with statistics which revealed facts about dealing
with countries all over the world, and how ‘rights of appeal’ worked.
He was thanked by members for his talk after several questions were
answered.
The Probus Club meets once a month on the third Thursday of each
month at the Dales Hotel and is open to all retired or semi-retired
business and professional people.
They warmly welcome new members. If you are interested contact
John Whittington on 01263 820333.

HISTORY EVENING AND
KEITH SKIPPER
At 7.00pm on Sunday 14th June, Runton Parish History Society will
be inviting locals and visitors alike to spend an evening with Norfolk’s
very own mardler-in-chief Keith Skipper, who will be holding court at
the Village Hall in East Runton.
Keith, who is well known as a freelance writer and radio broadcaster,
will be regaling the audience with tales and wit of what it means to
him to have been born and brought up in Norfolk. No doubt he will
be giving newcomers to the area a bit of advice on how to ‘speak
proper’. As if that is not
enough, local man Bob
Wright will be bringing his
large collection of postcards
and photographs portraying
the village through the years.
Admission is £4.50 and tea,
coffee and biscuits will be
included.

14th Century Easter Sepulchre and a window and a remarkable painting
both depicting connections with local bird-life and St.Francis of Assisi.
The Church draws a congregation partly from outside the Village from

FROM THE RECTORY:
TIMES OF SERVICES IN THE PARISH
Dear Friends,
It has to be said that we live in a noisy world. Even sitting
quietly in a room on our own we can still be surrounded by
background noise of daily life. Even our churches can be noisy
places. It is very rare, now a days that people enter our churches in
hushed tones and silently prepare for worship. Even our services can
be filled with too many words and have little space for silence in
them. We seemed to have grown accustomed to noise and it is very
difficult to find the sound of silence in the hustle and bustle of daily
life, even in Church!
That is why
together with a group
from the parish I
recently appreciated
the opportunity to
retreat to Ampleforth
Abbey in North
Yorkshire in search of
some time and space
to be silent. Over the
course of four days we
were able to share in
the life of the
Benedictine
monastery in search of that elusive silence in order to be still and to
encounter God. But of course, monasteries, like anywhere else are
busy places and even in the prayerful atmosphere of the monastery
silence, true silence has still to be sought after.
Father Kieran, who led our retreat, spoke to us about the need
to create the right environment in which to be still and silent. A quiet
place in which to be still is important but we also have to create the
right environment within ourselves. He described it as cultivating a
garden of silence, yet like any garden it takes time and effort and
needs to be worked on, only then might we find the silence within
and in that silence encounter God who dwells within each one of us.
Silence, Fr. Kieran said, is not about absence, rather the presence of
God within our hearts. It is an inward journey which takes us deeper
into ourselves in order to meet the living God.
Each day the monks set aside time for silent prayer, though
Fr. Kieran admitted that it was not easy and the pursuit of silence
needed patience and perseverance. He rightly said that one of the
most deafening noises in pursuit of inner silence is the internal noise
of our chattering minds which can be the most deafening noise of
all. Whenever we are still we have to cope with our own fears,
anxieties, worries and concerns, that internal chatter that assaults our
minds. Fr. Kieran encouraged us to learn to let go of such noisy
distractions and to focus on the name of Jesus until there was no
longer any need for words, rather only to rest in silence in the
presence of God.
The pursuit of silence in which to encounter God has long been an
important part of our Christian tradition but one that has been sadly
neglected and even forgotten, yet it is in the sound of silence that we
can encounter God and hear Him speaking to us. The daily pursuit
of silence in which we can encounter God can be life changing and
life transforming. I certainly benefited from the opportunity to seek
that silence in the environment of the monastery and came away
feeling I should make more time for silence amidst the noise of the
busyness of my daily life.
Every blessing,
.
Fr. Howard

