OPERATIC CANTORIAL CONCERT
What a beautiful afternoon! We had a
great group of people in attendance.
Everyone enjoyed the wonderful
performances by the world renown
Soprano Elizabeth Caballero and the
acclaimed Cantor Stephen Texon. The
concert was flawless, opera lyrics from
famous composers along with Cantorial
pieces were included in the program.
Sergio J. Puig accompanied them at the
piano and you could see as he caressed
the keys effortlessly and the notes
simply flowed.
The concert, which was enjoyed by an
audience composed of people of all ages
is a qualified triumph for our Temple.
We strive to present the best available,
and with the continued cooperation and
donations from our members, we hope to be able to bring more entertainment
of this caliber. We would like to thank our most generous sponsors,
Oscar and Rosita Boruchin, and Isaac and Nieves Olemberg.
For those who missed this wonderful OPERATIC CANTORIAL CONCERT, we

Targeted Killing Vindicated

Although Bin Laden wore no military uniform and held no official military
rank, he was an appropriate military target. As the titular and spiritual head
of Al Qaeda, he was the functional equivalent of a head of state or commander
in chief of a terrorist army. From the beginning of recorded history, killing the
king was the legitimate object of military action. The very phrase "checkmate"
means "the king is dead, "signifying the successful end of the battle.

It has been an exciting, yet
challenging year. We have
done our best to meet the
needs of our members in
difficult economic times
letting the heart of Temple
Beth Shmuel be our guide.
The Board of Directors maintains its policy of
assisting every member and keeping our doors
open to anyone seeking a Jewish home.
Summer is here and our dedicated staff and
volunteers are busily engaged in preparing our
sacred space to welcome you for the
High Holidays and the new school year. We are
in the process of collecting membership dues
and commitments. As we do so, we are very
conscious of the fact that the economic situation
has hurt many in our community. Now more than
ever we are mindful of the generosity of those
who have stepped forward in financial support of
our Temple Beth Shmuel family. Our hope is that
this year we can continue to count on you and
others who find themselves financially able.
Temple Beth Shmuel gives us the opportunity to
celebrate the joy of Judaism by tapping into
our spiritual lives, intellectual curiosity and
engaging in a caring community. We rely on the
commitment of each one of us to keep our
community strong and growing. Because
membership dues cover less than half of TBS
operating budget, we depend on your continued
and increased generosity to the annual Kol Nidre
Appeal. As we renew ourselves in the New Year,
please help Temple Beth Shmuel continue
to grow and service our members and the
community.

environment, Temple Beth Shmuel is going

This year we have created numerous social,
educational and spiritual opportunities to draw
our congregation and the community together.
The Cuban Jews have made history since back
in 1961 when “El Circulo” - Cuban Hebrew
Congregation of Miami was built. And this year,
we continue to make history as we get ready for
the celebration of our 50th Jubilee Anniversary.
Join us in the festivities as we celebrate and
honor the men and women who have contributed
to the Cuban Hebrew Congregation – Temple
Beth Shmuel throughout the years, walk or ride
with us as we join the City of Miami Beach
Veterans Parade and dance the evening away
at the Golden Anniversary Gala Dinner on
November 12, 2011.

Each adult attending the services is required to present their High Holiday tickets and a photo ID for
admission to the services held at Temple Beth Shmuel / Cuban Hebrew Congregation. High Holiday
tickets will be mailed upon receipt of payment. There will be no exceptions as we are taking proper
procedures for the security of those who attend the services. Your ticket is intended for your use only; it
is neither transferable nor replaceable.
Those who have suffered hardship and require financial assistance for their High Holiday tickets, please
contact Mrs. Becky Cohen. For those of you who have family members coming from out of town and
require High Holiday tickets, there are High Holiday reciprocal seating request forms that can be sent to
you. The only requirement is that they are in good standing and have their membership paid up to date
in their synagogue.
Members will receive a list of Honors/Aliyots for the High Holidays. If you are interested in continuing
participating in specific Honors/Aliyots during the High Holidays, please let us know as soon as possible.

