Our annual fund exceeded an aggressive goal, we supported two merit scholars, our gala and auction were both great fun and very successful, and on top of all of that, we were able to underwrite an exciting capital renovation project. The annual fund is important to the health of the school as it raises money which directly supplements tuition to support basic programs, from books and equipment to faculty development and enrichment materials. I want to thank all the class representatives, especially AF chair, Antonia Kannengiesser ’94, for their dedication to this important cause. Speaking of thanks, I don’t think we can ever thank Eliza Thorne ’91 and Debbie Domber enough for the effort that they put into making our gala a truly memorable event. The monies raised by the auction, combined with significant donations generated by Jackie Montfort and our development committee, made our plans for a music and performing arts center and enlarged lower school classrooms a reality. At graduation every year, I am reminded of how Dutchess Day transforms lives. Seeing the students’ poise and confidence, and hearing about the accomplishments of our graduates always leaves me deeply impressed. Our faculty, facilities, and programs provide our students with a rich educational experience that gives them all of the tools that they need to succeed. The depth of this experience is dependent each year on our ability to reach our fundraising goals. I want to thank all of you who supported Dutchess Day with your time and money. Because of your generosity, our facilities and programs just get better and better. Sincerely, Nancy Hathaway Head of School WWW.DUTCHESSDAY.ORG ■ DDS ANNUAL REPORT 2016 3 DUTCHESS DAY SCHOOL MISSION Dutchess Day School is an elementary and middle school that provides a strong academic foundation, values children’s natural curiosity, and fosters an enduring enthusiasm for learning. In an atmosphere of trust and mutual respect, students are encouraged to take intellectual, athletic, and artistic risks and to develop independence, confidence, and imagination. A talented and dedicated faculty maintains high standards within a balanced curriculum that challenges students to discover their unique strengths. The school seeks diversity and respects the individuality of each child. Students share their talents through collaboration and through service to the school, the community, and the larger world. 2016 ANNUAL FUND CHAIR: ANTONIA KANNENGIESSER Dear Parents, Alumni, & Friends, I am beyond thrilled that we were able to not only meet, but also exceed this year’s annual fund goal of $260,000.00. To be honest I was a bit nervous heading into the year because this goal was quite ambitious and we also had a capital campaign and gala on the calendar. I couldn’t be happier or more proud to be part of a community that rose to the challenge without hesitation. Each and every one of you who donated to this year’s annual fund has proven that you not only believe in what Dutchess Day stands for but also that you believe in our children and providing them with the absolute best education. That includes helping teachers continue their educations and keep their passion ignited for what they do. There are many things people wouldn’t necessarily think about when considering how the annual fund is allocated. The annual fund makes so much possible, such as field trips, school projects, books and technology, building maintenance, and financial aid. It is wonderful to see the list of people who generously donate to the annual fund grow over the years. That alums, parents, grandparents, and friends from far and wide donate is really humbling and very special. I hope everyone who gave this year realizes that they are playing an active role in the outstanding education Dutchess Day offers all its students. I especially want to thank all of the annual fund parent and alumni representatives who worked tirelessly to write letters and emails and make phone calls. We would not have reached our goal without your help. To all the donors who find themselves in this report—thank you for supporting this incredible DDS community. RIGHT: New stage almost completed, July 2016. What Happened at Dutchess This Summer? Anyone who dropped by the school this summer had an eye-popping moment when they realized that some very major changes were underway. Construction in three areas of the school were all part of the largest capital project of the last decade, completed by the opening of school in September of 2016. First and foremost: major change… The lower school gymnasium, built in 1975, has been transformed into a multi-purpose building to provide much needed space for the music and theater departments, including a stage and auditorium with seating capacity of around 400, two new music rooms, and three practice rooms. The building will continue to be used as a gymnasium for pre-K through 2nd grades. The façade of the building received a facelift while the barn motif was preserved. Dutchess Day School has always had a superb music and performing arts program and over the past two decades it has grown exponentially. A successful instrumental program, three choruses, four instrumental ensembles, and a busy music and theater program now have a newly configured space into which they have moved. 1 6 DDS ANNUAL REPORT 201 6 ■ WWW.DUTCHESSDAY.ORG And then… With the move of the music and theater departments, additional renovations were made to the main school building. The reallocation of space allowed for incremental enlargements to lower school classrooms. Fourth grade has moved around the corner into what has been the library for 20 some years. Second and third acquired growing room too, and a break-out room for small lower school instructional groups was added. 