Coaching Honors
Ian Hennessy
Eighth-year head coach
Ian Hennessy of the
UD men’s soccer team
was named the South
Atlantic Region Head
Coach of the Year by the
National Soccer Coaches
Association of America
(NSCAA).
The NSCAA, which is
the world’s largest soccer
coaches’ organization, is
a non-profit organization
with a mission to educate
coaches, encourage
excellence and serve the
soccer community.
“Considering the
company I am in here,
to be considered a national
finalist for the most
prestigious of coaching
awards is quite the
compliment and certainly
tickles the ego,” said
Hennessy. “However,
like all awards it is merely
symbolic and to be viewed
as a culmination of an
intense and positive workload by our players and
staff, the administration
and the good folks in the
local community.”
Monté ROSS
UD men’s basketball head
coach Monté Ross was
named the 2014 Colonial
Athletic Association Coach
of the Year after guiding
Delaware to a 25-10 record
as the Blue Hens tied for
the second most wins in
a season in school history.
Ross has now won 115
games during his Blue Hens
career, the second most in
Delaware history behind
only Steve Steinwedel with
163 victories.
Ross was also named the
fourth annual Clarence
‘Big House’ Gaines
Division I College
Basketball Coach of the
Year as the top minority
coach in the nation by the
National Sportscasters and
Sportswriters Association.
“It is truly an honor to be
recognized for this award,”
Ross said. “The award holds
more significance for me
because ‘Big House’ was
such an influential member
of my life and provided
guidance to me as both a
player and a coach.”
Wendy McFarlane
Capping one of the finest
seasons in UD women’s
outdoor track & field
history, Blue Hens head
coach Wendy McFarlane was
named the 2014 Colonial
Athletic Association
Coach of the Year.
“I am humbled and grateful
to receive such an honor,”
said McFarlane. “On behalf
of my staff and athletes,
I would like to thank the
coaches who voted and
the CAA committee for
acknowledging our success
this season. A championship
title is hard to attain and
would not be possible
without the support of a hard
working and dedicated staff
and to our student-athletes
who have worked tirelessly
for our successes this season.”
McFarlane, who closed out
her sixth season at the helm
of the Blue Hens this spring,
guided Delaware to its first
CAA championship as UD
captured six individual event
titles and compiled 158
points to win the league
championship by 20 points.
Also during the season, the
Hens captured team titles at
the Delaware Invitational,
Delaware Classic, and James
Madison Invitational.
Rolf van de Kerkhof
Rolf van de Kerkhof, third
year head coach of the UD
women’s field hockey team,
was named the Colonial
Athletic Association CoCoach of the Year after
doubling his win total by
leading his squad to one of
the most successful seasons
in Delaware history in 2013
as the Blue Hens posted a
program-record 17 victories.
The NFHCA, along with
4U Field Hockey, gave
more recognition to the
UD field hockey program
UD BLUE HENS
in November as Van de
Kerkhof was named the
Mid-Atlantic Region
Coach of the Year. The
honors are the first ever for a
Delaware field hockey head
coach.
“I have to share my
most sincere thanks for
this coaching award,”
commented Van de Kerkhof.
“This is a great coaching
staff honor and I could not
do it without them. I have
a phenomenal staff and we
earned this together.”

arl Baptiste was nearly unstoppable inside, scoring
a career-high 24 points, including the winning
bucket with 13 seconds left, to lift the No. 1 seed Blue
Hens (25-9) to their fifth straight victory and first ever
CAA Tournament crown since joining the league in
2001-02.
“I can’t say enough about this group, and the way they
just stick with it,” said Delaware head coach Monté
Ross, the CAA Coach of the Year who had led the
Blue Hens to their first CAA Tournament title game
appearance since he took over the helm in 2006-07.
“To be down six late and just keep playing, I couldn’t
be prouder of their resiliency. I love these guys, they are
tremendous. To cap it off like this is really special.”
The Blue Hens needed a huge stop in the final
seconds to complete the late comeback, and they got
it. William & Mary guard Marcus Thornton, who
finished with 22 points, had the chance to win it in
the waning seconds but his 20-foot jumper was off the
mark and the horn sounded with the ball in the air.

BLUE HENS
ARE GOIN’
DANCING!
Delaware earned a return trip to the NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament for the first time since
1999 after the Blue Hens rallied past William & Mary for a heart-stopping 75-74 victory in the
Colonial Athletic Association Tournament title game March 10 at the Baltimore Arena.

The victory set off a wild celebration as a large throng
of UD students and fans stormed the court to join
their fellow Blue Hens.
“I wanted to get the ball to Devon (Saddler), but he
said “get it to Carl,” said Ross of the play that resulted
in the winning basket. “There were a lot of bodies
inside, but he was able to power it in there.”

Delaware, which was making its first tournament
championship game appearance since falling to Hofstra
in the 2001 America East title match, captured its fifth
conference title in school history and headed back to the
NCAA Tournament for the fifth time, joining the 1992,
1993, 1998, and 1999 squads that also advanced.

The Hens’ 25 wins are now tied for the second most in
school history and the highest total since the 1998-99
NCAA Tournament team won that many.