WOMEN’S LEAGUE
Message from the Women’s League

During the month of May, we held our special Mother’s Day Shabbat Services. It was a very well
attended event and everyone enjoyed our special program together with the Shabbat Services.
Afterwards, our Kiddush luncheon was a huge success, as usual. For Father’s Day, we also had a
wonderful program and one which was well attended by our congregants and enjoyed by everyone.
Our Kiddush luncheon after the Shabbat Services was very well received by all who attended. All our
ladies of the Women’s League have done a great job in organizing these two events every year, but
especially our Chairlady, Tete Wenguer, who year after year exceeds our expectations. Kudos for
everyone!
We held our annual luncheon on Thursday, June 23rd, 2011 in our cocktail room and were entertained
by a Cuban musician, Daysi Celia Almirall, who played an array of old Cuban songs plus a few Jewish
songs. We had a big turnout of women from all over the community, who came to enjoy and have an
afternoon of fun. They also came to honor our very own past president, Anita Sapoznik. She was very
happy and touched by our decision to make her our Woman of the Year. We all danced a horah to the
tune of Hava Nagilah and made a circle around Anita to show her our love and support. We wish her
and Lazaro to be well in the future and enjoy life every minute.
Now we have to look ahead to the rest of the year 2011 when El Circulo celebrates our 50th Anniversary
and lots of events are being planned. Please make sure that you are here with us to celebrate this
important year.

Three Temples honor Congresswoman Ileana Ros-Lehtinen

On Sunday, June 5th, 2011, a total of 200
members of the Cuban Jewish Community of
Miami, represented by the Cuban Hebrew
Congregation-Temple Beth Shmuel, Sephardic
Congregation of Florida-Temple Moses and
Temple Menorah, gathered at noon for brunch
at Temple Moses to honor Congresswoman
Ileana Ros-Lehtinen. She had recently assumed
the position of Chairperson of the Foreign
Relations Committee, one of the most influential
Committees of the United States Congress. By
honoring her, Congresswoman Ros-Lehtinen
and all of us, were also honoring her mother, the
late Amanda (“Mandy”) Adato Ros, who passed
away on January 28, 2011, having been born to
a Cuban Sephardic family. At the funeral,
Marcos Kerbel and Roland Behar approached
Ileana to express their condolences and Ileana
said to them that “her mother always reminded
her never to forget her Jewish roots.” From that
painful moment, the idea was born to honor
Ileana and her mother, and for all three
Synagogues to join in this tribute.
Bruce Libhaber, Secretary of the Board of
Temple Moses, gave a very emotional and
eloquent opening remarks as the event’s Master
of Ceremonies. He reminded us that this Honor
follows Jewish law, “since our Rabbis teach us
that it is important that when another human
being does something that is helpful, it is an
honor, not merely appropriate, but it requires
that we say thank you.” He addressed the
audience by telling about Congresswoman
Ileana Ros-Lehtinen:
“Thank you to a tireless advocate for
the State of Israel. Thank you for not
forgetting that a true friend of Israel is a true
friend of the United States. Thank you for
remembering that a nuclear free Iran and
Syria is the safest way to preserve the State
of Israel. Thank you for reminding us and
the world of the brutal dictatorship that
continues to exist a mere 90 miles south of
the United States’ border. Thank you,
Congresswoman Ileana Ros-Lehtinen, for
never forgetting where you came from.”
The timing was very appropriate because that
same week, we celebrated Shavuot, G-d’s gift to
Moses and the Jewish people of the Ten
Commandments, being the 5th Commandment,
Dexter Lehtinen, Ileana's husband;
Cantor Isaac Salinas; Ileana Ros-Lehtinen;
Marcos A. Kerbel
Honor your Father and your Mother.
Bruce Libhaber also stated that when we honor
our mother and father, we are thanking the
Creator. It is one of the few obligations that exist
throughout our lifetime, but most importantly, it
continues to exist even when one’s mother or
father passes physically from this earth.
Speakers for the Congregations were Moises
Egozi, President, and Roland Behar, Director of
Temple Moses; Rosita Zelcer, President, and
Dr. Isidoro Morjaim, Past President of Temple
Menorah, and Marcos Kerbel,, Past President on
behalf of Temple Beth Shmuel. Other Past
Presidents of the three Congregations were also
in attendance, as well as Rabbi Pearlson and
Cantor Isaac Salinas, who chanted a Prayer.
Marcos spoke of Ileana’s admirable personal
qualities as a servant-leader. He stated that “if
there is ever going to be peace between the
Arabs and the Jewish people, it is because one
day, hopefully, in the not too distant future, Ileana
Ros-Lehtinen will be the leader of the negotiating
team. “Ileana, you love this community, this
community loves you, Israel loves you, Cubans
and all people of this globe who love freedom
and democracy also love you,” he said.
Dr. Isidoro Morjaim and Roland Behar spoke
about Ileana’s statesman attributes and their
knowledge of the Adato family who both knew
well in Cuba going back to their grandparents’
days.

