GENERAL INFORMATION
Welcome in the Video Library of the 2008 Holland Film Meeting.
The Video Library is the place to bring recent films from the Benelux to the attention
of buyers, commissioning editors, festival directors and sales agents. It presents a
variety of recent Benelux Film- and TV productions, Netherlands Film Festival- and
special programme selections, available for screening in one of the 20 screening
booths.
Every professional visitor receives a catalogue, which lists approximately 180 titles.
These titles include especially films that were selected for one of the 2008 Netherlands
Film Festival programs. The festival competition films are marked by the NFF logo in
the catalogue. Besides, we offer this year a great amount of student films. Most of the
available titles are English subtitled or English spoken.
By looking through the films of the catalogue, which can only be obtained from the
Video Library-desk in “De Boerderij” room, at the Karel V Hotel, you can decide which
films you would like to see.
Please write down your selection on the questionnaire available at the video-library
desk. (A maximum of three titles each time). After handing in this form and your
festival badge at the desk, you will be given the requested title(s). On returning the
title(s) you will get your badge back.
For the guests of the Holland Film Meeting, there is a computer available in the
Industry Office, the room next to the Video Library, with internet access.
The Video Library is open daily between 9 am and 9 pm
(Except on Saturday Sept. 27: it will close at 7:30 pm and on the closing day Monday
Oct. 1: it will close at 4 pm.)
Fred de Haas and Jana Hardt and their staff will be present during the Holland Film
Meeting to assist you.
We wish you an enjoyable and inspiring stay at the Video Library and hope that you
will find the films that you are looking for, and will be surprised by the professional
qualities of the available product.

The Netherlands 2007
Original language: Dutch
English video available
Genre: Drama
Length: 35'

Director: Manon Bovenkerk

Genre: Animation
Length: 9'
Personal ode to the cinema of the 1960s and to
Monica Vitti, the Italian actress who broke
through in that era. She is represented in blackand-white
drawings.
Black-and-white
photographs show modernistic architecture.
Although the film is only composed of still
images, character and environment merge
miraculously owing to the moving film camera,
which alternately glides across the drawings
and photographs.

My Dear Grandma
Video no. 266
Director: Marta Abad Blay
The Netherlands 2008
Original language: no dialogue
Genre: Animation
Length: 5'
Grandma is having a rough time. She runs back
and forth as a drudge between a crying baby, his
mother who is on the phone (and wants
grandma to refill her coffee) and his father who
reads the paper (and continually needs a light).
Nobody says anything, but grandma is driven
up the wall by the sounds and dreams of a quiet
summer's day. In partly coloured black-andwhite drawings, this short animation shows the
essence of what psychologists call the 'grandmaas-a-slave-syndrome'.

On 8 May 1885, a 22-year-old woman jumped
from the very tall Clifton Suspension Bridge
near Brighton. Her suicide attempt failed
because the wind got a hold of her clothes and
she landed in the relatively soft mud beside the

The filmmaker unfolds this story with the help

Genre: Drama
Length: 85'
Lying is Youssef's second nature and Rick,
manager of an agency dealing in alibis, instantly
recognises this gift. Using the most cunning
tricks and a huge arsenal of clothes and
accessories, Rick and his associates enable
adulterers and other sly dogs to do whatever
they please, undisturbed. It all seems one big
game and Youssef feels like a fish in water.
Until he falls in love with waitress Andrea, who
hates liars. When he also has to help Rick in his
adultery, it becomes too personal for him and
things get out of hand. After a fierce fight
between him and his boss, the two are arrested.
This is where this romantic comedy, set against
sunny Amsterdam, begins. Youssef describes
everything
that
preceded
during
his
interrogation. Director Johan Nijenhuis has
chosen an unreliable narrator. And even though
the police officers that listen to Youssef's story
do not believe the first thing about it, they cling

mayhem among the inhabitants of downtown
Amsterdam. From crown prince Valentijn to
shopping mall assistant Kiki, from pool
attendant Victor to divorced mother Klaasje,
but also their children, parents and other
relatives: everybody learns something about
themselves in this unusual St. Nicholas week
and gets caught up in the (im)possibilities of
love. Director Joram Lürsen brings all
vicissitudes to a happy conclusion with an
accurate eye for timing, without forgetting that
love often has a melancholic edge.

Blind Date
Video no. 213
Director: Stanley Tucci
USA 2008
Original language: English
English video available
Genre: Drama
Length: 83'
The second of three American remakes of films
by deceased Dutch director Theo van Gogh,
following “Interview” in 2007 (directed by Steve
Buscemi) and preceding “1-900” (director John
Turturro). In “Blind Date”, a clumsy magician
and his wife repeatedly pretend they have a
blind date with each other to revive their
relationship. Using personal ads, which act as
punctuation between the various scenes, they
choose different roles. They always meet in the
conjurer's theatre, where their awkward
conversations soon go off the rails. They do not
know how to cope with the loss of their
daughter, who was killed in an accident and
now comments on the events in the voice-over.
Patricia Clarkson plays the role that was
originally performed by Renée Fokker; director
Stanley Tucci plays the male lead, which in the
original version was played by Peer Mascini who has a supporting role here, beside people
like Georgina Verbaan and Thijs Römer.

Genre: Drama
Length: 95'
The plot of this equable thriller is based on true
events. The hot summer of 1960 is rather
uneventful for the two bored rich man's sons
Arnout and Victor, until they, along with their
docile classmate Simon, decide to give shelter to
petty thief Ronnie in the attic of their father's
capital villa. Initially, the schoolboys consider
hiding Ronnie a nice pastime, but as summer
progresses, the boy becomes an ever greater
nuisance and a millstone around their necks.
What is more, their father tells them the family
is going on a holiday to the Italian isle of Capri.
The three boys convene and without wasting
too many words agree on a gruesome solution.
This brings the story to its ending, but tempo
and setting do not change: the summer remains
sunny, the pinball machine serves its purpose
and in the shade the friends play some hip
songs.

In

Circus Harlekino
experiences a turbulent summer. Dicky and her
brother-in-law Willy are in a pretty kettle of
fish. Dicky's sister has passed on and left little
Timo behind. Dicky raises Timo as if it were her
own child, but father Willy and his family had
rather seen him put up in a boarding school.
Dicky has no rights, so she has to stand by and
watch how Willy makes one wrong choice after
the other and everybody keeps meddling.
Meanwhile, she starts entertaining amorous
feelings for tent builder Tarek.
Shot in documentary style, this drama deals
with complicated mutual relationships in an
unusual environment. Played by real circus
performers, the story portrays life in a
contemporary circus, onstage and offstage.
From knife throwers to a lama between white
caravans and a pack of dogs that is taken out in
pouring rain. With synthesizer music and
songs, three German-speaking musicians from
the circus tell the background story of the
leading characters.

Original language: Dutch, Arabic

Genre: Youthfilm
Length: 90'
In the film sequel to the successful TV series,
bosom friends Dunya and Desie find themselves
at a crossroads in their lives. The cheerful
design of the credits still shows the young girls'
carefree world. But they have finished high
school now and have to decide how to organise
their future lives. Their friendship is under fire
as a result of the objections that Dunya's
Moroccan parents have to the libertine Desie,
but also due to big dilemmas: Dunya is told that
a meeting has been arranged in Morocco with a
future husband and Desie turns out to be
pregnant - the most obvious action is an
abortion. The two friends find each other again
in Morocco and their joint trip teaches them a
lot about the values of friendship and family, as
well as respect for the goals in life the girls
choose for themselves. The roles in this comic
and touching road movie are played by the
same actors as in the series: Maryam Hassouni
and Eva van de Wijdeven.

Length: 90'
Fifteen years after making a film about Africa,
the successful but deeply cynical director of
commercials Frank Meutstege is honoured in,
sure enough, Africa. He hates the continent that
he consistently calls 'Mafrica' and tries to get
away from it as soon as possible - also because
his future bride is waiting for him on a safer
continent. But things work out differently. A
fifteen-year-old African girl claims to be Frank's
daughter. She begs him to follow her to her
mother's hut, where he shot the film years ago.
He grudgingly follows her on a dangerous
journey across the country. Frank is robbed of
his things ('Strengthening bias here, mate!'),
but also gets acquainted with his potential
daughter and a warmer side of himself.
In this road movie, the eternal cynic is won over
by the Africans he initially despised. He scatters
around prejudice so unsparingly that it becomes
hilarious. The gorgeous scenery and cheerful
African music contribute to this spiteful
character's lessons of life.

Genre: Drama
Length: 90'
On stage, Anne shines in her next character
part, but her private life looks less prosperous.
She is in heavy weather financially, and she has
a hard time getting older and stomaching her
ex-husband's relationship with a perfect young
woman. Will Anne have to sell her houseboat
that holds tons of personal memories? A new,
dull accountant tries to straighten out her
bookkeeping. He gets fascinated with Anne's
free attitude to life and in turn she feels a
certain appreciation for him. For both people,
the confrontation eventually has positive
repercussions on their bogged down lives.
“Tiramisu” is a subtle tragicomedy, driven by
the actors' performances. The soft clash
between the bookkeeper and the actress is
represented in sharp detail. The film is a plea
against narrow prejudice, without lapsing into
clichés or mawkishness.

