In partnership
with Fort Worden
State Park,
Centrum serves as
a gathering place for creative artists
and learners of all ages seeking
extraordinary cultural enrichment.
oUr MiSSion is to foster creative
experiences that change lives. From
exploring the roots of the blues or
jazz, to the traditions of American
fiddle music or our award-winning
writers’ workshop—Centrum’s summer festivals transform the majestic,
inspired setting of Fort Worden State
Park into a unique arts destination.
Join US, year-round, and discover a
full array of mainstage performances,
nightclub events, literary readings,
lectures, dances, programs for youth
and so much more.
oUr ProGraMS welcome participants from across the globe.
In 2015, we served participants from
14 countries, 46 out of 50 states, and
77 percent of the counties in Washington. And 27 percent of those we
serve are age 18 or younger and our
participants range in age from 4 to 98!
We’re proud to inaugurate two new
partnerships in 2016. We invite you to
enjoy the Olympic Music Festival at
Centrum this summer, a collaboration
that magnifies our own celebrated
Centrum Chamber Music series and
workshop. We also launch a new
 Ticket Buyers  Participants
three-year commitment to creative
arts programming for students of
migrant families in Washington this
June—a partnership with the State
Superintendent of Public Instruction.
We present our programs with additional support from the Washington
State Arts Commission, State Parks
WeLC oMe
Commission, National Endowment
for the Arts and the Fort Worden
PDA. We thank the many donors
and generous sponsors who support
Centrum and our unique role in our
Puget Sound community, and I hope
you will too!
Please join us for cultural experiences
you simply cannot find anywhere else
on earth.

Brazilian Choro represents the
melding of European melodic
and harmonic traditions with
African rhythms and sensibilities.
Emerging in Brazil in the middle
of the nineteenth century, Choro
is a cousin of American jazz, with
a sense of yearning that is often
described as a “sweet lament.”
Many ethnomusicologists believe
that the name Choro comes from
the Portuguese verb chorar—that
is, to weep or to cry. It often seems
bright and happy on the surface, but
if you dig deeper you’ll find a kind
of sadness, a longing that Brazilians
call saudade. When joined with its
African influences, Choro has an
irresistible groove and rhythmic
momentum that is uniquely
Brazilian.

Our world-class faculty will bring you
the most authentic Choro experience
you can find without a passport!
All performers are either natives of
Brazil or have lived there for extended
periods specifically to absorb this
music. The Choro workshop is a great
way for both jazz and classicallyoriented musicians to meet on
common ground. There are written
charts with lively melodies accessible
to any competent player. There’s
also room for improvisation, and in
a vein that’s a great way for classical
musicians to expand their skills in
this area. This workshop is open to
strings, woodwinds, accordion/piano
and hand-percussion and is limited to
forty-five people. Register early and
reserve your seats early—our Choro
concert sells out every year.

AUGust 7-13, 2016
June 19-25, 2016
Grades 9-12
Voices from the Field Arts Academy
provides outstanding arts experiences
for middle school students in
Washington State’s Migrant Education
program. A wide variety of offerings at
Voices from the Field include theater,
spoken word, poetry, dance, visual
art and music during a week-long
residential program.
Presented in partnership with Seattle
Theatre Group, the DANCE
This! Camp at Centrum provides an
opportunity for high school students
to study a wide range of dance styles
and techniques in a supportive, yet
challenging atmosphere.
Centrum’s distinguished artist faculty
members are role models for young
people. They help to open the world
of ideas while providing the skills
necessary to apply them. Guidance from
these diverse and highly qualified artists
encourages creativity and helps kids to
persevere, receive and give feedback,
solve problems, work collaboratively
and have fun.
For this program, Centrum is
collaborating with the Office of the
Superintendent of Public Education’s
(OSPI) Migrant Education Program and
five schools from Washington State.
We believe that experiences in
meaningful arts classes will inspire
youth to find their own strengths and
creativity and be an avenue through
which increased literacy and academic
development can occur.

Water World, a dynamic
collaboration between Centrum and
the Port Townsend Marine Science
Center, is filled with activities and
projects that expand and enhance
elementary students’ experience of
the marine world through the lenses
of both science and art.
In collaboration with artists,
scientists, and peers from across the
state, students integrate scientific
investigations with creative writing,
dance, and visual art.
Evening programs include
storytelling, and a student
presentation on the final night,
showcasing new learning about
marine ecosystems and
sharing artistic creations.
For this program, student
groups of 4 to 6 sign up
with an adult chaperone.

June 5-10, 2016
During Tales, Texts & Theater, the
entire sixth grade student body
of Port Townsend’s Blue Heron
Middle School will work with vital,
contemporary artists in a variety
of disciplines—creative writing,
theatrical movement, music, and
visual art.
Based on Explorations, each
afternoon the core artist faculty
show and talk about the work
they do. At the end of the week,
students share their creative
experiments with the community in

Artist reSidenCieS
Since 1980, Centrum’s Artists-inResidence program has welcomed
hundreds of artists and creative
thinkers of all genres to immerse
themselves in the historic charm and
natural beauty of Fort Worden. The
historic campus has miles of beaches
and a hillside of forest peppered with
World War I era batteries and bunkers.
It is the perfect place to amplify your
creativity—whether through walking
the trails or working in a studio.
Residencies are scheduled year-round,
in week-long blocks, with the exception
of late June until mid-August, and
during the week from Christmas to
New Year's.
Whether you are an individual seeking
a solitary, intimate environment in
which to develop new works or a group
of artists looking for a comfortable and
inspirational space in which to work
collaboratively, Centrum can support
your vision.

