Your Dining Hall Memories
Chef Richard Krejcarek, General Manager & Executive
Chef for Sodexo Dining at Wayland Academy, is so
beloved that the 2013-14 yearbook was dedicated to
him. For our next issue of the Greetings, we’d like you
to share your dining memories from Wayland years
past (both the good and the… interesting). Please send
them to: [email protected] or mail them to:
Greetings
Wayland Academy, 101 N. University Ave., Beaver Dam, WI 53916
8
Welcome
My tenure at Wayland has lasted for 36 years
now, and I can count the number of colleagues
I have shared through the duration of that
time on one hand. That is why this issue of the
Greetings and our Annual Report brings me the
odd pairing of delight and personal sadness
when I see history teacher Diane Alpaugh listed
among the faculty members who retired at
the end of last school year. She leaves us after
40 years at Wayland. Mitch Disch spent 27 years teaching physics at the
Academy, and Mary Irwin taught music here for the last 14 years.
It is difficult enough to say goodbye to seniors who have spent four
years in our classrooms. These three are graduating with 81 years of
service to the students of Wayland Academy.
14
We often reference the pillars of Wayland Hall as the source of our
strength and stability, but nothing we do here is possible without pillars
such as Diane, Mitch, and Mary, and their constant presence on campus
and in our classrooms will be missed.
Nonetheless, the new faculty we introduce this year and the progress
we continue to make as a school community and educational institution
make me proud and give me confidence, confidence well beyond hope,
that Wayland will continue to evolve, grow, and provide our students
with a world-class educational experience right here in our small
Wisconsin city.
Our continued strength across the curriculum, our new STEAM
program, our upgrades to classroom technology, the renovation of Swan
Library, and maintenance of facilities across campus that improve every
area of our students’ experience at Wayland Academy, all of it would be
impossible without your support.
27
Thank you for all you do and have done for our school and students in
the past, and we look forward to working hard and building upon our
159 year legacy in the year to come.
Sincerely,
Joseph A. Lennertz H`86

Year End Departmental Report
FINANCIAL YEAR 2013-14
We are proud of the hard work of our students, faculty, and staff over the past
year. Wayland Academy continues to live up the high standards established by
our founders as we approach the school’s 160th anniversary. The sections that
follow highlight just a few aspects of the 2013-14 fiscal and academic year.
Academics
Wayland welcomes three new faculty members this
school year. Chip Miller (keyboard, music), Anna
Stern (history), and Tyler Hill `09 (physics) have
begun their new roles on campus. You can read more
about them on page 6.
We are also excited for the launch of our new Science
Technology Engineering Arts and Mathematics
(STEAM) program. Enrollment is already full for
the year ahead.
Our average scores for the Advanced Placement
exams taken in May exceeded the averages for
Wisconsin and the United States:
Average AP Exam Score
(Maximum Score=5)
Wayland Academy 3.18
Wisconsin3.11
Nationally2.87
A number of our faculty also continue to pursue
advanced degrees: David Russell (chemistry), James
Cleary (theology), and Scott Fitzgerald (sports
administration and management).
Admission
Activity in the Admission Office continues to be
strong. Although the Academy graduated one of
our largest classes in recent memory in June, the
incoming class has surpassed that number. At
time of press, we opened the school year with 185
students, all of whom are well-qualified and worthy
of Wayland admission.
2 Greetings September 2014
Our retention number projects to be better than
average and slightly better than it was a year ago.
This is a great compliment to our faculty and staff
and a testament to the continuing high quality of
a Wayland education. We continue to encourage
alumni and friends of Wayland to spread the good
word and refer students to our office. If you have any
questions about how you can serve as an ambassador
to Wayland Academy, please call the Admission
Office at (800) 860-7725 or write us at admission@
wayland.org.
A dva n c e m e n t
This was a very interesting year in the area
of Advancement. While Total Giving exceeded
$970,000, we saw an unprecedented shift from
unrestricted (Academy Fund) giving to more specific,
targeted giving.
We are looking at ways to accommodate the
passions of donors who want to contribute to specific
initiatives while still fulfilling our need for the
critical support provided by the Academy Fund. This
is an issue that many private secondary schools and
universities are facing presently.
We are pleased to welcome Andrew McDonnell
to the Advancement Office as our Director of
Communications. Andrew has returned to Wayland,
where he formerly taught English for four years. His
expertise in social media and other digital outreach
strategies will be an instrumental part of our
fundraising plan going forward.

