This activity also includes a follow up to
schools for the next 5 years as a social
responsibility mission of the Library.
Plagiarism Prevention Training Activity
To create e-Theses added to The Digital Collection
of UNINET/ThaiLIS Project, the Library & Knowledge
Center has introduced ‘Turn it in’ software to scan
theses and dissertations in order to prevent
plagiarism. From our experience, both our librarians
and IT staff expanded their roles to support teaching
and learning. Turn it in was used as an academic
tool utilized by teachers and students to detect
plagiarism.
Library Automation Network Development
The Library & Knowledge Center has implemented
the Innovative System of Innopac Ltd. to be the
library automation system for managing all kinds
of material in the libraries for almost 20 years.
Since the beginning, there were only 15 libraries of
Mahidol University using this software. Due to the
sustainability of the system and the expertise of
the Library IT staff, many autonomous libraries come
to share the system enabling them to provide one
stop services for more library users wherever they
are.

OUTSTANDING PROJECTS
Rabies Prevention at Mahidol University
and the surrounding communities in
2011-2012 : Faculty of Veterinary Science
The welfare of homeless dogs:
Faculty of Veterinary Science
The project was conducted in the concept of World
Rabies’ Day, which consists of the exhibition and
activity, providing public knowledge and student
training. The Faculty of Veterinary Science, Mahidol
University has coordinated with Salaya municipalty
Veterinary volunteer camp and surrounding
communities to provide rabies vaccination for
dogs in the following areas; Mahasawat subdistrict,
Mahidol University (Kanchanaburi campus),
Phuttamonthon district, Taweewattana district
and Mahidol University (Salaya campus). There
were about 130 dogs that have been vaccinated.
“Salaya Dog Shelter” (Baan Rak Maa Salaya) is a
project welfare for stray dogs that have been found
in the Mahidol University (Salaya campus) which
aims to develop a model for sustainable management
of stray dogs in the community. In January 2008,
Mahidol University assigned the Faculty of Veterinary
Science to manage, control and coordinate this
project in order to solve stray dog problems in
Salaya campus. Salaya Dog Shelter provides a
one-stop solution to this problem by providing
healthcare and disease prevention, training
activities, finding the new homes and other
activities for stray dogs. Moreover, this project is a
model for sustainable management of stray dogs in
the community by coordinating between instructors,
staff, and students of the Faculty of Veterinary
Science, Mahidol University and together with
people in surrounding area. It is also a study place
for veterinary students, students in other faculties
and students in other universities.
Thus, in the academic year 2011-2012 the
Veterinary Science Student Club has conducted
this project continuously to provide rabies vaccination
and educate knowledge to people in surrounding
communities. This is a continuous project of the
past year. It also aims to build public awareness in
veterinary students and to demonstrate the rabies
prevention and control since rabies is one of the
important zoonotic diseases in Thailand. The
Veterinary Science Student Club will organize and
implement this project in every year.
Mahidol University (Salaya campus) can control
the numbers of stray dogs in campus area. There
are many institutions visiting Salaya Dog Shelter
to study and use it as a model for their workplaces.
Veterinary students have more knowledge and
experiences in solving stray dogs problems which
they can educate and lead communities
to solve the problem correctly.

JodJum Device: Faculty of Engineering
Dearndee device: Faculty of Engineering
JodJum is a Braille NoteTaker device that helps
the blinds taking note easily. The recorded data
will be output by voice and it can connect to the
mobile phone and computers to transfer the data.
It weighs only 100 grams and is easy to carry.
Students and a professor from the Electrical
Engineering department, the Faculty of Engineering,
Mahidol University created an assistive device,
called “Dearndee”, which can rehabilitate foot-drop
symptoms of paralyzed patients. They conducted
the “Mahidol Dearndee for King” project, donating 85
Dearndee devices, and demonstrating how to use
the device to the patients at Ramathibodi Hospital,
Siriraj Hospital, Golden Jubilee Medical Center,
and the Faculty of Physical Therapy of Mahidol
University.