FLAGS OUT FOR NORTH NORFOLK
BEACHES AS THEY’RE AWARDED FOR
BEING AMONG BEST IN THE COUNTRY!
Qualified Foot Health Professional
Jennifer Hannant
Visiting Practice
(MCFHP, MAFHP)
Keep Britain Tidy has announced the winners of this year’s
Blue Flag and Seaside Awards and once again, North Norfolk’s
beaches are the place to be.
Flying the flag for North Norfolk’s seaside resorts this year are
Sheringham, Cromer, Mundesley and Sea Palling. All four are
continuing the standard of excellence that was recognised with the
awards of Blue Flag status last year.
North Norfolk District Council is celebrating an extra award this
year; alongside East Runton beach which has been awarded a Seaside
Award for the second year running, Wells-next-the-Sea beach has
won the coveted award for the first time. The Seaside Award is in
recognition of high standards of beach management.
Each award-winning North Norfolk beach has scooped the awards
based on offering visitors great facilities, a litter free and safe
environment and, in the case of the Blue Flag awards, meeting the
highest international water quality requirements.
England can now boast more Blue Flag Award-winning beaches than
Cyprus or Mexico and now ranks in the Top Ten in the world for
beaches that meet the very high standards set for the award.
Both the Blue Flag and Seaside Awards are the quality marks for our
beaches and mean those visiting them
can be sure that they are clean and safe
and meet the highest environmental
standards, as well the tough bathing
water quality standards.
NNDC Leader, Tom FitzPatrick, said:
“We are absolutely delighted that four
of North Norfolk’s Blue Flag resort
beaches have retained their awards this
year and it is fantastic news that Wellsnext-the-Sea has joined East Runton
as a Seaside Award-winning beach for
the first time. We are immensely proud
of our coastal resorts and these awards
are testament to the hard work that
goes on to ensure that North Norfolk
beaches are among the best beaches in
the country and allows us to keep the
Blue Flags flying. Our award-winning
beaches are a wonderful place for both
residents and visitors to enjoy; they put
North Norfolk firmly on the map as a
first-class visitor destination.”
Keep Britain Tidy’s Coastal Award
manager Paul Todd said: “As an
environmental charity, Keep Britain
Tidy is committed to improving the
quality of the places where people live,
work and holiday and these winners
have proved their commitment to
providing the best possible beaches for
locals and visitors alike. The public
can be sure, if they visit a Blue Flag
or Seaside Award winning beach,
that they are visiting one of the best
beaches in the world.
The fact that 140 beaches will be flying
a Blue Flag or Seaside Award this
summer is testament to the hard work
of beach managers up and down the
country. They understand that great
beaches are good for the communities
they serve, good for visitors and,
therefore, good for the economy, as
more visitors means
more money going
into our coastal
resorts.”

the Alaska Department of Fish and Game is advising hikers, hunters,
and fishermen to take extra precautions and keep alert of bears while in
the field.
We advise outdoorsmen to wear noisy little bells on their clothing so as
not to startle bears that aren’t expecting them.
We also advise outdoorsmen to carry pepper spray with them in case of
an encounter with a bear.
It is also a good idea to watch out for fresh signs of bear activity.
Outdoorsmen should recognise the difference between black bear and
grizzly bear manure: Black bear manure is smaller and contains lots
of berries and squirrel fur. Grizzly bear manure has little bells in it and
smells like pepper.

IN SEARCH OF OUR
MILITARY ANCESTORS
HOLISTIC CARE FOR ALL THE FAMILY
Holt Holistic Centre
On 4th May, a Family History Day was held at
Holt Library providing the opportunity for visitors to research their
WW1 military ancestors. This event was part of the Holt Society’s
celebrations for its 50th anniversary and was held in conjunction with
Gresham’s School Archives.
Gresham’s was recently awarded funding of £10,000 from the
Heritage Lottery Fund to help establish a WW1 commemorative
website and further develop their conservation work.
As well as providing an excellent resource for school children,
the website would enable local people to use it for family history
research. Volunteers Val and Vic Taylor were on hand in the morning
to help visitors research military ancestors using online and written
records and the chance to look at their recent research on the local
workhouse. Staff from the Norfolk Record Office and Norfolk
Regimental Museum were available to answer questions and assist
with research and provided an interesting display of WWI archives.
There was a real buzz in the library as those taking their first tentative
steps on the road to finding out the part their relatives played in the
Great War began making connections and discoveries with the help of
the experts.
An informative talk from Victoria Draper of the Norfolk Record
Office introduced those interested in taking their family history

