Lurvey Dwarf Japanese Maple Collection
Acer japonicum 'Aconitifolium' 10 Year Size, Habit: 8-10’ H/W, Mounded Exposure: Full Sun, Part Shade Summer Foliage: Green Fall Foliage: Red Sometimes called Fernleaf Fullmoon Maple, the 'Aconitifolium' will grow slowly to 8-10' tall in a mounded and bushy habit. The cultivar name refers to the fern-like foliage which resembles that of monkshood (Aconitum). People also correlate its common name, Dancing Peacock, with its spectacular and feathery fall show of brilliant scarlet fall color. The green leaves are deeply dissected into 9-10 wide lobes. This maple has something to offer even before the leaves appear in the spring, with small reddish clusters of flowers that give way to samaras that ripen late summer or early fall. No serious insect or disease problems round out the 'Aconitifolium' as a must-have in any landscape. Acer japonicum 'Green Cascade' 10 Year Size, Habit: 6’ H x 8’ W, Weeping Exposure: Full Sun, Part Shade Summer Foliage: Green Fall Foliage: Yellow 'Green Cascade' could be called the 'Viridis' of the Full Moon Maples with its green weeping habit. Deeply lobed leaves are similar to that of the 'Aconitifolium' and will turn the same shocking array of autumn colors. The emerald green leaves are much thinner and very deeply dissected, making its appearance stick out against other weeping maples. In 10 years, this plant should be around 6' tall by 8' wide. Branching is often exposed, giving it a very natural bonsailike appearance. It can take full sun, and its fall color will depend on the amount of exposure it receives. Acer palmatum 'Amber Ghost' Ghost chasers take note! Astonishing melon-hued leaves with green reticulation are far from invisible in spring. Summer brings on increasingly-deeper amber tones until fall when fiery reds and golds take over. BOO! 10 Year Size, Habit: 10’ H x 8’ W, Upright Exposure: Full Sun, Part Shade Summer Foliage: Amber Fall Foliage: Fiery Red/Gold Acer palmatum ' Baby Ghost' Leaves show more purple and red than other selections but still has the prominent reticulated leaf quality. 10 Year Size, Habit: 5-6’ H x 4-5’ W, Upright Exposure: Full Sun, Part Shade Summer Foliage: Greenish/Purple Fall Foliage: Orange/Red Acer palmatum 'Bloodgood' This plant deserves its rank as one of the most popular Japanese Maples and ornamental trees. 'Bloodgood' is a large leafed, vigorous upright tree, growing from 16-20' tall. It has deep red leaves that mature to a rich purple in early spring. The color retention through the hottest summer months is notable, as well. This hardy maple is always in high demand. 10 Year Size, Habit: 16-20’ H/W, Upright Exposure: Full Sun, Part Shade Summer Foliage: Red Fall Foliage: Red/Purple Acer palmatum 'Crimson Queen' This dissectum is one of the finest in the Japanese Maple family. 'Crimson Queen' is a slower growing, and more tightly weeping Laceleaf, than others. At maturity, this variety may only grow to 6' tall with a 10' spread. It has been in cultivation since the 1960's and has earned its popularity for retention of its unsurpassed color. 'Crimson Queen' holds its burgundy coloring throughout the year until it evolves into a brilliant crimson in the fall. 10 Year Size, Habit: 6’ H x 10’ W, Weeping Exposure: Full Sun, Part Shade Summer Foliage: Red Fall Foliage: Scarlet Acer palmatum 'Grandma Ghost' If variety is the spice of life, then the matriarch of the Ghost Family is not to be outdone. Pale pink foliage emerges in spring and constantly changes throughout the growing season. Summer color is green with distinct veins. Just like any grandma, she needs protection from hot afternoon sun. 10 Year Size, Habit: 4-6’ H/W, Broad/Rounded Exposure: Part Shade Summer Foliage: Cream/White Fall Foliage: Orange/Red Acer palmatum 'Hubb's Red Willow' Slender strap-like