Alumni Reunion Weekend is fast approaching and
Director of Alumni Relations Kendall Vingua `02 is
actively working to ensure that our milestone classes
will enjoy a fun, memory-filled trip back to Wayland.
Registration is open so make your plans today!
Athletics
Wayland athletics concluded a successful 2013-14
school year with several athletes advancing to state
finals in the Spring. Three track and field athletes
qualified for the state meet, where Alex Idonije `16
captured 4th place in the triple jump and Maggie
Sanderson `15 set a school record and placed 9th in
the pole vault. Jeff Birori `15 also qualified but was
unable to attend. In boys tennis, Jason Jiang `14
battled his way to the state tennis meet.
As we begin the 2014-15 school year, Wayland will
find a number of significant changes. We say farewell
to Athletic Director Luke Houdek who has been at
Wayland for five years in a number of capacities and
wish him well. We are excited to welcome, in turn,
new Athletic Director Phil Tallman who comes to us
from Cambria-Friesland. You can read more about
Mr. Tallman on page 6.

Also new this school year, Wayland joins the
Trailways Conference in athletics. You can view our
athletics schedules and up-to-date results by visiting

Student Life
We continue to expand the Life Skills program with
dedicated time for programming and club meetings
during the academic day. This year, the Life Skills
curriculum will focus on the specific needs of
students in each grade, from adjusting to Wayland to
transitioning to college. We will now have an entire
speaker series as an additional component of this
program.
protocol is in line with that of other schools and
organizations, allowing for a more seamless response
in times of crisis.
S u s ta i n a b i l i t y
Wayland continues its pursuit of an ever greener
campus, increasing the school’s environmental
and financial sustainability in ways large and
small. Sophie Willihnganz `15 worked on a water
conservation project in her Environmental Science
Transportation for school breaks will be more
convenient for students and families; we will now
transport students all the way to Milwaukee and
Chicago. A faculty member will accompany students
to help when there are travel delays and other
issues.
Our new multicultural club and expanded diversity
programming will help us celebrate the amazing
global community we have here on campus.
Finally, we continue to refine our campus crisis
management procedures. Working with local
authorities, we will ensure that our response
class last school year, and thanks to her work and
the efforts of Sodexo maintenance, rainwater barrels
were installed at the base of downspouts on Wayland
Hall and Warren Cottage. The rain collected
there can be used to water the flowers around the
entrances to both residence halls.
In addition, we have begun to over-winter some
of the geraniums that were previously replaced
every year with new flowers purchased from a local
nursery. Some of the geraniums near Janik Terrace
were transplanted to pots at the end of last autumn
and kept in the Discovery Hall greenhouse through
the winter. They were then replaced this spring and
are blooming beautifully. n

A Fond Farewell...
D i a n e A l pa u g h H`83
It is impossible
to summarize
the impact Ms.
Alpaugh has
had on Wayland
Academy and
the students
she has taught,
coached, and worked alongside
for 40 years. As chair of the
History Department, coach of the
field hockey and ski teams, dorm
supervisor, as someone who helped
build sets for Wayland’s theatrical
productions, and in 100 other ways
Ms. Alpaugh led by example.
Retiring after four decades, she
will miss many things at Wayland.
“Field hockey is number one on
the list,” she said. “It’s always
exciting to start a new year. At the
end of every school year, you sit
back and you’re glad it’s over, but
then you think about things you
can do better.” She will also miss
teaching: “The great thing about
teaching is you get a new start
every year. You get a new group of
kids each year, a new chemistry.”
During her first year of retirement,
Ms. Alpaugh intends to stay in
touch with Wayland, watch field
hockey games, and attend theater
productions. After that year, she
and her partner Sandra will move
into a home they have purchased
near the ocean in Delaware.
She noted, “Wayland’s in good
hands, we have some outstanding
faculty. But I will miss it, there’s
no two ways around it.”
M i t c h D i s c h H` 93
M a ry I rw i n H` 14
From that day until his retirement
this June, Mr. Disch established
a reputation at Wayland as a
demanding and enthusiastic
teacher whose students left his
classroom extraordinarily wellprepared for college and the
careers that followed. Looking
back, Mr. Disch reflected, “I’ll
miss teaching. More often than
not, it was fun. I felt like I was
accomplishing something. And
I enjoy doing the physical tricks,
like lying on a bed of nails, walking
on broken glass... setting off the
smoke alarm once in a while.
Blowing things up.”
Some of her fondest memories
of her time at Wayland revolve
around the opportunity to work
with, “some amazing, talented
kids,” she said. “One of the great
parts of the job was just how it
broadened my world, here in little
old Beaver Dam I had connections
to the world, Korea and China and
Germany, Moldova, Africa, and
that’s something I wouldn’t have
imagined when I was just teaching
piano in town.”
Mr. Disch was
hired 32 years
ago at Wayland
by the only
college professor
to have flunked
him on a test.
The Academic
Dean at the time, the late Dr.
Bill McCutcheon, had been Mr.
Disch’s literature professor in
college. In spite of that failed
test, when a science position
opened at Wayland Mr. Disch was
encouraged to apply, interviewed,
and was hired all on the same day.
Retirement for Mr. Disch has
already included trips with his
wife Dee to northern England,
Poland, and Hawaii. He has
volunteered to lead a non-credit
AP Physics prep class once a week
at Wayland this year and to help
with the new robotics club.
Mrs. Irwin
began at
Wayland as a
music teacher
in 2000 on
a part-time
basis, teaching
piano lessons
and working with the choir.
Over the 14 years that followed,
her responsibilities gradually
increased to a full-time position
that touched numerous areas.
She helped establish Wayland’s
Chamber Ensemble, worked with
students on piano and strings,
and accompanied countless
performances on the piano.
In retirement, Mrs. Irwin says
her plans are to, “play and pray.”
She will be traveling with her
husband Tom to Ireland, London,
and Wales in the near future and
spending time improving at jazz
piano and the Celtic harp, as well
as continuing to participate in area
music ensembles.