Field Hockey wins
Conference Championship
The field hockey team won the CAA championship last season, moving
on to the NCAA Tournament and hosting the tournament play-in game
at Rullo Stadium.
Delaware topped Liberty University
1-0 in that opening round of the
NCAA Division I championship
tournament. With the win, the Hens
reached a 17-4 record on the season,
setting a new single-season win record.
Liberty, champions of the NorPac
Field Hockey Conference, finished
their season 17-5.
T
he UD women’s outdoor track & field squad
capped off a historic day Saturday May 3rd as
the Blue Hens won five individual events, including
two by Meet Outstanding Track Performer
Lindsay Prettyman, to capture their first ever
Colonial Athletic Association team championship.
The Blue Hens had six first place finishes overall
and three other runner-up showings over the twoday competition to earn 158 points and outdistance
the field and win their first team title since joining
the CAA in 2002.
The outdoor title was the fourth overall in Delaware
women’s history and its first since capturing the East
Coast Conference title in 1991.
“I am super excited for our team,” said Delaware
head coach Wendy McFarlane. “This first CAA
championship is well-deserved but I must say it
came as no surprise to me. Our team and our staff
have put a lot of work in this season, survived the
pain and the fatigue, and were all in. It is all very
gratifying. Our athletes did what they did with
the support of a great coaching staff. I’m honored
to be surrounded with such a great group of hardworking people.”

STUDENT-ATHLETES
Prettyman, who holds UD outdoor records in five
different events, pulled off an impressive double
by winning both the 800 and 1,500 meter runs,
Paige Morris captured the triple jump with a
school-record leap, Alana Pantale was the champion
in the discus, and Latoya James won her second
consecutive 100 meter hurdles title to lead the way.
“It is all very gratifying. I’m honored
to be surrounded with such a great
group of hard-working people.”
— Wendy McFarlane
Amira Idris, who won the CAA Meet Outstanding
Field Performer award in 2013, was the sixth UD
champion as she won the long jump on Friday. The
six individual titles was the most ever for the Hens
in CAA competition and the most at any conference
championship since winning 16 events at the 1991
ECC meet.
Morris (at right) won the triple jump with a leap of
41-2.5 to break the UD record of 41-1 set by Idris
last season; Idris won the long jump with a leap of
19-9.5; Pantale won the discus with a toss of 147-9;
and James recorded a time of 13.89 to win her
second consecutive 100 meter hurdles crown.
Overall, the Hens recorded 36 top 10 finishes
during the meet with nine different athletes
finishing in the top 10 in two or more events.
UD’s trip to the NCAA Tournament
was its first since 2009. In winning the
CAA championship, Delaware tied
the single-season win record with 16
victories, a mark that had not been reached since the 1988 season.
“I’d like to congratulate Delaware Field Hockey on a great season, and it
is the first of many to come,” head coach Rolf van de Kerkhof said. “With
that, we have to continue to build our foundation for a brighter future for
our program. I am excited for the returning players to continue to build
from our learning and a joyful 2013 season.”
INDIVIDUAL ACCOMPLISHMENTS
AllAmericans
T
eam championships are a product of outstanding individual accomplishments by Blue Hens student-athletes. The University
of Delaware has produced numerous All-Americans throughout its rich athletics history, and we are proud to honor those
who are among the nation’s best in their respective sports. Among the talented Blue Hens who earned major All-American
honors during the 2013-14 athletics season:

honors when he was selected
to the National Soccer Coaches
Association of America (NSCAA)
All-American second team in
November. The forward from
Tres Cantos, Spain was the only
freshman named to the first
or second teams. Delgado led
Delaware to an NCAA Tournament
berth as he ranked among the
national leaders with 15 goals.
Delaware defensive tackle Zach
Kerr enjoyed an outstanding
senior season for the Blue Hens
football squad as he was named
to five All-American teams, most
notably a second team spot on
The Sports Network All-American
team. A two-time first team
All-Colonial Athletic Association
standout and a 2013 team captain,
Kerr recorded 57 tackles (28 solo),
including 5.5 tackles for loss and
3.5 sacks.
Sophomore Michaela Patzner
became the first UD field hockey
player to be named a National
Field Hockey Coaches Association
All-American since the 2004
season. Patzner earned third team
honors after being named to the
2013 Longstreth/NFHCA Division
I All-Mid-Atlantic Region first
team in November for the No. 14
Blue Hens. Patzner led Delaware
to the CAA Tournament title and
a first round win in the NCAA
Tournament this past fall when
she led the CAA with 16 goals and
41 points.
UD freshman Esmée Peet added
another award to her belt in
December when she was named
UD’s first-ever Synapse Sports
Division I Field Hockey Rookie
of the Year while also earning
second team All-American honors.
The Colonial Athletic Association
Rookie and Player of the Year,
Esmée led Delaware to the CAA
Tournament title and a first round
NCAA Tournament win this past
fall when she scored 13 goals and
posted a school freshman-record
32 total points.
Standout guard Devon Saddler
became the first UD player selected
to the Lou Henson Mid-Major
All-American team when he earned
the award in March following an
outstanding senior season that saw
him lead the Blue Hens to the CAA
Tournament Title and a berth in
the NCAA Tournament. A four-time
All-Colonial Athletic Association
selection, Saddler was runner-up
for the CAA Player of the Year award
after a senior season that saw him
average 19.7 points per game
and become UD’s all-time leading
scorer with 2,222 points.
Cory Camp became the first UD men’s swimmer
to earn CAA Rookie Swimmer of the Year honors
Cory Camp, a freshman from
Olney, MD (Blake High School),
earned the top award for the
Blue Hens as he was named
the CAA Male Rookie Swimmer
of the Year while also earning
All-CAA honors in the 1,650
freestyle. He became the first
Delaware men’s swimmer to
earn league Rookie of the Year
honors since the Blue Hens
joined the CAA in 2001-02.
He enjoyed an outstanding
showing at the CAA
Championships as he placed
second in the 1,650 freestyle,
fourth in the 500 freestyle, and
fourth in the 400 individual
medley. He set school
records in both the 1,650
freestyle (15:29.29) and 500
freestyle (4:28.15) and was an
NCAA provisional qualifier in
the 1,650 freestyle.
U
niversity of Delaware junior Latoya James
became the first student-athlete in Blue Hens
history to capture an individual title at the Eastern
College Athletic Conference Indoor Track & Field
Championships on March 9 as she won the 60 meter
hurdles competition at the Boston University Track
and Tennis Center.
James was one of six Blue Hens who competed during
the final day of the meet and one of two to earn AllEast honors as senior Lindsay Prettyman placed second
overall in the mile with a school-record time. Also for
the Blue Hens, the UD distance medley relay team
posted a 10th place overall finish.
“Everyone had a peak performance this weekend,”
said head coach Wendy McFarlane. “The ladies stuck
with the plan and executed their races very well.
This weekend gives us big momentum heading into
the outdoor season. The girls did a great job competing
and working with each other.”
James, a junior from Kingston, Jamaica (Convent
of Mercy Academy), had finished second in the
preliminaries but she went one better in the finals as
she ran to a time of 8.56 to win the race, outdistancing
runner-up Michelle Anthony of Albany (8.59) and
Chatal Scott of Connecticut (8.66). James earned AllEast honors for the second straight year after placing
second in the event during the 2013 season.

