Be A Part of the Soon-To-Launch New Truckee.com Website!
After many months of developing a program to enhance
Truckee’s online presence, we’re excited to announce that we now
will have two distinct websites.
Truckee.com – The all new Truckee.com is now a tourism
promotion website, with information of interest to Truckee visitors. The tourism site is full of rich, colorful images that tell the
story of Truckee as a destination. Shopping, lodging, dining, winter
and summer activities, wedding, events, history and more are all
available in a clean, modern design.

TruckeeChamber.com – The all new TruckeeChamber.com
is a website specifically for Truckee Donner Chamber of Commerce. Linked to the tourism site (truckee.com), the new website
provides vastly improved opportunities for our members to promote their business, in addition to member profiles, testimonials,
an expanded Chamber programs section, and more.
Both websites include social media integration and sharing
capabilities.
The websites, were created in collaboration with CLM Design,
Advertising, and Interactive Media.
“The websites are a dramatic improvement on all levels and
were developed with strategic focus to better serve our members,
visitors, locals, and business community at large,” said Lynn Saunders, President/CEO.
There are many different levels of opportunities to promote
your business including enhanced listings with photos, videos, social media links, and more. Members can also promote deals and
special offerings.
The websites are scheduled for launch mid-September.
For more information about how to maximize your benefits as
a chamber member to the fullest on these websites, contact Linda
Pendleton, Membership Manager, at [email protected] or 530587-8808.

Chamber “Renewing Rewards”
Member Profile
Norwegian Wood Construction
Cottonwood Restaurant
Jon Traeger, Owner
Mike and Jennifer Blide, Owners
Jon, how long have you been in
business, and how long have you been
conducting business in Truckee?
I’ve lived here for 30 years
in Truckee, spending 27 of them
in my business. I am a general
building contractor and owner
of Norwegian Wood
Construction since 1985.
What is the nature of your business,
what goods or services do you provide?
I offer my clients,
Jon Traeger
personalized services as a
general building contractor as well as remodels, additions and new
homes. I have never built the same home twice!
Who are your clientele?
My clients are people referred to me that want personal
service and honesty. I work with their budget and build their dream.
In what ways does locating in Truckee particularly suit your needs?
Truckee is the type of community that survives despite whatever
the economy throws at us. That is achieved by staying true to buying
and supporting the locals.
What has been the most rewarding project undertaken since beginning business in
Truckee?
Building Stal Tre Hus (Steel Tree House) in Tahoe Donner,
which was constructed with my mom by my side for inspiration,
combined with the community's hands, support and belief in a
dream.
Conversely, what has been the greatest challenge overall to your business?
Surviving the onslaught of other builders that hire illegally, as
well as submitting unrealistic low bids that deceive, which they then
turn around and back-charge. Needless to say that aspect is
challenging.
David Smith, Jennifer and Mike Blide
Mike how long have you had Cottonwood restaurant?
My wife Jennifer started
Cottonwood with another partner on New Years’ Eve, 1989.
We met, dated, and were married
in very short order in 1995, and
have been muddling through ever
since.
We are a dinner house
(“lunch money should be saved
for fine wine at dinner”), and
strive to provide large, hearty
meals in an environment of com-
fort and camaraderie.
We are very fortunate to have a great mix of locals and tourists.
One cannot exist without the other and we are cognizant of the importance of our neighbors serving as marketing ambassadors for us. Additionally, the Chamber deserves the support of all local businesses, especially those who cater to tourists, because they are out there telling the
bigger story of our region. As service businesses, we then must attempt
to dazzle them enough to ensure a return visit. It is a valuable partnership in the best sense of the word.
What has been the most rewarding project since beginning business in Truckee?
The care and feeding of such an historic building has been a challenge, but also a labor of love. Our customers are fascinated with
Truckee and the Hilltop area’s history, and the photos in our Fireplace
Room. Maintaining a building built in 1928 out of salvaged railroad ties
will make a carpenter out of anyone.
What has been the greatest challenge overall to your business?
Snow…the prodigious amounts that cause travel problems for our
customers while also being the main attraction… and the flip side (as in
this past season) when the lack of snow keeps people from coming to
Tahoe.
What are some interests outside of work that you and your staff enjoy?
All that Truckee has to offer! We are fortunate to have a great
Parks and Recreation department.
What has been the most beneficial overall to your ability to conduct business in
Truckee?
Truckee is home to the people that make Tahoe tourism function,
and those people are also our customers. I also have to give a shout out
to my amazing staff, especially our executive chef, David Smith, who
has been on board for over 17 years, which is unheard of in the restaurant business. The best people keep showing up wanting to work for
us…go figure! My crew are constantly hucking themselves off of cliffs
on skis, boards and bikes. New applicants are told to “hold tight, we
are just a femur fracture away from having a job opening for you!”
What do you find in the most valuable benefit of chamber membership?
Truckee Donner Chamber of Commerce is there for me and I
should take advantage of all the services they offer. It’s a win-win
with referrals, and listings, information found in Truckee Tracks,
seminars and more. The Chamber is a lot like a marketing agent
without all the added cost.
Any tips for other small businesses?
Show up. Pull a shift once in a while. Don’t be an absentee business owner. Hire the best people you can find and make it a fun environment to work in. Customers feel a good vibe as well as a bad vibe.
Keep the toilets working and the kitchen staff from falling through the
floor!
What are your business goals?
To leave this earth with integrity, and knowing that I have
created beautiful buildings that will stand the test of
time through Truckee's varying harsh winters.