leaves resemble bamboo. Branches and leaves are purple until a show of fiery orange and red appear in Fall. 10 Year Size, Habit: 8’ H x 4’ W, Upright Exposure: Full Sun, Part Shade Summer Foliage: Purple/Red Fall Foliage: Orange/Red Acer palmatum 'Mikawa yatsubusa' 10 Year Size, Habit: 5’ H x 4’W, Rounded Exposure: Full Sun, Part Shade Summer Foliage: Green Fall Foliage: Orange/Red Considered the finest of the Japanese maples! This dwarf tree has an outstanding structure; new shoots are very short and stubby, forming a compact and little plant. Although it reaches just 5' tall and 4' wide in 10 years, the unique appearance is worth the wait. The leaves emerge yellowgreen, overlapping one another like shingles on a roof. Medium green leaves in summer turn yellow-orange in fall. Excellent as a focal point in a small garden or in a container for continuous seasonal change. Acer palmatum 'Orangeola' 10 Year Size, Habit: 6-8’ H/W, Mounded Exposure: Full Sun, Part Shade Summer Foliage: Red/Purple Fall Foliage: Orange/Red 'Orangeola' has a dense, mounding habit with reddishorange new growth that turns dark green in mid-summer. The second flush is more orange and contrasts wonderfully with the older dark green foliage. Fall color, a bright orange red, is said to be one of the best. 'Orangeola' may have the best mounding habit of all the Japanese Laceleaf Maples. This variety has a mature height of 6-10' when grown in its preferred conditions of full sun and humus-rich, well-drained soil. Acer palmatum 'Purple Ghost' 'Purple Ghost' does not disappoint with its deep, almost black, purple and very veined and skeletal leaves. With slightly crumpled and saw-toothed edges, the ghoulish nature of this maple is perhaps one of the most evident in the Ghost series introductions from Buchholz Nursery. Fall color is fiery orange and scarlet. Should reach 8-10' tall and 4-6' wide in 10 years. 10 Year Size, Habit: 8-10’ H x 4-6’W, Upright Exposure: Full Sun, Part Shade Summer Foliage: Purple/Red Fall Foliage: Orange/Scarlet Acer palmatum 'Red Dragon' 'Red Dragon' is said to become the best-known red Laceleaf Maple in America. If our customer's interest is any indication, this plant has become the standard for red Laceleafs. Its prized, well-appreciated qualities are: dark purplemaroon foliage, with spectacular color retention in the summer; a vigorous growth rate; and a well-branched structure. Smaller and slower growing of the laceleafs. 10 Year Size, Habit: 10’ H x 12’W, Mounded Exposure: Full Sun, Part Shade Summer Foliage: Dark Red Fall Foliage: Scarlet Acer palmatum 'Seiryu' 'Seiryu' is set apart from others in the dissectum family because it grows upright and has the same texture as the Laceleaf Maple. The green dissected leaves give it a refined appearance. As with all Maples, fall brings spectacular color to the 'Seiryu'. The leaves beautifully display colors of strong gold, lighter yellow, and bold crimson. Vase-shaped, reaching 20' tall and 10-12' wide. 10 Year Size, Habit: 20’ H x 10-12’W, Vase Exposure: Full Sun, Part Shade Summer Foliage: Green Fall Foliage: Red/Orange Acer palmatum 'Shaina' 10 Year Size, Habit: 4-5’ H x 3-4’W, Upright Exposure: Full Sun, Part Shade Summer Foliage: Purple/Red Fall Foliage: Fiery Red 'Shaina' is a dwarf sport of 'Bloodgood,' thus sharing the same dark red coloring. However, 'Shaina's' leaves are shaped differently, with five deeply cut lobes and a rounder, shorter center lobe. The leaves and habit are compact, which makes this a wonderful plant for tight spaces where a strong splash of spring, summer, and fall color is desired. Our twenty-year-old scion plants are only six feet tall. It is important to note that this cultivar may not be quite as hardy as the species in general. Zone 5 - 8. Acer palmatum 'Shishigashira' 10 Year Size, Habit: 