OUR FINEST HOUR
A toast to State, to all the days,
All the laughter, all the tears.
You have made our friendships great,
We’ll triumph through the years.
With hope anew we’ll face the storm
Beyond which stands your lofty tower –
That will be our finest hour.
In years to come we’ll look to thee,
Yearning for your guiding light.
You’ll not fail us, Alma Mater,
Keep us through the night.
When darkness comes and all hope dies,
You will give us strength and power –
That will be our finest hour.

The interim president of Buffalo State College and the entire
college community honor the Class of 2010 by continuing
the tradition of the Commencement Garden. Inaugurated
in 2000, the permanent garden is located outside the main

Please enjoy the garden and use it as a backdrop for
taking pictures of your graduates.

Welcome to Buffalo State College’s 2010 Commencement
Exercises! This is a day of celebration on our campus—celebration of our
graduates, who have worked so hard to reach this happy occasion; of the family
and friends who have supported their efforts; of the intellectual enterprise that is
the core of our mission as an institution; and of the faculty and staff who make
that enterprise possible.
To our graduates, I offer my most heartfelt congratulations. I know how hard
you have worked, and I know the deep-seated drive and determination that have
brought you to this day. That sense of purpose and ambition is tremendously
admirable. It will serve you well in whatever course you choose to pursue after
receiving your diploma today.
To our graduates’ family and friends, I offer sincere thanks for your part in
ensuring their success. Many among you have made sacrifices—large and small—
to support your sons, daughters, husbands, wives, partners, and other loved ones
in their quest for a degree. That is noble work. At Buffalo State, it does not go
unnoticed. Thank you.
And to our faculty and staff, I also offer my thanks, as well as congratulations for
another successful year in the life of our marvelous institution. You are Buffalo
State’s lifeblood. We could not thrive without all you do, each and every day.
In a few short weeks, Buffalo State College will welcome its eighth president,
Dr. Aaron Podolefsky. With the arrival of a new president, a new chapter in the life
of our college will begin. What will remain constant, however, is the strength this
institution derives from its extraordinary people: students, faculty, staff, alumni,
parents, and friends.
It is in that spirit that I encourage today’s graduates to stay connected to your alma
mater. You will forever be a part of this place. Your successes will be our successes,
and ours will be yours. Whenever you can, take a moment to return to the campus
that nurtured you—even if that just means clicking through our Web site—and
remember that you will always be welcome here.
Congratulations to the Buffalo State College Class of 2010.
Sincerely,
Dennis K. Ponton, Ph.D.
Interim President

She received the Anna P. Burrell Scholarship and
the George Dougherty Scholarship for Health
Professionals. She is also a member of the Chi
Alpha Epsilon National Honor Society, and
she was accepted into the Ronald E. McNair
Scholars Program, which prepares students for
doctoral programs. For her McNair Scholars
research project, Ms. Brown investigated
drawing as an augmentative communicative tool
that may help people with aphasia regain verbal
communication abilities. She was the first
Buffalo State student selected to participate in
the competitive, prestigious Rusk Institute of
Rehabilitation Medicine internship at New York
University Langone Medical Center, where she
observed nationally recognized speech-language
pathologists working with clients who presented
with many different disorders. Ms. Brown is also
a member of several professional organizations.
In both her academic and service endeavors,
Ms. Brown has been recognized as a person
with outstanding qualities that bode well for a
successful career and a leadership role in her
community. She will pursue her master’s degree
in speech-language pathology at Loyola
University Maryland.
certificate in advanced diamond setting from
Drouhard National Jewelers’ School in Mansfield,
Ohio. Her passion for the field led her to seek
an excellent baccalaureate program in jewelry
design in the United States.
Ms. Lee’s work demonstrates an ability to
grasp the complex ideation as well as the technical
capabilities necessary to develop and execute
three-dimensional objects. In 2009 and 2010,
she received the seventh and eighth annual
Hyatt Design Award for Excellence in Metal/
Jewelry Design, an award given to a student
designated by the program’s faculty members.
Ms. Lee’s work has been included in several
student design exhibitions in the Czurles-Nelson
Gallery, including juried exhibitions. Her work
was also selected for inclusion in the Dean of
the School of Arts and Humanities Gallery.
In 2008, she was accepted to the Haystack
Mountain School of Crafts, an international
craft school in Maine, to study torch-fired
enameling. She was also selected to assist
renowned artist, sculptor, and metalsmith
Thomas Mann at the prestigious Smithsonian
Craft Show in Washington, D.C., in 2008.
She traveled to Chicago for the Sculptural
Objects and Functional Art (SOFA) exhibition,
and she has attended several national conferences sponsored by the Society of North
American Goldsmiths, a professional association
for jewelry design and metalsmithing, to which
she belongs.
In addition to her academic work, Ms. Lee
participated in student activities, including the
International Student Organization. She is a
member of Students Involved in the Art of
Metalsmithing. She was also active in the
Buffalo community as a volunteer working with
single mothers through her faith community.
Sooja Lee

