Message
Dear Care Team Members,
Happy New Year! I hope you and your families enjoyed a healthy and happy start
of 2015. Now that we’re a few weeks into the New Year, it’s good to look ahead and
think about what this year may bring us. But first, a quick look back at some of our
accomplishments in 2014:
This past year we launched services that expanded our offerings to the communities
we serve. We started the year by establishing a partnership with USC’s Department
of Urology to keep more complex urologic cases at Los Robles. We introduced a
Neuroendovascular program to complement our stroke program and expanded our
cardiology services by becoming the only hospital from LA to Northern California to
offer a Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacement (TAVR) program, which makes us
the most comprehensive cardiac program in the area.
Not only did we enhance our services, we continued to build upon our beautiful
facility. The hospital underwent a seismic retrofit of the 1968 tower to ensure our
buildings are earthquake safe and performed a cosmetic upgrade so that our original tower now looks brand new. Our Acute Rehab Unit was expanded from 10 to 20
beds. The ICU and TOSH patient rooms are also being updated to ensure that we
provide the most comfortable environment for our patients.
We also had many technology upgrades added to our facility. Our Imaging Center in
Moorpark became the only center in the region to offer Tomosynthesis, or 3D Mammography, which will allow us to detect cancer earlier and reduce our recall rates.
In addition, our bi-plane room was updated with the latest technology and radiation
reduction software to give us the best images for our neuroendovasucar patients.
EVS also received a new team member when Flash, a XENEX robot, was added to
our crew to assist in disinfection and to ensure that we are providing the cleanest
and safest environment for our patients.
We were recognized for many outstanding achievements including an “A” in patient
safety by the Leapfrog Group, being named a Top Performing Hospital on Key
Quality Measures and receiving accreditation by the Joint Commission for our Heart
Failure Program. Additionally, we were recognized as a Gold Plus award winner
for our quality stroke outcomes by the American Heart Association and our Patient
Satisfaction scores peaked in the 4th quarter at 73.4%.

Los Robles Teaches
High School Students
Hands-Only CPR
On Wednesday, January 14th, Los Robles trained over
400 high school students how to perform “hands-only”
CPR, also referred to as “bystander CPR.” The training was part of Los Robles’ ongoing effort to teach
“hands-only” CPR to all of Ventura County. Hospital
staff and emergency medical technicians, along with
cardiac arrest survivors, led the training.
The students learned that if they see someone who has
collapsed, they should first check for responsiveness
to determine whether the person is indeed in cardiac
arrest and call 911.
They also learned how to properly place their hands
on the center of the chest and continue compressions
without stopping until help arrives.
On Friday, February 6th, Los Robles will conduct similar training at Thousand Oaks High School with the
goal of teaching over 650 kids.
The administrative staff and teachers at Westlake High
School will also be taught how to save lives through
“hands-only” CPR on Wednesday, February 5th.
CEO Message
(continued)
We were also very dedicated to
providing our community with
the latest health information
and education. This past year,
we held over 29 educational
events that were attended by
more than 4,000 members of
our community, participated
in several community events/
walks and trained hundreds of
people in sidewalk CPR.
I am excited for 2015 and I am
confident that it will be another
great year for Los Robles. We
will continue to add to our menu
of services with the addition of
a PICU, continued expansion
in Neurosciences, addition of
Telemedicine and an emphasis
on senior health. Our focus on
quality will be higher than ever
as we roll out patient outcome
improvement teams. Employee
Culture will also be a priority
in 2015. We will enhance
our recruitment of new staff,
focus on employee engagement at all levels, and continue to develop our leadership
team. We will also continue to
look for ways to partner with
our physicians.
Of course, there’s still a lot of
work ahead. As a leadership
team we are committed to
ensuring that your voice is
heard. As you can see, this
“Friday Message” is one additional communication vehicle
that you can look forward to
receiving on a weekly basis.
In the coming weeks, all departments will be encouraged
to display communication
boards containing hospital
and department-relevant information, goals and updates.
Each board will assist in helping to navigate our journey to
another successful year.
Thank you for all that you
do to take care of our patients and community. It is a
privilege to be part of the Los
Robles team.
You’re not alone on this
voyage; in addition, to communicating current hospital
updates, I would like to hear
from you! In the next couple
weeks, you will be able send
me a direct email through the
intranet homepage. I look
forward to receiving your
questions, comments and any
feedback you may have.