It is 1986. In the Netherlands, the Indonesian
grandma Em, the daughter of a German man
and a Javanese mother, is on her deathbed. But
grandma Em does not want to leave before
having spoken to her American granddaughter
Barbie about some unsolved family mysteries.
In 1945, after the Japanese occupation, freedom
fighters declared Indonesia independent. In the
following years, many people emigrated from
the former Dutch colony to the Netherlands.
Most of them had never been here. Those
unable to settle in went to other countries, like
the US. Such as Buddy, grandma Em's son and
Barbie's father.
Barbie, invariably with a cigarette in her mouth
and a guitar on her back, comes to Holland to
see her grandma, but other relatives want to
prevent their meeting. All family members have
their individual secrets. During Barbie's
complicated search for grandma Em, we hear
Barbie's sensitive guitar songs. The film also
portrays the 1970s and 1980s, presented in

A small village is located in a snow-covered

activities in and around the house attain a
sensual charge, like the voluptuous kneading

naturally blend with the plain registration of the

Length: 85'
When she is asked in school: 'What do you want
to be?', she answers: 'Simple. Katia's sister.'
This is how the young girl sees herself and is
seen by others; we never hear her own name.
We watch her life from her perspective; the
camera keeps close to her and follows her
around. In the apartment where she lives with
her mother, who works as a prostitute, her elder
sister Katia and her increasingly absent-minded
grandma, and in the street, where evangelist
John is the only one who really devotes time to
her. Her family comes from Russia and often
plays thunderous Russian music. She prefers to
listen to Dutch children's pop music, while she
tidies up and cleans the house, discreetly
keeping the household going. Meanwhile, her
mother finds a new boyfriend somewhere and
Katia thinks she can make some easy money by
stripping - she even takes her little sister to the

she likes best is huddle together with Katia in

Aan ons den arbeid
Ours is the Labour
Video no. 189
Director: Jeroen van Bergeijk
The Netherlands 2008
Original language: Dutch, Berber
English video available
Genre: Documentary
Length: 49'
In the 1970s most of the Dutch population still
ate rusk—a peculiar toast-like bread—for
breakfast. Rusk was produced at Hooimeijer's
in Barendrecht. The factory needed workers—a
lot of them. The Dutch wouldn’t do such work
anymore, but luckily the first Moroccan “guest
workers” arrived.
That first generation of Moroccans is now
retiring. How do they look back on their lives in
The Netherlands? With that question in mind,
Van Bergeijk sought out a number of
Moroccans who had worked for decades at the
baker, where his father was managing director.
Ours Is the Labour is a melancholy portrait of
the 1970s, when Third World immigrants were
still warmly welcomed, as well as an oral history
of the mores of the shop floor. In the now
abandoned rusk factory, Van Bergeijk has his
father, the Moroccan workers, and their Dutch
supervisors tell how things were in those days.
Young, illiterate Moroccans did the heavy, dirty
work in the factory. “I used to say that I wished
I had only Moroccans working for me,” says a
former supervisor. Gradually things changed,
and as they got older the heavy work took its
toll. Many ended up on disability. Automation
made others redundant.

Jews forced to convert to Catholicism after the
expulsion from Spain in 1492 and the forced
conversion in Portugal.

Camera's voor de onzichtbaren
Cameras for the Invisible Ones
Video no. 705
Director: Mark Verkerk
The Netherlands 2008
Original language: Dutch, English, Karen
English video available
Genre: Documentary
Length: 57'
Karin Kuiper, widow of the celebrated Dutch
author Karel Glastra van Loon, travels to the
Thai-Burma border to continue his work of
supporting Burma’s forgotten refugees. On July
1, 2005, Karel Glastra van Loon, one of the
Netherlands’ most acclaimed authors, died
tragically of a brain tumour. Two and a half
years earlier, Karel and his young family had
spent 3 months in the small frontier town of
Mae Sot, on Thailand’s western border with
Burma, researching what turned out to be, his
last novel, ‘The Invisible Ones’. The novel was
the first in a project initiated by the
Netherlands Refugee Foundation to link Dutch
writers with forgotten refugee groups. And
although Karel managed to finish his book
before he died, his further plans to provide
refugees with digital cameras were left
unrealised. In March 2008, Karin returns to
Mae Sot determined to realise Karel’s plan.
Along the way she retraces the steps he took
researching ‘The Invisible Ones’. The film
weaves these emotional scenes, together with
radio broadcasts recorded by Karel during his
stay, and passages from his book, to provide a
powerful insight into the complex issues facing
the Burmese people.

Carneval in Mestreech 't sjoenste leedsje
Carnival in Maastricht
Video no. 248
Director: Paula Rennings
The Netherlands 2008
Original language: Dutch (dialect)
English video available
Genre: Documentary
Length: 52'
Carnival in Maastricht is serious business. This
also holds true for the carnival songs. Annie van
Loo, the first female writer of native Maastricht
songs, explains what a good song is made of,
while participants in the colourful parade say
what their 'sjoenste leedsje' (favourite song) is.
In a poll held a few years ago by “De
Limburger” daily, 'Karneval in Mestreech' from
1947 was pronounced the best all-time song.
But also songs with titles like 'Jij bent mijn
nichtje', 'Mijn fietsje' and 'Ik heb iets aan mijn
trommeltje', are popular. Besides Van Loo,
other prominent representatives of the carnival,
like the Master of Ceremonies and the chairman
of the Music Committee, talk about the
traditions of carnival and how they are
currently under pressure under the influence of
the multicultural society. Interviews alternate
with gaudy images of the procession.

Come Back Kate
Video no. 46
Director: Quirine Racké, Helena Muskens
The Netherlands 2007
Original language: English
English video available
Genre: Documentary
Length: 53'
In 1993, after a career spanning fifteen years,
Kate Bush permanently distanced herself from
her pop star status. She withdrew to an isle in
the Thames and severed all contact. Still, she
lives on in the minds of countless admirers.
The mosaic documentary “Come Back Kate”,
constructed from small portraits of Bush fans,
gives a face to this adoration. Julie performs a
tribute act and Melanie arranges listening
sessions in Death Valley. Fred averted his
tendency to stalk Bush by writing a biography,
which reveals forefather Henry Bush's bizarre
cause of death. Peter, professor of philosophy,
received a most charming reaction after
pointing out a spelling mistake in one of Bush's
lyrics, 'and that broke the spell'. Human contact
broke the charm of the mythical figure. Cynthia
does not call herself a 'Kate fan' but a 'Kate
fanatic'. When she was diagnosed with cancer,
she was afriad she would never be able to hear a
new Bush album again. But in late 2005, she
got well and Bush broke a twelve-year silence
with her new double album “Aerial”.

De huizen van Hristina
The Houses of Hristina
Video no. 48
Director: Suzanne Raes
The Netherlands 2007
Original language: Dutch, English, Bulgarian
English video available
Genre: Documentary
Length: 50'
She works there, but does not feel at home.
Bulgarian Hristina, just thirty, does cleaning
work in Amsterdam canal-side houses. The
communication with the occupants takes place
through well-meant but impersonal notes, in
which people put questions about Hristina's
well-being and directions concerning her
domestic tasks. The personal interest is not
sincere, Hristina realises. Her patrons, who
prefer not to meet her when coming home, are
only interested in efficient and cheap work.
Although the residents' presence is tangible,
Hristina feels desolate and lonely. In the film,
her customers only appear as shadows.
To do something she is passionate about,
Hristina is permitted to take artistic pictures in
the houses she works at. To observe is her role
in life, she imagines. “De huizen van Hristina” is
the symbolic story of an immigrant who, despite
doing her share, does not really belong.

Dear Oprah: Non-voting America's Wildest Dream
Video no. 465
Director: Kasper Verkaik
The Netherlands 2008
Original language: Dutch, English
Genre: Documentary
Length: 52'
The turnout at American elections is
traditionally one of the lowest in the world:
around sixty percent. Filmmaker Kasper
Verkaik wants to know why. He travels all over
the United States, looking for the motives of
non-voters. They vary from indifference and
lack of trust to more practical arguments: in
some poor neighbourhoods, it is made very
hard for people to vote. Verkaik also meets the
man who set up an organisation to urge TV icon
Oprah Winfrey to stand for office. She
responded she does not want to get involved in
politics, but nonetheless Verkaik sees an
important task for Oprah. She could convince
her viewers to register to vote. Dear Oprah is
not only an investigative road movie (with an
important part for the occasionally unreliable
camper), but also a plea, a letter in sound and
image, to one of America's leading opinion
makers.

