Programme - Waltham Forest Gang Show
Waltham Forest
Scouts
We’re riding along on the crest of a wave
And the sun is in the sky,
All our eyes on the distant horizon
Look out for passers-by.
We’ll do the hailing
While other ships are round us sailing
We’re riding along on the crest of a wave
and the world is ours
The Gang Show is inspired by the late Ralph Reader CBE and includes some of his songs- the copyright is held by the Scout Association

Hello, and welcome to our show!
I’m sure you will have a wonderful time with our Gang; I know that I have over the 4 months of rehearsals that have gone
into this show. You’ll be able to see just how hard they have all worked, and I’m sure you’ll agree that they represent all
that’s great about the young people we have the privilege to work with in Scouting & Guiding.
This year we’re celebrating 40 years of Gang Show in Waltham Forest, and that’s made me think about the number of
young people that have performed with our show over the past 39 years. For some, Gang Show becomes part of your life
forever, for others, they take part only once. But whichever one it is, I truly believe that being part of a Gang that work
so hard for a prolonged period is a hugely rewarding experience that fulfils part of our commitment to help these young
people become useful members of their communities.
I asked the parents of this year’s cast just what changes they’ve seen in their children since they joined the Gang, here
are just a couple of the replies:
“Our son thoroughly enjoys joining the Gang Show rehearsals every Sunday as he feels part of the family and wouldn’t
miss it for the world. It has improved his confidence immensely which has shown in the results of his latest LAMDA
exam - he passed with distinction. He is already looking forward to joining the gang again next year!”
“The Gang Show really increased his confidence last year, or I don’t think he would have even joined the Orchestra”
You’ll see from this programme just how many people are involved in making our show a success, and I’m truly grateful
to each and every one of them for the time and energy they devote to supporting the young people on stage.
Likewise to you, our audience, thank you for coming to support us. Those of you who have been before will know we’re
not formal here; we encourage you to sing along when you know the words, and to tap your feet and clap your hands
when you don’t!
Enjoy your time with us, and we look forward to seeing you again next year.

Thanks . . .
Under normal circumstances we would not mention individual members of the ‘Gang’, but there has to be an exception
for various people this year!
Over many years, Richard Sams’ has had various roles, such as a very animated cast member, a production co-ordinator,
a co-producer and, more lately, overall Show Director. Sadly, at the end of this week he will be stepping down as a
mainstay in the organisation and production of Gang Show to concentrate on his other Scouting role as Deputy District
Commissioner for Waltham Forest South.
2014 DC Article
I am sure as you settle back you may be thinking of the Voice, X Factor, Britain’s got talent or even Strictly Come
Dancing. Well I can tell you in this 40th anniversary of our Gang Show we have the lot and some more besides!
Tonight you are in for a treat.
All of the “Gang” on stage, behind the curtains, around the hall and foyer as well as many invisible helpers have
worked as a great team, some for nearly a year, especially for you tonight. All our many volunteers have given their
time freely to put on this wonderful show. I am sure that you will take the opportunity tonight to recognise all their
hard work in the usual way.
The enthusiasm of our youngsters (and those not so young) is absolutely amazing, from the start of the year, as the
show comes together it is very rewarding to see the youngsters and helpers develop new skills and confidence as
well a great team spirit. It is especially wonderful to see hidden talents revealed by those on stage. I invite you to
take a few minutes in the interval to view some of the Show’s history in the foyer.
Everyone does not just go away with the reward of being part of a fabulous team. Where possible we take the opportunity for
all involved to learn and capture the experience though our national award schemes. With the older Scouts they can use this to
help achieve the Duke of Edinburgh awards, Chief Scout Awards and our most important award, the Queen’s Scout Award. All of
these help not only to develop our young people but importantly genuinely increase their opportunity to secure a job and a career,
especially in these challenging times. Many I have chatted with over the years have said that Scouting played a part in developing
a career or unlocking a chance (me included, so I know it’s true). We all as Leaders understand this and strive to help our scouts
and in turn our community.
To finish I won’t say “I hope you enjoy the show tonight” because I know you will! What I will say is please free to
“go wild” with your applause and cheers for all those who brought this great evening especially for you, let them know
what you think!
Howard | District Commissioner | Waltham Forest South District
Richard has good-humouredly led the show-shaping team and introduced some brilliant new ideas. He has brainstormed with our young people during the planning of Gang Show and has captured their ideas. This has meant that
our Shows have had a more modern feel, whilst still maintaining the ethos of Ralph Reader’s original dream. It would
be impossible to fully evaluate just how much time and effort Richard has given to the Show over many years. We will
greatly miss his sense of fun and enthusiastic approach, and wish him success and fulfilment in his new role.
Last year Sue Handley stepped down after nine years of being responsible for the Show wardrobe team, and the design
and making of hundreds of wonderful costumes. She also set up an excellent, comprehensive costume store at County
Headquarters. She paid great attention to the detail of the costumes and, with the hard work of her team, this resulted
in an amazingly colourful show. Sue always approached her role with the view that what she and her team were doing
was ‘for the youngsters’, and she will be missed by all the Gang Show team.
At the end of this year’s show, we will also be saying goodbye to Colin Rollinson who after 19 years as a supporter
backstage, and a master of imagination and design, will be putting the lid on the paint pots. Over the years, Colin has
produced many realistic, and sometimes wacky, props, and these have enormously added to the overall wonder of Gang
Show. He and Chris Warner have made an unbeatable duo, and his skills will be hugely missed.
Finally, as we celebrate this special year, I cannot close without mentioning two very important people - Joan Holder
and Alan Mears - who have been actively involved in all of the 40 shows, whether at Lloyd Park, Walthamstow, or here
at Chingford Assembly Hall. It would take too long to list all the help and support they have tirelessly given, but
needless to say, without people like Joan and Alan, who have given so much of themselves over the years, Scouting and
Guiding would not enjoy the success it has today.
So, to you all, a huge THANK YOU from Waltham Forest Scouts and Guides for everything that you have done for our young
people and good luck with whatever task you take on next.

I have been involved with Girlguiding UK for almost twenty five years and during this time I have run weekly meetings for
Rainbows, Brownies and Senior Section, chaired district and division meetings, organised outings and weekends away and
the one question I get asked on numerous occasions is ‘Why do you do it?’
If I try to answer that when I’m chasing my tail trying to get everything done, I’m not sure I have an answer, but then on
occasions such as this, I have the answer right in front of me.
Supporters of the Scout Movement
To see the young people of our borough putting their time, energy and commitment into something such as this Gang Show
is both rewarding and fulfilling for me. As I watch them grow in stature and confidence whilst having fun and learning life
skills, then I know that this is the answer to why I do it.
One stop suppliers of the complete range of printed products

Week by week they learn to work as a team and come to realise that whether theirs is a small part away from the limelight
or a leading role, none of this would happen without everyone playing their part.