STUDENT-ATHLETES
Junior captain Allegra Gray of the UD women’s soccer team earned
the most prestigious academic honor of her career as she was named the 2013
Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) women’s soccer Scholar-Athlete of the Year.
“It is a great honor and well deserved that Allegra was named CAA ScholarAthlete of the Year,” said Delaware head coach Scott Grzenda. “Allegra is an
extremely focused individual and a competitor who thrives on and off the field.”
Gray became the first-ever Blue Hens
women’s soccer player to earn the CAA’s
highest academic honor and is just the
second student-athlete in women’s soccer
history to earn a conference scholar-athlete
of the year award. The last player to do
so was Beth Hatt in 1996 when Delaware
was a member of the North Atlantic
Conference.
The midfielder is an honor student

and was a member of the CAA All-Academic women’s soccer team in 2013. She
serves as a representative for the Delaware Student-Athlete Advisory Committee
(SAAC) organization and works as a peer mentor. The junior is also on UD’s
Appellate Board of Student Conduct and is a member of the Alpha Lambda
Delta Honor Society.
“Allegra’s award is a testament to our team and the University that we can attract
such talented students and athletes,” said Grzenda.

Heather Hartman Chosen as
2014 CAA John Randolph
Inspiration Award Recipient
CAA Commissioner Tom Yeager presented the Randolph
Award to Heather Hartman during UD’s Athletics Awards
Banquet. Heather’s parents, George and Lori, were also in
attendance during the presentation in May.
The award recognizes individuals who through the
strength of character and human spirit serve as an
inspiration to all to maximize their potential and ability
for success. It is named after former William & Mary
athletics director John Randolph, who lost a courageous
battle with cancer in 1995.
Hartman, who started as a defender throughout most of
her time in a Blue Hens uniform, was diagnosed with
Hodgkin’s Lymphoma in the spring of 2012 after noticing
a lump by her collarbone.
“It is incredible to receive such an honorable award,”
exclaimed Hartman. “Four years ago, my life changed
when I decided to come to Delaware and it sure has been
an interesting ride. I feel so blessed to be healthy and alive.
I know that my hardship was given to me for a reason
and if I can inspire just one person to keep persevering
through, it is humbling. I am so honored to be given
this award and appreciate all that the CAA has done.”

really important in life. It has been a privilege to not only
coach Heather, but to know her. She has changed my life,
impacted a program, and will continue to enrich the lives
of others. Coaching is not limited to the ‘X’s and O’s,’ it
is about the lives we touch and the relationships we create.
We choose to coach to teach life lessons through the
game, show our players compassion, deepen their passion,
and help them grow as individuals. Heather Hartman
revitalized this perspective.”
Hartman concluded her career ranked ninth on Delaware’s
all-time assists list with 19. She graduated from the
University of Delaware on May 31 and plans to attend
graduate school at the University of Virginia. Hartman
also learned from her doctors prior to the awards banquet
that she continues to be cancer free.

Pierce, Prettyman, Saddler
Take Top Honors at
Athletics Awards Banquet
R
ecord-breaking distance runner Lindsay
Prettyman, high-scoring men’s basketball guard
Devon Saddler, and two-time football All-American
Andrew Pierce were the big winners as the University
of Delaware celebrated the 2013-14 athletics
campaign with its annual Athletics Awards Banquet
at the Bob Carpenter Center in May.
Prettyman, a three-sport standout in cross country
and indoor and outdoor track & field from Newark,
DE (St. Mark’s High School), was a double-winner
as she was presented the Outstanding Female
Athlete of the Year and the Mary Ann Hitchens
Award; Saddler, who capped a record-breaking
career by leading the Blue Hens to the Colonial
Athletic Association title and an NCAA
Tournament title in March, was named
the Outstanding Male Athlete of the Year; and
Pierce, who earned All-CAA honors four times and
finished as the No. 2 leading rusher in UD history,
earned the Edgar Johnson Award.
The most prestigious honors
bestowed on a UD studentathlete, the Johnson and Hitchens
Awards are presented to a senior
letterwinner who has exhibited
the qualities of hard work,
dedication, leadership, fairness,
and striving for
excellence that
were the hallmarks
of Johnson’s and
Hitchens’ career.
A new exhibit honoring the Hitchens and Johnson Award
winners with their biographies and an action shot was
unveiled during the ceremony. The exhibit, which will also
include the names of all the past winners, is now located in
the lobby of the Bob Carpenter Center.