2 Last but not least… With the above-mentioned changes to lower school and the move of the music and theater departments out of the main school building, the library is relocated in the former music space (plus much of the area where the stage was), and the dining room has more elbow room—meaning it will more comfortably fit our growing student body. Architect and DDS parent Chris Colby, representing the firm Clark Patterson Lee, produced the designs for the changes in both buildings. Construction work began in March and is being done by Mid Hudson Construction Management, which was responsible for the excellent renovation of the science wing back in 2014. 3 WWW.DUTCHESSDAY.ORG ■ DDS ANNUAL REPORT 2016 7 FUNDRAISING UPDATE FUNDRAISING UPDATE Third graders Nolan Morton and Sutter Schwartz explore the Little Bits technology. Faculty STEM Grant Amanda Ruhe, science and technology teacher, received a grant from the Community Foundation of Dutchess County aimed at supporting the school’s STEM program. STEM, which stands for science, technology, engineering, and math, is a program that integrates science and computer classes in our 4th and 5th grades. Part of the curriculum involves learning about computers and their components as well as basic programming. Mrs. Ruhe used the grant funds to purchase Little Bits kits—which include color-coded pieces that snap together with magnets to make over 5 million simple and complex circuit combinations. Using the Little Bits, students will build upon their prior knowledge of basic electrical circuits and basic programming, taking it to the next level. This reusable equipment is to be housed in the Tinker Lab space, allowing multiple students at all grade levels to make use of it during the school day for many different projects. Hands-on learning for the next generation of engineers! 8 DDS ANNUAL REPORT 201 6 ■ WWW.DUTCHESSDAY.ORG Sixth graders enjoy field day: Emma Stalteri, Minali AbrahamAggarwal, Sofie Morton. Expanding Horizons—the Merit Scholarship The merit scholarship program, initiated in 2012, attracts students who are avid learners, able to take full advantage of an educational environment that “fosters an enthusiasm for learning” and “values curiosity.” This past June, our second merit scholar graduate left Dutchess Day, and our third merit scholar begins 7th grade this fall. These students have contributed to and benefited from the “atmosphere of trust and mutual respect” in which “students are encouraged to take intellectual, athletic, and artistic risks and to develop independence, confidence, and imagination.” At the time of printing, the scholarship is made possible by: ● ● ● ● ● Craig and Gloria Callen Farnham and Anne Collins Everett and Helen Cook Willem and Marion De Vogel Kirk Henckels and Fernanda Kellogg ● ● ● ● Doug and Sarah Luke Patrina Foundation Donald and Barbara Tober Andrea Walton WWW.DUTCHESSDAY.ORG ■ DDS ANNUAL REPORT 2016 9 FUNDRAISING UPDATE The sheep barn at Thorndale completely transformed into a glittering party venue. The Gala: 60th Celebrated in Style Three hundred and eighty guests filled up the sheep barn on the Thorndale estate in Millbrook, NY on April 30, 2016 to celebrate the school’s first sixty years. Countless parent volunteers worked for a year in the planning of the event. They acquired over 160 items to be auctioned off in both silent and live auctions and transformed the barn into a magical, twinkling event space. The evening was a joyful success, with guests from every part of the school’s history in attendance, from a former head of school, several former board presidents, alumni, past teachers and parents, current parents, teachers, and administrators, grandparents, as well as community friends and supporters of the school. Gala chairs were current parents Deborah Domber and Eliza Thorne who is also a DDS 1991 alumna. 10 DDS ANNUAL REPORT 201 6 ■ WWW.DUTCHESSDAY.ORG The many items that raised bids from the guests included a week at a clifftop getaway in Sydney, Australia, a week bone-fishing in the Bahamas, a trip to Budapest, a chance to bear witness to a live open-heart surgery, a brand new golf cart, a helicopter ride to New York City, box seats at Yankee Stadium, a hot air balloon ride, flying lessons, polo lessons, and dance lessons, as well as gorgeous jewelry and other luxury items, experiences for children and teens, art work, gift certificates for music, dining, healthy living, and so much more. The gala raised $260,520.00 and much of its proceeds will be used toward the capital project. (See article on page 6.) At the gala, attendees were able to “click for a brick” using their bidding app. Post-gala, brick purchases continue. The building opened with many personalized bricks in place, and more will be added over time. Bricks with the names of students, alums, parents, former and current faculty and staff, grandparents and many more will forever commemorate the names and sentiments engraved. It’s not too late! Bricks can be added to the walkway. Feel free to purchase one or more bricks by using this online link https: //www.netdirectories.com /~dds /olg1.cgi. A form will be emailed to you for your personalization. 