Millbrook Hosts N.S. Mi’kmaw Summer
Games for first time in 33 years
Millbrook, NS - The 2015 Nova
Scotia Mi’kmaw Summer Games
were held in the Mi’kmaw community of Millbrook this past week
from August 17 – 23. This was the
first time the games were held in
Millbrook since 1982.
Christopher Googoo worked diligently to bring back another major
tradition, the Scroll Run. The Scroll
is carried from the previous host
community to the new one. This
year the scroll travelled 225 kilometres from Potlotek to Millbrook.
Googoo secured 32 runners that
all helped carry the scroll. Membertou had eight individuals who
took part in the scroll run. They
included: Janice Googoo, Sheldon
Googoo, Peter Googoo, Sheldon
Googoo Jr., Tyrell Isaac, Darren
Sylvester, Barbara Sylvester and
Jennifer Ginnish. Sheldon Googoo
took part in the original scroll run
in 1982. Plans are already in the
works for the 2016 scroll run from
Millbrook to Membertou.
eant. She did an amazing job, spoke
well, displayed confidence and was
a true role model for youth. Way to
go, Montana! Membertou is very
proud of you.
Millbrook did a fantastic job in
accommodating all Mi’kmaw communities and organizing the games.
Thousands of meals were provided
to all athletes over the week. Bracelets were given to athletes that also
provided a discount to many places
in the town of Truro. The week
was full of entertainment nightly.
Concerts included Donna’s Boy,
with Membertou’s very own Glen
Gould, City Natives, Joey Stylez
and Carson Grey, Sugar Bomb, The
Relatives, Leonard Sumner and
Crystal Shawanda. Friday night
festivities included a Pyromusical
Display that incorporated fireworks
being set off to music.
Medal ceremonies were held every
night. For a full list of Membertou
medal winners, go to page 10.

NOTICE TO COMMUNITY REGARDING MEMBERTOU’S ANIMAL CONTROL BY-LAW
Membertou has had an Animal Control By-Law in place for several years. This by-law was passed out of concern for the safety of our community members, and children in particular. Some of the highlights of the by-law
include a ban on pitbulls and penalties for dog owners who allow their dogs to roam free. There has been an
increase in complaints of dogs roaming throughout the community and so we have asked the SPCA to step up
their patrols. If you see a dog on the loose, please call the SPCA at (902)539-7722. It is an automated phone system so please listen to the options. Pressing “1” will connect you to an animal control by-law officer.
We have also introduced a tag system which will allow us and the SPCA to track dogs and better allow us to
enforce the ban on pitbulls. It can also help re-unite lost or roaming dogs with their owners. The by-law calls for
the collection of a fee for the tags but the Council has decided to waive the fee with the hope of getting as many
dogs registered as possible. We will be contacting you in the coming weeks to have your dogs registered. If you
wish to have your registered now, you can contact Deanna Joe at the Band Office.
We ask all dog owners to mindful of their obligations and to help keep Membertou a safe community.
NOTICE TO COMMUNITY REGARDING THE NEWLY ENACTED
MEMBERTOU SWIMMING POOL BY-LAW: (Membertou Band Code No. 2015-1)
The Council has recently passed a by-law requiring swimming pools of a certain depth to be fully enclosed
by a fence. The primary purpose of this by-law is ensure the safety of small children who are vulnerable to
the dangers of unsupervised and unenclosed pools.
The new by-law refers to all outdoor swimming pools that are two (2) feet or more in height. If you own a
swimming pool that is this size, or deeper, you are obligated to provide a fence with a gate that fully surrounds the swimming pool. The fence must be a minimum of five (5) feet in height.
This by-law shall be administered by the Safety Coordinator who may enlist the assistance of an Officer of
the Cape Breton Regional Police Services to enforce it.
Violation of this by-law is an offence and is liable on summary conviction to a fine of not more than
$1,000.00 or to imprisonment for a term of 30 days, or both.
The Membertou Swimming Pool By-law was enacted in March 2015 and applies to all Membertou residents and businesses.

JOB OPPORTUNITIES IN MEMBERTOU
With the future commercial projects underway in the
community, STAIRS want to ensure that our people
have the opportunity to benefit in this process.
This major construction will be calling on many different trades people and I would like to have an inventory
o f the community members that can fill these roles.
Our goal is to utilize our own people so our community will profit from this. There is a need for construction
workers with roofing experience.
We will be taking names of Membertou Band members
who are interested in working on the commercial jobs.
The goal is to have a list of qualified contractors, journeymen, apprentices and community members eager
to start at entry level (laborers).
To be added to our list, you can come in to see Candice
Sappier or Anna Marshall in the Social Department.
Please have all the necessary paperwork such as resume
(optional), qualifications and tickets.