Dancing on the edge of the volcano
Video no. 218
Director: Simon Haringa
The Netherlands 2008
Original language: Dutch, Frisian, English
English video available
Genre: Documentary
Length: 55'
The Frisian filmmaker Simon Haringa looks
back on Queen's Birthday 1986 with a group of
gay men. It was a time when Amsterdam was
considered the gay capital of the world. True to
tradition, the international gay scene gathered
along the Amstel river to dance and drink
exuberantly. The video footage of the men,
often clothed in leather, is a wonderful trip
down memory lane. 'Look at those big
moustaches!' But it is not just a case of pure
nostalgia. After all, this era was not as cheerful
as it seems. One third of the men captured in
the video eventually died of the consequences of
AIDS. The threat of the 'mysterious disease' lay
like a veil over the partying masses. The careless
years of emancipation and free love turned into
a period that was characterised by uncertainty,
panic and death. Candidly, the men talk about
their first confrontation with the affliction,
about the question whether one should do a test
or not, about being HIV-positive, about dancing
on the volcano.

Director: Catherine van Campen
The Netherlands 2008
Original language: Dutch

Genre: Documentary
Length: 54'
A greatly magnified terminator seed floats
across the screen, against a black background.
The seed owes its name to the DNA
manipulation which makes it sterile after
flowering only once. If master grower Ruurd
Walrecht had not spent his entire life
preserving traditional plant species, we would
no longer have any knowledge of this
terminator seed. Nor of eternal mash, a rare
perennial cabbage species. Walrecht fought for
his 'Primeval Field' for forty years, but recently
he suddenly abandoned his life's work and
moved to Sweden, leaving kindred stay-behinds
baffled. Still cherishing Walrecht's ideals, these
people tell about the mythical grower, while
being filmed in their peaceful, harmonious
existence in the country as nomads or so-called
crofters. On the voice-over, Walrecht himself
talks about his work and the vital importance of
the genetic wealth of plants for future food
supplies. With abundant visual attention for
obscure vegetables.

Director: Heddy Honigmann
The Netherlands 2007
Original language: Dutch, French
English video available
Genre: Documentary
Length: 53'
Five girls, from various social strata and
different age groups, with one striking
denominator: to them, the Internet is almost
more important than the real world. Heddy
Honigmann introduces each girl via the
Internet screen where they have the courage to
be themselves. Next, we see the girls in their
real environment and we hear their poignant
stories: Saskia is pestered, Sanne is depressed,
Samantha has been raped, Zineb has lost the
chance of a residence permit and Inge lost her
mother to breast cancer. On the Internet, they
find people who make them feel secure, they
play online games, often violent ones, they chat
with distant relatives or they help other people.
Filmmaker Heddy Honigmann interviews the
girls and captures their meetings - virtual and
real - with Internet friends. This yields touching
scenes, like when Sarah will shortly see her chat
friend for the first time, an event that has been
giving her the jitters for weeks. The filmmaker
manages to make the girls drop their guard,
something they usually only do in the seclusion
of the digital world.

Far Away Future
Video no. 408
Director: Frank Dorren
The Netherlands 2008
Original language: Himba
English video available
Genre: Documentary
Length: 34'
Teenage girls Nana and Gaja live in northern
Namibia, in Kaokoland. Their tribe lives in
barren conditions in an arid landscape.
Traditional clothing and ancient traditions are
considered of paramount importance. But the
modern era has arrived here, too, exemplified
by photographing tourists and numerous tribe
members who move to the city.
The two friends see different futures for
themselves. Nana wants to tend goats, start a
family and faithfully wait for her father to
return from the city. Nana: 'Here in the village I
can become a woman. I don't have to do
anything for it, it just happens. I only have to
wait.'
Gaja wants to become happy in the city. And
become a nurse, or a saleswoman. It seems to
be really easy over there; becoming happy.
Gaja: 'The city is like the rest of the world. The
people that go there stay there. In the city, I can
be whatever I want.'
While we follow the girls and the villagers in
their daily lives, Gaja and Nana poetically
describe their future and their ideas of
happiness.

Queer
Video no. 59
Director: Arthur Bueno, Rob de Vries
The Netherlands 2007
Original language: Dutch
English video available
Genre: Documentary
Length: 50'
As a young man, Rob de Vries displayed an
early interest in filmmaking with his 8mm
camera, and in male love. He preferred this type
of love to the conventional straight life he led in
his marriage. In the late seventies, he left
Rotterdam for the then dazzling city of
Amsterdam, where the young gay movement
grew explosively. Along with all sorts of artists
and militant gays, he travelled across the
country to protest against homophobia. And he
captured everything on film. Sometimes in a
documentary style, sometimes he opted for
fiction, as in his short films about coming out or
the queer-bashing theme.
Incorporating this historical footage and his
own stories, De Vries leads us through a
fascinating private life, portraying an important
period in gay emancipation in the seventies and
eighties, a time when people in the Netherlands
were still only mildly tolerant towards gays. The
film starts with De Vries' first steps in cinema
(atmospheric images of a Rotterdam bridge in
the style of Joris Ivens), followed by his own
wedding film and images of performances by
artists with colourful names like Het Valse
Nichtenkoor and Tedje en de flikkers.

Hoger dan de Kuip
In the Shadow of a Mosque
Video no. 185
Director: Ingeborg Jansen
The Netherlands 2008
Original language: Dutch, Turkish, Moroccan
English video available
Genre: Documentary
Length: 50'
'Everybody has a right to his own religion and
place of worship, but this goes too far', a
Feyenoord fan thinks, who moved to the south
side of the city for love of his team. 'We have
only one temple by the Meuse, and that is De
Kuip.'
This soccer temple will soon meet with
competition, because at a stone's throw from
the Feyenoord stadium the largest mosque of
Europe is under construction. Not everyone is
happy with it. Customers at the ladies'
hairdresser's discuss the erection of the mosque
extensively. Some feel strongly about it, others
treat it light-heartedly. In the street, local
politicians distribute leaflets that make a stand
against the islamisation of Holland. Muslim
immigrants, on the other hand, look forward to
the completion of the mosque.
“Hoger dan De Kuip” presents a profile of the
inhabitants of a Rotterdam working-class
district, where many different cultures live next
to each other, without having any real contact.
Humour is not lacking, though. An elderly
woman is not afraid of the inevitable rise of
Islam: 'I'll just put on a headscarf, too. That will
save me a trip to the hairdresser's.'

Inside Burma
Video no. 296
Director: Karin Junger
The Netherlands 2008
Original language: Burmese, Dutch
English video available
Genre: Documentary
Length: 54'
In September 2007, Buddhist monks in Burma
rose up against the junta. The peaceful protests
were brutally crushed and the country was
closed to the press. Fascinated by the monks
and their resistance, filmmaker Karin Junger
and camerawoman Birgit Hillenius traverse this
country 'that doesn't want to be filmed.'
Officially, monks are not allowed to speak out
on political issues, but now they consider it
their moral duty. 'We feel the urge to testify to
what is really happening', Sayadaw U Kovida
comments from New York. He had to flee his
native country because he refused to accept
food from a soldier. By refusing gifts, Buddhist
monks demonstrate they reject the regime. This
causes a dilemma for the junta. The monks are
held in high regard, which makes it hard to
openly punish them. They are punished
nonetheless. They are captured, forced to work
or killed. This makes the Burmese that talk to
Junger and do have the courage to express
criticism all the more impressive.

Ivo, de ongeautoriseerde biografie van een gorilla
Ivo, The Unauthorized Biography of a Zoo Gorilla
Video no. 412
Director: Annick van Wijk
The Netherlands 2007
Original language: Dutch, German, Spanish
English video available
Genre: Documentary
Length: 53'
The situation is precarious for the number of
gorillas living in the wild worldwide. To
preserve the species from becoming extinct, all
hope is placed in the reproduction of congeners
living in zoos. In Europe, there are more than
four hundred of the latter, a number the zoos
hope to maintain. Ivo is one of the males
scheduled to produce offspring.
As a baby, his mother rejected him in Munich,
which is why a zookeeper took care of him at
her home in the first weeks. After Munich, he
stayed in zoos in Tenerife, Amsterdam and
Berlin. Ivo never produced any progeny. He did
collect hordes of female fans, who follow him
around Europe, filming and drawing him.
This biopic examines the track record of a
gorilla that has a hard time settling in with his
own species. Zookeeper Reimon tries his best to
put Ivo 'to work'. Meanwhile, we also get to
know his fans and caretakers in the four zoos
where Ivo stayed over the past years. Together
with their stories, photographs, archive and
recent footage of Ivo and his (female) admirers
present an intriguing portrait.

Jan Mesdag zingt Brel
Jan Mesdag sings Brel
Video no. 223
Director: Emma Westermann
The Netherlands 2008
Original language: Dutch, English
English video available
Genre: Documentary
Length: 59'
The career of singer and entertainer Jan
Mesdag was on a rollercoaster in the mid1980s. He divided his time between the theatres
of New York - his great love - and Amsterdam.
In the Netherlands, he performed in all major
venues and sang with well-known artists. He
even secured a role in the musical Cats. But
then he fell ill. Infected with HIV, which was
still largely a mystery back then. There was no
treatment for the disease yet, and the young
Mesdag was heading for a certain death. He had
one last wish: to sing the songs of Jacques Brel.
Mesdag: 'The people around me always said you
can't touch Brel.' But now that he was dying
everybody supported his plan to record a CD
with Brel songs.
In the documentary, friends, colleagues and
family talk about Mesdag, who passed away in
1988. About his talent and ambition. About his
illness and the fulfilment of his last wish.
Including archive footage of concerts,
photographs and old interview extracts, in
which Mesdag talks about his imminent death.
Obviously complemented by songs performed
by Mesdag.

