Pony Bird’s Western-themed Taste Never Tasted Better! Spring 2015 Also featured in this issue: • DeSoto Groundbreaking • Capital Campaign Update • Valentine’s Dance ...and more! Ann Ferguson of the Ferguson Family Foundation, Gourmet Sponsor of Pony Bird’s Great Taste, with her son, Bobby. Letter from the President Dear Friends, Spring brings new life and growth. Pony Bird is blossoming as we embark on the groundbreaking phase of our “Spreads Its Wings” capital project. For more than two years we have been cultivating the seeds of this project to ensure its success. We look forward to celebrating with the community on Friday, April 24th to break ground and plant the seeds of continued growth. The expansion of services will allow more individuals to experience the Pony Bird difference, while ensuring our loved ones are appropriately supported in their homes. The number of respite hours that we will be able to provide will significantly increase, which will bring relief to families in Jefferson, St. Louis and surrounding counties. As with all successful gardens it takes love, thoughtful care and attention to detail to see success. The larger our garden grows, the more support we will need from our Pony Bird family. Will you help us till the soil by making a contribution to the Capital Campaign? Donations of all sizes can help provide funds for items like specialized lifts, beds and the recreational equipment that is needed to support the service expansion. For larger contributors, naming rights for portions of the new homes are available. Call Cheryl Hughey at 636-797-8206 to receive your personalized donation packet. To stay up-to-date on our progress visit our website www.ponybird.org or follow us on Facebook and Twitter-ponybirdblue. Thank you for helping us grow! Warmest Regards, Sara Sucharski President & CEO Cover photo: Ted Howell Thanks to Ted and Nancy Howell for volunteering at so many of the Pony Bird events. Ted’s photos grace many of our covers and Pony Pages. We appreciate the visual contribution to our stories. 2 Pony Bird, Inc. Announces DeSoto Groundbreaking Pony Bird Inc. will break ground on April 24, 2015 to celebrate the expansion of their DeSoto homes. The event at 1525 Villa Drive in DeSoto, Mo., is scheduled from 3-5 p.m. with the groundbreaking ceremony at 4 p.m. The new building will provide new living quarters for several individuals currently living in Mapaville. This 1.9 million dollar project is partially funded by a generous $1 million dollar grant from the Jefferson Memorial Community Foundation and Pony Bird’s “Spreads Its Wings” capital campaign that is still underway. “Providing respite services to the St. Louis and Jefferson county communities will give families struggling with the care of a loved one a chance to rejuvenate themselves,” said Sara Sucharski, Pony Bird President and CEO. Since 1977, Pony Bird has been providing a family atmosphere for non-ambulatory individuals with severe to profound physical and mental disabilities with clients in St. Louis, St. Charles and Jefferson counties. From the personalized décor of bedrooms to relaxing recliners in the living and programming areas, Pony Bird cares for individuals just like a family would in an atmosphere of love, laughter and compassion. Individuals enjoy learning, activities, community outings and therapy services to create their highest possible quality of life. Members of the community and the media are invited to attend the groundbreaking ceremony on April 24 by sending an RSVP to [email protected]. Capital CampaignUpdate The recent St. Louis Post-Dispatch article highlighted the expansion of services in our DeSoto location. Once the new homes are completed, Pony Bird will be able to provide over 20,000 hours of respite services to families with loved ones that are in wheelchairs and may have significant intellectual challenges. Our approach to caring for non-ambulatory individuals is based on a concept of respect and love. We understand that an individual has a choice as to where they’d like live and that being surrounded by people that care about your future makes the challenges of daily living easier. However, the adaptive equipment that is needed to care for those with limited range of motion is expensive. Equipping one bedroom with a specialized bed and lift can cost up to $15,000. Although we do own some equipment and/or grants to cover some additional costs, it is not enough. It can be difficult to visualize the needs our individuals encounter until you spend time with us. If you have not visited a Pony Bird home, we’d like to share a tour of our homes with you. Please call our development department at 636.797.8206 to schedule your visit to Pony Bird and/or to learn more about donating to our Capital Campaign. Pony Bird’s Great Taste Never Tasted So Good! Dancing & Music Abound at the Pony Bird’s Valentine’s Day Party Smiles were bountiful during the Valentine’s Day dance that was held on February 13th in Mapaville. With their favorite music and staff as dancing partners, it was a day when everyone had a chance to feel like royalty. As you can see from one of our pictures, we were also honored to have a gorgeous princess in attendance at our party. We have an assortment of engaging opportunities planned for our individuals. If you would like to volunteer at one of our upcoming Pony Bird activities, please contact [email protected]. You can choose how much time you’d like to spend with us. No extensive commitment is required from Pony Bird volunteers. If you want to have fun, while enriching the lives of the individuals in our homes, please contact us. During January and February, Pony Bird supporters donated over $3,000 to the 2015 Give Your Heart campaign. This was an increase of more than 300% from 2014. The hearts that were displayed in the guest reception area of Mapaville were a beautiful example of loving stewardship. President and CEO Sara Sucharski wrote about the need to tend to the Pony Bird garden in this month’s letter (located on the inside page of this newsletter). From parents to staff, we are all stewards of our Pony Bird family. Your donations to the Give Your Heart campaign are valuable seeds that will enhance the Pony Bird mission to provide quality care to non-ambulatory persons of all ages with significant intellectual and physical disabilities.