STUDENT-ATHLETES
The event drew over 500 studentathletes, coaches, and staff as
Delaware celebrated a successful
2013-14 athletics season. UD
Alumni Association President Ken
Jones presented the Athlete of the
Year Awards, which were selected
from a vote of the Blue Hens
head coaches, while UD Director
of Athletics Eric Ziady presented
the Johnson and Hitchens awards.
Hitchens was on hand to help
present the award as well.
Edgar Johnson Award
All-American football running back Andrew
Pierce, who excelled on the playing field and in the
community throughout his career, was the winner
of the Edgar Johnson Award.
A native of Bridgeton, NJ (Cumberland Regional
HS), Pierce enjoyed an exceptional four-year career
on the gridiron for the Blue Hens but also excelled
in his leadership qualities and the time he spent
serving the local community.
He arrived on campus as a walk-on in 2010
and through relentless hard work, perseverance,
and leading by example, became one of the finest
running backs in school
history. Not only was
he a fan favorite for his
determination, quiet
confidence, and classy
demeanor, he earned the
respect of his opponents,
his teammates, and his
coaches and twice served
as a team captain.
On the field, Pierce was
a four-year starter, led
the team in rushing four
consecutive years, and
earned All-CAA each of those seasons. He was
a two-time All-American, was named the CAA
Rookie of the Year in 2010, and led the Blue Hens
to the national championship game as a freshman.
His commitment to public service was equally
impressive as he took a leading role in the team’s
initiatives with the Sunday Breakfast Mission, Be
the Match Bone Marrow Drive, B Positive
Foundation, Habitat for Humanity, and the Food
Bank of Delaware. In addition, he was active as a
member of the Delaware Christian Athletes and
with the Blue Hens Leadership Program. Last fall
Pierce was selected as Delaware’s nominee for the
CAA’s Chuck Boone Leadership Award.

Lindsay Prettyman made several visits
to the stage during the evening as
she was named the Mary Ann Hitchens
Award winner, the Outstanding Female
Athlete of the Year, and the team
Most Valuable Player for each of her
three sports.
Whether she was racing through
the woods on the cross country course, running past
the competition on the indoor and outdoor track
oval, or putting in long hours towards her academic
endeavors, Prettyman has excelled in all her pursuits at
the University of Delaware. As a three-sport standout in
cross country and indoor and outdoor track and field,
she earned 12 letters, served as a team captain,
set 10 school records, and won 29 meet titles during her
remarkable tenure at UD.
As a four-year standout in cross country, she was named
team Most Valuable Player three times and led the
squad in 21 races, capturing three individual titles along
the way. She culminated her career last fall by becoming
just the third woman in UD history and first since 1984
to compete at the NCAA Championships.
She has also played a key role in several community
service initiatives, taking part in the Pigskin Pass for
Special Olympics Delaware, serving at numerous youth
track & field clinics, and taking a lead role in a shoe
drive that collected over 600 pairs of shoes for the More
Foundation Group that provides services for Africa and
other underprivileged communities around the world.

“The Ronald McDonald House was such
a great experience,” remarked UD
sophomore Ariel Shonk. “We got to decorate
white shirts with the kids, and they all loved
it, painting flowers, stars, names, and sports
on the shirts. One of the girls was having
so much fun she made eight shirts herself!
It was awesome that we were able to have
such a positive influence on their day.”
The Ronald McDonald House of Delaware
provides a safe, affordable “home away from

Renovations
a win for athletes
at all levels
Facility improvement projects
taking place on campus, all designed to
enhance the experience of thousands
of students for years to come.

Delaware Field House, which was vacant nearly
85 percent of the time during normal business hours,
is now being used by over a dozen varsity programs
as well as intramural, club, and recreational purposes
well into the evening hours, transforming it into a
center of activity.
2
T
hree projects were introduced this year by Eric Ziady,
Director of Athletics and Recreation Services. They
included a major renovation of Bob Hannah Stadium,
including the installation of an artificial turf surface, new
scoreboard, dugouts, bullpens and batting cages; the installation of a new all-weather outdoor track in the Delaware
Mini-Stadium (now Stuart and Suzanne Grant Stadium);
the transformation of the Delaware Field House into a firstclass indoor practice facility with an artificial turf surface;
and the total resurfacing of two natural grass soccer practice
fields that also are used for summer youth camps.
Bob Hannah Stadium
On April 27th, the newly renovated Bob Hannah Stadium
was rededicated in honor of Hall of Fame Coach Bob
Hannah. The year long, $2.5 million project included the
addition of a new turf field, dug outs, scoreboard, fencing,
batting cages, and bullpen areas. The new enhancements
have transformed the facility into one of the top venues in
the Colonial Athletic Association.
Stuart and Suzanne Grant Stadium
UD Athletics will use the Grants’ gift to complete a more
extensive stadium renovation. Plans include increasing both
the comfort-level and number of available seats by replacing
the current bleachers with upgraded and extended spectator
seating, which will expand the stadium’s seating capacity
to 1,400, including a number of handicapped-accessible
seats. To improve spectator sightlines and allow for storage
underneath, the new bleachers will be elevated.
Delaware Field House
The Delaware Field House project transformed the facility
into a first-class indoor practice complex. Artificial turf
was installed over the current tartan surface throughout
the arena, making it the largest indoor turf facility in the
state of Delaware. A total of 16 UD varsity athletics programs benefited from the improvements, giving those
teams an enhanced training facility and the ability to
hold full practice sessions during inclement weather.
The improved surface will also attract additional outside
groups and organizations.
This past spring, Bob Hannah Stadium underwent its first major improvements since 2000. The
revitalized stadium provides a competitive advantage
to Blue Hens baseball and allows the team to benefit
from a safer, more playable field and improved areas
for practice and skill development.