TDPUD Announces
Trisha Ruby as the New
Conservation Program
Administrator
The Truckee Donner Public Utility
District is pleased to announce that Trisha
Ruby has come on board as the new conservation program administrator following
Scott Terrell’s recent retirement from the
position. Ruby comes to the PUD with an
extensive background in product development and mechanical engineering and
brings with her a passion for renewable
energy and energy conservation.
Ruby is originally from Reno, but has
lived in the Truckee area for the past 10
years. She holds a bachelors degree from
the University of Nevada, Reno and a
master’s degree in mechanical engineering
from the University of California, Davis.
The bulk of her career has been in product development where she worked on
everything from satellites to orthopedic
implants. She was most recently with Synergy Technology of Reno for the past 13
years. Ruby has always been personally
interested in energy conservation and specifically energy efficient products. Ruby
feels that the position of conservation
program administrator will allow her to
put her fascination with energy conservation to practical use.
The conservation program administrator is responsible for developing new
programs and managing existing commercial conservation programs. In addition to
overseeing program creation and implementation she will find new products that
work within program guidelines.
Squeeze In Opens in Sparks, Nevada
Shila and Chad Morris and Misty, Gary and Kay Young with
fiancé Danny Salerno at the Sparks Squeeze
The family owned Squeeze In, based
in Truckee since 1974, recently opened a
new location in Sparks. The newest location, at the corner of Sparks Blvd., and
Disc Drive, has been modeled after the
“mothership” in Truckee with a long
narrow dining room flanked by a long
narrow kitchen. Squeeze co-owner Shila
Morris said “the Sparks location will
round out our immediate area and allow
us to begin our expansion throughout
the west. We’re currently scouting a location in Carson City and we’ll be heading
over the hill next year as well.”
After two larger locations opened in
Reno in 2008 and 2010, the family identified several operational advantages and
efficiencies to the long and skinny design
of the original Truckee location and returned to that basic floor plan. The
Young and Morris families will use the
new Sparks location as the prototype
model for new openings of the privately
held 38 year old company.
Morris said “in each community
where a Squeeze In is located, we provide a new source of community support
through our generous donations and outreach, as well as, on average, two dozen
jobs for people who match our tribe:
friendly, efficient, happy workers ready
to serve our guests the Best Omelettes
On The Planet.”
Squeeze In Wins at American Marketing
Association Ace Awards
Squeeze In was recently recognized
for their marketing efforts at the
American Marketing Association of
Reno-Tahoe ACE Awards. The Ace
Awards represent the Reno-Tahoe area’s
best marketing campaigns in various
categories over the past year.
The AMA board came up with the
nominations, and judging was done by
their sister AMA chapter in Charleston,
N.C.
Known for “the best omelettes on
the planet,” Squeeze In made it their
business in 2011 to find and connect with
existing and potential guests digitally.
Their goal was to increase the viability
and reach of multiple communication
channels and build on their existing
database of nearly 25,000 guests.
Use Parking Receipts to Receive Credit on Car Wash
Bring your downtown Truckee parking receipt to Cross Roads
Car Wash and receive credit towards a car wash.
“Many locals informed me they don’t like paying for parking,”
said owner Mark Lowenstern of Cross Roads Car Wash. “I decided
to help them out by reimbursing their parking fees. The initial response has been great and local residents really appreciate the program we’re offering.”
Locals can receive up to $2 credit towards an Ultimate, Supreme or Deluxe Wash or one dollar credit for a Basic Wash.