Since February 2012, John has served as the Vice President of Human
Resources for Sunrise Hospital and Sunrise Children’s Hospital (a sister
facility). John’s accomplishments at Sunrise Hospital are numerous.
During his tenure, Sunrise has recruited over 1,400 new team members
to the Sunrise family, improved many of their human resource indicators
and led several operational departments.
John comes highly recommended from those who’ve worked with him.
Along with his strong human resources knowledge he will bring operations knowledge, energy, accountability and visibility to his role. We
are excited that John has decided to return to California to be closer
to family and assume the Vice President of Human Resources role at
Los Robles. We have big plans in 2015 as we work to fulfill our vision

trusted resource for health by focusing on building our healthcare team
and driving employee engagement.
Please join us in welcoming him to the Los Robles team.

Update:
There are many exciting updates that we would like you all to be
aware of. First and foremost, our NICU moved “back home” on
Thursday, January 22nd. Our Pediatrics Department will also
be relocated in the near future – A date will be determined and
announced in an upcoming Friday message. Our C-Section
Recovery Room renovation is scheduled to commence at the end
of this month. In addition, our PICU is still awaiting OSHPD occupancy approval; we are excited about this addition and look forward
to sharing further details with you in the near future.
In other news, we will begin the flooring removal process on the 1st
floor of Tower #2 near the Pharmacy on Saturday, January 24th. Our
Administration and Surgery area will continue renovation with a
forecasted occupancy of mid-March, and our Infusion Room renovation continues with a projected completion date of April 6th.
This year we will begin to honor our nurses through the DAISY Award
program. This award recognizes those nurses who consistently demonstrate excellence through their clinical expertise, extraordinary compassionate care, and as an outstanding role model in nursing.
The DAISY Award was established in 1999 by the family of Patrick
Barnes who died of complications of the auto-immune disease Idiopathic
Thrombocytopenia Purpura (ITP) at the age of 33. DAISY is an acronym
for Disease Attacking the Immune System. During his hospitalization
the family was very impressed by the care and compassion shown by the
nurses. The family developed a foundation in Patrick’s memory to recognize nurses across the country that have made an enormous difference in
the lives of their patients. We are proud to be a partner of this program.
Applications will be available throughout the hospital and on the intranet
starting in February.

Message from our CEO
Happy Summer Everyone!
Whether you plan on enjoying
BBQ’s, summer beach trips
or summer vacations, I hope
that you and your loved ones
have a fantastic summer
and remember to stay safe!
Although summer is a season
that reminds us of fun and
leisure, we also know that in
our profession, our work is
never done. We work around the clock, and are
always here to support our patients, and for that I
thank you.
The commitment and support that you show on a
regular basis is the reason that working in healthcare
is so rewarding. Yes, we all have those days that are
busy and overwhelming, but making a difference in
our community and the lives of our patients makes
it all worthwhile. When we all work together for the
common good of our patients we are unstoppable.
This summer, I encourage each and every one of
you to get involved and be active in our community.
Branch out and volunteer at one of our sponsored
events and show your Los Robles pride by
representing us in the community. Being active in
our community makes all the difference! At the end
of the day, we are ALL here for the same reason;
for the well-being of our patients. Don’t be afraid to
show it! I feel blessed to be a part of this organization
and look forward to stepping up our engagement
level. Remember, we are committed to being the
community’s most trusted resource for health and
a regional destination for care.
Here’s to being engaged!
Natalie Mussi, President & CEO
RIDERS: ON YOUR MARK, GET SET, GO!
With the rush of bicyclists speeding
down the starting line, thousands
of people gathered in beautiful
Westlake Village on Sunday, May
18, for a chance to see their favorite
racers compete in the final leg of
the Amgen Tour of California.
Los Robles Hospital & Medical
Center didn’t miss a beat in
joining in on the fun. As a major
sponsor of the event, we hosted
a VIP tent, in partnership with
the City of Thousand Oaks, that
housed a viewing lounge and
breakfast and lunch buffets. We
also had a lifestyle booth for the
general public that featured staff
members and volunteer nurses
rallying together to teach handsonly CPR. With the vivacious beat
of “Staying Alive” playing in the
background, guests of all ages
stopped by to learn how they can
save a life. Participants were also
able to pick up some of the latest
Los Robles giveaways - retro
wayfarer sunglasses, lip balm and
tote bags. It wasn’t long before
the event grounds were filled
with a sea of bright green and
blue.
As the race came to an end, we
were reminded of the wonderful
community that we are a part of
and the relationships we have
built over the years.