HIGH KELLING GARDEN CLUB
THE HOLT CHRONICLE ~ 01263 712177
On Monday 11th May the garden club met for its last
meeting before the summer break. Colin welcomed visitors
and members and reminded us of the summer outing to
Shorelands Wildlife Gardens and Furze House.
Please note change of date: now Friday 3rd July, meeting at
Avenue Road, High Kelling at 9.00am and a little later at Holt
War Memorial. Any members still wishing to go please contact
either Colin (01263 711718) or Joyce (01263 713971).
Frank Lambert commenced his very interesting talk on Fuchsias. He
became involved after a friend encouraged him to join the Fuchsia
Society following a family tragedy and has since entered and been
very successful in entering and winning Fuchsia shows.
There are 12,000 fuchsias varieties registered, and can be grown in
hanging baskets, tubs and pots or trained around hoops. Cuttings can
be taken all year round, snipping off just below a leaf node. Rooting
www.holtchronicle.co.uk
powder is not required for cuttings. A mixture of 6 measures of multipurpose compost, one measure of grit and vermiculite or perlite and
one handful of seaweed makes a nice open mix in which to grow
them. Omit the grit when growing on cuttings. Always name and date
labels of cuttings. When cuttings have started to grow, nip out top
leaves and pot on. This will encourage bigger plants. Cut back hardy
fuchsias at end of March to soil level.
He finished with a slideshow of his exhibits in shows and around his
garden. Fuchsia plants were available to buy afterwards.
Our next meeting is on Monday 14th September when Len Feller
will give a talk on ‘Japan and its Acers’ , coffee, tea and biscuits will
be available from 7.00pm and the meeting commences at 7.30pm.
For more information please contact Joyce on 01263 713971.

FUNNY FACTS! (Believe it or not!)
Some dogs can predict when a child will have an epileptic seizure,
and even protect the child from injury. They’re not trained to do this,
they simply learn to respond after observing at least one attack.

On average, 40% of all hotel rooms in the United States remain empty
every night.
When you hear a bullwhip snap, it’s because the tip is traveling faster

The largest ocean liners pay a $250,000 toll for each trip through the

THE SECRETS OF THE HOLY GRAIL
BLOTTING OUT THE TWO CHRISTS
In the beginning God had two Christs, they were symbolised by the
two olive trees in the book of Zechariah chapter four. They were the
Star and Sceptre of the book of numbers chapter twenty four verse
seventeen. They represent the two parts of the Church, the priests
and the laity. In the new testament the two Christs are blotted out
because the two Christs have been replaced by the fictitious Jesus
whom Christians incorrectly claim to be the Christ (anointed one).
In the book of revelation it is said that the two olive trees of
Zechariah are witnesses (11:3-4), they can no longer be called
Christs as the Christian Church wished to promote Jesus their
fictitious Christ. The two Christs (Priests and laity) are also called
witnesses in the Dead Sea Scroll, The Community Rule (IQS
column VI11) where it is written, “They shall be witnesses to the
truth at the judgement, and shall be the elect of goodwill who shall
atone for the land.” See John 18:37.

Books. Translated by Geza Vermes. For more secrets see our book

OSTEOPATHY
To qualify, an osteopath must study for four to five years in order to
gain a masters-level degree in osteopathy (M.Ost). This is similar
to a medical degree, but with greater emphasis on musculoskeletal
medicine. The degree includes more than 1,000 hours of clinical
experience.
Osteopathy is a statutorily regulated primary healthcare profession,
which has been practised since the 1870s. Osteopaths are increasingly
working within the NHS. The British Medical Association’s guidance
for general practitioners (GPs) states that doctors can safely refer
patients to osteopaths.
Those practising in the UK carry out more than seven million
consultations every year with around 30,000 people currently
consulting osteopaths every working day. Today, osteopathy is
practised in over 80 countries.
Osteopathy is a safe and effective means of diagnosis, treatment,
prevention and rehabilitation of a wide range of musculoskeletal
disorders (MSDs). Commonly treated complaints include: back ache,
neck strains and whiplash, migraines and headaches, changes to
posture in pregnancy and pre-menstrual symptoms, sports injuries,
digestive problems/IBS, jaw and facial pain, repetitive strain injury
(RSI), ‘frozen’ shoulder, rheumatic and arthritic symptoms, respiratory
problems, ‘trapped’ nerve and muscle spasm.
Osteopaths’ patients include the young, older people, manual workers,
office professionals, pregnant women, children and sports people. A
consultation with an osteopath includes a thorough case history and
physical examination: assessing muscles and joints and observing
movements. Orthopaedic tests and diagnostic clinical procedures,
are also used to inform the diagnosis and to assess whether referral
for further medical investigation is necessary. Treatment is based
on manual mobilising and manipulative procedures and massagetype techniques, tailored to the individual patient and reinforced by
guidance on diet, lifestyle and exercise. It is not just about backs!