John J. McGowan
John McGowan earned a
bachelor of science in childhood education (grades 1–6)
with a concentration in social
studies. His cumulative GPA
of 3.96 and his other academic
achievements are complemented
by his extensive volunteer
activities and his full participation in campus life.
Mr. McGowan served as vice president and
president of the college’s Emerging Educator’s
Chapter of the Association for Childhood
Education International (ACEI), and was
instrumental in developing its agenda and
activities. Mr. McGowan co-presented “Play:
The New Four-Letter Word,” a research project
that explored the role of play in successful
learning, at the 11th annual Student Research
and Creativity Celebration. He also gave a
presentation at the leadership seminar at ACEI’s
annual international conference in 2010.
In addition, he is a member of the college’s
Student Council for Exceptional Children;
Kappa Delta Pi, the international education
honor society; and Phi Alpha Theta, a national
history honor society. He was twice nominated
to Who’s Who Among Students in American
Universities and Colleges. He also served in the
highly selective position of student representative
to the Professional Development Schools
Consortium, a partnership between the School
of Education and 42 participating schools.
Mr. McGowan earned high praise from
teachers and administrators in the Buffalo Public
Schools for his volunteer work with students,
which exceeded 1,000 hours. Other volunteer
activities included the Buffalo State College
Clean-Up Day, the Polar Plunge for Special
Olympics, the St. Vincent de Paul toy and art
supply drive, and the Love Canal 30th anniversary
demonstration. His commitment to making
the world a better place was recognized with
the Democracy and Peace Service Learning
Certificate of Recognition.
His drive, enthusiasm, and energy have
enabled him to excel in the classroom as a
student and as a teacher. When teaching, he is
very creative in developing ways to help students
understand and remember key concepts.
Ms. Rondon came to Buffalo State College
determined to attend a top-tier law school.
While that remains her goal, her experience at
Buffalo State has inspired her to pursue a career
in international relations, where she intends to
work to bridge international differences while
encouraging others to take a more active role in
government and politics.
During her freshman year, Ms. Rondon
was recruited to the All College Honors
Program. She was also accepted into the Ronald
E. McNair Scholars Program, and her research
as a McNair scholar focused on the EU Charter
of Fundamental Rights. She has presented
research in many venues, including the New
York State Political Science Association conference, the Student Research and Creativity
Celebration, and the SUNY Model European
Union conference simulation.
Ms. Rondon is a member of three national
honor societies: Alpha Lambda Delta, Pi Sigma
Alpha, and Chi Alpha Epsilon. She has completed
three internships, including one with
Congressman Chris Lee’s political campaign and
another in the Office of the Attorney General in
Washington, D.C. She also took an active role
in various student organizations, including the
United Students Government’s Judicial Council
and the College Senate, both of which are governing bodies on campus. She studied abroad in
Europe, Turkey, and China. In addition she was
named European council president for the 2010
SUNY Model European Union simulation by
the program’s director because of her substantive
background in the policies and institutions of
the European Union.
On campus, Ms. Rondon is a resident
assistant, a tutor in political science and
economics for students in the Educational
Opportunity Program, and a mentor for the
NIA program. She is president of the Kappa Pi
Chapter of Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority Inc.
This fall, she will enter law school in pursuit of a
juris doctor and master of arts joint degree in
international affairs to fulfill her dream of providing greater service and progress to society.
Yolanda C. Rondon
Yolanda Rondon earned a
bachelor of arts in political science and completed two minors
in international economics
and international relations.
She attained a cumulative GPA
of 3.78 while participating in
numerous campus leadership
roles, academic enrichment
activities, and volunteer and
community service activities.