Our Volunteers are Out of This World!
Each year the hospital sponsors an annual recognition
dinner to thank the volunteers for all of their hard work
and commitment.
This year’s theme was Volunteers are out of this World.
With the fun future theme in place, our Volunteers arrived
at the Reagan Library dressed to the nines, in their black,
white and purple attire. To go along with the theme, we
welcomed some iconic visitors to the event including
Darth Vader, Princess Leia, a space cadet and our CEO
dressed as Los Robles’ very own alien.
Irene Brennick, the Director of Volunteers, hosted
the event, and as you can imagine, there was never a
dull moment. From funny awards, which praised the
Volunteers for their hard work, to the distribution of pins
that recognized their hours and years of service, the night
was full of surprises. This year, we even incorporated the
use of iPads and Skyped with Volunteers while they were
on vacation so they didn’t miss the event.
The night was truly a success and a great way to end
Volunteer Week! Our Leadership Team, Directors,
Managers and Supporting Staff were in on the fun as
they celebrated the hard-work our volunteers do day in
and day out. Here’s to our Volunteer Program and the
wonderful individuals that take part in it!
New Service Lines Added to Our Lineup
Neuroendovascular Surgery, also known as interventional neuroradiology, utilizes
minimally invasive procedures to treat complex diseases that affect the delicate areas
of the brain, neck and spine. These minimally invasive procedures allow our surgeons to
effectively treat various conditions, such as brain aneurysms, arteriovenous malformations,
arteriovenous fistulas and stroke. How you may ask? The procedure is done by threading
small wires and catheters through arteries and veins. Through this minimally invasive
technique, conditions are treated from within the blood vessels, without the need of a
traditional surgical procedure. At the end of the day, utilizing these minimally invasive
procedures provide many benefits to our patients, such as fewer complication rates and
quicker recovery times.
Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacement (TAVR) has changed the future of cardiac
care. Until recently, the only way to get a new heart valve was to have open heart surgery.
The TAVR procedure allows patients to undergo aortic valve replacement through a small
incision in the skin. Whether or not the patient is eligible for a TAVR procedure is up to the
TAVR team. If the patient is determined to be high risk or is too sick for open heart surgery,
then TAVR may be the answer that is the most appropriate for some of our patients. How
does it work? The less invasive procedure allows for a new valve to be inserted within the
diseased aortic valve while the patient’s heart is still beating. A cardiopulmonary bypass
isn’t required, however, during parts of the procedure, the patient’s heart rate may need
to be temporarily increased to a very fast rate, which results in a lower than normal blood
flow to vital organs for short periods of time. The TAVR procedure can be performed
through three different approaches – transfemoral, tranasapical or transaortic. Through
TAVR, patients that have been identified to have complications from a traditional open
heart surgery are provided with an alternative that is better suited for them.

Campaign Hits
the Community
Los Robles recently launched its latest ad
campaign, “Well within reach,” which can be
seen in our local newspapers, at The Oaks
Mall and other outdoor and retail venues.
What is the intent of the, “Well within
reach” statement? As a healthcare leader
and community hospital, Los Robles is
constantly evolving to offer our patients
the best resources available, whether
it’s the latest state-of-the-art technology
or breakthroughs in medicine. We also
strive to act as proponents of health and
encourage our community to be proactive
when it comes to living a healthy lifestyle.
In other words, we are champions of being
“Well.” Combined with lifestyle images,
our new ad campaign focuses on our
commitment to keeping the community
healthy while showcasing the fact that we
are close by.
In addition to the ad campaign, we
also recently launched our community
publication,
“Well”
Magazine.
The
publication was mailed out to 55,000
households that includes employees,
volunteers and physicians. When you
receive your copy, make sure to read
through it to see our patient testimonials,
summer tips, latest sponsored events
and an article featuring our very own Frist
Humanitarian Award winners. We are
proud of who we are, and look forward to
showing our community that we are the
community’s most trusted resource for
health and a regional destination for care
all while being Well within reach!
Los Robles Hospital & Medical Center employees were
decked out in their lime green team attire as they darted
across the starting line for the 21st annual Senior
Concerns Love Run.
The 10K, 5K and 1 mile walk/run benefited Meals-onWheels and the Alzheimer’s Day Care Program at Senior
Concerns. With the presence of over 70 employees and
family members, the Los Robles Team was vivacious and
ready to spread their Los Robles Spirit. The day was full
of bonding with co-workers, family and friends, while
supporting a great cause. A huge thank you to all of our
employees, volunteers and physicians that participated
in the run and volunteered at our booth. We couldn’t
have done it without you!