“JodJum” is a co-project of students from the
Department of Electrical Engineering: Mr. Pattaravit
Kijjettanee, Mr. Montree Tangprayunlert, Mr. Sompoch
Aranphan, and Ms. Jiraporn Trakontanasuntorn
from the Computer Science program, International
College. Their project advisors are Associate
Professor Dr. Zeng Lertmanorat from the Faculty of
Engineering, Dr. Boonyanit Mathayomchan from the
International College, and Mr. Tam Jatunam from
Ratchasuda College.
The inventors submitted “JodJum” to the “True
Innovation Award 2012” contest, held by True
Corporation Public Company Limited. This contest
was divided into 2 sections, IDEA SEED (presenting
the concept of an innovation with a business plan;
the innovation could be a model, or in process of
development); and INNOTREE (the contestants
needed to present their completed innovation to
the committee). The host also gave members of
the public an opportunity to submit their inventions,
and there were 1,300 entries in this competition.
“JodJum” won the first place of IDEA SEED in
“True Innovation Award 2012”.
In the future, “JodJum” will be given to schools
for the blind, nationally. The team aim to give 86
devices for celebrating the auspicious occasion of
His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej’s 86th
Birthday in 2013.
The inventors are graduate students from the
Electrical Engineering department, Faculty of
Engineering, Mahidol University: Mr. Jirawat
Jittaprasoodwit, Mr. Ratikorn Chaiwattanattham,
and Mr. Apiwan Trangtakoon. Associate Professor
Dr. Zeng Lertmanorat from the Faculty of Engineering
is their project advisor.
The two inventors explained that the “Dearndee
device will stimulate the muscle to lift patients’
feet, and enable them to walk easily”. Associate
Professor Dr. Zeng Lertmanorat explained more
about the Dearndee device: “In many countries,
paralysis patients have this device, but 100,000
Thai paralysis patients do not have a chance to
use it, because the imported device costs 100,000
baht”. For this reason, the inventors determined to
create and develop the assistive device for
enhancing the quality of life in Thailand.
The “Mahidol Dearndee for King” project is
conducted to celebrate the auspicious occasion
of His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej’s 85th
Birthday. The team gave 85 Dearndee devices to
paralysis patients with no charge. They hoped
that the devices will be useful and help patients
live more comfortably.

The Red Cross Children Home Village:
Golden Jubilee Medical Center
The summary of this project is as follows:
Physical care: The children receive physical and
dental check-ups twice a year provided by GJMC
and Maha Chakri Sirindhorn Dental Hospital. In
general, they are healthier and less ill due to early
and continual care at GJMC, together with
education of foster mothers in caring and
prevention of respiratory diseases dissemination
resulting in lower cross infections. Besides, the
continual dental care solves their problems of
oral and dental health.
Nutritional care: The Institute of Nutrition has
supported and developed food and nutrition for
foster mothers continually like nutritional status
monitoring, hygiene of food preparation and
handling for children, individual/village watch out
for nutritional status including activities to strengthen
family relationship such as vegetable gardening.
Discussion with them found that the foster mothers
could apply training knowledge to appropriately
portion food in a serving to a certain extent. Some
portions still needs improvement and suggestion.
In addition, the project staff records children’s
body weights and heights for each measurement
on modern growth curves to track their
development effectively.
Psychological care: Both psychological teams
from the Faculty of Medicine Siriraj Hospital and
Ramathibodi Hospital, which comprises of a child
psychiatrist, a psychologist, a psychiatric nurse
and a social worker, have paralleled many activitieseducation on child raising, mind development for
the foster mothers and feedback visits for questions
and advices. To manage and monitor continually
the children’s emotion and behavior, medical staff
and residents are in charge for each home.
Conclusively, the children have much better
improvement in mind and emotion. The foster
mothers have love, unity and teamwork in raising
children together, not isolated as before.