Landscapes Unknown (II)
Video no. 45
Director: Melle van Essen, Riekje Ziengs
The Netherlands 2007
Original language: Dutch, French
English video available
Genre: Documentary
Length: 50'
Every artist looks at the environment
differently, draws inspiration from it. A painter,
a photographer and a graphic artist from
various parts of the world talk about their art
and explain how they look. Using an intriguing
photography and editing, this film captures the
world of each artist concerned.
The Amsterdam-based painter Frans Walon is
alternately sitting in the red-light district
sketching whores and tourists or drawing in his
crammed house. His works are everywhere.
'Some people can draw well, but it doesn't have
a soul. They don't go far enough.' Graphic artist
Jan Hendrix works in Mexico. He hikes through
nature with his camera. 'Every landscape has a
certain factor of human intervention.' He
transforms these immediate images through
dissection and reduction into essential, abstract
shapes, which he uses in his silk screens. Malick
Sidibé makes photo portraits in Mali. He
believes in beauty. Finds the best sides of
people he portrays and gives them something to
hold: radios or briefcases, for example. Sidibé
searches the road for images.

Genre: Documentary
Length: 52'
In 2002, the Zeeland village of Sint Philipsland
was shocked by the murder of an old woman,
who was killed in her house. Detectives opted
for a new, controversial mode of investigation:
DNA research. Eighty boys and men were asked
to submit samples of their saliva. This
eventually produced a culprit. The investigated
men introduced in this film were left with
mixed feelings. One by one, filmmaker Kees Hin
calls them into the interrogation room again to
talk about the DNA investigation. One appeared
to be 'very level-headed', while the other
suddenly started doubting his innocence: 'Could
I have done it in a fit of insanity?' Sometimes
there are long silences, but Hin never interrupts
them. The homicide itself is tersely announced
in a news item. Scenes with the men are
interspersed with footage of the panoramic,
Zeeland landscape. Sometimes in split screen,
occasionally accompanied by unreal sounds.
The stories reveal a great deal about the
investigation, but also show how close-knit a
community like this still is today.

Meester Ben
Master Ben
Video no. 343
Director: Vuk Janic
The Netherlands 2008
Original language: Dutch
English video available
Genre: Documentary
Length: 53'
Ben has worked as a teacher in the
Schilderswijk quarter of The Hague for thirtythree years. Primary school Het Palet has seven
hundred pupils, five of whom originally come
from the Netherlands. Filmmaker Vuk Janic
follows the enthusiastic teacher in performing
his school duties, but especially at
extracurricular activities. With affable patience,
he gets acquainted with all the foreign names
on the first day of school, he praises the
attending parents during a parents' evening, he
makes house calls, discusses problematic cases
with behavioural experts and along with his
pupils buys fish for the class aquarium. He does
everything
with great
dedication and
commitment, which repays itself in motivated
children and a sound relationship with the
fathers and mothers, who are not always easy to
get on with. The documentary zooms in on two
pupils: the introverted girl Rajina, who has just
had a difficult period with her mother ('I can't
go to her with love') and the intractable
Abdellah, who does not like the fact he sees so
little of his father. Under teacher Ben's loving
supervision, they complete the year with
success, too.

My Mother, actress Willeke van Ammelrooy
Video no. 301
Director: Denise Janzée
The Netherlands 2008
Original language: Dutch
English video available
Genre: Documentary
Length: 48'
Denise Janzée portrays her famous mother, the
actress Willeke van Ammelrooy, to get to know
her better. In the conversations they have in
front of the camera, Janzée confronts her
mother with the fact she never really showed
her emotions in real life. 'I've seen you cry only
once', Denise says. That was at her father's
funeral, who committed suicide. The interviews
are illustrated with relevant scenes from the
many films Van Ammelrooy played in. For
example, we see how she says goodbye to her
film lover when he is arrested. Her look tells us
she is through with the relationship, now that
she has no use for this man anymore. She tells
her daughter that in real life she is just as
opportunistic. Janzée also followed her mother
on the set of an American movie and at home in
France, where she lives with opera singer Marco
Bakker. Although Van Ammelrooy candidly and
sincerely answers her daughter's questions, it is
clear that emotionally she remains aloof in front
of the camera.

The Netherlands 2008
Original language: Dutch

Genre: Documentary
Length: 56'
'I still live like my parents', Egbert says while
washing a handkerchief. 'If things are fine at
present, why change anything?' The aged
Egbert still lives on the farm where he was born,
alone nowadays. A day out in Amsterdam is a
big adventure. He gapes at everything in the
Bijenkorf shopping mall and compares city
apartments to henhouses.
This poetic and sometimes oppressive
documentary portrays the daily lives of three
adults who have always stayed in the parental
home - like nidicolous birds. In addition to
Egbert, they are the youthful looking Heleen,
who goes on a holiday to Tunisia with her
mother, and Michel from Amsterdam, who
tucks in his 100-year-old mother. The three
birds have different explanations for their
lifelong stay in the nest. Heleen simply failed to
meet a suitable party. Boredom and loneliness
are strangers to her. Monotony does not pass
Michel by, considering the platitudes in his
conversation. And Egbert's old nest breathes
intense desolation.

No More Heroes - De fotograaf Kees Tabak
Video no. 130
Director: Saskia Vredeveld
The Netherlands 2007
Original language: Dutch, English
Genre: Documentary
Length: 52'
Pop photography was still in its infancy when
music freak Kees Tabak started capturing punk
bands with his camera. In those (enviable) days,
journalists and photographers regularly hung
out with bands for a couple of days. Like Tabak,
who made gorgeous portraits of Tom Waits and
The Ramones, simply while touring, against the
background of gas stations.
In the eighties, he saw all big stars through his
lens. Sometimes by accident, like Madonna, just
before she got famous. Still, he turned his back
on his great love when his work got harder and
harder due to restrictions. But not forever.
Director Saskia Vredeveld, also responsible for
scenario and camera, followed Tabak when,
after watching the series “American Music” by
famous photographer Annie Leibovitz, he
decided to make the Dutch equivalent. She
filmed him when he portrayed bands like Moke,
The Golden Earring and Within Temptation,
meanwhile delving into Tabak's past. This
portrait of one of the pioneers of Dutch pop
photography at the same time portrays its
history.

Video no. 385
Director: Floris-Jan van Luyn
The Netherlands 2008
Original language: Chinese

Genre: Documentary
Length: 58'
Director Floris-Jan van Luyn returns to the
neighbourhood in Beijing where he used to live
in the 1990s as a correspondent for “NRC
Handelsblad”. This old quarter, with its narrow
passages and alleyways, is about to be
demolished, because a little further down the
road the futuristic looking National Theatre has
been built. Van Luyn portrays the district and
his former neighbours in calm, scrupulous
images, which offer a chance to observe the
details. A beer seller on a bike acts as our guide
and introduces us to a few inhabitants. We
watch them in their daily activities, while in
voice-over we hear them talk about their life in
Beijing, the changing times and their uncertain
future. Some are satisfied; others take
everything as it comes. But in conversations in
the street or drinking a glass around a table,
some people also complain about the increased
house prices, the meagre reimbursement of
moving expenses and the quality of politicians.
Meanwhile, one after the other building is
systematically demolished.

Een oude vriend van het Chinese volk
An Old Friend of the Chinese People
Video no. 597
Director: René Seegers
The Netherlands 2008
Original language: Dutch, English, French, Chinese
English video available
Genre: Documentary
Length: 53'
The Dutch documentary filmmaker Joris Ivens
(1898-1989) received the honorary title 'Old
friend of the Chinese people' from the Chinese
communist regime. One of the reasons was the
fact that in 1938 he gave the communists the
camera that captured the first footage of Mao
Zedong. Ivens made several films about China,
notably the twelve-hour picture “Hoe Yukong
de bergen verzette”, a tribute to Mao's Cultural
Revolution, which China itself called a
'catastrophe' shortly after. Directed by René
Seegers, actor Jeroen Willems follows in Ivens'
footsteps, in an attempt to understand why
Ivens never reconsidered his positive coverage.
Willems talks to experts and former associates
of Ivens, including an interpreter, a
pharmacist's assistant from the film (who
explains how Ivens directed him) and writer Bai
Hua, whom Ivens claimed as his best friend.
Archive footage includes fragments from Ivens'
work and interviews with the filmmaker, who
asserts: 'A political truth filmed at one moment
can completely change, even in its opposite, in
the next.'