USC MARCHING BAND
DELIVERS A FINAL TRIBUTE TO
ONE OF THEIR BIGGEST FANS
Wednesday, July 24th was a day to remember for one
of our patients and his loved ones. Family, friends and
hospital employees gathered around the 88-year-old
man’s hospital bed as it was wheeled out to our main
lobby for a special surprise. The USC Trojan fan was
about to be serenaded by the USC Marching Band. It
wasn’t long before trombones, trumpets, drums and a
tuba swung into action as 10 members of USC’s marching
band paraded into our main lobby. Our Westlake Village
fan joined in tapping his fingers to the beat of the music,
as family and friends joined him in singing USC’s Alma
Matter. The presentation was organized by the patient’s
daughter who wanted to give “the greatest Trojan of them
all” the farewell he deserved. Our patient was discharged
on Wednesday afternoon shortly after the tribute. Family
and friends were left feeling overjoyed and peaceful
knowing that they gave their beloved Trojan fan a tribute
that was just right.

courteous with my father and the rest of the family.
They were very respectful and knew when it was the
right time to talk to us and when they should leave
us to our thoughts.”

busy and overwhelming, but making a difference in
our community and the lives of our patients makes
it all worthwhile.
At the end
of the day, we are ALL here for the same reason;
for the well-being of our patients. Don’t be afraid to
show it! I feel blessed to be a part of this organization
and look forward to stepping up our engagement
level. Remember, we are committed to being the
community’s most trusted resource for health and
a regional destination for care.
Here’s to being engaged!

RIDERS: ON YOUR MARK, GET SET, GO!
With the rush of bicyclists speeding
down the starting line, thousands
of people gathered in beautiful
Westlake Village on Sunday, May
18, for a chance to see their favorite
racers compete in the final leg of
the Amgen Tour of California.
Los Robles Hospital & Medical
Center didn’t miss a beat in
joining in on the fun. As a major
sponsor of the event, we hosted
a VIP tent, in partnership with
the City of Thousand Oaks, that
housed a viewing lounge and
breakfast and lunch buffets. We
also had a lifestyle booth for the
general public that featured staff
members and volunteer nurses
rallying together to teach handsonly CPR. With the vivacious beat
of “Staying Alive” playing in the
background, guests of all ages
stopped by to learn how they can
save a life. Participants were also
able to pick up some of the latest
Los Robles giveaways - retro
wayfarer sunglasses, lip balm and
tote bags. It wasn’t long before
the event grounds were filled
with a sea of bright green and
blue.
As the race came to an end, we
were reminded of the wonderful
community that we are a part of
and the relationships we have
built over the years.

Our Volunteers are Out of This World!
Each year the hospital sponsors an annual recognition
dinner to thank the volunteers for all of their hard work
and commitment.
This year’s theme was Volunteers are out of this World.
With the fun future theme in place, our Volunteers arrived
at the Reagan Library dressed to the nines, in their black,
white and purple attire. To go along with the theme, we
welcomed some iconic visitors to the event including
Darth Vader, Princess Leia, a space cadet and our CEO
dressed as Los Robles’ very own alien.
Irene Brennick, the Director of Volunteers, hosted
the event, and as you can imagine, there was never a
dull moment. From funny awards, which praised the
Volunteers for their hard work, to the distribution of pins
that recognized their hours and years of service, the night
was full of surprises. This year, we even incorporated the
use of iPads and Skyped with Volunteers while they were
on vacation so they didn’t miss the event.
The night was truly a success and a great way to end
Volunteer Week! Our Leadership Team, Directors,
Managers and Supporting Staff were in on the fun as
they celebrated the hard-work our volunteers do day in
and day out. Here’s to our Volunteer Program and the
wonderful individuals that take part in it!
New Service Lines Added to Our Lineup
Neuroendovascular Surgery, also known as interventional neuroradiology, utilizes
minimally invasive procedures to treat complex diseases that affect the delicate areas
of the brain, neck and spine. These minimally invasive procedures allow our surgeons to
effectively treat various conditions, such as brain aneurysms, arteriovenous malformations,
arteriovenous fistulas and stroke. How you may ask? The procedure is done by threading
small wires and catheters through arteries and veins. Through this minimally invasive
technique, conditions are treated from within the blood vessels, without the need of a
traditional surgical procedure. At the end of the day, utilizing these minimally invasive
procedures provide many benefits to our patients, such as fewer complication rates and
quicker recovery times.
Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacement (TAVR) has changed the future of cardiac
care. Until recently, the only way to get a new heart valve was to have open heart surgery.
The TAVR procedure allows patients to undergo aortic valve replacement through a small
incision in the skin. Whether or not the patient is eligible for a TAVR procedure is up to the
TAVR team. If the patient is determined to be high risk or is too sick for open heart surgery,
then TAVR may be the answer that is the most appropriate for some of our patients. How
does it work? The less invasive procedure allows for a new valve to be inserted within the
diseased aortic valve while the patient’s heart is still beating. A cardiopulmonary bypass
isn’t required, however, during parts of the procedure, the patient’s heart rate may need
to be temporarily increased to a very fast rate, which results in a lower than normal blood
flow to vital organs for short periods of time. The TAVR procedure can be performed
through three different approaches – transfemoral, tranasapical or transaortic. Through
TAVR, patients that have been identified to have complications from a traditional open
heart surgery are provided with an alternative that is better suited for them.
CODE OF CONDUCT
Don’t wait until the last minute! Take the 2014 Code of Conduct
with anticipation. All employees must complete the Code of
Conduct by Friday, October 31, 2014. To access the course, visit

