Foreword
Cervantes once wrote, “Tell me with whom you eat and I will tell you who you are.”
Another more telling statement may be, “Show me your home, for that is a reflection of
your soul.”
Throughout the ages art has been humanity’s source of inspiration, happiness, and peace.
It has withstood the tests of time. Wars, revolutions, and religious persecutions have
come and gone, but the works of man’s genius are still here to teach us and bring us to
tears of awe.
For many years I have helped my friends and patrons breathe life into their personal art
collections. I have had the profound pleasure of discovering that the connection formed
between the viewer and a special artwork is the most akin to falling in love. Those who
have experienced this connection feel as if their world is suddenly full of life and joy,
that they can walk on air and do anything because they are in love.
As a Park Hyatt guest you are a very special individual. You have made a decision to
enjoy the very best of what life has to offer, to surround yourself with beauty, inspiration, and joy.
I applaud your choice and have taken the liberty of selecting a very special collection
of artworks, from the very best the art world has to offer. It would be an honor if you
would accept my personal invitation to experience and enjoy this very important
collection for yourself.
Should you have any comments or suggestions, please feel free to contact me personally.
I would be very happy to hear from you.

Pino
Pino Daeni, born Giuseppe Dangelico, in Italy, on November 8, 1939, is now the
subject of a 165 page, full color art book about his life and paintings. Trained at the
Art Institute of Bari, and later at Milan’s Academy of Brera, Pino perfected his
skills painting nudes and figure studies heavily influenced by the Pre-Raphaelites
and Macchiaioli.
After establishing himself as a successful artist in his native land, Pino decided to
immigrate to the United States, where he felt he would have more artistic freedom
and opportunity. He was soon discovered by the distinguished Borghi Gallery,
which gave several prestigious exhibitions for him in New York and Boston.

His early paintings featured soft romantic characters, mostly women dressed in
flowing skirts and dresses; these caught the attention of both Dell and Zebra book
publishers. During most of the next two decades, his Romance Period, Pino’s
oeuvre was marked by hundreds of book covers painted for artists such as Danielle
Steele, Sylvie Summerfield, and Amanda Ashley. Using a then unknown Italian
model named Fabio, Pino struck a chord that is still resounding today. Pino’s
technique, his warm and exciting colors and the subtle, but simple approach to his
subject, are his trademark, his talent, and the reasons why his paintings and limited
editions are in growing demand throughout the United States, and appreciated by
collectors throughout the world. Always underlining his success as a commercial
artist was his desire to express his own thoughts and emotions.Years later, we see
these images brought to life in Pino’s original oils on canvas, giclée, and serigraphs.
Pino’s canvases elicit feelings of warmth, nostalgia, love, and family. His paintings
are often set on vibrantly sunny beaches, typically in the Mediterranean where he
grew up. His alter ego, a young boy surrounded by beautiful women (his sisters,
aunts, and cousins), are found in various states of emotion ranging from adoration
to isolation. Many of Pino’s characters are also found frequently inhabiting sensuous
boudoirs or dressing rooms, in anticipation of their husband or lovers.

Stephen Shortridge
“Romantic Impressionist”
Born in Iowa, 1951, and raised in Southern California, Stephen excelled in art
throughout his schooling but had mainly studied commercial art. He took his first
painting class while attending Idaho State University on a water polo scholarship
(Stephen was an All-American).

“It was probably 1985 when I finally admitted to myself and everyone that I wanted
and needed to pursue my art. I had been acting for several years and, although I had
been successful, it was never where my heart was. Art was my first love and always
was. I had taken art throughout my schooling but had only taken one painting class
in college; I still don’t remember what drew me to oil painting. Looking back over
time I realize that painting provides a constant challenge. It reminds me of golf in
that you can enjoy it or be frustrated by it but never completely master it. That’s fine
with me; it’s always exciting to see where a painting ends up. I tell people that,
for the most part, I am self-taught...but, the truth is, I have been taught by
everything and everyone.”
“In the press of our worlds, I suggest a little Mozart
with your morning coffee. It slows life down ...
and might bring perspective.”