Artist reSidenCy
I love Centrum.
Centrum is 24/7 artist’s heaven.
~PAMM HANSON
My time thus far at Centrum
has been undeniably positive.
It has been a welcome reprieve
from my usually stressful, fastpaced life, and has provided me
an invaluable space for quiet
contemplation and work.
Centrum proudly launches into the
third year of its initiative to support
artists at the beginning of their careers.
The Emerging Artists Residency is a
month-long residency with housing,
studio space and a stipend provided
to six visual artists, chosen by an
independent jury.
For reSidenCy
ProGraMS ContaCt:
Finalists are selected through an
invitation-only process. Educators and
cultural producers from throughout the
Northwest, Alaska and Canada nominate artists who have graduated from
a fine arts program within the last five
years. The nominated artists are then
invited to apply.
Program Manager,
Martha Worthley

Centrum’s goal is for artists to deepen
their practice and spend a month in

intensives
Fort Worden State Park | port townsend, WA
Centrum “intensives” are total immersion—intimate, short bursts of
creative exploration. Built around a
long weekend, these workshops fit
easily into busy schedules and provide
an infusion of inspiration to help you
elevate your skills to the next level.
You will reside and interact with a
tight-knit group of people who share
your passion, and you will be led by
masters of the craft. Intensives are
often ‘one-off’ workshops that don’t
necessarily repeat every year, so it’s
good to seize the moment and sign up
when you see one that calls to you.
Workshop space is still available!

Writing Long
or Linked Poems
May 19 - 22, 2016
November 10-13, 2016
Centrum’s Vintage Jazz “Hot
Strings” workshop celebrates the
contributions of pioneering string
players in the burgeoning hot
jazz of the 1920’s and ’30’s. They
include folks like Joe Venuti and
Eddie Lang, Stephane Grappelli
and Django Reinhardt, Slim Gaillard
and Slam Stewart, Stuff Smith,
Oscar Aleman, Lonnie Johnson,
and Eddie South.
In his narrative lyric The Love Song of J.
Alfred Prufrock, T.S. Eliot sustains a singular
voice through 140 lines and teaches us
what it means to “disturb the universe.”
In this class, participants begin by looking
at successful examples of linked or long
poems, then will be led through a series of
generative exercises meant to stretch your
narrative, lyric, meditative, and dramatic
powers to produce a series of pieces that
could work together as one long text or in
concert as linked poems.
Whether your focus is Early Jazz,
Hokum Jazz, Gypsy Swing, Jug
Band, or Western Swing, we have
a place for you!
Our faculty includes guitarist and
master of 1920’s and 30’s jazz
styles, Matt Munisteri; violinist
Julian Smedley; bassist Matt
Weiner, and guitarist Cyd Smith.
Workshop space is still available!
Learn from the masters in this
total-immersion workshop open
to string players of all skill levels.

Fort Worden State Park
Centrum’s 2016 Gala and Auction, at
The Commons at Fort Worden, will
draw arts and education supporters
from throughout the Puget Sound
and Olympic Peninsula for an evening
of live music, delicious hors d’oeuvres
and libations, a plated dinner, and
bidding on exciting adventures and
exquisite items.
Join a lively crowd of 270+ to enjoy
local and organic food prepared by
Fort Worden’s team of premier chefs
and caterers; bidding in silent and
live auctions guided by our energetic
auctioneer, Laura Michalek; a Funda-Dream presentation and paddle
raise; and a raffle for a luxury Holland
America cruise for two on any one of
its seven routes.
The Gala is a fabulous and fun party,
but behind the festive atmosphere
28
lies a serious purpose: raising
funds that help Centrum promote
creative experiences that change
lives. With the generous and
thoughtful support of our Gala
guests, Centrum continues to bring
multiple generations together to
celebrate creativity in community.
Revenues from the live and silent
auctions are devoted to the wide
array of opportunities described in
this brochure, which serve 32,000
adults and youth annually—
artists, workshop participants,
and audience members—from 17
countries, 46 out of 50 states, and
three-fourths of the counties in
Washington state.
The Fund-a-Dream paddle raise
invites guests to make donations
to our scholarship fund, allowing
deserving students of all ages to
attend Centrum’s inspiring and
transformative workshops.
Our annual Gala and Auction
only happens with the support
of our big-hearted and talented
community of donors and
volunteers. It’s the result of
the hard work, dedication, and
the commitment of nearly 100
Centrum supporters and 200
businesses and individuals
who sponsor or contribute
items to the auction, led by a
volunteer Gala Committee with
the production and technical
expertise of Centrum staff.

art and culture for the next generation.
Every season, Centrum receives more than
$150,000 in requests from participants-inneed of scholarship assistance. Your charitable
gift can allow many to experience creativity
and art through Centrum’s annual workshops
and live performances.
Last year alone, Centrum served aspiring
artists from 17 countries, 46 out of 50 states,
and 77% of the counties in Washington. Our
workshop participants ranged in age from 4
to 97! And 27% of our enrollees were age 18
or younger, helping Centrum truly fulfill its
mission to provide lifelong learning at Fort
Worden State Park.
Annual donors receive special benefits
including invitations to receptions with our
artists, priority access to ticket purchases,
concierge services and more. Plus, donors
who give $100 or more in 2016 will receive
Centrum’s first-ever highlights CD with
excerpts from the year’s most memorable
performances.