NEWS FROM HOLT COMMUNITY CENTRE
CHAIRMAN’S CHAT: The audience that came to The Pirates of
Penzance was asked to complete an exit questionnaire. ‘Better than being in
the theatre’ was one comment. Others included: ‘being close to home’ and
‘convenient parking’ among reasons why they will repeat the experience for
Carmen on 1st July. Needless to say, everyone was delighted by the picture
and sound quality, as well as the fun of the operetta. Why drive all that way
out of town to other venues, adding to your time, carbon footprint and cost
(most seats elsewhere are more expensive), when you’ve got such a great
facility on your doorstep?
Sure, nothing’s perfect. We’re addressing the question of seating. And it
won’t just be the cinema and live transmission audiences who will benefit.
The Friday Club, the 1960’s group and Rotary, to name but a few, should all
have their experience at the Centre enhanced. Fear not: you desire greater
comfort in the chairs you sit on and we’re right behind you.
P.S. Get your tickets early for Carmen - the response to the questionnaire
from Pirates suggests it’s going to be a full house. We don’t want to turn
anyone away on the night.

HOLT COMMUNITY CENTRE CINEMA
Our two most recent films did not do as well as expected. By the
time this is in print we will have shown ‘The Theory of Everything’
about Stephen Hawking, which I am hoping will have attracted a larger
following.
We have a change of programme for CINEMA EXTRA, because one DVD
will not be available in time. On Wednesday 10th June, we will be showing
‘Boyhood’ starring Ethan Hawke and Patricia Arquette, a story of American
life filmed over 12 years. You see the young children grow up before your
eyes. This is on at 7.30pm only. There is a bar, and tickets are £5.00
For our CINEMA presentation on Wednesday 24th June, we will show ‘The
100 foot Journey’, starring Helen Mirren as a French restaurant owner who
is worried when an Indian restaurant opens 100 feet away. This is on at
2.30pm and 7.30pm, with refreshments in the afternoon and a bar in the
evening. Tickets are £5.00. Both films are worth seeing for very different
reasons.

Rebecca Lawrence, a local Kelling girl and former pupil of Gresham’s
School, will be travelling to El Salvador this July to work on a
development programme for ten weeks. There she will team up with
volunteers from the Santa Marta community to help with projects run
by Progressio ICS.
Rebecca explained, “El
Salvador is a country
paralysed by gang violence,
gender inequality, and
environmental issues.
Progressio attempts to help
in a small way by integrating
into rural communities and
linking up with young people
in particular. Their projects
in the past have included
educating about waste and
recycling, sexual-awareness
workshops and building local
infrastructure.”
Rebecca, who is now at
Cambridge University reading
history, is holding a concert
in aid of the cause next
month. “I’ve been extremely lucky in that the Kings College London a
cappella group, All The King’s Men, have agreed to perform. It should
be a fantastic event which will also allow me to draw attention to the
difficult situation in El Salvador. The money raised will go towards
supporting the Progressio ICS projects out there so fingers crossed we
can get a good audience!”

TAXI & TRAVEL
Summer in a cup
Smell and taste are so evocative, capable of wafting us back at the
merest hint of a whiff.
Last summer, I made copious quantities of Elderflower cordial,
and managed to ration it out so that it lasted around 10 months, and
what a treat it was on Christmas Day to be supping a delicious, fresh
cordial, so reminiscent of warmer days.
This is so ridiculously easy to make too, and very economical. There
is no exact science with cordials, just make sure you sterilise your
bottles well if you are keeping it, by washing really thoroughly in
warm soapy water, rinsing well and popping into a coolish oven
(around 100°) for about 15 minutes, or the time it takes to make your
cordial on the second day.
The taste of fresh, home made cordials is so much tastier than shop
bought, and there are so many uses for it. The elderflower trees are
about to burst forth into flower any day now, so keep a look out,
grab a basket and start collecting. It grows like a weed in the wild, so
you’ll have no problem finding it. And don’t forget to raise your glass
on Christmas Day, and toast summer!