Stephen Shortridge
Stephen Charles Shortridge, the artist, may be more familiar to you as an actor. During the
seventies and eighties, Shortridge built an enviable career appearing in such well-known
television series as “Welcome Back Kotter” and “The Love Boat.” He co-starred with Debbie
Reynolds on the ABC show “Aloha Paradise.” He spent the year of 1987 playing the role of
David Reed as part of the original cast on the CBS daytime soap opera “The Bold and
the Beautiful.” Stephen also worked regularly as a model and appeared in over fifty
TV commercials.
Shortridge enjoyed acting, but found painting much more creatively satisfying and explains:
“In acting a large part of the creative process had already taken place by the time I was
involved. In contrast, painting gives me complete control from start to finish, which is good and
bad. Good when the work is good...bad, when there’s no one else to blame for bad but me.”
“I think the most important aspect of creating is staying true to your heart and trying to share
that passion. I think too often we pursue knowledge rather than experience or relationship.
Knowledge never creates anything, but intimate experience of the heart does.”
“Romantic Impressionism” is what I do... I think the term best expresses how and why
I paint. I appreciate, or try to appreciate, all forms of art, but the one that first stirred me was
Impressionism. To me it was bold, and full of life and color. It was uninhibited and had a magic
quality to it. Rather than attempt to tell you something accurately, it just made you feel it!
That’s why I set out to interpret life through this style of art; it invites the viewer’s emotions
to take part.
Stephen Shortridge met his wife, Cathy, on the beach after surfing, in Newport Beach,
California. They married in 1976 and shared an adventurous life, experiencing career changes
from modeling and acting, to gift stores and art publishing. They’ve made homes in Manhattan,
Connecticut, and Southern California. For the last 13 years they’ve lived in the mountainous
region of Coeur d’Alene, Idaho. They have three children and two grandsons.
Two years ago Stephen and his wife Cathy added his studio to their home. On the best days, he
wakes early in the morning, to coffee, reading, and a sauna. Refreshed and focused, he does his
best painting before noon, enjoying music from the classics to rock, Worship to Bossanova.

Stephen Shortridge
“I thank God for everything, the least of which is to be creative, and to paraphrase a
famous line from Chariots of Fire, ‘...when I paint I feel His pleasure’.... this I certainly do!”
“If I could convince the world of one thing, it would be that God loves us... and the
second would be that you were created unique, to be uniquely creative.... We all have
something creatively unique to offer; if you say you are not creative, it’s just not true. It
would be more true to say you’re not creating.”
“I have such fun painting; that you sense and share in that is my hope. Now that I’m over
fifty I realize that for all these years I’ve been doing what I’ll do when I retire. For me as an
artist, to see beauty is my job. As I pursue to improve I see more and more beauty all the
time. It’s a pretty nice job.”
“In this painting all my senses are
filled, beautiful music, fragrant flowers,
and the peaceful setting to enjoy it all.”

Robert Pejman
Pejman was surrounded by art and culture from an early age. The son of an
operatic composer and a concert musician, he spent his early childhood in Vienna,
and then by way of England, moved to the United States in 1976. Pejman began
painting by the age of seven, and by the time he was sixteen he had won numerous
awards in group exhibitions.
In 1991 Pejman began his two-year formal studies with the world renowned
Russian artist Anatoly Ivanov. Later he attended the New York Art Students League
as well as furthering his studies with the Impressionist master Ovanes Berberian.
Among his instructors, Ivanov influenced Pejman the most by inspiring him to
use the techniques of old European masters. Employing these almost forgotten
techniques, Pejman skillfully blends them with impressionistic colors to achieve
a classical yet contemporary style. It is also through his unique arrangement and
depiction of the subject matters that he achieves a distinctive style. One can classify
his style as romantic realism, which he achieves by portraying beauty and solitude.

In his works, Pejman creates idyllic, tranquil worlds. “There are no people in my
paintings, so you can imagine yourself in the scenes,” explains the artist. “I don’t
simplify the shapes. You get into the cracks and feel the structures and the stones,”
he says, considering them to be marks of cultivated wisdom rather than declination.
There is romance in history, and Pejman reminds the viewer of classic beauty and
emotions that transcend time.
Since his first one-man exhibition in 1993, Pejman has received national and
international attention. His works can be found in many prestigious galleries and
corporate and private collections throughout the world. He has exhibited in
New York, Atlanta, Las Vegas, and other major cities.

Tuan
By its very nature, “sculpture” often suggests “mass”... if only in the weight of its
material – be it bronze, marble, or stone. To experience the bronze figurative sculpture of Vietnamese artist Tuan, however, is to experience the defiance of the nature
of bronze sculpture. Tuan glorifies the beauty of the human form with masterful
precision. However, the true uniqueness of his style is not in the physical expression
of human beauty, but in his ability to infuse physical “mass” with an almost divine
sense of weightlessness.
Tuan’s artwork radiates peacefulness and serenity through graceful lines and
rhythmic compositions so that while glorifying the human body, he at the same
time glorifies the human spirit, exalting the exhilarating experience of life. Tuan
infuses his sculpture with a celestial beauty that carries his human forms beyond
earthly existence and into the realm of the heavenly in a quiet celebration of life.
Though cast in bronze, his forms appear to be magically suspended like angels on
the wing.