Genre: Documentary
Length: 10'
The film was shot from a moving metro car
while entering the station, using a digital highspeed camera.
The result is an endless shot of people on a
subway platform passing by in slow motion.
The tranquil movement of the camera and
stillness of the people portrayed, give room for a
hypnotic chain of thoughts and associations.
The platform seems to have transformed into a
stage where everyday people's small gestures

Sacramentsdag en de tranen van de koning
Corpus Christi and the Tears of the King
Video no. 411
Director: Claudia Hoedemaker
The Netherlands 2008
Original language: Dutch
English video available
Genre: Documentary
Length: 37'
On Corpus Christi, a festival in honour of the
Eucharist, celebrated on the Thursday after
Trinity Sunday, a procession is held carrying
the Holy of Holies. This film follows a few
inhabitants of the village of Limbricht before
and on this day.
Using coloured sawdust, people lay out a multicoloured 'carpet', which the procession strides
over to the sounds of a brass band. The local
rifle club Sint Salvius traditionally accompanies
the procession, which is concluded by
koningsschieten, in which people try to shoot a
wooden bird from a pole. The person firing the
decisive shot may call himself King for a year.
The current King, Peter, can even acquire the
honorary title of Emperor if he manages to take
down the bird for the third consecutive time.
That has not happened since 1923. Nervously,
Peter asks the priest to put in a good word for
him, but the clergyman says he is unable to
'force things'. The tension mounts to fever
pitch.
The documentary shows how shared traditions
keep a small community together. In line with
Michiel van Erp's work, the film zooms in on
sympathetic human traits.

Original language: Dutch, Russian

Genre: Documentary
Length: 50'
Sasja, originally a Ukrainian from Kiev, lives
and works in The Hague. Years ago, she came to
Holland on a scholarship. She decided to stay
and make a career for herself. Her best friend
Natasha chose a different life. She is a music
teacher living with her boyfriend in Kiev and
expecting their first child. Natasha: 'Sasja has
always been the gutsy one.'
With the birth of Natasha's baby in sight, Sasja
travels to her native country to visit her parents
and friend. On this occasion, the emigrant
finally takes stock. With her friend and parents,
she brings back memories of days gone by. After
the Orange Revolution, the Ukraine changed
fast: from a socialist culture, in which these
women grew up, to a capitalist society, within a
few months.
In the Netherlands, people ask every day where
Sasja comes from: 'People constantly alert me
to the fact that this is not my home.' But she no
longer belongs in Kiev either: 'You go
somewhere and think: I belong here, just like
that tree over there. But then it turns out that is
no longer the case.'

Length: 14'
Uummannaq is the most beautiful place on
earth, Pipaluk Hammeken thinks. She should
know, because she lives in the capital, littered
with colourful houses, of Northwest Greenland,
where the first sun can be seen earlier every
year, because the icebergs shielding it shrink
year by year. Pipaluk explains how the life of the
one thousand inhabitants, who depend on seal
hunting and fishing, is threatened by pollution
by the industrialised world. 'The most
poisonous waste is dumped at the cleanest place
on earth.' The poison accumulates in the fish
and the seals - the people's staple diet. The
camera follows Pipaluk and her family on a trip
that becomes ever harder due to the thinning
ice: with huskies across endless white plains to
the village where her friend Sarah lives.

The patients in nursing home Tabitha are no
longer capable of taking charge over their own
lives. This has consequences for everyday life,
but also for the end of their lives. More than
twenty years ago, patient Bram de Gooijer (73)
and his wife drew up a euthanasia statement. 'If
I will arrive at a mental state in which
restoration to a reasonable state is not to be
expected ... I want euthanasia to be executed on
me', he wrote in 1985, in full possession of his
faculties. Now, De Gooijer is a mere shadow of
his former self and the first deliberations about
euthanasia have begun. Nonetheless, he seems
to suggest that he would like be treated if he
gets ill. But his wife insists that he does not
know what he says and his suffering should be
ended. The doctor falls back on his professional
code: in case of doubt, choose for the patient.
But for which patient, the past or present one?

Staphorst in tegenlicht
Video no. 182
Director: Emile van Rouveroy van Nieuwaal,
Maarten van Rouveroy van Nieuwaal
The Netherlands 2008
Original language: Dutch (dialect)
Genre: Documentary
Length: 54'
'Staphorst' is proverbial for 'strictly Reformed
and closed'. This made it rather unusual that
documentary-makers Van Rouveroy & Van
Rouveroy were allowed to shoot a portrait of
this village community over a longer period of
time. Of course, the church remained off-limits
during the service, but a sound recording
captures a reproachful sermon by the minister.
As head of the SGP (Reformed Party) and an
alderman's father, the minister also has a finger
in the political pie, which touches on a sore
issue. At council meetings, councillors from
non-confessional parties raise objections to this
marriage of religion and government. Other
agenda items are the cursing ban and the
observance of Sunday's rest.
This is interlarded with the vicissitudes of the
Kok family, who face moral and religious
dilemmas. The father is seriously ill, the son
prefers night life to church and the traditionally
dressed mother has her private thoughts. Their
conversion from Historic Calvinism to NeoCalvinism is a crucial option.

'It's a shame that they bluntly label us as the
hedonistic drug generation. We've really
accomplished great and innovative things.' For
Micha Klein, the nineties were a time of house
music, love, drugs and his birth as the prodigy
of digital art. Director Corinne van Egeraat
composed a portrait of this master at the art of
living from three hundred hours of archive
footage, interviews and images she made in the
year she closely followed Klein and his muse,
former model Afke Reijenga. She explains how
his career started - how he captured the time
spirit at the right moment in his then still
groundbreaking, wholly digital images and
films. Except as an artist, Klein developed as a
VJ and standard bearer of the party scene,
particularly on the party island of Ibiza. In the
twenty-first century, Klein changed tack
somewhat with his now commercially
successful studio, which not everybody around

ended long ago, but in Hannelore's life it left
deep scars. In Westerbork, the transit camp
near the Dutch-German border, she waited for
deportation to the extermination camps. Being
a performer in the camp revue, she had a
privileged position. While masses of other
people passed the camp and went to their death
by train, Hannelore could stay. In the camp she
entered into a marriage of convenience.
Strangely enough, especially because she was

Portrait of the fishermen in a Galician coastal
town, where people still suffer the consequences
of the catastrophe with the oil tanker Prestige in
2002. Removing the oil that washed ashore is a
hellish job. And the sea knows it. In voice-over,
the ocean has a (woman's) voice, telling what
she sees every day and what she holds inside,
something she has lived for for centuries. The
camera passes over the surface of the sea, or
takes a plunge. This is also how the days in the
seaside village come and go, just like the
fishermen. Many sailors emigrated to
Rotterdam in the sixties and seventies, where
they now live in the Zeemanshuis (sailors'
home). They read from letters from those days:
'We set course to Rio de Janeiro. I will write
again when I get there.' Through the window,
the Erasmus Bridge is visible in the dusk.

Many babies are born without a hitch in the
Netherlands. Unfortunately, this does not go for
every child. The filmmakers visited the
intensive care unit of the UMC hospital in
Groningen, where prematurely born babies are
treated by a committed medical team, which
discusses every patient individually. Does the
child have a chance of a decent life? And what is
fundamentally the definition of a decent life?
Very rarely, the doctors resort to active
euthanasia, by means of the 'Groningen
Protocol' that was developed here. This 'playing
for God' has elicited criticism worldwide.
However: 'It's easy to start a treatment, but it's
tough to decide not to insert the tube', a doctor
explains. The camera accurately captures all
emotions and considerations. Also those of the
parents. Their hope, their grief, the shock when
the baby passes on. The filmmakers respectfully
film their emotions. As they do the contrast
between the tiny babies and the medical
equipment surrounding them. In the
background, we hear saxophone sounds played
by Candy Dulfer.

Ami Diarra is a griot in Kayes in Mali. She acts
as an unofficial civil servant. At important
events like baptisms, weddings or funerals, she
sings about the event and the people involved.
Furthermore Ami, who sits in a wheelchair due
to child polio, is a driving social force. The
documentary follows her when with unbridled
dedication she tries to organise an information
and publicity manifestation about Aids. She
tries to obtain permits, calls on everybody to
join in, places an order for posters and makes
people arrange chairs and microphones.
Meanwhile, she openly speaks to everyone
about the disease, the circumcision of women
and prostitution. And she occupies herself with
training the orphan girl Mi, who will succeed
her as a griot. Apart from presenting a portrait
of Ami, the film describes the difficulties faced
by women in Mali and surrounding countries
and the strength with which they fight these
problems.

Video no. 882

Original language: Flemish, Thai, French, English

Genre: Documentary
Length: 65'
With its twenty-plus floors, the Chicagoblok
high rise in Antwerp has a bad reputation in the
city. But the residents think quite differently
about it. The retired Louis has lived here for
three years with his Thai wife. He is not proud
of his place, but he mingles quite nicely with the
other people. After his wife had left him, Rudi
ended up in this council housing project. 'I'm
surrounded by negroes. They live at night and
make a racket.' Single Sandra is ashamed of her
neighbourhood and longingly awaits the arrival
of her new, Moroccan husband, whom she
found on the Internet. African Yves is proud of
his block of flats. He feels safe and does not
understand the criticism. Yassin, too, calls it a
'chill' neighbourhood. New resident Edith is
delighted: 'I'm in heaven!' Finally, she feels at
home.
The filmmaker follows the residents from the
elevator into their apartments and also registers
life around the block. Fanatical kids that play
soccer, the arrival of the ice-cream man and
rapping friends in the night air.