from the
2014 C ommencement E xercises
Commencement at Wayland straddles the bittersweet line between conclusions and
beginnings. Rarely is the realization of a conclusion so distinct, though, as it was during
Commencement Exercises for the Class of 2014. The Commencement Speaker this year
was the retiring Chair of Social Studies and History, Diane Alpaugh H`83 who provided the
students of Wayland one final lesson to cap her 40-year career.
Sunday, May 18, 2014 was a gorgeous, sunny day to say farewell, good luck, and thank you to
the Class of 2014 and some of its brightest guiding lights.
I too have been challenged over the years, never
more so than in taking on this speech. For those
of you who have had to do presentations in my
class – you are avenged. But challenges are
also opportunities. And I would like to take this
opportunity to extend my gratitude. It has been a
privilege to be a part of this community. I take
great pride in having been able to work with such
a talented, dedicated, and caring faculty over
these 40 years.
We may laugh like Ms. Boucher, raise one of our
eyebrows like Mr. Houdek, or know a random fact for
no reason like Mr. Osvald. These are the times that
will remind us of the great people who guided us and
helped us achieve our dreams.

Instead of one charge this morning, I will leave you with two
quotes. The first, from Ellen Johnson Sirleaf (the first female
elected head of state in Africa) who said: “If your dreams do
not scare you, they are not big enough.” The second, from
Howard Thurman (an influential author, civil rights activist,
theologian and educator) who said: “Don’t ask yourself
what the world needs. Ask yourself what makes you
come alive and then go do that. Because what the world
needs is people who have come alive.”
All the best to you. Congratulations. And don’t forget you
can come home again!

I feel like we have all had those moments here where it seems
like we are so engrossed in a single moment, a single problem,
that we find ourselves trapped, trying to observe all the multiworlds to see what could, would, should have happened, so much
so that we forget that this one moment is only part of a blur
of events, experiences, and emotions, both good and bad, that
constantly whip past our observable sphere. And this is where
we are at fault. Instead of trying to be prescient, why not merely
let Schrödinger’s wave function do its job. Let’s focus instead on
enjoying the work and the experiences that have lead us thus far,
both happy and sad, and continue living the current ones to the
best of our ability.

We are blessed at Wayland to have parents, coaches, teachers, and mentors all
working to help us find the new ideas hidden in our minds. Personally, I’d be
remiss if I didn’t thank my teachers who helped me journey into my mind. I want
to especially thank Ms. Alpaugh and Mr. Cleary. You two helped me find my inner
athlete and helped me be proud of my own strength. Thank you, Mr. Disch for having
a never-ending supply of challenges for me. Mr. Shoop, you have been the perfect
mentor for me. Thank you for reminding me to get into trouble every once in a while.
And thank you to all the mentors. You truly have no idea how much you have shaped
the lives of this class and all the students here at Wayland. Dr. Lake, you have
inspired and nurtured me above and beyond the call of duty. Tu es quam optima

It’s the norm at Wayland to hold doors
open for each other, be respectful in the
dining hall, and to treat each other with
kindness. We recognize the importance of
character, and that is why Wayland puts
such an emphasis on it. I can’t define the
way our character has changed during
our time here, but the individual changes
I see in my classmates give me hope that
I have changed in much the same way.

