I hope everyone’s year is going smoothly. If you didn’t
have a chance to attend the NYSBDA Symposium in
March you missed an all-star line-up. Having Allan
McMurray, Dr. Tim Lautzenheiser and Dr. Timothy
Topolewski, among others in Liverpool, all on the same
weekend made the symposium very memorable.
The symposium does not happen without the
dedication and efforts of many people. First, I’d like to
thank the entire NYSBDA Board for their efforts in helping with many facets of running a symposium smoothly.
Working the registration table, moving equipment, and
introducing the clinicians are all tasks which need to be
accomplished and the board members were there to be
sure everything ran smoothly. Thank you to Melinda
Speidel for organizing the chaperones which is a monumental task. A special thanks to the chaperones for being great role models and stepping up to help to be sure
our students were safe and well taken care of.
Thank you to Scott LaVine, NYSBDA Webmaster. Scott is responsible for printing the certificates for
the performing groups and the honor band students. In
addition, Scott makes sure the website is up to date with
all information members need for the symposium.
NYSBDA’s equipment managers are one of the
most important people in helping the symposium run
smoothly. They organize with area schools to borrow
percussion equipment, music stands, sound equipment
and anything else that is needed on site. They pick up
the equipment, deliver it, set it up and return it at the
conclusion of the symposium. Becky Bizup, B.J. Boycheck, Craig Ellwood, and Terry Caviness handled the
responsibility this year. We thank them for all their efforts on behalf of NYSBDA.
Our three honor bands are one of the highlights
of every symposium. Our honor band chairs give of their
time for a full year working hard to bring in conductors
who will provide over 200 students with a memorable
musical experience every year. They also make sure everything on site runs smoothly. Thank you, Phil Pandori,
Mike Cordaro and Tim Savage for all their efforts.
Dave Wilber, NYSBDA Executive Director puts
in countless hours overseeing all that happens at the
symposium. Due to his organization every detail is taken
care of each year at our
symposium. Thank you
Dave!
Finally, a HUGE thanks to Brian Doyle, 1st VicePresident of NYSBDA, for all his efforts in organizing an
amazing array of performing groups and clinicians. The
many positive comments about this year’s symposium
are testament to the fantastic job Brian did. I’m sure
next year’s symposium will be even better.
I hope everyone has a successful conclusion to
their school year and a fantastic summer. Please consider joining us at the Summer Music Conference in Albany
on August 10-12. Melinda Speidel has assembled a great
line-up of clinicians, which will certainly get you going
in the right direction for the start of the school year.
On another note, I would like to encourage you
to be a part of a community band in your area. But,
more importantly, encourage your middle school and
high school students to participate in a local community
band if one is available to them. When I was in Junior
High School, my private teacher encouraged me to be
in a community band. As a student, it was great to play
with other adults and it was a great learning experience
as well as keeping me playing over the summer.
Finally, I would like to thank our members for
your continued support and encouragement.

2014 NYSBDA Symposium Review
Brian Doyle - 1st Vice President
Once again, an inspiring and successful Winter Symposium is now in the books. Many thanks are due to a host
of individuals and groups that made this conference such
a smooth operation and successful presentation. Such
an undertaking would be impossible without the earnest
dedication of NYSBDA Executive Board Members.
Thanks to Executive Director Dave Wilber for
attending to the myriad organizational and logistical
details behind the scenes. Facilitating this Symposium
would be impossible without the hours of service you
provide that no one ever sees. Thanks to treasurer
Michael Struzik for getting everyone registered and
getting the bills paid. Our hosts at the Holiday Inn and
Staybridge Suites deserve recognition for providing us
convenient accommodations under one roof, and for
their congenial convention and catering staff. To our
friends at Visual Technologies, particularly Ron Baran
– your assistance in providing flexible and fluid technical support to our presenters was invaluable. President
Robin DeSantis deserves credit for her patient guidance
and leadership through the process of contracting and
scheduling all the clinicians.
Michael Cordaro, Phil Pandori and Tim Savage,
along with all their staff and chaperones, deserve accolades for facilitating such wonderful and musical Honor
Bands. Many thanks to our guest conductors, Scott
LaVine, Susan Creasap and Denis DiBlasio, for providing our students with inspirational leadership during the
intensive rehearsal and performance process. Our musical future was, and is, in good hands. Once again, Ron
Sutherland offered his insights and inspirations to our
Honor Band participants – a highlight of their conference!
Rehearsals and performances would not have
been possible without generous donation of time and
equipment from several individuals and schools. Rebecca Bizup and Craig Elwood – assisted by Terry Caviness
and BJ Boycheck – deserve recognition for coordinating
the logistical efforts. Many thanks to the schools and
colleagues that lent equipment: Westhill High School
(Tony Mastrobattisto), Onondaga Hill Middle School
(Liz Buell), Solvay High School (Jerry Fitzgerald), and
Liverpool High School (Joe Filio). The stalwart crew
of the Syracuse University student chapter of NYSBDA
facilitated smooth transitions between performances.