September/October 2012
The program is part of Cross Roads Car Wash’s “We Love
Locals” campaign, celebrating 25 years in business. Cross Roads
Car Wash was a 2010 nominee for Truckee’s “Green Business of
the Year.”
Upcoming promotions can be can be found online at
www.crossroadscarwash.com. Exterior car wash hours are from
9:00 am to 5:30 pm Monday through Saturday and 10:00 am to

Custom Learning Academy Students
Consistently Perform Above Grade Level
Custom Learning Academy (CLA), a
private Kindergarten through 12th grade
school in Truckee, takes a highly personalized approach to education by offering
rigorous national standards-based curriculum tailored to the individual needs
of students.
CLA’s unique learning environment
focuses on individual academic success
and self-esteem. Students’ academic performance combined with extracurricular
offerings and a nurturing learning and
teaching environment have led to an increase in full and part time enrollment
since the school’s inception in 2005.
“We’ve created a place where learning happens. We teach students how to
learn in a supportive environment that
promotes academic performance and
self-esteem and fuels success in college
placement and beyond,” explains Lisa
Crosby, founder and director of CLA.
Custom Learning Academy’s 20112012 Iowa composite scores show academic mastery exceeding grade level
530.587.8808
across all grades. CLA attributes its’ astoundingly high national standardized
test scores to the school’s attention to
mastery of concepts, 10 (or less) to 1
student to teacher ratio, outstanding educators, and an involved executive director who collaborates with teachers and
students on a weekly basis to guide success.
Enrollment during the 2011-2012
school year grew throughout the winter
and spring with the influx of families
seeking a proven learning environment
for their children, and ski and snowboard
student athletes seeking a flexible schedule without sacrificing academics. As of
June 2011, CLA full time enrollment was
68 students.
CLA is accepting new students

which begins September 4 and
concludes June 14, 2013. For more information, call 530-587-5470 or visit

Tahoe Forest Health
System Citizens
Oversight Committee
Annual Community
Report Published
Tahoe Forest Health System recently
announced the availability of the Citizens
Oversight Committee (COC) Community
Report. The report is produced by a group
that was established and appointed by the
Tahoe Forest Hospital Board of Directors
after Measure C was passed on September
25, 2007 with a 72 percent majority vote.
The committee ensures bond proceeds are
expended only for projects authorized by
the ballot measure and that no proceeds
are used for salaries or other unrelated
project costs.
“I am very proud of the work this
committee has done over the years. They
have been diligent in their mission and
have represented the taxpayers of our
community well,” said Dale Chamblin,
chairman, Citizens Oversight Committee,
Tahoe Forest Health System. “It’s important that the community understands how
their taxes have been spent so far. We
hope many people will read this report and
feel confident in our work.”
Included in the Citizens Oversight
Committee Community Report:
• Overview of the committee –
when and why the committee originated,
committee responsibilities and key topics
addressed in meetings
• A look at Measure C Projects
“From the Ground Up” – Each project
phase is noted with years and bulleted information and includes visuals
• A detailed pie chart illustrating
Measure C general obligation bonds sold
and expended to date
• An excerpt from chairman Dale
Chamblin’s 2011 Annual Report
• Short biographies of current COC
Members