CAMPUS
FACILITIES
UPGRADES
Kimberly Chapel received striking new doors, and its bell tower underwent much-needed repairs to its brick exterior.
14 Greetings September 2014
When students leave for the summer, many people picture campus being packed up in
mothballs for three months or disappearing into the mist like Brigadoon. Nothing could be
further from the truth.
Summer is the prime opportunity for Director of Facilities Rob Jens and the Wayland Sodexo
maintenance staff and outside contractors to make the larger changes that would interfere
with student life and academics during the school year.
The summer of 2014 was no exception, as Swan Library and Kimberly Chapel underwent
significant work and other areas around campus received the sort of attention that may not
catch the eye but are crucial to the effective and safe operation of our school.
Thanks to an endowment established by
the estate of Mary Swan `25, Swan Library
was able to receive significant upgrades
this summer. Carpeting and doors were
replaced; walls were refinished and painted;
the fireplace and mantel were repaired; and
new seating, tables, and shelving will join
older furniture that was polished and reupholstered as part of the project.
A gift from Retired Trustee John B.
McKinstry H`10 provided a new security
system for most of the buildings on campus.
Equipment and
furniture in the
new STEAM lab in
Discovery Hall was
installed, thanks
to the generosity of
donors at the 38th
Annual Spring Gala
and Auction.
Small repairs such
as replacing the
steps, ramp, and
front door to Schoen
Health Center
are unglamorous
but crucial to the
comfort and safety of
Wayland’s students.
Even the chickens
alongside Discovery
Hall received a much
improved chicken coop.

Gift
Recognition
Last year was an outstanding year for Wayland Academy. We continue to provide
students with a unique educational experience that will leave them prepared not
just as students heading to college, but as young men and women embarking upon
life. Our devotion to knowledge and character remains strong, and none of it would
be possible without the nearly $1 million in donations provided by you, our alumni
and friends, over the past year. Your gifts play a critical role in keeping Wayland
alive and thriving, and, on behalf of our students, we cannot thank you enough.
Heritage Society Donors
Alumni and friends of Wayland
Academy become members of the
Heritage Society by including
Wayland in their estate plans or by
making the Academy a beneficiary
in their charitable trusts, annuities,
wills, and life insurance policies.
Wayland is grateful to the following
alumni and friends who have decided
to provide future sustaining support
to the Academy through the Heritage
Society.

An Evening at Wayland:
The 38thAnnual
Spring Gala &
Auction
April 26, 2014 was an evening to remember.
Never mind the incredible food, the carving stations, the fresh sushi and seafood bar, and the great conversation as Wayland’s alumni, parents, friends, faculty, and staff mingled in the transformed Lindsay Complex. Disregard the great live music, including performances by the Wayland Academy Choir and Almost
Famous. Pay no heed as made-to-order crepes, coffee, and espresso capped a delicious evening.
At the heart of this fantastic evening was the goal of raising funds to help support the students of Wayland
Academy. The Spring Gala and Auction is Wayland’s largest fundraising event of the year, and though it
wears the guise of a great party, it is an important source of revenue for the Academy.
This year, it was an especially successful event, and Wayland is grateful to the following individuals and
organizations that donated or purchased items in the auction and helped support our students:
Discovering knowledge and building character. Together.

The Gift of
STEAM
A portion of the proceeds from
the 2014 Live Auction benefitted
the STEAM project, an interdisciplinary academic program focused on offering our students a
pre-engineering curriculum that
incorporates not just science and
mathematics, but also the arts.
In addition to the bidding
traditional to a live auction,
the Gala once again featured a
reverse auction. Bidders were
invited to raise their paddles
and make a gift towards purchasing equipment and software for the foundation of the
STEAM project.
They responded in tremendous
fashion, and when bidding
concluded, alumni, parents,
friends, faculty, and staff had
contributed enough to equip
a classroom in Discovery Hall
with new laptops, 3D printers,
a 3D scanner, new furniture,
robotics kits, and the software
necessary to make everything
function.
Wayland students have already
been directly affected by this
generosity. The school’s faculty
and staff worked hard over the
summer, and the STEAM lab is
now up and running this Fall
semester.