ACADEMIC TRADITION
Academic Procession
The Gold Tassel
The processional begins with the entrance of the seating marshals. After all the degree candidates have been directed to their
seats, the faculty members march to their places preceded by the
head marshal. The mace bearer leads the platform party, which
includes dignitaries, honorees, and the college administration.
Graduates wearing gold tassels on their mortarboards have
completed Buffalo State’s All College Honors Program. Students
must maintain a minimum 3.50 cumulative grade point average
overall and take a number of honors courses to remain in the
program. Qualified students enter the program as freshmen from
high school, sophomores already attending Buffalo State, and
juniors transferring from community colleges.
All College Honors Program students receive an academic
scholarship of $2,500 per year. Scholarship funds are provided
by private donations and administered by the Buffalo State
College Foundation.
The Mace and Medallion
By tradition, seals of office and tools of authority have been
incorporated in the ceremonies that invest individuals with the
responsibilities and power of official leadership. Today purely
symbolic, these objects once effected control themselves, the mace
having been originally an iron club capable of breaking armor.
About the middle of the thirteenth century, the mace was
adopted for civic purposes. Much earlier, seals, from which the
college medallion was derived, constituted the official signatures of
heads of church and state. Today, the academic seal, representing
the office of college president, and the mace, standing for order
and authority, have become part of the pageantry of symbolism
involved in formal academic ceremonies.
For Buffalo State, both mace and medallion are enhanced by
their being the design and work of faculty members. The gold
medallion was designed by the late Earl W. Wolfgruber, a member
of the Design Department faculty for 20 years. A gift of the Class
of 1968, it was first used that year for the inauguration of
President E. K. Fretwell Jr. and has been worn on official college
occasions since. A neck piece was added in 1987, designed and
crafted by Stephen F. Saracino, professor of design.
The 1968 inauguration was also the first occasion for the use
of the rosewood and silver mace, designed and built by Douglas
E. Sigler, at that time an assistant professor of design. The
flaring silver flanges that circle the crown of the mace carry the
engraved names of each president of the college. Incorporated in
the total design are abstract concepts of flame, dove, and hands,
used by the college to signify learning and aspiration. All formal
academic processions are led by a mace bearer with this staff of
authority in hand.
The Gold Honors Cord
Graduates wearing gold cords at Commencement have achieved
the distinction of graduating with academic honors. An honors
citation is given to students who have maintained a minimum
3.50 grade point average for all work completed at Buffalo State.
Graduates who have completed a minimum of 54 credit hours at
Buffalo State with an average of 3.80 to 4.00 are designated
summa cum laude, 3.65 to 3.79 magna cum laude, and 3.50 to
3.64 cum laude.

Academic Attire
Academic attire—cap, gown, and hood—is higher education’s
link with its long and illustrious past. Like judicial dress, it
originated in the twelfth century with the medieval clergy, whose
ecclesiastical dress probably derived, in turn, from civilian attire at
an earlier age. Medieval scholars were almost all clergymen, and
the earliest illustrations available show gowns that somewhat
resemble cassocks. Universities of the period were primarily
education guilds, the term “bachelor” denoting an apprentice,
“master” a full member of the guild, and “doctor” one who had
attained the highest degree of learning in a particular field.
In the United States, academic attire began to be used extensively
at the end of the nineteenth century. It has given America a
beautiful and impressive method of signifying academic honors.
The bachelor’s gown is black and worn closed, distinguished
by its long, pointed sleeves; the master’s is designed to be worn
open and has long sleeves with square base and arc cut; the
doctor’s, worn open or closed, has velvet panels down the front
and three bars on the round, full sleeve. The color of the velvet
may signify the field of study.
The hood is the most distinguishing feature of academic attire.
Its colors indicate the degree of the wearer and the institution
attended. The bachelor’s and the master’s hoods are similar in
design, but the bachelor’s is 3 feet long while the master’s is 31⁄2
feet long. The colors of the silk lining exposed in the center of
the hood are those of the institution conferring the degree, for
example, blue and gold for the State University of New York.
The edging of the hood indicates the academic discipline.
Since the hood no longer serves as a head covering, the
mortarboard, which originated in English universities, is worn.
A long tassel of black or of a color appropriate to the degree is
fastened in the middle of the top of the cap. The doctor’s cap
may have a gold tassel. Recently, soft velvet tams have become
popular for holders of advanced degrees.
Academic attire serves two purposes: It gives a sense of dignity
and tradition to the ceremony, and it links those who wear it—
students, faculty, and professionals—to all the men and women
who have sought learning over the past centuries.
ACADEMIC TRADITION
African Kente Cloth
ACCREDITATIONS
The red, black, and green hood, relatively new on college
campuses, is traditionally worn during important ceremonies
by the leadership and elders of countries that include the Ivory
Coast, Cameroon, Ghana, and Nigeria. In this country, the
Kente cloth is worn as a stole on important occasions.
