We are currently making
structural repairs to the West side of the building. As
soon as they are completed, the front of the building will
receive some much needed landscaping. Following that,
our next long term goal will be to turn our rehearsal hall
into a concert venue.
Dues payable by credit card: The system is now in
place for our local to accept membership and work dues
payments by credit card. This can easily be done by
calling the office and providing us with your credit card
details. There is a service charge per transaction. In the
future, dues will also be payable online.
Website: The ““new”” website, www.promusic325.com, is
now up and running. If you attempt to visit the old
website, you will be diverted to the new site. The site is
largely functional - if you notice anything ““missing”” or
have any suggestions, please send them to
[email protected].
We will work quickly to
improve the site so that it meets our members’’ needs.
Your ““old”” login username and password will remain
unchanged, with some exceptions –– those members have
been notified of their new logon and password
information.
CBA negotiations:
We are currently in negotiations
with La Jolla Playhouse, Old Globe, Starlight and
Orchestra Nova. All negotiations are heading in a positive
direction, despite the current economy, with the largest
gains being better working conditions and more liberal
subbing policies.
Potential new members and renters: Vintage Sugar
Entertainment has shown interest in renting office space
at Local 325 as well as in unionizing their players who
consist of mostly rock musicians. This is a great
opportunity for our Local to be able to represent another
genre of musicians who are too becoming tired of
““paying to play”” and who are looking to be affiliated with
Local 325 so that they can be backed up in their quest
for a living wage. I applaud them for their bravery and
hope that we can help them achieve their goal.
Next General Meeting: Please join us on MONDAY,
May 10th, at 7:30 pm for our next General Meeting.
One of the important issues to be voted on at the
meeting will be to change the General Meeting time to
Noon on designated Mondays to be announced in an
President’’s Message Continued on Page 3
President’’s Message Continued from Page 2
The following legislation will be acted upon
at the May 10, 2010 General Meeting:
attempt to increase participation at the General Meetings.
Your vote and input on this issue is critical as we try and
find ways to better accommodate our members.
Resolution 1.
Your comments, ideas and concerns are always welcome
and much appreciated. It is through your direct input
that we can best serve you, the members. Please feel
free to contact me at any time at (619) 306-5062 or via
email at [email protected].
The regular General Meetings of the Association shall be
held at 7:30 p.m. 12:00 p.m. on the second Monday of
February, May, August, and November. In the event of a
holiday, the meeting will be postponed to the following
Monday.
Stay tuned,

Life Members Corner
by Bob Mc Kewen
The 14th Annual Life Members Luncheon was held at our world headquarters on April
14th. If you didn’’t get there, you missed a delightful two hours of great music from Pete
De Luke and The Mellotones, excellent food from Andy Quartuccio’’s Cupid’’s Catering,
and an opportunity to see how much younger and more vibrant everybody looks. Then
we all went home to take a nap……
For as long as I can remember, every summer the circus came to town –– the Ringling
Brothers and Barnum and Bailey Circus would make a big production out of leading their elephants from their
circus train to the performance arena. Lane Field is about as far back as I go, then Westgate Park, and now
the Sports Arena. Due to the wonders of modern electronics, the circus has managed to dispense with live
music, thereby losing a significant amount of its appeal. It its heyday, the circus music was led by
remarkable man named Merle Evans. Merle was a consummate musician, director and cornetist, as well as a
gentleman of the ““old school.”” His title, confused by the public relations folks, was ““Toscanini of the Big
Top.”” He established a remarkable record –– more than 14,000 performances over a period of 36 years, and
he never missed a single show! Playing the circus was a challenge –– you never stop playing for more than a
few seconds and most of the music is up-tempo. Merle played a small pocket cornet with one hand and
conducted with the other. He had three embouchures –– one in the middle and two more on either side –– he
could switch if he got tired. Also, he could play everybody’’s part for every tune in the show from memory.
Merle Evans is gone now; he lived a long and fruitful life and deserved all the many accolades that came his
way. The nicest thing he said about San Diego had nothing to do with the weather, the beauty of the city, or
the friendliness of the people –– he said he loved coming here because the quality and professionalism of the
Local 325 musicians who played for him was as good as anywhere in the world! And, Merle had hired circus
bands everywhere! - Ad astra per aspera -

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Repairs or replacement of your essential equipment can be extremely expensive!
No matter how experienced or careful you are, your equipment can be lost or damaged by breakage, water, fire, vandalism, lightning
or more commonly - theft! You'd be out a great deal of money if your equipment was stolen, lost or damaged. And you can't rely on
your home owner's or renter's insurance to help you out. When your equipment is part of your business, it probably won't be covered
by homeowner's or renter's insurance on or off premises.
"Special Risk" Protection
The AFM "Special Risk" Musical Instrument Equipment Insurance Program is just the type of protection you can count on . . . it
covers everything you own from your sheet music stands to amplifiers - right down to your instrument case. And you're covered no
matter where you go . . . up to the scheduled value of your equipment. The best part: This "Special Risk" Program is available to
you at a very reasonable cost. Don?t leave your expensive investment to chance...protect it with the AFM "Special Risk" Musical
Instrument Equipment Insurance Program.
Annual Premium Per $100 of Replacement Value
Your first $1,500 of equipment: $2.20 per $100 value
Over $1,500 of equipment: $1.00 per $100 value
NOTE: Minimum premium is $75. Total values in excess of $100,000 must be submitted for individual analysis, and acceptance
may be subject to additional information. There is no limit to the amount you can apply for. Coverage will become effective for
$100,000 or more upon approval by the underwriting company. Program is subject to a deductible of $100 for each loss.