Control Your Website With a Content
Management System
Still relying on a webmaster to update
every little bit of text on your website? It
might be time to switch to a content management system.
A content management system, or
CMS, is a website that is easily updatable
by anyone. With a CMS you can:
• Control the content of your website
• Say goodbye to your webmaster’s
hourly maintenance fees
• Increase the number of visitors and
repeat visitors to your website
• Improve your search engine position
With a CMS, you don’t have to know
code; you don’t even have to know how
websites work. Simply log into your website with your username and password, go
to the page you want to update, click
“Edit,” change text or photos, and click
“Save.” No more waiting by the computer
for your webmaster to email you back.
A CMS used to be a big expense for a
small business owner. This is no longer the
case. Nowadays, an investment in a CMS
pays for itself quickly, since you will immediately start saving money on monthly
webmaster fees. With a CMS, you can add
or edit pages, load photos, and edit your
website menus yourself – quickly and easily.
Control your website, increase visitors
By updating your content regularly,
you will increase the chance visitors return
to your website. New pages, new events,
new project galleries – any type of new
content will keep your customers coming
back for more.
More content = better search engine
position
Search engines like content-rich websites. If you add or update your pages regularly, search engines will have more content
to index, thus improving your chances of
climbing the ranks in Google. Also, with a
CMS you can easily control important
components on your website that search
engines seek, like title tags and meta description tags.
Make sure its flexible for the future
When looking at a firm to build your
CMS, be sure they use a platform that allows for future expansion. WordPress,
Drupal, and Joomla are the three most
popular options out there right now.
SmallPond uses the Drupal content
management system, which is flexible and
extensible. We also like Drupal because we
find it to be more developer-friendly than
the other CMS platforms. Drupal allows us
to build the features you want on your
website, without being pigeonholed into
what’s available with a WordPress template. Also, WordPress tends to require
significant regular updates, which means
your website will become outdated quickly.
Once your new CMS is built, be sure
you receive training and documentation, so
you can start taking advantage of your new
website right away.
Renée Deinken is the director of web development at SmallPond Studio. Contact SmallPond
for a tour of our content management system.

300 Miles for Mentoring: Ultra-Distance Cycling to Support At-Risk Youth
September marks the third year in a row that a dedicated
team of bicyclists, with ties to the Truckee-Tahoe region, will attempt to ride non-stop together for 300 miles from Truckee to San
Francisco to raise funding for Big Brothers Big Sisters of Nevada
County and North Lake Tahoe’s mentoring programs for at-risk
youth.
“I feel a deep connection to kids who need guidance and support. I feel that as a community we can affect their lives in a positive way now and create a better society in the long run. It is also
important that my children understand the value of helping others,” said ride organizer Hardy Bullock.
“The impact that Hardy Bullock and the riders have had on
our ability to provide quality mentoring for at-risk children is significant. In just three years, they have raised nearly $40,000 – all of
which goes to helping us connect kids facing adversity to caring
and responsible mentors and friends,” said Dena Valin, executive
director for BBBSNC.
To sponsor the riders and help bring Big Brothers Big Sisters’
mentoring programs to more local youth, please visit