New Ad
Campaign Hits
the Community
Los Robles recently launched its latest ad
campaign, “Well within reach,” which can be
seen in our local newspapers, at The Oaks
Mall and other outdoor and retail venues.
What is the intent of the, “Well within
reach” statement? As a healthcare leader
and community hospital, Los Robles is
constantly evolving to offer our patients
the best resources available, whether
it’s the latest state-of-the-art technology
or breakthroughs in medicine. We also
strive to act as proponents of health and
encourage our community to be proactive
when it comes to living a healthy lifestyle.
In other words, we are champions of being
“Well.” Combined with lifestyle images,
our new ad campaign focuses on our
commitment to keeping the community
healthy while showcasing the fact that we
are close by.
In addition to the ad campaign, we
also recently launched our community
publication,
“Well”
Magazine.
The
publication was mailed out to 55,000
households that includes employees,
volunteers and physicians. When you
receive your copy, make sure to read
through it to see our patient testimonials,
summer tips, latest sponsored events
and an article featuring our very own Frist
Humanitarian Award winners. We are
proud of who we are, and look forward to
showing our community that we are the
community’s most trusted resource for
health and a regional destination for care
all while being Well within reach!
Los Robles Hospital & Medical Center employees were
decked out in their lime green team attire as they darted
across the starting line for the 21st annual Senior
Concerns Love Run.
The 10K, 5K and 1 mile walk/run benefited Meals-onWheels and the Alzheimer’s Day Care Program at Senior
Concerns. With the presence of over 70 employees and
family members, the Los Robles Team was vivacious and
ready to spread their Los Robles Spirit. The day was full
of bonding with co-workers, family and friends, while
supporting a great cause. A huge thank you to all of our
employees, volunteers and physicians that participated
in the run and volunteered at our booth. We couldn’t
have done it without you!

USC MARCHING BAND
DELIVERS A FINAL TRIBUTE TO
ONE OF THEIR BIGGEST FANS
Wednesday, July 24th was a day to remember for one
of our patients and his loved ones. Family, friends and
hospital employees gathered around the 88-year-old
man’s hospital bed as it was wheeled out to our main
lobby for a special surprise. The USC Trojan fan was
about to be serenaded by the USC Marching Band. It
wasn’t long before trombones, trumpets, drums and a
tuba swung into action as 10 members of USC’s marching
band paraded into our main lobby. Our Westlake Village
fan joined in tapping his fingers to the beat of the music,
as family and friends joined him in singing USC’s Alma
Matter. The presentation was organized by the patient’s
daughter who wanted to give “the greatest Trojan of them
all” the farewell he deserved. Our patient was discharged
on Wednesday afternoon shortly after the tribute. Family
and friends were left feeling overjoyed and peaceful
knowing that they gave their beloved Trojan fan a tribute
that was just right.

good to me…”
“Thank you Los Robles Hospital for the best labor,
delivery and postpartum experience!”
Yelp
“My mother stayed here for a few weeks and I have
to say that I was very impressed with the service
that was given. Not only were the nurses attentive
to my mother and her needs, they were also very
courteous with my father and the rest of the family.
They were very respectful and knew when it was the
right time to talk to us and when they should leave
us to our thoughts.”
“Excellent hospital - came here for the care of my ill
toddler and from doctors to nurses and staff were
very professional, quick and efficient. ER could use a
little more help to expedite their patient evaluation
from doctor however, they were very compassionate
and caring for my toddler and also very friendly.
Hospital is clean, well equipped and full of very
helpful and knowledgeable staff. Grateful to have
this place locally.”