Generosity of Spirit
Article by Shannon Pote
U
D Trustee Stuart M. Grant and his wife,
Suzanne B. Grant, generously made a $1.5
million commitment to support renovations of the
previously named Delaware Mini Stadium.
This history-making gift is the largest
single donation
made by an individual or couple to be
allocated in support
of a UD Athletics
facility project.
“We’re pretty
serious about our
soccer,” admits Stuart Grant, whose
Stuart M. and Suzanne B. Grant
soccer-loving family
celebrated his 50th birthday with a trip to the 2010
World Cup in South Africa. Three of the Grants’ children play soccer, and Stuart Grant not only played
and coached soccer, he also refereed games around the
world, including the NCAA women’s soccer championship tournaments in 1982 and 1983.
The Grant family’s passion for soccer and for UD
is what has allowed them to identify the potential
impact that renovations to the existing stadium could
achieve. Prior upgrades were made to the facility in
2000, 2011, and in 2013, including the installation
of a natural Bermuda grass playing surface, a drainage
and irrigation system to maintain the new field and a
new Benyon all-weather track. But, there remained a
clear need for further renovations.
Carpenter Sports Building, named in honor of R.R.M. Carpenter Sr., a former member of the Board of Trustees
and long-time benefactor and supporter of the University, serves as host to the University of Delaware men’s and
women’s swimming and diving teams and as a facility for UD club sports, intramurals, and student, faculty, alumni,
and community recreational activities.
“There was a real feeling that additional renovations
to the stadium would assist the soccer and track
programs in their overall recruitment efforts,” says
Grant, “while at the same time allowing the University to better promote awareness of these wonderful
programs to a much larger audience.”
The 167,000 square-foot building includes the Harry W. Rawstrom Natatorium, two gymnasiums, including
Barbara Viera Court, student and employee fitness centers, racquetball courts, a rock-climbing wall, locker rooms,
and offices for the Division of Intercollegiate Athletics and Recreation staff and the Department of Health and Exercise
Sciences faculty.
“We hope our giving inspires others to give, whether
to athletics or to some other passion they hold,” says
Grant. “Whatever a donor’s passion is, UD has a
place to express it.”

Team wins fourth
national title
The UD Intercollegiate Figure Skating Team (UDFS)
won its fourth national title at the 2014 U.S. Figure
Skating Intercollegiate Team Championships held in
April and hosted by Adrian, MI College.
“Honestly, I was not surprised that we won nationals,”
said team vice president Clara Sherman. “Our team
is made up of incredibly intelligent, courageous,
talented and dedicated athletes. UDFS practiced every
chance they got and supported each other through
every moment of this season and this
national championship.”
Dana Sivak, UDFS team president, said the support
the team members have for each other is what truly
sets them apart from the other intercollegiate teams
and helped them earn their third national title in the
past four years.
“The positive energy of our team, especially on
competition days, helped us stay calm, confident, and
excited to represent UD,” Sivak said.
“UDFS is a truly unique and special team that
I am honored to be a part of,” said first year graduate
student and second year team member Kyle Herring.
“Being able to represent something more than just
yourself and skate for the good of your team and
school with the support of your friends, teammates and
coaches brings everyone’s skating up to a whole new
level and makes for an incredible competition.”

UD Athletics
Shows State
Pride with
Branding Initiatives
S
tate pride was at the forefront of several new University
of Delaware branding initiatives that were introduced
during the 2013-14 athletics season.
The new initiatives that began this past season included
displaying a patch of the State of Delaware on the game
uniforms of all 21 intercollegiate teams; painting the
outline of the state on the turf at the 50- yard line of
Delaware Stadium; a Blue Hen State of Mind theme for
the season; and having members of the Blue Hens football
team enter the field displaying both the Delaware State flag
and United States flag.
“The University of Delaware is proud to be the flagship
University for our state and we are excited to announce
these branding initiatives as they pertain to Blue Hens
Athletics,” said UD Director of Athletics and Recreation
Services Eric Ziady. “Blue Hens athletics holds such a
special place in the history of this state and the pride and
loyalty that our fans show is second to none. Delaware
Athletics wants to take every opportunity to show how
proud we are to be a part of the fabric of this great state.”
In addition to the Delaware State patch, the football
program’s uniforms now include six small stars representing
the six national championships won by the program.
“While the state patch represents all our teams’ commitment
to represent the state of Delaware, the six stars on the
football jerseys will be a direct representation of the rich
history and tradition that our football program has built
through the years, and will be a constant reminder to our
football student-athletes as to the goal of our program
going forward,” said Ziady.
Another theme throughout the season was the Blue Hen
State of Mind branding which is intended to celebrate
being Blue Hens in this very special state. The special logo
was used extensively in both print and online across the 21
Blue Hens intercollegiate athletics teams.
The “Blue Hen State of Mind” mentality encompasses
what it means to be part of the Blue Hens athletics family
while representing the state of Delaware. Whether in the
community, in the classroom, or on the playing field,

athletes and coaches took in the sights, visited the midway,
and interacted with fans and fair-goers.
In addition, members of the Delaware football team were
bussed to the UD athletics complex before every home
game to partake in a pregame march down Stadium Drive
led by the Delaware Band, Cheerleaders and Spirit Groups,
greeting fans and tailgaters on their way to the locker room.
Back in April, Delaware football head coach Dave Brock
and his team visited Milford High School and took part in
a scrimmage, interacted with fans, and took part in a youth
skills clinic. The trip marked the second straight year that
the Blue Hens visited Milford to give fans a preview of the
upcoming season.
Delaware football hosted its annual Delaware Day as part
of the Blue Hens game vs. in-state opponent Delaware
State at Delaware Stadium on Sept. 7. UD once again
reached out to state employees, including educators, as well
as first responders and others and invited them through
various offers to be a part of a day celebrating all things
Delaware.
There were no season ticket or parking price increases
for 2013 and 11 of 17 sections of the stadium actually
saw decreased rates, some by as much as 35 percent. In
addition, reduced UD Athletic Fund contribution levels in
five sideline reserved sections on the East side of Delaware
Stadium were implemented. Approximately 37 percent of
tickets available for sale to the general public require no
UDAF contribution.
Season ticket holders continue to have priority in
purchasing away game tickets, and receive benefit cards
good for discounts in the community and access to other
Blue Hens sporting events.