12’ H x 15’W, Rounded Exposure: Full Sun, Part Shade Summer Foliage: Green Fall Foliage: Gold/Red The interesting small crinkled leaves make 'Shishigashira' immediately recognizable and difficult to forget. It has distinctively upright branches that are covered densely with deep green leaves. Fall color is a radiant gold to orange, which is displayed late into the season, thus extending the life of a colorful landscape. Even into the winter, 'Shishigashira' is an eye-catcher, with an attractive skeletal structure and rich, green bark. Grows 6-12" per year maturing at 15-20' tall. Acer palmatum 'Sister Ghost' Nothing less than captivating! White, deeply divided leaves sport a distinct pale-green vein. Heavily serrated and ruffled. Jaw-dropper! 10 Year Size, Habit: 5’ H x 6-8’W, Spreading Exposure: Full Sun, Part Shade Summer Foliage: Yellow/Green Fall Foliage: Orange Red Acer palmatum 'Tamukeyama' 10 Year Size, Habit: 13’ H x 13’W, Mounded Exposure: Full Sun, Part Shade Summer Foliage: Purple Fall Foliage: Purple 'Tamukeyama' is a rediscovered Laceleaf Maple that was first available in Japan in 1710. Still very popular while new cultivars of red laceleafs are introduced. It is one of our best Laceleaf Maples and is earning great interest because it maintains its dark purple-red color even in hot, humid summers typical of northeastern United States. It is a vigorous grower with long cascading branches, covered with bold and coarsely dissected leaves. Like all Laceleaf Maples, mature size depends on staking and pruning. Acer palmatum 'Twombley's Red Sentinel' 10 Year Size, Habit: 8’ H x 3’W, Upright Exposure: Full Sun, Part Shade Summer Foliage: Burgundy Fall Foliage: Crimson A vigorous, red upright with a distinctive columnar growth habit that should reach 8' tall by 3' wide in 10 years. Its compact and narrow habit are ideal for slim spaces and mixed borders. Numerous deep purple-red leaves hold their color well during summer months. Bright crimson foliage in fall. In winter, the ascending branches darken, creating a wonderful sentinel in the garden. Acer palmatum 'Ukigumo' 10 Year Size, Habit: 8-10’ H x 6’W, Upright Exposure: Part Shade Summer Foliage: Pink & White on Green Fall Foliage: Gold/Orange The famous Floating Cloud Maple appears almost ghostly from a distance. In the first couple of years, 'Ukigumo' only shows green leaves, but by the third year a dazzling stippling of pink and white appear on the green backdrop. The intense pink spring foliage fades to green and white in the summer. Even so, the foliage is very showy because of the significant white speckles that adorn the leaves. In addition, it is a fairly compact grower that will not outgrow 8-10' tall in 10 years. Acer palmatum 'Uncle Ghost' Deeply cut scarlet foliage emerges; prominent light green veins appear as the red fades to shades of red & whitishgreen; needs dappled or afternoon shade for best colors; foliage turns shades of yellow to gold to crimson in fall; upright habit to 6' tall by 4' wide in 10 years. 10 Year Size, Habit: 6’ H x 4’W, Upright Exposure: Full Sun, Part Shade Summer Foliage: Deep Red Fall Foliage: Yellow/Crimson Acer palmatum 'Viridis' 10 Year Size, Habit: 10-12’ H/W, Mounded Exposure: Full Sun/Part Shade Summer Foliage: Green Fall Foliage: Orange/Red This plant is often under utilized in landscaping because it is a green variety rather than the popular red Laceleaf Maple. 'Viridis' is a very beautiful, weeping Maple that deserves more attention, especially in the fall, when its vibrant foliage glows golden-yellow and red. 'Viridis' has the advantage of being more shade tolerant than its red counterparts, as well. This variety also has exceptional branching architecture with attractive bark for winter interest. Depending on pruning, may reach a height and spread of 10-12'.