Marc Mulders is a much-discussed artist. He
was at one time rejected at the art academy due
to his emotional immaturity, which expressed
itself in idealism. Now, he regularly gets
commissions and made the stained glass
window 'Een tuin van glas' to commemorate
Queen Beatrix' 25th jubilee. He can vent his
idealism in his work at Artenzo, a studio for
mentally challenged artists. In Dauw, Mulders
is followed for four seasons, each period being
introduced by poetic nature images. Long,
contemplative scenes with the artist at work are
alternated with registrations of visits to
expositions,
varnishing
days
and
art
manifestations, and Artenzo. Sometimes
directly, sometimes in voice-over, Mulders talks
about his career, about Catholicism as a source
of inspiration, about his painting techniques,
the use of material and his vision of art in
general.

The Dictator Hunter
Video no. 35
Director: Klaartje Quirijns
The Netherlands 2007
Original language: English, French, Arabic
English video available
Genre: Documentary
Length: 74'
If you kill someone, you go to prison, whereas
dictators with thousands of victims to answer
for can often live freely in the lap of luxury.
Indefatigably, human rights lawyer Reed Brody
of Human Rights Watch fights this rank
injustice. He previously played an important
role in the process against the Chilean dictator
Pinochet. “The Dictator Hunter” follows his
hunt for Pinochet's African counterpart:
Hissène Habré, from 1984 to 1990 president of
Chad. For seven years now, Brody has been
supporting a group of victims' relatives who
want to bring Habré to trial. The lawyer serves a
higher purpose: international law. He is
prepared to sacrifice a lot for this, even
privately. Director Klaartje Quirijns follows him
to Africa, Europe and the US. A crucial event is
a meeting of the African Union. If the leaders,
including equally controversial men like
Mugabe and Khadafi, decide to prosecute
Habré, this class of tyrants can no longer do
whatever they please unpunished.

Joaquin Sabina - 19 días y 500 noches
Joaquin Sabina - 19 Days and 500 Nights
Video no. 62
Director: Ramón Gieling
The Netherlands 2008
Original language: Spanish
English video available
Genre: Documentary
Length: 83'
They still carry his house keys with them,
Joaquin Sabina's old friends. It does not matter
that the Madrid-based singer, who is adored
throughout the Spanish-speaking community,
changed the locks to his house years ago. After
the brain haemorrhage that hit him in 2001,
Sabina suddenly could not bear the dozens of
friends anymore that invaded his house. This
was a raw deal for them, as the interviews
reveal that director Ramón Gieling had with
them. As in Gieling's previous documentaries,
he created a cinematographic form for the
interviews, which he consistently applies.
Friends and former lovers are introduced in a
minutely reconstructed copy of the living room
they were expelled from. In the real living room,
they used to lead a loose life without thinking
about the health risks.
The film shows Sabina during a performance in
the arena in Madrid where he likes to watch
bullfights. How deep his music affects people is
clear from the confession of a nationalistic
Spanish woman: she considers him a dirty, leftwing swine, but knows all his records by heart.

Length: 81'
Magician Hans Klok, who for years ended his
Dutch shows with the catchphrase 'See you in
Vegas', sincerely believes in his American
dream. Documentary makers Beumer and
Krijgsman follow the enthusiastic performer in
the period he struggled free from the Dutch
polder to go and hit the big times in desert city
Las Vegas - the capital of entertainment. It
surprises nobody in the illusionist's entourage
that the road to the international top is strewn
with unexpected setbacks and tough decisions.
Still, Klok's own brother has to swallow his
pride when he is laid off as the manager,
because it is impossible for Hans to refuse an
exclusive contract with Joop van den Ende's
Stage Entertainment.
Despite all the glamour and glitter, Hans Klok
remains a healthy Dutch guy in this portrait,
who is prepared to pull out all the stops. It is
self-evident that a lot is still left to the
imagination.

The Last Days of Shishmaref
Video no. 89
Director: Jan Louter
The Netherlands 2008
Original language: English, Inupiaq
English video available
Genre: Documentary
Length: 95'
'The modern era has put us in a vulnerable
position', one of the main characters sighs in
this documentary that focuses on a small island
community in northern Alaska. The Eskimo
does not refer to the arrival of iPods or cell
phones. Or to the fact that his children prefer to
only eat junk food. He talks about the farreaching consequences of global warming. Due
to the Arctic ice melt, the island's coastline is
gradually washed away. In less than fifteen
years, the entire island will be wiped off the
map. While the wind sweeps across the vast
snowy landscape and the huskies howl, the
islanders go about their daily routine. They
hunt for reindeer and visit the launderette or
bingo night. The stories and reflections by
different Eskimo families introduce the
spectator to a way of life that after four
thousand years is threatened with extinction.
After all, the fact that the nightmare
surrounding them is slowly pushing to the
surface becomes painfully clear.

Megumi
Video no. 57
Director: Mirjam van Veelen
The Netherlands, Japan 2008
Original language: Japanese
English video available
Genre: Documentary
Length: 63'
Thirty-one years ago, the Japanese Megumi
Yokota was kidnapped on her way home from
school. The then thirteen-year-old girl was
taken to North Korea. She was allegedly forced
to teach Japanese to spies there. Filmmaker
Mirjam van Veelen looked for the story behind
Megumi. It is told by her parents, whose
composed smile visibly betrays a deeply felt
pain. Megumi's brothers and the former
principal also talk about the events and about
Megumi. The North Korean authorities
meanwhile put out a statement that she
committed suicide, but none of the people
involved accepts this story. They collect
evidence of her existence in North Korea and
keep pressurising the Japanese government.
The filmmaker's search itself is also included, in
the form of an actress paying a visit to Niigata,
the Yokotas' hometown.

Het moeras
The Swamp
Video no. 70
Director: BarBara Hanlo
The Netherlands 2008
Original language: Dutch
English video available
Genre: Experimental
Length: 61'
Impressionistic, nightmarish images of a
traveller in the Danube delta who looks for 'the
man in the house behind the swamp' from the
story of the same name by Dutch author A.
Alberts. When he moors at an island with a
house on it that used to be the executed dictator
Ceausescu's country cottage, reality and
imagination converge at this remarkable place.
The occupant is disturbed by the unwanted
guest. When it gets dark, he disappears into the
house. He is watched through the slightly open
door. In the end, he sits down to dinner and it
turns out the table has been set for three. The
invisible third person is the host's imaginary
lover. Loneliness and booze prevail. When the
traveller's delirium is at its height, the swamp
becomes the dominant factor.

Video no. 186
Director: Heddy Honigmann
The Netherlands 2008
Original language: Spanish
English video available
Genre: Documentary
Length: 93'
For a long time now, Peru has been governed by
presidents who came into power through semidemocratic elections or corruption. Although
these men promised in their inaugural speeches
they would support the people, the Peruvians
are mainly forgotten. As are the inhabitants of
the capital Lima.
An elderly bartender mixes a classic cocktail.
He has made this Pisco Sour for many
presidents now. 'Behind the bar, you hear a lot,
but you can also feel impotent. You can't change
anything about the situation.' Many inhabitants
of Lima originally come from the Andes
Mountains. Hoping for a better life, they moved
to the city - ending up in poverty, after all. But
they are resourceful. Children do acrobatics at
the traffic lights, while others shine shoes for
hours. Like fourteen-year-old Henry, who
contrasts sharply with the teenagers playing
with their cellphones beside him.
Honigmann visits both the city centre and the
slums where many young artists live.
Restrained registrations alternate with the
telling conversations that Honigmann has with
people.

In 2006, Al Zarqawi, an important leader of AlQaida, was killed by American troops. Al
Zarqawi was originally from the poor Jordanian
town of Zarqa, where he was not exactly known
as a strictly religious man. Still, he became an
extremist here, like many other men from the
region.
The filmmaker descended on Zarqa for this
unpredictable and humane film and followed a
former mujahedin in his search for work to
support his family. This Abu Amar lacks
business instinct, so his book about the jihad
fails to find a publisher. There is nothing left for
him but go to the city with his sons and collect
cardboard. Amar tells about his memories of Al
Zarqawi and his view of the state of affairs in
the Middle East. He also discusses the subject
with friends. 'The solution is in economy,
democracy and freedom of speech, one of them
asserts. 'If you're suppressed and can't express
yourself, you turn to violence to convey your
ideas.' And Amar also struggles with reconciling
his religion with the everyday reality.

In The Hague, the gay couple Patrick and
Edward live next door to the married lesbian
couple Iris and Manon. They are friends and all
four want to have children. And why should you
not, if you fancy your own sex, have your own
family? Edward: 'I also want to be able to
extend my line, leave something behind.'
In the Netherlands, more than 20,000 children
have homosexual parents. Since anonymous
donors are illegal, it happens more and more
that lesbian couples ask a (gay) friend or couple
not only to be a donor, but also actively play the
father's role.
And this is exactly the plan of the two couples
from The Hague. We see them doing a
pregnancy test, at the first ultrasound, in their
daily activities and furnishing the two baby's
rooms. They describe extensively how they
envisage the care for the baby and who will be
the biological parents and why, and that they
will all be mothers and fathers. Even Patrick,
who has only been together with Edward for ten
months, so he is not very close to the girls yet.

