Membertou’s All-Stars Shine at the Wallys!
Membertou’s youth were the pride
of the community this past weekend
at the 43rd Annual Wallace Bernard
Memorial Hockey Tournament.
Our young all-stars competed in
four-of-six championship games and
put on one of best showings in years,
winning one gold and three silver.
Bringing home the gold was
the Atom Team, coached by
Adrian Gould and Simon
Marshall. When the final
buzzer rang, Membertou
stood tall over Millbrook,
6-4. Both teams played an
excellent game that exhibited
tremendous sportsmanship.
Our Novice, Peewee and
Midget teams each brought
home silvers after playing
some of the most competitive
games of the tournament.
Membertou Novice came up
short against Millbrook in the
first championship game of
the evening, 10-4. It is always
a delight seeing the youngest
players lace up the skates and
having fun on the ice. Thanks
to coaches Craig and Edwin!
The next two championships
were both against Eskasoni,
with all teams leaving it all on
the ice. Final scores were 4-2
(Peewee) and 6-4 (Midget) in
two of the most competitive
games the Wallys have ever
seen. Cary Paul and Leon
Paul served as coaches, along
with Sonny Kabatay and
Storm Sack as managers.
MEMBERTOU NEWSLETTER

PARENTS AGAINST
DRUGS
Tips for Recovery:
Once you start a treatment program,
try these tips to make the road to
recovery less bumpy:
Tell your friends about your decision to
stop using drugs. Your true friends will
respect your decision. This might mean that you need to
find a new group of friends who will be 100% supportive.
Unless everyone decides to kick their drug habit at once,
you probably won’t be able to hang out with the friends you
did drugs with.
Ask your friends or family to be available when you need
them. You might need to call someone in the middle of the
night just to talk. If you’re going through a tough time, don’t
try to handle things on your own — accept the help your
family and friends offer.
Accept invitations only to events that you know won’t
involve drugs or alcohol. Going to the movies is probably
safe, but you may want to skip a Friday night party until
you’re feeling more secure. Plan activities that don’t involve
drugs. Go to the movies, try bowling, or take an art class
with a friend.
Have a plan about what you’ll do if you find yourself in a
SHIRLEY’S CORNER
Hello and welcome to my most favorite spot where anything could happen within a split second. You are about to
enter the realm of what makes me tick where imagination
comes to life as I see fit. This is the centre of my universe
the good ole noggin where my thoughts come to life to
entertain those who wish to be entertained. En a ways it
has been a spell since we last shared a good laugh, so feel
free to pull up a chair sit for a bit you know relax have a
tea or beer whatever your taste buds prefer.
Have you ever wondered about things that seem to disappear in your home with no explanation? Yeah well I think
I may have found the culprits and trust me when I say it
isn’t the Little People or the woodland nymphs. I found
under the microscope there are two types of these tiny
furry critters. Yeah those who are in full view taunting you
daring you to make the first move while there are those
who like the dark areas such as under beds dressers or
couches.
Now the Hiders are the ones to watch out for because
you never know when they will pop out ready to attack.
Why just last week I came in contact with one of these
creepy crawlers and so the battle began. Hold that thought
someone is at the door. I take a peek around the corner
hmm… never mind maybe he’ll go away if I pretend no
one is home.
A while later as I was sitting in my chair I sense someone
was watching me I look up and who should be peering in
but Buddie. Darn why can’t I get any work done without
•
Page 11
place with drugs or alcohol. The temptation
will be there sometimes, but if you know how
you’re going to handle it, you’ll be OK. Establish a plan with your parents, siblings, or other
supportive friends and adults so that if you
call home using a code, they’ll know that your
call is a signal you need a ride out of there.
Remind yourself that having an addiction
doesn’t make a person bad or weak. If you fall
back into old patterns (backslide) a bit, talk to
an adult as soon as possible. There’s nothing to be ashamed
about, but it’s important to get help soon so that all of the
hard work you put into your recovery is not lost.
If you’re worried about a friend who has an addiction, you
can use these tips to help him or her. For example, let your
friend know that you are available to talk or offer your support. If you notice a friend backsliding, talk about it openly
and ask what you can do to help.
If your friend is going back to drugs or drinking and won’t
accept your help, don’t be afraid to talk to a nonthreatening,
understanding adult, like your parent or school counselor.
It may seem like you’re ratting your friend out, but it’s the
best support you can offer.
Above all, offer a friend who’s battling an addiction lots of
encouragement and praise. It may seem corny, but hearing that you care is just the kind of motivation your friend
needs.
him dropping in grrr…. May as well let him in I thought
to myself as I opened the door. “Hello sistah,” greeted
Buddie. I just eyed him with the look and a hmph. “Oh I
see Gabbie is grabby again today,” he said as he sat on the
couch. I quickly ask what he wanted his reply, ‘Not a darn
thing.” “So why are you here?” I said rather annoyed by
his response. Just then a noise came from the basement
then I heard one of the dogs whimpering while the other
barked up a storm then Sookie the cat comes barreling up
the stairs her hair standing straighter than a tin soldier.
What the heck is going on down there? I yelled to Buddie
to go down and see what it is. He looks at me with terror in his eyes and shakes his head, “Nah hah! I ain’t goin
down there writer lady.” I started giggling, “Awe someone
is scared.” Buddie stares at me while shaking like a leaf on
a windy day. “I’m not scared I just don’t like dogs and they
don’t have a liken for me. That’s all.” “Yea right,” I said.
I leaned over to open the gate that lead down stairs to
my daughter’s unit. I grabbed Buddie and told him I’ll be
right behind him with a smirk on my face. Slowly step by
step we tiptoed down the stairs with trembling Buddie in
the lead and me a few steps behind making ready to make
a run for it. Just as we were about to enter the living room
Achilles jumps in front of Buddie and I turn to make a
mad dash for the stairs when all of a sudden I heard the
eeriest screetch coming from none other than Buddie…..
OMG!!!! What do I do!!! Go upstairs or see what is going
on….
What has happened to Buddie and Jaden???? Till next
time take care & live well
