21st NEW YORK DISTRICT
VOL. 22, NO. 5
READ THE GOSPELS FOR THE WAY
GRAND KNIGHT’S MESSAGE
Well, we are into the last two months of this Columbian Year. As,
we look back on this past year, we have accomplished a lot but
we can do a little bit better, we must look to increase our rolls
and recruit new members. My goal for us is to attain Star Council. Star Council is a prestigious recognition by K of C Supreme to
a Council that meets specific guidelines related to programs and
membership. It has been a few years since we were so honored
and it is time to do it again!
For those of you who have not heard, our own Steve Higgins,
PGK will be appointed District Deputy to our district, the twentyfirst when this Columbian year ends on June 30th. He will be replacing our good friend who has been our faithful DD, Mike
Muirhead. A heartfelt thank you to Mike, for all you have done
for Our District and Council through your long term as our DD.
Congratulations, Steve, you have some big shoes to fill and you
are the right man for this job! While on the subject of our district, we will be praying the Living rosary on Tuesday May 23 rd
at Saint Ignatius in Long Beach at 7:30. Our DD Mike has asked
us to attend with Our Chaplain and 10 members to form a decade of the rosary. We will work out a car pool along with our
intentions for the rosary at our May 11th meeting.
Don’t forget CYO Track meet on May 7th. This food concession is
a financial must for our council coffers and we need manpower.
If you have not signed up, call Steve Higgins or myself, now!
Vivat Jesus!
Thomas Donza, GK
Editor’s Note from Bob Stewart
As many of you know, I was selected as Knight of the Year for 200506 at the April 23rd Communion Breakfast. It was an exciting honor
for me and I wanted to thank my fellow Knights. I think it is also
important for me to thank my sponsor, Dan Gerrity. Over the past
few years, we have worked on many events together, and he has
been a great teacher and source of motivation for me. I think it is
fitting for me to recognize his generosity and the leadership he has
brought to this council. In many ways, he represents the spirit of
why I got involved—and remain involved with the Knights. With
sincere thanks for everything you bring, Dan, I remain, your brother
Knight.
Bob.

What a great stroke of luck that the Gerrity's won
the Grand Prize of $3,000.00! Fellow Knight Steve

“Why I Joined the
Knights of Columbus” by Brian J. Kiernan
Every Catholic’s goal is to seek God in everyday life.
Whether it is through an encounter with a stranger, a conversation with a longtime friend, or quiet time with a loved
one, God is always present. It is up to us to find Him and
do our best to recognize His love for us and to serve Him in
any way that we can.
The Knights of Columbus presents me with the opportunity
to participate in events that will help raise money for many
charities. I will also meet new people and receive the many
benefits that the Knights of Columbus offers to its members.
My wife, Jeannine, and I are expecting our first child this
August. I believe that being a Knight will make me a better
Catholic, which will in turn help me receive God’s grace to
be the best father to my child as possible.
My First Degree was in March, a very rewarding experience.
I am looking forward to the next two Degrees which will be
in April and June respectively. Although I have only been a
member since March 28, I am already certain that I have
made the right decision by joining. Everyone has been extremely welcoming and helpful. I am ready for a lifetime of
service to God and the Knights of Columbus provides me
with a great opportunity to do so.
If anyone reading this is not a member of the Knights of
Columbus, I strongly suggest that you join. There is a great
new book out entitled Parish Priest by Douglas Brinkley and
Julie M. Fenster, which is a summary of the founder of the
Knights, Father Michael McGivney’s life, and why he formed
the organization. I suggest that all members and nonmembers read it. It may turn non-members into members,
and help those all who already members become better
servants of God.
God bless.
Editor’s Note: Brian Kiernan is “the new guy” having taken
his first and second degrees last month and has jumped in
with both feet. We appreciate his enthusiasm and look for
him to complete his third degree in June.
Ed Farrell Honored as
Knight of the Month for April and
Ed Cook Takes Off for Iraq
Ed Farrell has been on a roll...and as a result has been honored with a special award recognizing his many contributions including an innovative “Cabaret Night” and a St.
Patrick’s Dance Party. Congratulations for a job well done,
Ed.
May 7 Track Meet at ER HS
Volunteers Welcomed Pray for
Good Weather!
If you’re looking to work an exciting and fun FULL day
event, then look no further than the Annual Track Meet on
May 7th at East Rockaway High School. It’s a great way to
contribute to the council and help us with a very important
event on our calendar. Set up is early, so plan to arrive at
7:00AM. If you can offer a few hours during the day, great.
We’re there till about 4:00 PM. Something new, we’re setting up a “satellite” station on the opposite side of the
field to sell soda and water.
VFW Hall Available for
Your Special Events
If you need a special place to hold an anniversary, birthday,
sweet 16 or any other event to bring your family and friends
together, consider the VFW Hall on Main Street in East Rockaway. This is a terrific venue to hold any event that includes
full kitchen facilities, a wonderful dance floor, outdoor decking, custom lighting and warm gathering place. For more
information, contact Commander - Joe McCarthy, Council
Phone 617-887-8170.
From The Deacon’s Bench
Because of the work that I do both as a deacon and working
full time for the Knights, I encounter many parents who ask
me what they should do about their teenage or older children who no longer want to go to Church. Unfortunately it is
a problem we see more and more with the passing of time.
It's certainly not a new problem, however. In the book,
"Parish Priest," the story of our founder, Fr. Michael McGivney, the author talks about Fr. McGivney's efforts, back in
the nineteenth century, to bring the young men back into
parish life and especially get them to attend Sunday Mass.
As we begin to mature, many things are happening within
us. Our spirit of independence begins to emerge and with it
comes questions. As we advance through school and into
college and beyond, those questions can develop into
doubts and a pulling away from our faith. The outside world
holds many inviting temptations for us and a faith built on a
sandy foundation will crumble.
A faith built on a sturdy foundation may at times falter but it
will ultimately withstand all pressures and re-emerge strong.
That foundation is built by parents and grandparents who
show their children how important God is in their own lives.
The mortar that keeps that foundation strong is the prayers
that we say, or should say, each day for these children.
Prayer can move mountains, prayer can accomplish much.
Please remember to pray for our young people every day.
Deacon Tom
Please keep Ed Cook in your prayers as he takes his place
in Iraq. Hope to see you back soon, Ed!

Pray for the Sick & Deceased
At this most inspirational time of year, please pray
for the sick of our parish and deceased brothers. Our
prayers for GK Tom Donza continue as he recovers
from his surgery.
Knights Insurance Corner
You know, as hard as it is to believe, one-fifth of the
population thinks the most practical route to wealth is
winning the lottery. We all like to daydream about hitting it big someday.
Dreams are wonderful to have but they don't pay the
bills and they can't substitute for good financial planning. There is nothing sadder than to hear a widow
lamenting that she doesn't know what she and the kids
are going to do for want of money. It happens every
day of the week, every week of year; and the even sadder part is that it never has to be that way. Fr. McGivney founded our Order so widows will have an avenue
where they can be protected. Take advantage of this
most important benefit of your membership in the
Knights of Columbus. Call your Field Agent right away
and make an appointment.

My father, Emilio Corrado, recently passed away at
age 88 after a brief illness. He was a life member of
the Knights of Columbus, O’Connell Council, Oceanside. He attended a number of our Council activities
with great enjoyment and was accorded the most
cordial reception every time. I wish to thank everyone
for making these occasions at Monsignor Walsh
Council a happy time for him. It was very nice of you
to have welcomed him as a brother Knight. Again,
thank you for your expressions of sympathy.