Fawzia, Muna, Farah and Rania are the four
anchorwomen of the highly popular MBC talk
show Kalam Nawaem. In this pan-Arabic show,
which is broadcast weekly via satellite and
reaches some two million viewers all over the
world, the ladies address controversial issues
like homosexuality, masturbation, incest and
terrorism. The articulate and charismatic
hostesses, coming from Egypt, Saudi Arabia,
Lebanon and Palestine, are followed at work,
but also at home. In the studio dressing rooms,
they have hearty discussions with the producer
about the course the show should pursue. At
home, the women talk about their life style, the
excitement around the programme and the
impact it has on society. All four consider their
work a contribution to the shift in the
traditional Arab world to a more open and
democratic
society.
Meanwhile,
the

Sozdar, She Who Lives Her Promise
Video no. 188
Director: Annegriet Wietsma
The Netherlands 2007
Original language: Dutch, German, Turkish, Kurdish
English video available
Genre: Documentary
Length: 70'
'If freedom were easily obtainable, it would be
unnecessary for so many people to die for its
sake.' Says Nuriye Kesbir, also known as
Sozdar, a PKK leader and champion of the
Kurdish fight for independence and the
emancipation of women. The filmmaker uses
her film to try and unravel why someone like
Hannie Schaft became a WW II resistance hero,
whereas Sozdar is branded one of the most
dangerous women in Europe.
At the age of twelve, Kesbir and her family fled
to Germany, after they had been driven from
their village by Turkish soldiers. In the late
eighties, she saw that the Kurds were still
oppressed, so she decided to stand up and do
something for 'humanity' and her people. In
1991, she joined the guerillas for the first time
and moved into the mountains to fight.
Annegriet Wietsma got in touch with Kesbir as
early as 2001, when she had been imprisoned in
the Netherlands on suspicion of terrorist
activities. Incorporating some of Kesbir's
letters, archive footage of guerrillas in the
mountains and interviews with relatives and
friends, the committed Wietsma tells Kesbir's
eventful story.

Talking Guitars
Video no. 43
Director: Claire Pijman
The Netherlands 2007
Original language: Dutch, English
English video available
Genre: Documentary
Length: 73'
With a coy smile, master guitar craftsman Flip
Scipio listens to famous musicians explain he
can handle any custom order. Experts claim he
can even make driftwood sing. People talk in
crescendo terms about him, but he is modesty
itself. He once took up this work because he
liked playing around with wood. When you
watch him work with steam and mould, you
understand the special sensation he says he has
when feeling wood bend in his hands.
'Suddenly, your guitar is threedimensional
instead of flat.' Paul Simon was so deeply
impressed with the work-in-progress guitar that
Scipio gave him to try out, that he forbade him
to change anything. And it was Scipio who was
called in to completely readjust one of Keith
Richard's favourite guitars for the coming
European tour. This documentary introduces
several musicians who entrust their beloved
instrument to him and demonstrate the guitars
that Scipio built or revamped.

That's Life
Video no. 437
Director: Sander Veeneman
The Netherlands 2008
Original language: Dutch, English, Spanish
English video available
Genre: Documentary
Length: 60'
Five to ten years ago, photographer and
filmmaker Sander Veeneman portrayed three
children in Mozambique, South Africa and
Peru. They should now have grown into young
adults. What have they developed into? Have
they managed to build up a future for
themselves and their family? And what are their
dreams for the future? He visits them with a
film camera and sometimes as the only data
their name and age. Especially the girl from
Mozambique is hard to trace. After looking here
and there, he finds a young woman, but is she
the girl in the photograph? The boy from Peru is
not doing so well. His Indian tribe is severely
struck by TBC and hepatitis. In South Africa,
Veeneman finds out that 'his' boy has become a
lively lad who loves sport.
The road movie documentary shows what their
everyday lives look like today, the primary
perspective being these people's inner strength
and not so much the poverty that surrounds
them.

Tussen hemel en aarde
Between Heaven and Earth
Video no. 730
Director: Frank van den Engel, Masja Novikova
The Netherlands 2007
Original language: Uzbek, Russian
English video available
Genre: Documentary
Length: 72'
When Achat and Tursun Ali were seven and saw
a tightrope walker perform for the first time,
they lost their hearts to the circus. Together,
they became his apprentices and each started
his own family circus. The film extensively
shows what binds them: the awe-inspiring
exertions with weights, the blood-curdling
tightrope walks, the slithery grappling and the
fascinated, joyful looks of the spectators. The
soundtrack enhances the idyllic atmosphere.
But there is a sharp edge to it, too; during their
extravaganzas, the artists risk everything.
Due to the turbulent political situation their
country Uzbekistan has been in for some time
now, the friendship between the two
patresfamilias is under pressure. After a
dramatic event, Tursun Ali decides to renounce
politics. Achat stays the course, even after a
two-year prison sentence and a case of arson in
his house.

De verloren kolonie
The Lost Colony
Video no. 54
Director: Astrid Bussink
The Netherlands 2008
Original language: Russian, Abkhaz
English video available
Genre: Documentary
Length: 90'
The plaster is falling from the walls; the bars of
the cages are rusty. Desolation everywhere in
the Suchum Primate Centre. Still, scientists in
this institute in Abkhazia, which was founded in
1927, used to carry out advanced research of the
life of primates. During the violent separation of
Georgia from the Soviet Union in 1992/1993,
this pride of the country - the Americans built
laboratories after their model - could not be
saved. The ape colony fled into the forest and
has not been seen ever since. Nevertheless, one
of the staff members faithfully takes food to the
inhospitable area where he thinks they still live.
The food is eaten, which is sufficient proof to
him.
Director Astrid Bussink stumbled upon this
subject in a newspaper article about
experiments to crossbreed man and monkey.
Black-and-white archive footage shows how
primates are dissected and swung around in a
large machine. The research focuses on cancer
and space travel. The documentary follows the
build-up to and the progress of the symposium
that was organised in honour of the eightieth
jubilee of the Centre and that will hopefully
launch a new beginning.

Het verloren paradijs
Paradise Remembered
Video no. 350
Director: Jan Wouter van Reijen
The Netherlands 2008
Original language: Dutch
English video available
Genre: Documentary
Length: 62'
As a child, you take your time to watch the
melting snow for minutes. Or to examine
seemingly worthless treasures a little closer. A
top, for example, or a lock that has been
snipped through. Or to immensely enjoy a
coupe of ice cream, like the young woman in the
film still does. As a girl, her father already took
her to an ice-cream parlour, where she spooned
up her first strawberry sherbet. And she still
frequents her familiar parlour. 'How many icecream parlours does Holland actually have?',
she wonders. One sunny summer, she starts
looking for the answer. She calls on all parlours
that are named after Venice - from Leeuwarden
to Utrecht and from Zeist to Oss. Every time she
eats, clearly enjoying it, a fancy ice cream.
Products with resounding names like Coupe Da
Vinci, Coupe Amarena or Melone. Meanwhile,
she tells with wonder about the history of the
places she visits. We also see images of the
roads that lead to the different ice-cream
parlours. A crash barrier, a vast polder, bridges
and trains. Sometimes, she gets off to peer at
the Dutch scenery.

De vijfde bruid
The Fifth Bride
Video no. 215
Director: Rogier Timmermans
The Netherlands 2007
Original language: Dutch
English video available
Genre: Documentary
Length: 68'
'Some people go to Lourdes, I went to Anton
Heyboer', filmmaker Rogier Timmermans' aunt
Petra summarises. 'I ended up with him and
was cured. Without Ton, I wouldn't have been
around anymore'. In the eighties, Petra was the
fifth and last woman to join the fine artist
Anton Heyboer's harem, where she encountered
the authenticity she had vainly sought in
society: 'Everyone tends to play roles there'.
Timmermans intended to make a portrait of his
aunt, who runs a gallery across from Heyboer's
closed commune in Den Ilp. The challenging
film process forces the filmmaker to take a
closer look at his family, which leads to a
confrontation with his father. He also pays a
visit to his grandmother - Petra's mother and
collector of Heyboer's work - in Limburg. The
relationship his grandma has with Heyboer
surprisingly makes the pieces of the puzzle fit.
Shortly after Rogier's often postponed meeting
with Anton, the artist passes away. It turns out
that in the course of the shooting process,
Rogier's bond with Petra has been
strengthened.

Black Eyes
Video no. 433
Director: Jan Bosdriesz
The Netherlands 2008
Original language: Dutch, Russian, Romanian, Latvian
English video available
Genre: Documentary
Length: 97'
Over the years, filmmaker Jan Bosdriesz
collected curious souvenirs from various
countries that he cherishes. He wonders about
their history. One of his favourite items is the
Russian LPs by Pyotr Leschenko from the 1930s
that he once inherited from his father. While
Bosdriesz travels to Russia to learn more about
the life of the singer whose music was forbidden
in Soviet Russia, the turbulent history of the
filmmaker's family is also addressed.
During his trip, Bosdriesz talks to people who
knew Leschenko. The film gradually unravels
Leschenko's life by means of interviews,
concerts, archive footage and a search through
archives. In the background, we hear
Leschenko's often tango-like love songs. Back
home, Bosdriesz talks to his half sisters and
unearths stories about his mother and her two
husbands by means of photographs and
recollections. It turns out that the Bosdriesz
history, too, abounds with rich, but tragic
events.

