6 Successful People Think Differently
Scientific studies prove that successful people think
differently. They make decisions differently, set
goals differently, and bounce back from failure and
adversity differently. In this presentation, Valorie
combines truth and solid research to help you:
•Sleep better at night feeling peace about
your decisions.
•Change your mindset from “I’ll do that someday”
to concrete goals with realistic action steps.
•Renew vision for your life that makes your
heart sing!
The Importance of Reading Aloud
Working-class children spend as much as 1,700 hours
with books before beginning kindergarten. At-risk
children spend as few as 25 hours. Even with tons of
research supporting reading aloud as a vital strategy,
some school districts have a “No Reading Aloud” policy
for their teachers. Let’s discuss the why, how
and what of reading aloud to children.

7 We're Learning the "Albaphet" They're just like the
ABCs!::Letter Name Learning in Early Childhood Literacy
Learning the names of alphabet letters has been shown to account
for more unique variance in students’ acquisition of reading and
writing than learning letter sounds. This seems counterintuitive for
most teachers since it appears children need to know letter sounds
rather than names to read and write. This session will present
the latest research, practices, and assessments to support young
children in their learning of alphabet letters.

From Chaos to Calm::Discipline for Your Most
Challenging Children
Most classrooms today contain children with extreme
behavior issues and diagnosed or undiagnosed special needs.
Behaviorally-challenging children are also relationship-resistant
children. Instead of spending precious time seeking to get
challenging children under control, we can instead create a
compassionate school culture that employs the natural power
of connection between all members as a means of co-regulating
behavior and teaching children to self-regulate. Participants
will learn to “meet children where they are,” including specific
strategies to reach out to challenging children in a way that
builds trust and connection. Participants will also explore how
being in relationships with others directly increases their ability
to self-regulate, and how self-regulation will help even the most
challenging children transform their behavior from
chaotic to calm.

12 Teaching our youngest children skills of
assertiveness and effective communication: The ultimate
in bully prevention
Bullying can cause an enormous amount of stress, fear, and
anxiety in young kids. This behavior not only affects the victims,
but research shows that childhood bullies are more likely to have
negative peer relationships and significant issues later in life.
Consequently, children must learn that they teach others how to
treat them. Teachers should support children in learning how to
assertively deal with the intrusive behaviors of others. Conflicts
that arise in classrooms offer a rich opportunity to teach children
life skills. This session will transform adult perception of conflict
from seeing misbehavior to seeing a call for help. Conferees will
be empowered to reframe their negative perceptions about
peer-to-peer struggles and classroom disruptions and use daily
classroom conflict as an opportunity to teach students life skills.
Accordingly, teachers will be equipped to focus on assertive
solutions by teaching both victims to use a self-assured voice and
aggressors to use effective verbal communication strategies in
times of conflict. Conferees will leave this session with new skills
and resources about how to turn classroom conflicts into shared
cooperation by using conflicts as an opportunity to teach missing
social emotional skills.

Building Math Foundations
Teaching children math skills in a developmental sequence
(layering new skills on top of developed skills) builds a conceptual

include activities, songs and games to make learning
math fun!

15 Get Into the Game: Developing Children's Mathematical
Competencies through Meaningful Engagement
Skills practice does not have to be a tedious, painstaking
experience, which is how some of us experienced mathematics
by completing one worksheet after another. Games, on the other
hand, provide young children an opportunity to practice these
mathematical skills—in particular those related to counting,
adding, subtracting, and comparing—in an engaging, dynamic
context that encourages problem solving and strategic reasoning.
Come prepared to preview an assortment of child-friendly games
that promote peer collaboration rather than emphasizing winning
or competition.

16 Engaging Young Children in Mathematical
Inquiry through Play
Play provides a natural and engaging context for children to
accomplish important cognitive and linguistic milestones at their
own developmental pace. As children play, they are meeting
academic standards that address counting and numerical fluency
while also developing 21st century desired skills, such as problem
solving, communication, collaboration, imagination, and creativity.
This workshop reviews empirical research and theory about
how children learn through play. Participants will make practical
connections to theory by learning ways to scaffold and guide
children in productive self-selected exploratory and pretend play
scenarios through the lens of mathematics.

Brain breaks allow children the opportunity to mentally rest their
brain by diverting their mind into movements that allow them to:
refresh • recharge • refocus • regenerate • release strength • breathe.
Exercise and learning go hand in hand. Regular brain breaks
enhance attentiveness, concentration and focus. They accelerate
learning by allowing children to release their energy, anxiety and
stress. Brain breaks also increase circulation and promote physical
fitness and coordination. Action, dance and movement songs
make it easy for you to integrate brain breaks into your classroom.
They are also great for physical education, circle-time, group
activities and indoor recess.