Ileana, who was accompanied by her husband,
children, father, brother, aunt, and staff, spoke
about the dynamic influence her mother
“Mandy” had on her, as her grandfather had on
her mother. She had the correct Cuban saying
for every occasion. For her mother, every day
was special and she was a friend of everyone
and did not have a single enemy. She was
always at her husband’s side and planned every
day around him. Her mother was very proud of
her Jewish blood and heritage. She felt very
much at home in the Jewish faith and the Jewish
traditions.”
Temple Beth Shmuel welcomed 75 people from
Cascade Lakes Jewish Heritage Club from
Boyton Beach to tour our beautiful Synagogue
and enjoy Vilma’s Cuban coffee.
In
conclusion,
that
Sunday
we
were
commemorating two distinctly Jewish Mitzvot:
1) To thank someone who has helped us and
2) To participate in the honoring of one’s mother.

Targeted Killing Vindicated
The decision to target and kill Osama Bin Laden
is being applauded by all decent people.
Approval to capture or kill this mass-murdering
terrorist leader was given by Presidents Obama
and Bush. It was the right decision, both morally
and legally.
Although Bin Laden wore no military uniform
and held no official military rank, he was an
appropriate military target. As the titular and
spiritual head of Al Qaeda, he was the functional
equivalent of a head of state or commander in
chief of a terrorist army. From the beginning of
recorded history, killing the king was the
legitimate object of military action. The very
phrase "checkmate" means "the king is dead,
"signifying the successful end of the battle.
Yet there are those who claim that all targeted
killings are immoral and illegal. These critics
characterize such actions as "extrajudicial
executions" and demand that terrorist leaders
and functionaries be treated as common
criminals who must be arrested and brought to
trial.
The operation that resulted in Bin Laden's death
was a military action calculated to kill rather than
to "arrest" him. It is possible, though highly
unlikely, that he could have been captured alive
and brought to trial. The decision to employ
military personnel with guns, rather than a drone
firing rockets, was probably made by generals
rather than lawyers.
Had it been militarily preferable to fire a rocket,
that option would almost certainly have been
selected--as it was by the NATO forces that
rocketed Ghadafy's compound. A rocket attack
would have been a pure targeted killing with no
possibility of live capture. The operation directed
against Bin Laden may have been designed, in
part, to have preserved the theoretical option of
"arrest", though the likelihood of a live capture
was virtually impossible under the circumstances.
Indeed it is likely that Bin Laden's death was
deemed preferential to his capture and trial,
because the latter would have raised the
probability that Al Qaeda would take hostages
and try to exchange them for Bin Laden.
Indeed, a US national security official has
confirmed to Reuters that "this was a kill
operation" and there was no desire to capture
Bin Laden alive. This was a targeted kill appropriate for a military combatant but not for an
ordinary (or even extraordinary) criminal.