12 DDS ANNUAL REPORT 201 6 ■ WWW.DUTCHESSDAY.ORG WWW.DUTCHESSDAY.ORG ■ DDS ANNUAL REPORT 2016 13 WHY I GIVE… Dutchess Day is a very special place. Its culture unassumingly blends a reassuring extension and integration of home and family, high academic standards, genuine curiosity and wonder in learning, skill and empowerment in creating, performing and competing, openness, honesty and compassion in personal relationships with complete engagement and high spirits. We are very grateful to have had it as a chapter in our lives and want to do what little we can to ensure that it continues to thrive. — JOHN ALLEN, trustee and past parent, and CHRISTINA WAGNER, past parent Why I give is really the value of the school and what it gives back. I don’t give for my children; I give for ALL the children. I realize that tuition does not pay for everything, and being chair of the annual fund for so long I am very conscious of what it costs to run a school — JACKIE MONTFORT parent, past parent, trustee We give to DDS because we believe the school sets up all students for a “lifetime of learning.” We have seen firsthand from our three children that the style of learning instilled at DDS can and is used by the students throughout their educational lives, and even beyond. This is all enabled by the talented and dedicated staff at DDS, all of whom truly appear to get joy from seeing their students learn and grow into young adults. — HARSHAN and LINDA BHANGDIA, past parents As a parent and past parent, it is clear to me why I contribute to the annual fund. My children thrived in a positive, nurturing environment, created by exceptional teachers. When your children are eager to come to school each morning and excited about the many wonderful things they do throughout the day, it feels good. When they feel safe, successful, and appreciated for their individuality, you know they are in the right place. As a teacher, I am fortunate to be able to give to a school that gives back to me. During a time when so many educators are stressing over state standards and endless testing, I go to work each day not just able, but encouraged to creatively implement exciting ideas. DDS teachers have access to ample materials and educational resources, and are able to maintain happiness in a job that for so many at other schools is becoming robotic and non-fulfilling. — TRACEY TIMSON, parent, past parent, teacher 14 DDS ANNUAL REPORT 201 6 ■ WWW.DUTCHESSDAY.ORG We contribute to the annual fund because we love and appreciate the school, the faculty, and community. Dutchess Day School students are exposed to a clear value system, high academic standards, and a sense of respect for individuals. Believing in an institution like DDS makes us feel good about giving, especially when our child is in a healthy, safe environment. We are proud parents at this — JUSTIN AND PAIGE HOGARTH, DDS parents amazing school. Why do I give to the annual fund? I give because I know that the annual fund fills the financial gap to pay for much needed line items in the budget and that it's important for the faculty and staff to show support. But besides all that, I give because I truly love DDS. The school seems more like a home than work and the people seem more like family than colleagues. I have watched little toddlers grow into mature 8th graders and beyond and somehow I feel a part of that growth. I also give because two of my girls received outstanding educations from DDS. Both of them became teachers, and one even returned to teach at Dutchess. How could I not give? — GAYLE FEDELE, Assistant to the Head of School, past parent, former teacher, former athletic director I give because the annual fund provides our school with the vital resources that enable it to continue providing enriching programs and unique educational experiences—experiences my brothers and I benefited from when we were DDS students, a legacy that has passed to my nephews and my own daughters. As a member of a community to which I am dedicated, I believe in showing my support by contributing to the good of everyone who has a stake in this extraordinary school. — ELIZA THORNE ’91, parent, former PA president Dutchess gave me a good start in life, and so I support Dutchess in hopes it will give others that same good start. — JENNIFER SPEERS ’67 I give to the DDS annual find because I firmly believe that the foundational learning skills I developed through my experiences at Dutchess Day School have been more integral to my successes than my other academic experiences. Perhaps the most important skill I learned was how to argue and defend a position. I would argue that substantive discourse is currently lacking among people across the world who are increasingly dissatisfied with their political and economic environment, and we are more susceptible to politicians offering simple and potentially dangerous solutions to complex problems. I thank the incredible teachers at DDS for not letting me coast and teaching me to think! — JESSE FREHLING ’06 WWW.DUTCHESSDAY.ORG ■ DDS ANNUAL REPORT 2016 15 DUTCHESS DAY SCHOOL’S 57TH COMMENCEMENT | CLASS OF 2016 On Saturday, June 11, 2016, twenty-one 8th graders arrived at Dutchess Day School only to leave a few hours later as graduates. Dressed in the traditional white dresses and blue blazers, the following students filed out into the Bontecou Courtyard: Max Alden, Lyla Andrick, Kian Arbabi, David Ben-Ezra, Bjorn Bowser, Jackie Crowley, Jade DeStefano, Jacob Domber, Lilia Holder, Eve Kantaros, Sevilla Kent, William Leggat, Claire Macedonia, Kimia Mohyeddin, Elizabeth Montfort, Cora Page, Alice Rosi-Marshall, Robert Salladay, Desmond Teague, Christopher Turino, and Laurence Wilson III. Students, faculty, staff, and parents gathered under the white tents to honor the school’s 57th graduating class. The commencement ceremony was the final celebration of a landmark year: our 60th anniversary. Head of school, Nancy Hathaway, welcomed everyone in her opening comments