The supersonic strategic bomber!
Designed to replace the aging B-52, the B-1A was built to serve as a
supersonic heavy bomber capable of delivering a nuclear payload. After
a lengthy development period, the project was scrapped in 1977 due to
rising costs and increased vulnerability to Soviet defense systems. A
fleet of upgraded B-52s, ICBMs and SLBMs were produced in the B-1A’s
place. However, the aircraft continued to serve as a test bed for the B-1B
throughout the Reagan administration. Kit features flight test-inspired
markings for the B-1A circa 1981.