Donner Party Hike – Celebrating 20 Years
The Truckee Donner Chamber of Commerce will host the
popular 20th Annual Donner Party Hike event October 13 & 14
that unites two passions – love for the Sierra Nevada wilderness
and fascinating emigrant history.
A unique event, participants can choose from seven different
hikes on Saturday on Donner Summit offering emigrant history
from area guides, along with invigorating recreation and beautiful
scenery. Hikes begin and end at the Mt. Judah Lodge at Sugar
Bowl. Guides lead small groups to interpretive spots giving detailed
historical information focused on emigrant and area history.
Sunday’s walking tour transports participants back in time to
the tragic tale of the ill-fated Donner Party. Participants hear the
detailed story while strolling on the interpretive loop out on Hwy.
89 where the Donner Party’s encampment was.
Saturday hike options include a 3.5 mile trek in Summit Canyon, recently acquired by Truckee Donner Land Trust, previously
private property. That hike explores the Dutch Flat Donner Lake
Wagon Road that has significant historical value in emigration, the
transcontinental railroad, and development of America’s highway
system. Other hikes include a 4 mile trek with views of petroglyphs, old roadside “billboards” and the China Wall; a 4-5 mile
hike heading up Roller Pass; a 6 mile hike past pristine High Sierra
Lakes; a strenuous 6 mile hike over Coldstream Pass, one of the
most heavily traveled emigrant routes; or a 5 mile hike through old
railroad tunnels and snowsheds.
After the hike, participants will enjoy lunch and a Chautauqua
performance of Captain John Sutter by David Fenimore. Sutter
financed the Donner Party relief efforts and is a significant character in emigrant, California and Gold Rush history. Chautauqua is
an art, a performance, where someone portrays a character through
530.587.8808
the character’s own words and brings the character alive, plus adds
commentary of today’s issues.
Sponsors of this event include: Cedar House Sport Hotel,
Donner Lake Village, Donner Memorial State Park, Donner Summit Historical Society, Hampton Inn and Suites Tahoe-Truckee,
Inn at Truckee, Larkspur Hotel Truckee-Tahoe, Northstar California, Sugar Bowl Ski Resort, Town of Truckee, Truckee Donner
Historical Society, Truckee Donner Lodge and the U.S. Forest
Service.

Saturday, and from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on Sunday. Advance admission is $30 (discounted to $10 for ages 5 to 12). Day of tickets (if
available) are $40. Visit www.trailsandvistas.org for tickets.
For the first time ever, a Truckee Tahoe Peace Prize will be
awarded to a community member on International Peace Day. As a
part of their mission to bring awareness to peace, the Truckee Tahoe
Peace Project (TTPP) created this award to publicly recognize, commend and thank the individual who best represents the spirit of peace
in our community through their thoughts and actions.
The TTPP hopes that awarding this title to a community member
will illustrate how each and every one of us has the power to make a
change and bring peace into their own life and the lives of others.
The TTPP encourages everyone to nominate the person they feel
is most deserving. To submit your nomination, go to the TTPP website www.truckeetahoepeaceproject.org or stop by For Goodness Sake
to pick up a nomination form. The winner will be presented with the
award at the Truckee Tahoe Peace Day Celebration in the Truckee
River Regional Park, September 21, and will be notified ahead of time.

All-American City, continued from page 1
and First 5 Nevada County. The community was one of 14
awardees selected from 32 finalists.
“We are honored that Tahoe Truckee has been selected as a
recipient of this prestigious award,” said Truckee Mayor Joan
Jones. “Truckee has a history of supporting education and we are
excited about the prospects of how the Tahoe Truckee Reads program can strengthen not only our education system but also our
community.”
Third-grade reading is critical as it marks the point when children shift from “learning to read” to “reading to learn”. Students
who haven't mastered reading by then are more likely to get stuck
in a cycle of academic failure, drop out of school, and struggle
throughout their lives.
The Tahoe Truckee Reads Campaign’s comprehensive strategy
to boost third-grade reading is focused on reading proficiency,
school readiness and attendance, summer reading, public awareness and increased coordination and system change to better assess
and track data in each of the target areas. The region aims to have
16
September/October 2012
at least 75 percent of students who read below grade level participate in summer reading programs, and to ultimately increase the
percentage of grade-level readers from 53 percent to 80 percent.
As a charter member of the Grade-Level Reading Community
Network, the Tahoe Truckee region will have access to a Promising Practices Clearinghouse, an online help desk, peer-learning opportunities, meetings with national experts and policymakers and a
foundation registry designed to expand and replicate successful
programs.
“I am truly impressed with this important community effort to
address grade level reading,” said Dr. Robert Leri, Tahoe Truckee
Unified School District Superintendent. “As a relative newcomer
to our school district, I am amazed, excited and energized with the
collaborative and inclusive work to develop such an outstanding
effort that will truly make a difference in our student’s futures. I
am proud that we have been recognized as an award recipient and
that our plan can help serve as a model for other communities as
well.”