Trustees Wanted
Have you ever thought about becoming a trustee to give something
back to the community and area you live in?
It doesn’t have to be as time consuming as you might first think but
if you can spare at least half a day a month you could make a real
difference to a substantial amount of local people. If this sounds like
something you’re interested in then Age Concern in North Norfolk
would love to hear from you.
Becoming a trustee should be a rewarding and enjoyable experience.
Our charity’s mission is ‘To promote the well-being of all older people
and help make later life a fulfilling and enjoyable experience’,
If this is something that is equally important to yourself, or maybe
your life has been touched by the work of our organisation, then
please consider becoming
a trustee. Age Concern in
North Norfolk provides
a day centre and lunch
club, a befriending
service, a pop-in coffee
morning and a variety of
activities.
The 4-day per week day
centre offers personal
care, laundry services,
lunches and entertainment. The befriending service, funded by
the Big Lottery, matches volunteers with isolated people who they
visit at home thereby helping to relieve isolation and loneliness in
our community. We have clubs across Cromer, Sheringham, and
soon to be North Walsham, which provide companionship and
activities for older people and an opportunity to get out and about.
We often arrange outings and events as well as promoting regular
intergenerational activities, fundraising and partner charity work.
You can find information about the role of charity trustees at https://
www.gov.uk/government/organisations/charity-commission. You are
more than welcome to come along to our AGM on the 18th June at
1.00pm at our daycentre in Sheringham to get a better feel for our
charity and what we are striving to achieve.
For more information, or to apply, please contact Margaret Drury,
Trustee and Minutes Secretary, via our office on 01263 823126 or by
email [email protected].

Elderflower Cordial
30 heads of elderflower, roughly stripped off the thicker stalks
Approx. 2 litres water
1.4kg sugar
Grated zest of 2 lemons
Grated zest of 2 oranges
Juice of 6 lemons
1 tsp citric acid per litre of liquid
Try to collect your flowers on a hot
sunny day - it is meant to increase the
flavour. Give your flower heads a good shake to get rid of any bugs,
and place them in a large pan with the zests and cover them with the
water. (If they are not covered, add some more; exact quantities are
not essential). Leave overnight. Next day give a good stir, and pour
the liquid out through a jelly bag or muslin, squeezing the flowers.
Clean pan, and return the liquid to it, adding the sugar and lemon
juice. Heat gently to allow sugar to dissolve, then turn up heat and
simmer for approx 15 mins, skimming off any scum and stirring
occasionally, adding the citric acid in the last five minutes with a
good stir. Leave to cool, and strain through jelly bag again. Sterilise
some glass bottles and decant cordial into them using a funnel. Top
and keep in a cool, dark place, and your cordial should last several
months (unless you glug through it - highly likely!) Carolyn Burn

SHERINGHAM AND CROMER
CHORAL SOCIETY
Sheringham and Cromer Choral Society are going all American this
July with two exciting events in north Norfolk. On Saturday 4th July,
Independence Day, they have a Garden Party at Mannington Hall by
kind invitation of Lord
and Lady Walpole.
The grounds will be
open from 2.00pm
to 5.00pm for you to
enjoy the beautiful
surroundings of
Mannington Gardens.
Tea and cake will be
provided. There will be
music throughout the
afternoon. The choir
will sing on two occasions and there will be incidental piano music from
Geoff Cummings-Knight all with an Americana flavour as befits the day.
Almost certainly the choir will provide one or two ‘tasters’ to come
from their Summer Americana Gala concert at the Auden Theatre the
following weekend, Sunday 12th July at 6.30pm. This concert will
provide a sumptuous tour of 20th Century American music ranging from
Negro Spirituals from Michael Tippet’s A Child of our Time to Samuel
Barber’s Agnus Dei (choral version of his famous Adagio) and lots of
lovely George Gershwin songs including excerpts from Porgy and Bess
and popular standards such as I got rhythm and Someone to Watch over
me. And the orchestra will play the Largo from Dvorak’s New World
Symphony. It has become something of a tradition for SCCS summer
gala concerts
to include
an extended
interval so that
performers
and audience
can enjoy a
picnic on the
lawns outside
the theatre.

GLAVEN EELS NEED YOUR HELP
After decades of decline, young eels are once more making an appearance in British rivers, including the River Glaven (below). Their now
well-documented migration from the Sargasso Sea to European rivers, and back again to breed, may actually be the least of their problems.
Their failure to get up rivers, past sluices and other barriers, is now thought to be a major reason for their virtual disappearance.
How can you help? This is not a plea for money; the Heritage Lottery fund has already provided £110,000 for a pilot scheme to encourage
the return of eels to the River Glaven, managed by
the Norfolk Rivers Trust. Some of this will be used to
bypass physical barriers but an important part is the
gathering of available information and engagement
with local communities.
We want to hear from anyone with equipment for
catching eels, photographs of past annual eel run
events on the coast, or eels surmounting some type of
barrier.
Old photos of the Glaven, eel anecdotes and records of
eels in ponds and ditches in the Glaven catchment are
also welcome.
It is hoped that some of this material will be displayed
at a public talk on the Glaven Eel Project at 3.00pm
Saturday 13th June in Cley Village Hall (immediately
after the River Glaven Conservation Group AGM). All
are welcome to hear more about the project.
Please pass any information to Ian Shepherd,
Secretary to the River Glaven Conservation Group.