Nonetheless, our government felt it necessary to
announce that Bin Laden was shot after he
allegedly resisted thus suggesting he was not
killed in cold blood. But it is clear that he would
have been killed whether or not he resisted,
since this was a kill operation from the outset and
it is unlikely he was ever given the opportunity to
surrender an opportunity not required under the
laws of war.
Accordingly, those who have opposed the very
concept of targeted killings should be railing
against the killing of Osama Bin Laden.
Among others, these critics include officials in
Britain, France, Italy, Russia, the EU, Jordan,
and the United Nations. Former British Foreign
Secretary once said, "The British government
has made it repeatedly clear that so-called
targeted assassinations of this kind are unlawful,
unjustified and counterproductive." The French
foreign ministry has declared "that extrajudicial
executions contravene international law and are
unacceptable." The Italian Foreign Minister has
said, "Italy, like the whole of the European Union,
has always condemned the practice of targeted
assassinations." The Russians have asserted
that "Russia has repeatedly stressed the
unacceptability of extrajudicial settling of scores
and 'targeted killings.'" Javier Solana has noted
that the "European Union has consistently
condemned extrajudicial killings." The Jordanians
have said, "Jordan has always denounced this
policy of assassination and its position on this
has always been clear." And Kofi Annan has
declared "that extrajudicial killings are violations
of international law."
Yet none of these nations, groups or individuals
have criticized the targeted killing of
Osama Bin Laden by the US. The reason is
obvious. All the condemnations against targeted
killing was directed at one country. Guess which
one? Israel, of course.
Israel developed the concept of targeted
killings and used it effectively against the
"Osama Bin Ladens" of Hamas, who directed
terrorist attacks against Israeli civilians, killing
and wounding more Israelis, as a percentage of
its population, than the number killed by
Bin Laden. It was when Israel managed to kill the
head of Hamas, that the international community,
with the striking exception of the United States,
decided that targeted killing was illegal and
immoral.

But now that it has been used against an enemy
of Britain, France, Italy and other European
nations, the tune has changed. Suddenly
targeted killing is not only legal and moral, it is
praiseworthy (except, of course, to Hamas, which
immediately condemned the US killing of
Bin Laden).
Well the truth is that when used properly,
targeted killing has always been deserving of
approval—even when employed by Israel, a
nation against which a double standard always
seems to be applied.
Indeed, in Israel, the use of targeted killings has
been closely regulated by its Supreme Court and
permitted only against terrorists who are actively
engaged in ongoing acts of terrorism. In the
United States, on the other hand, the decisions to
use this tactic is made by the President alone,
without any form of judicial review. So let the
world stop applying a double standard to Israel
and let it start judging the merits and demerits of
military tactics such as targeted killing. On
balance, targeted killing, when used prudently
against proper military targets, can be an
effective, lawful, and moral tool in the war against
terrorism.

Temple Beth Shmuel - Cuban Hebrew Congregation of Miami, Inc. has obtained 60
gravesites in the new "Genesis" section at Lakeside Memorial Park. These sites are in an
exclusive section created for Temple Beth Shmuel - Cuban Hebrew Congregation of Miami
members and their families. Each grave costs $2,500-$3,000, payable to Temple Beth
Shmuel - Cuban Hebrew Congregation.
It is wise to do planning and purchase long before the gravesites will be needed. It relieves
the family of a difficult decision if death comes unexpectedly. If you were to purchase
similar gravesites at a time of need, the price would be approximately $5,000.
The graves are located in a brand new section, beautifully landscaped, and can be marked
with either a monument or a memorial plaque. Making a pre-need investment of this sort
is a wise decision for you and your extended family.