2014 NCAA Men’s Lacrosse Quarterfinals
High School State
CHAMPIONSHIPS
The University of Delaware’s Tubby Raymond Field at
Delaware Stadium served as the quarterfinal site for the
2014 NCAA Men’s Lacrosse Tournament in May.
DIAA State Football and Basketball
Championship games were held at UD
athletic facilities.
UD once again played a key role in
crowning state high school champions
during the 2013-14 season. The Bob
Carpenter Center was the site of the
state girls volleyball championships; boys
and girls basketball quarterfinal,
semifinal, and championship games;
Harry Rawstrom Natatorium at the
Carpenter Sports Building served as the
venue for the state high school swimming
& diving championships; the state boys
and girls tennis championships were
contested at the Delaware Field House
Tennis Courts; and for the first time since
1974, the state high school football title
games were held at Delaware Stadium.
Quarterfinal games between Duke and Johns Hopkins
and Drexel and Denver attracted enthusiastic crowds and
both games were televised live nationally on ESPNU TV.

During the 2013-2014 year, the Bob Carpenter Center
hosted over 175 events, bringing in nearly 300,000 visitors.
Some of these events included;

Delaware Stadium was one of 73 sites announced by the
NCAA as hosts for championships from 2013 through
2015. Sites were selected for 54 of the 89 championships
across 18 sports and all three divisions. Hofstra
University’s Shuart Stadium served as the other NCAA
Men’s Lacrosse quarterfinal site in 2014.
The University of Delaware is no stranger to hosting
NCAA Tournament action as the Blue Hens hosted the
first and second rounds of the 2013 NCAA Division
I Women’s Basketball Tournament, attracting sellout
crowds at the Bob Carpenter Center.
Delaware Stadium has hosted NCAA Men’s Lacrosse
Tournament action three others times. Delaware hosted
the NCAA Division I Championship Game in 1984, the
first-ever NCAA Final Four in 1986, and NCAA first
round games in 2002.
The 22,000-seat stadium serves not only as the home of
the Blue Hens men’s and women’s lacrosse teams but is
also one of the finest venues in the nation among NCAA
Division I Football Championship Subdivision programs.
The lighted stadium includes a synthetic FieldTurf surface
that was installed in 2009.
“Being selected to host the 2014 NCAA Division I
Men’s Lacrosse Quarterfinals at Delaware Stadium was
a great opportunity for the lacrosse community to enjoy
the excitement of Division I lacrosse in an outstanding
venue,” said Delaware head coach Bob Shillinglaw, who
has led six of his teams to NCAA Tournament play while
at the helm of the Blue Hens, including a trip to the
NCAA Final Four in 2007. “Delaware Stadium provides
easy access and excellent parking along with great tailgate
opportunities for spectators. Inside, every seat is right on
top of the action.
“The quarterfinals gave our University and athletic
department additional exposure and an opportunity
to showcase our facilities,” continued Shillinglaw.
“In addition, all lacrosse fans had the chance to enjoy
the campus and Newark’s Main Street with its many
restaurants and shops. It was a great weekend of lacrosse.
We were excited about having another opportunity to
host Division I Lacrosse action in 2014.”
In addition to the six previous NCAA men’s lacrosse
tournament games held at Delaware Stadium, the venue
has served as host to 25 NCAA Football Tournament
games, most recently the NCAA semifinals in 2010.

UDance raises record $850,000
to support cancer research efforts
The 2014 UDance event raised more than $850,000 to support the Andrew McDonough B+ Foundation.
The University of Delaware’s UDance student organization
held a record-setting 12-hour dance marathon at the Bob
Carpenter Center, raising $850,376.75 to support the
Andrew McDonough B+ (Be Positive) Foundation.
With seating for more than 5,000 people, the BCC serves
as the primary location for convocations, concerts, and
banquets at the University, as well as to men’s and
women’s basketball and volleyball.
The total far surpassed the $550,000 raised in 2013 and
was the largest increase in UDance history.
The dance marathon started at 9 a.m. and continued
until 9 p.m., when the fundraising total was announced.
This was the first year the growing event was held at
The BOB, and more than 3,500 people attended. “The
move to the Bob Carpenter Center marks a significant
milestone for UDance,” said Michael Smyth, one of the coexecutive coordinators of UDance.
“This was a landmark year for UDance in so many ways,”
Smyth said. “We are so appreciative of the support from the
entire University community. 850,000 reasons to be a proud
Blue Hen this week.”
UD’s spirit teams finished among the best in
the nation at the 2014 Universal Cheerleading
Association and Universal Dance Association National
Championships held Jan. 17-19, at the Walt Disney
World Resort in Orlando, FL, with the cheerleading
squad winning a national championship.
The UD cheerleaders finished first in the Division I
large coed competition, ending rival Morehead (Ky.)
State University’s 12-year winning streak.
Ben Schreiber, UD cheerleading coach, said taking the
top spot was sweet after finishing second for the past
seven years.
Blue-Gold Game
“Our team was, and still is, ecstatic,” Schreiber said.
“Morehead State is a great program with so much
tradition. It feels special to be on top for 2014.”
The University of Delaware has been proud to
host one of the state’s most prestigious events –
The Blue-Gold High School All-Star Game –
every summer since 1956 at Delaware Stadium.
The cheerleaders, Schreiber said, put a lot of adversity
behind them, logging countless hours learning and
practicing skills for the routine used at the nationals.
Sponsored by the DFRC (Delaware Foundation
Reaching Citizens), whose mission is to enrich the
lives of Delawareans with intellectual disabilities,
the game matches the top high school senior
football players from throughout the state in an
all-star format. The purpose of the event is to
spread awareness about intellectual disabilities
while raising funds for programs that benefit these
children. More than 50 public, private, parochial,
vo-tech, and charter schools from across the state
participate in the event, helping to spread DFRC’s
message of diversity and acceptance throughout
their schools and communities.
“The factor that single handedly contributed to the
team’s success is the word ‘family,’” Schreiber said.
“They put each other and the team above themselves
more than any other team I have ever coached.”
Kyle Rogers, a senior pre-law major, said that “to hear
the announcer say ‘Delaware’ as the national champion
validated all the time and effort that we put in
preparing for that single, two-minute routine.”
“At the end of the day, this is how every senior wants to
end their career,” Rogers said. “I’m thrilled that I was
able to be part of a program that is so talented and to
establish friendships that will last a lifetime.”