Child development activation and evaluation: with
helps of pediatricians and psychologists in child
development, and researchers from the National
Institute for Child and Family Development, the
developmental assessment showed every child
lags behind more than one area of development.
The foster mothers are scheduled to bring their
child to participate in games and positive behavior
support. They learn and apply to continually activate
in daily living with results in the outright better
mood - hilarious, smiling, more extrovert in talking
and playing. With more spoken words, they can
communicate in sentences (formerly only words
were uttered or none) and interact to questions. All
are results from the foster mothers who give them
more opportunities to speak up, listen more to
them and build a timely positive relationship through
playing and conversation.
Environmental development for safety: from the
Faculty of Medicine Ramathibodi Hospital, the
environment and safety team visited the village and
surveyed the common grounds and each house
interiors, suggesting an appropriate redesign like
removal of risky play things and electric plug covers
to prevent electrocution.
Ethics and conscience awareness enhanced in
children and care givers: GJMC staff asked monks
and nuns with psychological expertise in counseling
and child care to help partake in the project, focusing
on the foster mothers to have an insightful role in
child caring on the basis of love, compassion and
wholehearted bonding. They are motivated to
realize their own values in the role of child caring
like begetting goodness. On an in-depth counseling
visit for each home, the foster mothers can freely
talk about problems and how they deal with the
child’s emotion and behavior. The team then provides
suggestions as appropriate. The atmosphere is
so warm and friendly that anxiety levels are clearly
lower than the prior measurement. Besides, the
children are imbibed to give through the village
arrangement for food offerings to monks on holidays
and putting aside their daily savings to contribute with
their foster mothers in giving alms. The progress is
clear, reflected from apparent love and deep bonding
between children and their foster mothers who also
gain more methodical knowledge, love, unity and
relationship in children caring.
Mahidol University has a great collaboration to
support the project of The Red Cross Children
Home Village under Thai Red Cross Children
Patronage Charity. Both levels of support are
from the university executives and various faculties.
Networks have been formed on stream to result
in smoothness and continuum of the project,
enabling child growth developments in both
physical and mental. The staff are committed to
improve the foster mothers on good methods of
caring and by that, they gain knowledge and
experience. They are able to take care of their own
families even when they are off the foster mother
role and to be a model of good mother for the
country. Mahidol University honorably appreciates
Her Royal Highness kind regards to entrust the
university in support of the Red Cross Children
Home Village Project. We are all deeply impressed
with the promise to improve and sustain effectively
the substitute family.
The Physical Therapy Center:
Faculty of Physical Therapy
The Physical Therapy Center, Faculty of Physical
Therapy, Mahidol University has been established
since 2001. The aims of this Center are to provide
physical therapy and occupation therapy services
and to support the practical work of physical and
occupation therapy students. In the year 2012,
the Physical Therapy Center provided the total
number of services to 75,987 visits. The Physical
Therapy Center provides specialized physical
therapy services including musculoskeletal system,
neurological system and pediatrics. The Center
also provides specialized occupation therapy
services including physical disability, psychological
problem and pediatrics. Moreover, the Physical
Therapy Center creates the services of sport physical
therapy and scoliosis. The scoliosis patients
underwent “Schroth Technique” intervention by
certified physical therapists.
Nowadays, the number of the elderly in Thailand
tends to increase. The elderly have physical
changes due to degenerative changes of functional
bodily systems. Most of the elderly encounter chronic
diseases such as high blood pressure, diabetes
and heart disease etc. Some of the elderly try to
refrain from doing activities and have stationary
lifestyle to avoid accidents. Moreover, some
consume unhealthy food. As a consequence, the
Physical Therapy Center envisages the benefit of
stimulating the elderly to be happy with optimum
exercise and proper health care. Since the year
2012, the Physical Therapy Center has created
the new project “Physical Therapy and Occupation
Therapy in the Elderly” for providing them with
good health service.
