God Is Our Refuge and Strength –
Walking With God In Difficult Times
By Jim Biscardi Jr.
David was promised a throne room, but was forced to live
like an animal. He saved all Israel from the Philistine army by
battling and destroying their champion Goliath; and yet all King
Saul in his jealousy wanted to do was destroy him. He gave up
his right to a home and was hounded night and day like a dog by
Saul’s men. David also experienced the rebellion of his son;
and was again forced to leave his palace and go into hiding. But
David knew his source of strength and refuge. Listen to David’s
heartbeat: “The Lord is my rock, and my fortress, and my
deliverer; The God of my rock; in him will I trust: he is my
shield, and the horn [strength] of my salvation. My high
tower, and my refuge, my savior…” (2 Samuel 22:2-3).
Jesus emptied Himself of His heavenly glory and showed
unconditional love to all. He miraculously healed all who came
to Him - the lame, the blind, the leprous, and the demonpossessed. But He was rejected by the religious leaders,
misunderstood by His home town, abandoned by His twelve
closest disciples, and denied by the leader of His inner circle.
Those who shouted “Praise the Lord” to Him on Sunday, cried
“Crucify Him” on Friday! And yet Jesus could declare, “As the
Father has loved me, so have I loved you: continue in my
love. If you keep my commandments you shall abide in my
love; even as I have kept my Father’s commandments and
abide in his love.” (John 15: 9-10).
The apostle Paul was the greatest Christian evangelist. Yet
he was beaten five times with 39 stripes. He was stoned. He
was shipwrecked three times. He was helpless floating in the
ocean for a day and night. He was often hungry and thirsty, in
cold, and nakedness. In addition, he had the care of all the
churches that weighed heavilyon him daily. (2 Corinthians 11:2328). And yet he could say, “Therefore, I take pleasure in
infirmities, in reproaches, in necessities, in persecutions, in
distresses for Christ’s sake: for when I am weak, then am I
strong.” (2Corinthians 12:10). He knew that God’s strength
was made perfect in him through his weakness. He knew that
we were more than conquerors through Him that loves us.
(Romans 8:37). He knew that the Alpha and Omega, the
Beginning and the Ending, could see the end from the beginning
and work ALL THINGS together for good to those who love
and serve Him. (Romans 8:28). He knew, like David and Jesus,
that God was His Refuge and Strength.
Let’s remember, “God is our refuge and strength, a very
present help in trouble. Therefore, we will not fear… Be
still and know that I am God…The Lord of hosts is with us;
the God of Jacob is our refuge” (Psalm 46:1-11).

a FREE teen rally in the Sanctuary on Friday night
Dave has been the youth pastor at Cornerstone Christian Church in Wyckoff, NJ for the past
nine years. He leads a youth worship team that ministers to the youth group each week, and
has recently returned from a missions trip to Ireland where they led worship in the streets.
The band has changed members over the years, but the one constant has been a deep love for
God and a commitment to seeking God’s heart and presence in worship.
Saturday, October 22, 2011 - General Session
KEYNOTE SPEAKERS: Jim Biscardi, Jr. & Bruce Pajot
JIM BISCARDI, JR.: Jim is founder of Mantle Ministries. He has been with New Jersey Christian
Ministries for 15 years – 11 years as its president. Both of these ministries are valuable teaching arms of the
Church. He’s a Bronze Star recipient, and has been teaching and making disciples of Christ for 37 years.
Before retiring and working full time for the Lord, he supervised 150 people with 24 subordinate supervisors.
He developed a Biblically-based leadership philosophy that helped win the top quality awards from the President
of the United States, the Governor of New Jersey, and the Secretary of Defense. He has served as a teacher,
deacon, treasurer, home Bible study leader, and men’s group leader for churches here and overseas. Besides
speaking at many major secular leadership conferences, he’s done many Christian retreats, special Sunday School classes, CE
workshops, and Christlike leadership seminars for men and women. He was also invited to do a pastors school in Tabuk,
Philippines. Jim is also a columnist for the Tri-State Voice, Christian Life Times, and The Love Express Christian newspapers.
He’s authored eight books, published in the U.S., India and Africa. All proceeds from his books and speaking go toward supplying
FREE books to pastors, missionaries, Bible schools, and church members in India and Africa. His books are available on
www.amazon.comand www.barnesandnoble.comand other book outlets. As he retires as NJCM president, Jim’s legacy includes
many thousands of Christians being better equipped in ministry, many young people coming to Christ through the Youth Rally, and
a revived spirit of unity between Christians of different cultures, geographic areas, and denominations.
BRUCE PAJOT: Bruce is the incoming President of New Jersey Christian Ministries. He has served on
the NJCM board for the last three years as the workshop coordinator. He is a minister and a licensed counselor
in New York and New Jersey. He has served as a pastor in two churches in New Jersey. He pioneered the
UMASS Lowell Christian Fellowship, led regional youth organizations in Connecticut, and directed a Christian
Coffeehouse ministry for eight years in the 70’s. Bruce’s rich background of experience infuses his work as a
minister and counselor, and enables him to relate to a wide range of human experience. He is a lifelong learner
who has been educated at twelve colleges and universities in six states. He has worked in such diverse fields as
nuclear engineering, real estate sales and investments, software development, high school education, and as a public speaking
consultant. As a counselor, Bruce provides counseling to individuals, couples, and families. He has worked with hundreds of
individuals and couples with various situations and issues. He leads marriage retreats and men’s groups. He has led over 300
marriage workshops, and has specialized certification in methodology for helping couples improve their marriages. He developed
and performs a set of guitar-based relationship songs utilized in marriage workshops. He is co-author of the Montefiore Supporting
Healthy Marriage Curriculum and the Montefiore Life Skills Curriculum for high school students. He is author of the Pajot Men’s
Curriculum. He has been married to Marilyn, a Cuban American, for 36 years and has two grown daughters. He holds a B.S. in
Nuclear Engineering from UMASS Lowell, a M.Div. from Princeton Theological Seminary and a M.A. in Counseling from Alliance
Graduate School of Counseling, Nyack College.
SPECIAL WORSHIP: SOMETHING NEW
We are doing something new this year for leading worship in our General Session.
We’ve created an NJCM worship team which is a collaborative effort representing
many of the churches that participate in the convention. The team is focused on giving
glory to Our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ and will be leading worship using songs
that tie back to our theme verse this year: “The Lord is our refuge and strength –
a present help in time of trouble.” Psalm 46:1.