Celebrating
Champions
Now in its third year, the Celebration of Scholarship
– Athletics gives coaches and student-athletes an
opportunity to engage with the individuals and
organizations who support Blue Hens Athletics.
“I think the best part of this is that it allows the
people that invest so much both in time and effort as
well as resources, to see the byproduct and the result
of their investment,” said UD Director of Athletics
Eric Ziady. “There’s no better way for us to do it
than with our student-athletes face to face.”
In his remarks at the event, University of Delaware
President Patrick Harker acknowledged and thanked
donors for their willingness to make such individual
connections and for their ability to see each studentathlete as much more than a name and number on
a team’s roster.
“Donors like you support not just college athletes,
but college students,” said Harker, “graduates
who will be successful long after their playing
days are over.”
Darelle Lake Riabov, a member of UD’s Class of
1973 and the immediate past-president of the
University of Delaware Alumni Association and a
current member of the College of Arts and Sciences
Advisory Council, spoke on behalf of athletic
scholarship donors. In May 2012, the Riabovs
made a generous commitment to establish the
Darelle Lake Riabov and John Riabov Volleyball
Scholarship, the UD women’s volleyball program’s
first endowed scholarship.
“The lessons I have learned,
and the relationships I have
built, will stay with me far
beyond my time on campus.”
— Alex Alois
Riabov likened the Celebration of Scholarship –
Athletic audience to “champion athletes,” engaged
with UD at the highest levels.
UD student-athletes and coaches in the lobby

fans and greatest supporters.
“You are an elite group of UD supporters who have
an unwavering dedication to see your studentathlete succeed,” said Riabov, addressing the crowd.
“If you think about it, there are two kinds of
‘champions’ in this room — the student-athletes
and the UD donors who champion them.”
Alex Alois said she will “bring the fight of a Delaware
Blue Hen to whatever challenge life throws at me.”
Alex Alois, a senior majoring in communications,
spoke at the event on behalf of female athletes.
Alois is a defender on the women’s lacrosse team
and the recipient of the Mary Ann Hitchens
Athletic Scholarship.
Alois was “humbled” to receive a scholarship
named in honor of someone she considers, “a
pioneer in women’s athletics.” Mary Ann Hitchens,
a member of the Class of 1967 who received a
master’s degree in 1971, spent over 40 years at UD
— first as a student, then as head coach of both
field hockey and women’s basketball, and finally as
a nationally recognized athletics administrator.
“Her legacy is as vibrant today as it was in her days
of service,” said Alois of Hitchens. “Now, every
female athlete with a dream of competing at the
Division I level wearing the Delaware Blue and
Gold can confidently pursue that dream.”
UD Career Services for Athletes hosts Athlete Networking Night
Sponsored by Career Services for Athletes and the
Career Services Center, the event gave UD athletes
– who tend to have extremely demanding schedules
and cannot always attend campus-wide career
events due to practice, competition and travel – an
opportunity to network with employers across many
diverse industries.
“It’s a learning process,” said Christine Motta,
who oversees Career Services for Athletes and
organized the event. “It is just as important for our
freshmen to observe and get exposure to an event
like this as it is for our sophomores, juniors and
seniors who may be actively pursuing internships
and full-time jobs.”

event like this. “Attending the Networking Night
really opened my eyes about what I should be doing
right now for my future,” said Smith. “I decided
that I really need to meet with Christine Motta
from Career Services for Athletes to help me figure
some things out.”
More than 150 UD student-athletes attended an
Athlete Career Networking Night held at the Bob.
This was the first time Kierstan Smith, a junior on
the women’s lacrosse team, experienced a career
“Career development is a four year-process,” said
Motta, who was named UD associate athletic
director for student-athlete development and senior
woman administrator in July, 2014. “It is a vital
component of our athletes’ total college experience.
We want them to take steps to explore their values,
interests and opportunities in their career field of
interest as early in their college careers as possible.
An event like this is a great place to start.”
Student-Athletes Honored at
Commencement Ceremony
Over 125 student-athletes were among
the 5,564 who were honored as part
of the University of Delaware’s 165th
annual Commencement ceremony at
Delaware Stadium in May.
Nearly 25,000 family and friends were
on hand to witness the conferring of
degrees under sunny skies.
United States Vice-President Joe
Biden, a 1965 Delaware graduate,
delivered the commencement address.
Forgoing the offering of advice, Biden
noted that no class ever gets to choose
the world into which it graduates.
A total of 40 studentathletes were named to
the National College Athlete
Honor Society. The award

“When every class enters into the
history of the nation, that history
up to that point has been written
by others,” Biden said. “Once every
couple of generations, a graduating
class will enter a point in our history
where they actually have a chance to
change the trajectory of their country.”
Biden’s speech was followed by a