Yes, it’s that time again, and we, the committee, are in the early
stages of organising this year’s Horticultural Show, which will be
on Saturday 5th September at Weybourne Village Hall. The early
September date was the only available date, as all of August was
booked with several community events in the village. A busy August
in Weybourne!
The later date, which last year, produced a very enjoyable show,
should again provide you with an opportunity to display the results of
your dedication and hard work. Again there seven categories ranging
from fruit and vegetables and flowers, home produce, handicraft and
a children’s competition. Show brochures, with all the details, will be
available soon, watch this space.
The show is organised and run by dedicated volunteers, as a non-profit
making organisation with any money left, after all expenses have been
met, donated to a chosen charity.
So please come and support us again!

A SIGN FOR THE TIMES IN AYLSHAM
Just in time for the Spring Bank Holiday, Aylsham
Community Partnership unveiled a striking new sign
directing visitors to the town’s Heritage Centre.
The sign, made in oak by John Leaf of Matlaske
woodcarvers, was designed to fit and blend with the existing
church sign and Aylsham Parish Church vicar Revd Andrew
Beane was on hand for the unveiling on Wednesday 13th
May.
The sign was constructed from oak donated by Aylsham
residents Maureen and Richard Burr while Broadland
District Council made funds available to cover the cost of
carving.
Commenting on the sign, Aylsham Community Partnership
chairman Giles Margarson said, “The Heritage Centre
is a lovely building, sitting in the churchyard. It is a great
resourced for the town as well as an attraction for visitors.
With the new sign, we believe visitor numbers will increase,
allowing more people to enjoy what the Centre has to offer.”
You can find out more about Aylsham Heritage Centre,
including opening times, at www.aylshamheritage.com.

CHESS CHALLENGE SUCCESS FOR
NORFOLK SCHOOLBOY
A FOOTBALL QUIZ TO TEST YOUR
KNOWLEDGE OF ‘THE BEAUTIFUL GAME’
An eight year old pupil, who has been competing in
Chess Tournaments since he was five, has just become Supremo
Chess Champion in the U8 division of the Delancey UK Schools’
Chess Challenge 2015 Megafinal XVII
in Norfolk.
Oscar Ellis, from Oulton, who attends
Gresham’s Pre-Prep in Holt, will now
qualify for the Northern Gigafinal
which takes place in Manchester
in July. Oscar, who is a member of
Norwich Junior Chess Club, was very
pleased with his achievement saying,
“The trophy is bigger and shinier this
year!”
This was the third time Oscar
participated in this competition which
is now in its 20th year. In 2012, when
he was five, he came second in the U7
section. In 2014, he was the Supremo
in the U7 category and went on to compete in the Gigafinal, where
he came 5th out of 42 competitors, reaching the last 2000 out of an
original entry of 55,000 players! This year, he took first place in the
U8 event winning a trophy and a rosette having scored five out of a
maximum of six points.
The UK Chess Challenge began in 1996 with 700 schools entering,
involving about 23,000 children. The numbers have continued to grow
with now more than 2,000 schools currently taking part. Seven rounds
are played; during which time children win badges, spots, mascots
and other prizes.
All ages can take part with the qualifiers for the Megafinals being the
top scorers in the tournament across each age group from U7 to U18.
The best players can then go through to the area Megafinal and, if
successful, on to the North/South Gigafinal and National Terafinal.

