at 33 East Canon Perdido Street, in Santa Barbara
This charming and unexpected trio features Sutton’s lush vocals
with DownBeat’s “flutist of the year,” Hubert Laws, and stellar
guitar by Larry Koonse. The combined talent of Sutton, Laws and
Koonse represents one of the most creative forces in jazz today, as
they explore the interplay between jazz and chamber music. The
inherent intimacy of their blend should make for an unforgettable
evening of sonic exploration. Tierney Sutton normally travels with
her own stellar band, but this collaboration is one of the most touted trios in jazz today. Tickets are $100 for patron, $45 for section
A and $35 for section B. Tickets are subject to $5 per ticket Lobero
Facility Fee; other fees may also apply. The concert will feature
an opportunity for area jazz students to win a grant for school jazz
programs. Students wishing to purchase student tickets and be entered to win the Luci and Richard Janssen Youth Jazz Grant should
contact Holly Chadwin at 805-966-4946 x 613. For more information, call (805) 963-0761 or visit www.lobero.com.

Friday, April 6 at 8 p.m.
at 340 Royce Drive, in Los Angeles
Steeped in the rich (yet largely uncelebrated) tradition of AfricanAmerican string bands of the old South, the Grammy-winning Carolina Chocolate Drops have been making a name for themselves
with a uniquely modern vibe and approach. Since forming in 2005,
the up-and-coming quartet has recorded four albums of brilliant
material - including the Grammy-winning album Genuine Negro
Jig - that Rolling Stone praises for its “dirt-floor-dance electricity.”
All of the Carolina Chocolate Drops musicians sing and trade instruments including banjo, fiddle, guitar, harmonica, snare drum,
jug and kazoo. The quartet’s charm lies in an effortless ability to
balance vintage sounds with a contemporary ethos. Mexo-Americana folk group David Wax Museum (comprised primarily of
multi-instrumentalists David Wax and Suz Slezak) opens the show.
The duo fuses traditional Mexican folk with American roots and
indie rock to create an utterly unique aesthetic. Tickets are $20 for
the general public and $15 for UCLA students. For more information, call (310) 825-4401 or visit www.uclalive.org.