This past football season was a nostalgic one, as the
University of Delaware welcomed back over 100
former Blue Hens football players and coaching staff.
A total of 55 former players and 8 staff members
returned to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the 2003
NCAA Division I-AA national championship season
on September 28th. Out of the 55 player roster from
the 1963 team, 37 former players attended the 50th

Members from Delaware’s 21 athletics teams made over 3,000 calls to
donors over a four-day period to thank them for their generous support
of Blue Hens Athletics.
“This annual event is a wonderful way for our student-athletes to reach
out and say thank you to our alumni, parents and friends whose generous
support continues to help us achieve our goal of developing leaders
academically, athletically, and socially,” said UD Director of Athletics and
Recreation Services Eric Ziady.
Additionally, the event helps create a culture of gratitude and philanthropy
among Blue Hens student-athletes that will serve them well as future
Delaware alumni.

letters in her career, including four in outdoor
track and three each in indoor track and
cross country, and is the only women’s cross
country runner in school history to win the
conference meet twice, capturing the America

Freibott, HS59,
Fred Freibott, HS59, a four-year
varsity letterwinner in swimming, enjoyed a
record-breaking career. He died in 2011, and
his award was accepted by his wife, Marcy.
He set nine school freshman records in 1953
and then led the Blue Hens to the Middle
Atlantic Conference team title in 1954,
setting seven more school records.
Gregg Larson, AG81, earned
five letters at UD in football and wrestling,
was a member of teams that posted a
combined record of 49-14 and competed in
NCAA Tournament action in both sports.
Competing in the 190-pound class in
wrestling, Larson had a perfect 25-0 regular
season record.
Sam Miller, AS76, a dominating
defensive lineman in football, was a fixture as
an All-American defensive end for the Blue
Hens in the mid-1970s and led the squad to
two NCAA tournament appearances. Miller
earned All-American notice four times, AllEast honors three straight years and remains
the only down lineman in UD history to lead
the squad in tackles for an entire season. Sam
was fortunately able to attend the Hall of
Fame Induction ceremony, but sadly passed
away in May.
Elaine Pomian
(Knobloch), EG82, who earned four
letters in lacrosse and two in field hockey,
played a key role for the Blue Hens lacrosse
team during its runs to national titles in 1981
and 1982. A four-year standout in lacrosse,
Pomian was a high-scoring attack who set
school records for assists and still ranks among
Delaware’s all-time leaders.
Fred Rullo, SAS63, has been
an integral part of Blue Hens athletics as a
Tom
DiMuzio, AS71
student-athlete, fan, and contributor since
he first arrived on the UD campus. Rullo
earned four letters as a two-sport performer
in football and baseball. As a backup
quarterback and punter for the Blue Hens
football team, he lettered in 1961 and 1962
and helped the 1962 squad post a 7-2 record,
capture the Middle Atlantic Conference and
earn the Lambert Cup Trophy as the top team
in the East.
Tyresa Smith, HS07, was a
phenomenal athlete who worked tirelessly
to become a complete all-around basketball
player during her four years with the
Delaware women’s squad in 2003-07.
Smith was an outstanding defender and a
consistently high scorer who used her slashing
moves and deadly medium-range jump shot
to pile up 1,635 points, finishing her career
ranked No. 2 on the all-time UD list. She
was a first-team All-CAA selection twice
and became the first Delaware player to be
selected in the WNBA draft.
Dave Yates, BE71, HS76M, a
three-year starter at second base, was one
of the stars of the 1970 Blue Hens baseball
squad that went 22-6, captured the Middle
Atlantic Conference title, won the NCAA
District II championship and became the only
UD squad to compete at the College World
Series. Yates led the Blue Hens to a three-year
mark of 52-23 and graduated holding 12
school records. He led the team with a .444
batting average in 1969.

WHAT THEY’RE SAYING…
Dave Yates (1968-70; All-American Infielder
and UD Athletics Hall of Fame Member)
“It’s hard to put into words what Coach Hannah
has meant to so many people. We all have so many
different memories and relationships. I have been
fortunate to know him as a coach, as a friend, and
as a father-figure. It’s exciting to be part of all this
and exciting that he is being recognized like this.”
Bruce Fad (1968-70;
All-American Outfielder)
“Coach Hannah means an awful lot to me and
always has. He is a really special guy and a
wonderful man of very high integrity. I really
enjoyed playing for him and have enjoyed
knowing him. It’s been a pleasure to reconnect
over the last 45 years.”
Victor Sage (1998-2001; All-Region Pitcher)

“Today marks another

University of Delaware,”
said UD Director of
Athletics Eric Ziady in
the pre-game ceremony.
“The Bob Hannah

“Playing for Coach Hannah was an honor and a
privilege. He taught me a lot about baseball and
a lot about life in general.”
John Brelus (1975-78; Four-year Pitcher
and Letterwinner)
“What Coach Hannah did for me is hard to put
into words. Any success that I have had in life really
comes from the foundation that was built at the
University of Delaware. The values he taught us
as teammates set a great foundation for the rest
of my life.”
Darren Pulito (1996-98;
All-American Infielder)
“I was fortunate to play under him (Bob Hannah)
for several years as well as with Coach (Jim)
Sherman. They were kind enough to bring me in
as a transfer and gave me a great opportunity to
come and help the program. ”
Mickey DeMatteis (1976-78; 1978 Captain)
“It’s been fantastic coming back and being
part of this. Our 1970s group has stayed in
touch throughout the years. We are a tight-knit
brotherhood. Coach Hannah and Coach (Bruce)
Carlyle were so instrumental not only for what they
taught us on the field but off the field as well.”