Thanks to all for your efforts!
Gary Stith continues to
provide NYSBDA with
compelling and engaging personalities, and this
year’s guest, Allan McMurray, was no exception. We
are all excited that this valuable “Interview with a Legend”
endeavor continues with: Eugene Migliaro Corporon
(2015), John Whitwell (2016), and Ray Cramer (2017).
Our metaphorical larder is well-stocked! This year’s
Conducting Clinic incorporated a new twist, as student
conductors received tutelage from Professor McMurray.
We all look forward to the evolution of this clinic, and to
the insights that our future clinicians provide.
We need little reminder that without clinicians,
ensembles, and vendors, there would be no Symposium
at all. We thank all those who shared so generously their
time and talent as part of the educational
offerings this year. We also thank all our vendors and
sponsors, generous as well.
In particular, thanks are due to Dave Rivello and
the Eastman New Jazz Ensemble, and to the Southern
Tier Concert Band, for their enjoyable evening performances.
Of course, there would be no reason to have a
Symposium if it were not for you, our valuable colleagues
in NYSBDA. Your dedication to re-investing in your profession is what drives this whole endeavor. You are the
reason we exist, and you are the reason we expend this
much effort. We look forward to this continued partnership. Please let us know what we can do better in terms
of the Symposium experience. Who would you like to see
and hear? Do you have a colleague that has something
valuable to contribute to the membership? Do you?
You also can assist us by encouraging colleagues
that are not members of NYSBDA to join, and then encouraging them further – by bringing them to the 2015
Symposium. We look forward to seeing you and your
colleagues there!

2014 Summer Conference
Who's Who?......
Melinda Speidel - Summer Conference Chairman
I would like to extend a warm
welcome to all music teachers to
attend the 2014 Summer Conference that will be held in Albany on
Sunday, August 10 through Tuesday, August 12. It is the intent of
NYSBDA to sponsor sessions with
NYSSMA that are highly educational and fulfilling as we begin
the next academic school year with
excitement and vigor.
On Sunday, beginning at 1pm,
Melinde Poupore and Michael Struzik will be conducting two Reading
Band Sessions. Levels 1-3 will be
from 1-2:15 and Levels 4-6 will be
from 2:30-3:45. There will be a
slightly new format this year utilizing
ideas that have been floating around
for a while. Melinde and Mike have
chosen pieces that during their career have been ‘war horses that have
stood the test of time.’ We always love
to hear new music, but it is also helpful to review those
‘oldies but goodies’ that may have found their way near
the back of our closets that deserve some attention! In
addition, they will be recommending some marches that
they have found successful in NYSSMA Majors. Please
bring your instruments!
At 4-5:15, Eric Singer and CJ Giangreco from the
Albany music store John Keal Music Co. will hold a session on Instrumental Repair.
There will be two Director’s Jazz Band Rehearsals.
We are honored to have the
NYSBDA Executive Director,
David Wilber, be our Jazz Band
Director. The first rehearsal
will take place from 7-9:30
Sunday evening and the second
will take place on Monday (before the concert!) from 4-5:30. We would like to invite
you all to attend and watch a well-known New York state
band director work with the directors.
Our first Monday morning clinic (9-10:15) will be presented by Skaneateles Band Director Maureen VanVechten, in which she will demonstrate how she utilizes
SmartMusic with APPR.
Following that (10:30-11:45) will be Patrice Ma
latestinic from Skidmore College presenting on ‘Starting young hornists and
growing a section.’
Following the General Business Meeting
and the Keynote Speaker, Dr. Nathan
Buonviri from Temple University (widely
known for presenting across the country
and writing articles in such publications as ‘The Instrumentalist’) will give his first presentation on Aural Skills
for Instrumentalists from 2:15-3:30. Please bring your
instrument for this informative session!
His second presentation will be on Tuesday
morning (10:30-11:45) entitled ‘Essential Drumset for
Ensemble Directors’.
Tuesday morning begins again at 9am with an
APPR Roundtable for Band Directors. Each of the affiliates will be doing similar presentations
pertaining to their major area at this
time. Chad Shippee from Bolton
Central School and Jill Rubio from
Potsdam Central School will present their various approaches and the
session will continue with sharing
within the group. I’d like to think of
it as: "What can we do to make this
a learning experience that has lasting
and worthwhile value for all?"
Personally, I am excited about
these sessions and am looking forward to learning and
growing as a band director. As always, if you ever have
any suggestions, I encourage you to share them with myself or any other board member. Happy Summer and see
you soon!