and addressed the graduating class. Next, board president, Douglas Dundas, made a statement, remarking that the “60-year achievement of our school is manifest, it is made completely real, in each one of you… our graduates.” According to DDS tradition, two members of the graduating class addressed the assembled guests. Claire Macedonia recalled starting at Dutchess Day in preschool as a three year old as well as a number of “firsts”—such as performing in plays, learning to debate, and reading Shakespeare and Dickens—that she experienced along the way. “I may have been here for eleven years, but they were the quickest eleven years of my fourteen years so far.” Next, William Leggat addressed the members of his class individually, to honor each one and to remind them that they are a cohesive group of separate and 16 DDS ANNUAL REPORT 201 6 ■ WWW.DUTCHESSDAY.ORG interesting individuals each of whom made a mark on the school and one another. William noted: “Within each of us is the potential for making a contribution. To paraphrase Saint Paul, ‘To whom much is given, much will be asked,’ and I’m sure that in high school—much will be asked. But from everything I’ve seen in my years here and from all the success our class has achieved already, I have full confidence that we’ll be able to give our all to what is asked of us.” This year the graduating students asked Mrs. Eleanor Yates, who taught them when they were in fifth grade, to give the commencement address. Mrs. Yates regaled the class with memories gathered from all the teachers who had the pleasure of teaching them, as well as anecdotes from their time in her classroom. As the skies unleashed a dramatic rainstorm, she reminded them of the importance of having fun, being silly sometimes, and using their imaginations. She made note of the power of forgiveness and the importance of having grit and determination. She emphasized how vital it is to serve others, to have self-respect, to cooperate, and to be willing to make sacrifices when it matters. The performances were cut short by the rain, but two of the choruses were able to sing: the seventh and eighth grade chorus sang “Here’s to Song” by Allister MacGillvray, and the third and fourth grade chorus performed “Old Irish Blessing” be Denes Agay. After receiving their diplomas, and refusing to be put off by the cascading rain, the graduating class sang “Humble and Kind” by Lori McKenna. The song, selected by the class, reflects many of the lessons they absorbed while at Dutchess Day School, including: “Hold the door, say please, say thank you/ Don’t steal, don’t cheat, and don’t lie/ I know you got mountains to climb but/ Always stay humble and kind.” OPPOSITE, LEFT TO RIGHT: Lilia Holder, Cora Page, Kimia Mohyeddin, Jackie Crowley, Elizabeth Mont- fort, Lyla Andrick, Claire Macedonia, Sevilla Kent, Eve Kantaros, Jade DeStefano, Alice Rosi-Marshall, Robert Salladay, Kian Arbabi, William Leggat, David Ben-Ezra, Laurence Wilson, Christopher Turino, Desmond Teague, Bjorn Bowser. 2016 DDS graduates are heading to the following schools this September: ● ● ● ● ● ● Arlington High School Blair Academy Hackley School Holderness School The Hotchkiss School Millbrook Central School ● ● ● ● ● ● Millbrook School Phillips Academy Andover Poughkeepsie Day School Red Hook High School Rhinebeck High School Westminster School “Within each of us is the potential for making a contribution. FROM THE ARCHIVES What we think of today as the DDS music and theater program was, in 1992, but a gleam in Susan Bialek’s eye. Prior to her arrival that year, Dutchess Day School had the kind of music and theater program that one might expect at a small country day school. Shortly after Susan Bialek came to DDS, those of us who were around at the time started to realize, thanks to her innovations, how much more was possible. Her vision, boundless energy, and desire for the students at this small country day school to have the very best began a transformative process. The results? Chorus. Two choruses, 3-5 and 6-8 (now we have three) open to all. Under her direction, the DDS chorus performed at Carnegie Hall, and at various competitions on the east coast, and participated in several cultural exchanges with choral groups from other schools, and even other countries (like China). Instrument lessons. Mrs. B decided that the students needed access to teachers for instruments like guitar, sax, clarinet, violin, drums and more. She took on the task of getting the program approved, organizing it, and running it. The rest is history. As a result we have musical ensembles of all sorts. Recitals. It’s true. There was a time when we had no music recitals. Mrs. Bialek introduced recitals to showcase our individual musicians and a spring concert for our ensembles to perform. NYSSMA. Mrs. Bialek got our music students involved in the NY State School Music Association’s evaluation festivals, in order to help them reach for their own personal best. 6th grade play. Thinking in terms of a theater curriculum, Mrs. Bialek realized that having two plays in upper school would allow children to build on their experience in 6th grade when they put on a play in 8th. Many remember what a game changer that was. Most of us have had an experience with a teacher who changed our lives in one way or another. Susan Bialek did that for many students who credit her instruction with opening doors into music careers or simply helping them find the sweet fulfillment of being musically educated. But not only that. She also changed the face of Dutchess Day forever by transforming its music and theater programs, raising the bar, lifting us all higher.