Shylock
Video no. 582
Director: Michal Shabtay
The Netherlands 2008
Original language: Dutch, English
English video available
Genre: Documentary
Length: 68'
Of all the memorable characters from the plays
by Shakespeare, Shylock is one of the most
intriguing. The film “Shylock” is an examination
of the tragic, droll and often unbearable life of
the most famous Jew in theatre history. We see
him through the eyes of Tubal, the only other
Jew in Shakespeare 's “The Merchant of
Venice”. It is at the same time a philosophical
and cinematographic study of our view of
strangers through the ages. In this 'one-man
film' with Cahid Ölmez, a colourful group of
characters passes by: from Portia to Pontius
Pilate, from the merchant Antonio to Adolph
Hitler and from Dracula to the Wandering Jew.
But Tubal, Shylock's only friend, is the leading
character. With a wink, a grin and a shrug,
Tubal maps out how the perspective of Shylock
has developed over the centuries. He talks
about Shakespeare himself, about drama, about
history and about ideas. In the film, Gareth
Amstrong's solo performance of the play is
combined with the “The Merchant of Venice” in
the adaptation and direction of TGA/Olana
Mafalaani.

Traces of a genocide are buried deep in the
mountains of Eastern Anatolia and in the
memories of Turks and Kurds. To speak openly
of the deportation and killing of the Armenians
from this area in 1915 is considered an insult to
the Turkish nation.
But for Ugur Üngör, a Dutch-Turkish scholar,

going on a road-trip through the land of their
grandparents and through their forbidden
memories of the Armenian Genocide. An
unsuspecting Turkish soundman joins them on

Why are they taking the risk? For the sake of
history, or family? Justice, or guilt? Truth, or
ambition?

On the Edge of Life and Death
Video no. 715
Director: Rob Hof
The Netherlands 2007
Original language: Dutch
English video available
Genre: Documentary
Length: 52' and 58'
On the Edge of Death and Life explores
decision-making and ethical questions of
doctors and parents in a Dutch neonatology
department concerning the early birth of
premature children.
The Netherlands is the first country in the
world where a protocol defines the minimum
number of weeks a newborn child should have
to start intensive care treatment. The protocol
does so because of ethical reasons. A child and
its parents should be protected against
irresponsible treatment, treatment which leads
in a great number of cases to handicapped or
the death of children at the cost of a lot of
suffering. Treatment only starts when babies
have reached at least 25 weeks of age.
On the Edge of Death and Life deals with the
frontiers of medical science. Where does science
have to give up and let go in a time that
everything seems possible?

¡Cuba RebelióN!
Video no. 700
Director: Sander de Nooij, Alessio Cuomo
The Netherlands 2008
Original language: Cuban
English video available
Genre: Music and Arts
Length: 52'
Cuba RebelioN is not another film about Cuba
and Salsa Music or Cuba and Cigars.
It’s film about Cuban underground punk-rock
and metal musicians who rebel against the
Castro-regime and shows the daily struggle of
artists who dare to make a statement with their
songs. And it features great music - the kind you
won’t expect.
Filmmakers/musicians Alessio Cuomo and
Sander de Nooij went to Cuba with their camera
and their guitars and secretly filmed a new
generation of young artists who are against the
communist regime and want to make a change,
even at the risk of imprisonment.
Gorki Luis Águila Carrasco from the punk-rock
band Porno Para Ricardo became very popular
with
anti-communist
songs
like
‘El
Commandante’ and ‘El Cake’.
In 2003, when Gorki had just produced an
award-winning video and was announced as the
third most popular rockstar in Cuba, he was
suddenly arrested on charges of drug
trafficking. Human Rights organisations say
that his arrest is just a way to silence him for
political reasons. After two years Gorki was
released, but he is still blacklisted. The film
follows Porno Para Ricardo, the metalband
Escape and the rap/rock band QVA Libre,
featuring concert footage and interviews with
these musicians. It shows the painful reality of
artists who can’t express themselves publicly.

Genre: Documentary
Length: 50'
We follow Dalal Mouazzi as she grapples with
the death of her martyred husband. While Dalal
is proud of the way Ibrahim died, his loss has
left a painful void in the life of her and her five
children.
The film offers a unique insight into a Shiite
Muslim community and shows how Hezbollah
takes care of this family. Regarded a terrorist
organization by many Western countries, they
also offer spiritual and social support. With a
well-trained staff, their social programs offer
some of the best welfare services in Lebanon;
the essence of Hezbollah’s power. We witness
how Dalal’s children – the ideal future martyrs are socialized by Hezbollah and their
community to love and respect the concept of
Jihad. This support creates a moral sense of
indebtedness. We see how the Party of God
encourages its followers to become martyrs by
glorifying the Jihad and creating a sense of
loyalty by providing social support. This cycle of
martyrdom is crucial to Hezbollah’s survival
and future strategy.

Mr Rakowski
Video no. 718
Director: Jan Diederen
The Netherlands 2007
Original language: English
English video available
Genre: Documentary
Length: 75' and 55'
There are many holocaust survivor stories
which focus on the familiar pain, guilt and
shame suffered by survivors. This is not one of
them. This is the story of 90-year old Sam
Rakowksi, a Jewish man who by any measure,
would be considered for the highest honor that
mankind can bestow for bravery and
perseverance. Yet as a father this man is
tragically flawed, and his highly successful 55year old son, Richie, is still desperate to
understand why.
This film documents Richie’s attempts to bridge
the gulf between himself and his father. In
doing so it not only explores the universal and
timeless theme of the father-son relationship, it
also probes the gray area between the
debilitating aftereffects of psychological trauma
and the apparent inescapability of inherited
characteristics. It asks some uncomfortable
questions, such as: Can a holocaust survivor’s
horrendous experiences be the sole cause of, or
even justify, unacceptable behavior as a parent?
Can the child of a Holocaust survivor ever view
their parent as anything other than a Holocaust
survivor?
The result is a deeply moving and surprisingly
optimistic portrait of a severely problematic
father and son relationship, compounded by the
father’s traumatic experiences during the
Holocaust.

Stolen Children
Video no. 726
Director: Ivanka Bakker
The Netherlands 2008
Original language: Dutch, Italian
English video available
Genre: Documentary
Length: 50'
This documentary portrays two mothers who
are fighting for the right to keep their children
after an international separation.
Miranda is a ‘kidnapper”- she took her daughter
back from Italy to the Netherlands without the
consent of Noa´s father. Jeanette is a victim of
kidnapping - her two young daughters did not
return to The Netherlands after a holiday in
Egypt with their Egyptian father.
With globalization, international marriages and
international divorces are increasing. The
conflict about parental rights in case of a
divorce is a growing issue. Both parents want
equal parental rights. According to The The
Hague convention it is called ‘international
kidnapping’ if one parent takes the child to
another country without consent of the other
parent. But reality is more complex than a
convention. Law systems differ per country and
can contradict one another. Parents can lose
themselves in endless lawsuits. In the end the
child is the victim.

Genre: Drama
Length: 100'
Although they have had their looks drastically
changed for their wealthy husbands, three
bored millionaire's wives threaten to be
swapped for younger rivals, after all. The first
victim of nagging suspicion is Kitty, married to
a record industry bigwig. She uses an extensive
checklist to tally how suspicious her husband's
behaviour is. In the long term, this might well
cause some ruffles in her luxurious life. She
decides to set a hired gun, who adores Cliff
Richard and has a deformed face, on him. But
the hitman does not do the job without a
struggle. What follows is a satirical farce that is
alternately reminiscent of “Gooische Vrouwen”,
“A Fish Called Wanda”, “The Naked Gun 33
1/3” and Dick Maas' own “Flodder” films.
The director makes use of his familiar
trademarks: cynical gallows humour, flat
characters, bright colours, spectacular stunts
and a break-neck tempo. The intended title “De
Botox Methode” was changed by order of the
pharmaceutical company Allergan.

The Netherlands 2008
Original language: Dutch

Genre: Drama
Length: 85'
'This is not an everyday story. So that you know.
If you don't understand it at times, you'll just
have to rely on... well...it'll be fine', says Joke in
the voice-over. Joke is quite a normal woman
with a family in Leidschendam. 'I put my
children to bed, as I'm supposed to', she
emphasises. Still, Joke makes a non-standard
choice, which makes her end up in a car late at
night. By a confluence of events, she meets two
other drifters on a remote road. The strange girl
is silent; the man wants to go to Geldrop. The
three young strangers make a symbiotic road
trip through both a fairy-like and a
hyperrealistic Holland. Nobody asks any
questions, although in time some things are
revealed about the characters. About their
motives to choose anonymously for the road
and look for deliverance.
Thijs Römer's feature debut. His scenario is full
of imaginative, visual excursions and perverse
dialogues, like: 'How many advertising
campaigns do you know? Only fifteen?!' 'But I
do know twenty-two different horse species.'