SORRELL HITS HIS MARK
Gresham’s School in Holt, is delighted to welcome back Australian, Mark Sorell following a very successful season as professional cricket coach
at the school last summer. Mark will run a cricket programme for the U9s at Gresham’s Prep through to the Senior 1st XI, working with Chris
Brown (Norfolk Captain and Head Coach of Norfolk County Cricket Club).
Mark said, “I really enjoyed my time at Gresham’s last year
and I’m very excited about the growth and development of
the cricket programme as Gresham’s works towards becoming
the strongest and most respected cricket school in the UK. We
strive to make sure that everyone involved gets prepared for
and plays their ‘Test Match’ and, most importantly, develops
a love of this great game that will extend beyond their school
days.”
His curriculum vitae is very impressive:
• Australia A Head Coach - Pakistan tour (2009)
• Australia Ladies Head Coach (2005 - 2007)
• Australia Assistant Coach - England (2010)
• South Australia ‘The Redbacks’ Head Coach (2008 - 2011)
Steve Adams, Sports Development Director said, “We are
investing heavily in our cricket programme and we are very
fortunate to also have on board Steve Goldsmith (Winter 1st
XI training), Alan Ponder (Prep and Senior School Coach)
and Fred Handley (Under 15s Coach) who are very well
known on the Norfolk cricket circuit.
Our aim is to provide all players with the skills, structure and
opportunity to become better players and for some to play
Left to right: Jack Park (London), Will Wright (Oulton), Tom Hancock (King’s Lynn),
Chris Brown, Chris Woodhouse (Holt), Mark Sorell, Tom Sheridan (Sheringham),
first-class cricket as a career.
Edward Makanza (Zimbabwe), Tom Perry-Warnes (Norwich),
I do not believe there is a better coaching team in the East of
Tatenda Chiradza (Zimbabwe) and Michael Skerritt (Hunstanton).
England!”
THE HOLT CHRONICLE ~ 01263 712177
As I said before, I never repeat myself.
HOLT CC vs CASTLE ACRE CC
Holt CC 193-4 (45 overs) Hospital CC 106 (35.4 overs) Holt CC won by 87 runs
Ten man Holt CC recorded their first win of the season with a comfortable 87 run win Kings Lynn Hospital CC. After winning the
toss and opting to bat first, Holt posted 193-4 from their 45 overs. Chapman and Spillett got themselves back into form with a brisk
opening stand worth 71 runs, before Chapman (44) was bowled. Thaxter joined Spillett in the middle and they shared a 100 run
partnership before Thaxter (28) was bowled by Khan, who then dismissed Spillett (64) who was caught by a diving one handed catch at square
leg. Holt reached 193 for 4 from their allocated overs.
Hospital got off to a slow start with good bowling from Thaxter and Mark Scase. With 15 runs on the board, Thaxter got the breakthrough and
followed this with two more wickets to finish on 3 for 16. With further wickets from Greeves (1-31) and Mark Scase (3-14) and a fine run out
from Greeves Hospital were dismissed for 106 leaving Holt with a comfortable win.
HOLT CC vs NARBOROUGH CC 2nd XI
Holt CC 115 all out Narborough CC 2nd XI 116-7 Narborough CC 2nd XI won by 3 wickets
Holt CC endured a disappointing 3 wicket defeat in their latest league encounter away at Narborough CC 2nd XI. Batting first, Holt were bowled
out for 115. After losing Spillett early on, Chapman (46) and Thaxter (16) put on a 68 run partnership and got Holt into a comfortable position
before both fell in quick succession to leg-spinner J Crisp. That sparked a huge collapse for Holt which saw Mark Scase, Baker (4), Collyer,
Edge, Tonge and Chaney all fall in quick succession which reduced Holt to 86-9. Greeves, who came in at 6, was joined by Holmes at 11. Both
batsmen showed resistance and formed a 29 run partnership before Holmes (16) was lbw, leaving Greeves stranded on 20 not out.
After a reasonable start Narborough were reduced to 62-4 with Thaxter (3-14) and Holmes (3-33) getting the wickets. Greeves (1-28) chipped in
with a wicket but Holt were unable to stop Narborough overtaking them with three wickets in hand.
Holt’s batting collapse cost them the game.

PARAMOTOR GLIDERS WARNED TO STAY
AWAY FROM WELLS QUAYSIDE
JEWELLERS
Paramotor gliders are being urged to stop flying over Wells Quay - or
they could face police prosecution.
The warning comes as two such gliders were spotted in the air over
the Wells Harbour Office at around 7.00pm on Wednesday 27th May.
PC Jason Pegden, a Wildlife Crime Officer, for Norfolk Constabulary,
said: “Paramotor gliders are not permitted in this area of Wells as they
cause a disturbance to the sea birds nesting in the area as happened on
this occasion.
The gliders came from the north direction and flew over the harbour
and boats, scaring the nesting birds and we would urge them to stop
such activity.”
The gliders committed the offence of ‘disturbance to a schedule 1
protected specie’ under the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981.
Officers are keen to speak to anyone who believes they may know the
identity of the gliders. Anyone with information is asked to contact
PC Jason Pegden at Norfolk Constabulary on 101 or Crimestoppers
anonymously on 0800 555 111.
For more information visit the Wells Harbour website at:

A health care assistant, a mechanical engineer and a secretary are three
of the latest recruits set to don police uniforms after joining the ranks
of Norfolk’s Special Constabulary. Some 10 new special constables
will be patrolling the county following an official attestation
ceremony at Norfolk Constabulary’s Wymondham headquarters. And
before stepping out in their neighbourhoods the Specials were all
congratulated by Superintendent Roger Wiltshire who attended the
event on Sunday 24th May.
“Special officers play a very valuable role in supporting the work of
Norfolk Constabulary and the service we provide to local people,”
Supt Wiltshire said. “It was an honour to attend such an event and
meet the new recruits who we are delighted to welcome on board.
The commitment and energy shown by Norfolk’s Specials is truly
admirable and they make a significant contribution to the continuing
safety of our communities.”
During the ceremony the group all individually read the Oath Of
Allegiance to local Magistrate Dick Meadows.
Specials Manager, Sue Goode, said: “Being a Special is a very
rewarding, fulfilling and interesting role where no two duties are the
same. Norfolk is always on the look-out for committed individuals
who are keen to experience the world of policing while supporting
their local community.”
The Specials have all taken part in an intensive training course
which saw them studying various aspects of policing including crime
scene and road traffic management, statement taking and diversity
and human rights issues. The new recruits bring the total number of
Specials in the county to 267.
Norfolk continues to be on the look-out for committed individuals
who are keen to experience the world of policing while supporting
their local community.
The Special Constabulary is a voluntary body to help the regular
police force in meeting the policing needs of the community. Their
roles include providing highly visibility patrols and helping police
major incidents and events. Special Constables provide a vital link in
the partnership between the police service and the public.
A recruitment evening is being held on Tuesday 16th June between
7.15pm and 9.00pm at the Operations and Communication Centre
(OCC) in Falconers Chase, Wymondham, NR18 OWW.
Attendees will be given information on the recruitment process,
the roles of a Special Constable and have the opportunity to meet a
number of those already out on the beat.
Anyone interested in attending the event should contact Jon MorganJones on 01953 425699 ext 2371 or email morgan-jonesj@norfolk.

THAT’S LIFE! More true life experiences
As we sat talking at the table after a family meal, my
grandson came downstairs and stood next to his very macho father.
His dad sniffed and said, “Have you been putting on your mum’s
perfume? You smell like a big girl’s blouse. The kids would chase
you out of the school playground for being a sissy. Men don’t
smell like that, only wimps. Fancy a bloke smelling like that.”
“Dad,” said Jonathan. “It’s your aftershave.”
The minute I walked into the post office, the postmaster noticed the
beautiful diamond earrings my husband had just given me.
“Those must be real,” she said.
“Yes, they are.” I was thrilled she’d noticed. “How could you
tell?” “Because,” she said, “no one buys fake diamonds that
small.”
Working as a probation officer, I attended the trial of a serial
offender who’d appeared at the Magistrate’s Court many times
before. At the start of the hearing, the usher approached him and
asked, “Darren, have you got a solicitor?”
“Not this time,” he replied. “I’m telling the truth today!”
Bald singers don’t fare well in the nightclub business - hence my
purchase of a wig. When I asked my accountant if I could write it
off as an expense, he hesitated, then changed his mind.
“All right,” he said. “I’ll put it down as an overhead.”

‘NORFOLK MEDAL RESCUES’
From Friday 12th June, The Gallery, Picturecraft, Lees Yard in Holt
will be showcasing a collection of artwork by maritime artist, Mick
Bensley; a collection dedicated to Norfolk’s Lifeboat crews. The
exhibition will run for two weeks and display artworks depicting real
life rescues recorded in 1941. To show appreciation for our lifeboat
crews of today, we will be collecting donations for Mick’s chosen
charity, the RNLI.
In addition, there
will be a free prize
draw where two of
Mick’s artworks
(one original pencil
drawing and a
limited edition
print) will be
available to win.
Mick Bensley
was born in
Sheringham
and grew up by the North Sea. He attended Norwich school of Art
and Design and later worked in London for 15 years as a graphic
designer. In the late sixties after reading Cyril Jolly’s book ‘Henry
Blogg of Cromer’, Mick produced his first watercolour paintings of
maritime rescues. The tales of lifeboat men, risking their own lives
to save those in peril, are what moved Mick to paint this subject. He
has since gained an international reputation as a marine artist, with
paintings in private collections around the world. All paintings will be
available to purchase using the Own Art Scheme, paying interest free
instalments over 10 months. The opening is on Friday 12th June from
7.00pm - 9.00pm, where guests will be greeted with a wine reception.
The exhibition will continue until Wednesday 24th June, Monday Saturday, 9.00am - 5.00pm and Thursday, 9.00am - 1.00pm.