“Equilibrium,” the first of Tuan’s sculptures to be released in limited edition through
Masterpiece Publishing, Inc. of Laguna Beach, is the ideal example of Tuan’s talent
for combining form with divine sensuality. His image of man and woman reflects
the beauty of love and life and form in a composition that defies gravity while
elevating humanity to angelic heights.

Tuan
The serenity and celebration reflected in his work comes in striking contradiction
to Tuan’s own past. Born in Vietnam in 1963, Tuan experienced the fall of Saigon
in 1975, survived a failed escape attempt from his native land in 1988, witnessed
the death of his close friend in the same escape attempt, and was then cast into
a concentration camp. Almost miraculously, he escaped the camp and fled to the
United States where he became captivated with sculpting. In 1995, Tuan received his
fine art degree from the Art Institute of Southern California in Laguna Beach.
Tuan has received the Gloria Medal from the National Sculpture Society (New
York), a medal designed by C. Paul Jennewein and bestowed upon a young artist in
Jennewein’s memory for a meritorious body of work as determined by the luminary
board of the society. He has been exhibited throughout Southern California and has
been commissioned for a number of public and private works, including a memorial
bust for the Nicole Brown Simpson Charitable Foundation in 1997.

Karen Stene
Karen Stene was born, raised, and educated in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada.
Having been born into a creative family that includes photographers, opera singers,
lecturers, and architects, her artistic talent was recognized and encouraged to
develop at an early age.
After graduating from the University of British Columbia, a career in modeling
fueled Karen’s love of travel and enabled her to pursue artistic studies at the Emily
Carr Art Institute in Vancouver and the Institute d’Allende School of Art in San
Miguel, Mexico.
An irrepressible wanderlust transports Karen Stene to the far reaches of the world
and her artistic talent carries the viewer along for the journey. “One witnesses an
excitement and depth of color when surrounded by a horizon of blue, an ocean of
silk in India and Thailand, or a vegetable market in Corsica.” Having traversed the
globe on a beautiful self-built sailboat, Karen finds inner peace on the sea where she
is mesmerized by the depth of color and ever-changing light that inspires sensations
that find a home on her lavish canvases.

François Fressinier
The delicate hand of François Fressinier is distinctly visible in his beautiful, sensitive
renderings of humanity. His subjects primarily consist of Gallo-Roman imagery
with embedded artifacts of the southwestern region of France.
Fressinier was born in Cognac, France, on August 4, 1968. His parents were portrait
photographers with businesses in Central Africa and the Charente Maritime region
of France. François was greatly influenced by their aesthetic teachings. His father
had a tremendous reverence for the paintings of the Old Masters and guided his son
into the exploration and creation of figurative and symbolic art. François studied
fine art at Ecole Brassartin Tours where he was exposed to the drawings, sketches,
and paintings of Rembrandt, Renoir, Courbet, Rubens, and Delaunay. Drawing,
painting, and photography have been an integral part of his life from the very
beginning.
Early in his youth, François was introduced to, and captivated by, many of the
world’s greatest historic places. Paris, Rome, Amsterdam, and London were all at his
doorstep. The peace and serenity of Roman ruins and Gothic churches are clearly
conveyed in his work.


François Fressinier
Over the last decade, François has refined his artistic style. It has been described as a
modern amalgam of Neo-Classical, Classical Renaissance, and Romanticism.
His work reflects the influence of Rubens and Titian through his focus on the
ethereal, romantic presence of sensuous women.
The contemporary manner and picturesque enchantment that are embodied in the
art of François Fressinier can be appreciated on many levels. The subtle beauty
of his female figures, the gentle lifestyle they portray, the timeless faces of the mythological world he depicts — each says as much about our own hopes and dreams
as about the ancient characters and events Fressinier portrays.
The men and women of Fressinier’s world are imbued with grace and beauty.
They are stripped of artifice, of class or ranking. All appear equal, in their work or at
leisure. Fressinier paints them all in their best light, and by doing so makes all
of us feel good because we see so clearly in these paintings what is good about
mankind and wondrous about life even in our fast-paced modern world. Fressinier’s
delicate and graceful paintings can be found in homes and private collections
throughout the United States, Japan and Mexico; his originals and limited edition
prints on canvas are now available at Fine Art Galleries around the nation.
“Each of my works of art holds a captured moment, a
detail of the infinitely diverse occurrences of life. It is left
to the observer to define the story that is portrayed.”
