LeMars' History
The history of Le Mars dates back as
early as the 1850s when settlers arrived to
the region now known as Plymouth County.
The county of Plymouth was organized in
1853 and started with two townships.
In 1869, Le Mars was platted but no
lots were offered for sale until June of 1870
when railroad builder John I. Blair arrived by
special train with a company of officials and
a group of ladies. When the train stopped
the ladies were asked to suggest a name for
the town, then known as St. Paul Junction.
It is believed that the ladies wrote the first
initials of their first names and arrived at an
ingenious arrangement of them so as to
produce the novel name "Le Mars." Within
two decades the tiny town would grow to a
city of 4,000 residents.

1.
Did you know?
The settlement of Le Mars came about because of the railroad in 1869, although there were settlers in the area as early
as the 1850's. Le Mars was initially named St. Paul Junction, as
it was the junction of the railroad headed to St. Paul, MN. It was
also known as Gateway to the west.
2.
The first Portland Cement street in Iowa (the second in the
nation) was poured in 1904, paid for by the store-owners on 1st
Ave SW. It consisted of two layers, mixed by hand, brought in
by horses, hand tapped. It was grooved or scored in 4" squares
so horses wouldn't slip on such new-fangled stuff. In 1964 a
celebration was held in honor of that cement, with a marker
placed on the adjacent sidewalk. Now covered with asphalt,
you can still make out the large 6' diagonals poured.
3.
Le Mars boasts 4 houses and one downtown building completely built of the Miracle Block produced by the M. A. Moore
and Co. at the turn of the last century. The cement block consisted of staggered air spaces, which provided excellent insulation for heating/cooling. Inside, plaster could be applied directly
to the block, saving lathing or furring. Many foundations of other
houses are also built using the famed Miracle Block.
LeMars is...
Situated in the northwest corner of Iowa, Le Mars is 25 miles north
of Sioux City, 85 miles southeast of Sioux Falls, 120 miles north of
Omaha and 205 miles northwest of Des Moines. U.S. Highway 75
along with state highways 3 and 60 offer an excellent transportation
network to nearby interstates as well as venues such as the Iowa
Great Lakes area.
4.
In the 1880's several thousand Englishmen emigrated to
Plymouth County. Brought in by the Close Bros., the British settlers started the first YMCA, built the historic St.George's church
and started the first telephone exchange. They founded an all
British social group called the Gentleman's Club; finally, around
1900, they did allow non-Brits to join.
5.
Because Le Mars was a Gateway, many people passed
through here. As many as 8 tracks went through town with several
trains a day (14 in 1903). Several depots existed for the various
railroad lines. Some of these are depicted on the railroad mural
along the tracks between Central Ave. SE and Plymouth St. SW.
Check them out!
6.
Cleveland Park was the site of many Chautauquas and other
dramatic and musical events. A permanent platform for the huge
tent, as well as private hideaways for campers (trees were planted
to provide privacy) were on the east end, while a large reflecting
pool enhanced the SW corner. Attendees sometimes spent the
entire week in the park, with different lectures and entertainment
every day.