Oasis de paz
Buscando información sobre la vida de los árabes
israelíes, descubrí la existencia de una comunidad
llamada Neve Shalom / Wahat al Salam lo que, en
hebreo y en árabe, significa Oasis de Paz. Me
pareció interesante, no sólo por lo peculiar, si no
por lo que nos enseña a todos, judíos y árabes.
Neve Shalom / Wahat al Salam fue fundada en
1970 por el hermano dominico Bruno Hussar en
tierras adyacentes al Monasterio de Latrún, se
encuentra en un punto geográfico equidistante de
Jerusalén, Tel Aviv y Jaffa. Crea un espacio donde
cristianos, judíos y musulmanes conviven en paz y
armonía. Los primeros se asentaron en 1977 y
desde el 2010 son más de 60 familias.
Sus residentes están demostrando la posibilidad
de coexistencia entre judíos y palestinos mediante
el desarrollo de una comunidad basada en la
tolerancia mutua, el respeto y la colaboración. La
comunidad, sin afiliación política como tal, es
gobernada democráticamente por sus miembros
quienes, a su vez, son propietarios de la tierra.
Los ciudadanos árabe-israelíes son casi dos
millones de personas que constituyen alrededor
del 24 por ciento de la población del país. Este
segmento se compone de árabes que decidieron
quedarse en Israel luego de la Declaración de
Independencia en 1948. En general, cuentan con
los mismos derechos de cualquier ciudadano
israelí. Sin embargo, como en cualquier otra
sociedad, como minoría, sufren algún grado de
discriminación y ciertas limitaciones en la compra
de terrenos en determinadas áreas específicas de
valor estratégico.
La mayoría de los árabes israelíes son
musulmanes sunitas, aunque también coexisten
cristianos, drusos y circasianos. Con excepción de
los circasianos y los drusos quienes han logrado
altas posiciones en el gobierno y en las fuerzas
armadas, los árabes israelíes en general no están
obligados a servir en las Fuerzas de Defensa de
Israel, aunque muchos sirven como voluntarios.
Entre ellos, se destacan los beduinos resultando
ser unos magníficos soldados en defensa de su
país.
La mayor parte de los árabes israelíes viven en la
zona noroccidental, principalmente en poblaciones
donde administran sus asuntos internos, manejan
sus escuelas y donde el árabe,- una de las lenguas
oficiales de Israel, es el lenguaje utilizado.
Controlan sus tribunales religiosos, dirimiendo
asuntos relacionados con matrimonios y divorcios.
Además, hablan, leen y escriben hebreo con
fluidez y ven los programas de la televisión israelí.
Más de un 20 por ciento de los árabes israelíes

cohabitan en las ciudades con sus conciudadanos
judíos, destacándose el caso de Haifa, uno de
las más importantes de Israel, ejemplo de
coexistencia, donde frecuentan los mismos
restaurantes, centros comerciales salas de cine y
discotecas. Ahí se ha dado el caso de que una
bomba terrorista detonada en un restaurante
asesine tanto a árabes como a judíos. Muchos
jóvenes árabes israelíes han adoptado las
prácticas de los judíos israelíes seculares, como el
uso de ropa al estilo occidental, el gusto por la
música moderna y los avances tecnológicos.
Todos los ciudadanos de Israel tienen el derecho a
expresarse libremente y a participar activamente
en el proceso político, hasta el punto que partidos
que se oponen a la propia existencia de Israel son
parte de su parlamento (Knesset). Los árabes
israelíes han estado presentes en el Knesset
desde la fundación del estado y ahí ocupan hoy 13
de los 120 escaños posibles tanto representando
sus partidos como partidos clásicamente israelíes:
Kadima (Majalli Whbee), Likud (Ayoob Kara) e

Reda Mansour, cónsul general para el sureste de
Estados Unidos; Salim Joubran, de la Corte
Suprema; Majalli Whbee, ex viceministro de
Relaciones Exteriores; Oscar Abu-Razek, director
general del Ministerio del Interior; Raleb Majadele,
Laborista, primer musulmán miembro del gabinete
y Jamal Hakrush, musulmán, comandante de la
Policía Nacional en el 2006.
En el campo de la cultura y la academia, Israel se
ufana de tener a Majd el-Haj, decano de
investigación de la Universidad de Haifa; Rana
Raslan, quien en 1999 se convirtió en la primera
árabe israelí en ganar un concurso de Miss Israel y
Khaled Abu Toameh, corresponsal de asuntos
palestinos de el Jerusalem Post, US News and
World Report. En el 2004, Bnei Sakhnin se
convirtió en el primer equipo de fútbol árabe-israelí
en ganar la Copa de Israel para tener derecho a la
Copa de Europa. Asala Shahada, medalla de oro
en los Juegos Macabeos al ganar dijo, “ Los
Macabeos pertenecen no sólo a los Judíos, sino
también a todos los israelíes, y estoy orgullosa de
ser Israelí’’.
La práctica demuestra que es posible la
convivencia de ambos pueblos y que se logre un
Oasis de Paz, eliminando la interferencia de los
terroristas, enemigos de la felicidad de todos. Que

When things go wrong as they sometimes will,
