Our events and programs are always a lot of fun for
all, but they take a great number of volunteers to
create the first class experiences we all are so proud
of each year! Committees are also a great way to
volunteer. We have committees working on various
business areas such as Hospitality, Marketing, and
Advocacy to name a few. The commitment is minimal but the reward is big!
We hope you participate as a volunteer, as so many
in our Chamber do. If for some reason you have not
taken the opportunity to participate in the many
opportunities available through our Chamber, we

It’s Time to Start Thinking About 2016 Tax

Although the dreaded “tax season” is over there are things you should know about your return to reduce your tax in the coming
year. Here is a list of suggested items to review:
Capital Loss Carryforwards - Capital losses are limited to offset other capital gains, any capital losses in excess of gains can be
used up to $3,000 annually to offset other income. Any losses over $3,000 carry forward to future years. You may want to take a
look at Schedule D of your tax return to determine if you have capital loss carryforwards. If you do, you can realize capital gains
in the coming year up to the loss and pay no tax.
Suspended Passive Loss Carryforwards - There are many limitations on the utilization of passive activity
and rental property losses. If you have been subject to loss limitations, this presents opportunities for planning in the future. Form 8582 reports the amount of any suspended passive losses that are carried forward
to future years. These losses can be used on the “disposition” of property or to offset future passive income.
The “character” of the losses will be treated as an ordinary deduction when used in a future year. If you are
planning on selling an investment property in 2016 it would be wise to determine if the sale will “free up”
any suspended passive losses.
Taking a little time now to know and understand your tax return can help reduce your taxes in future years.

Affect Exit Strategy
Owners must be cognizant of how critical professional advice regarding their future business exit/transition, is. According to U.S. Census Bureau statistics, there are 30 million U.S. businesses today. The majority are small- to mid-sized enterprises, with potential values ranging from the thousands of dollars
up to several million dollars. The big unknown – who might be the optimal buyer(s) of your business?

Size Matters
To put this data into even greater perspective, owners of smaller businesses are generally going to have a harder
time with their exit. Small businesses are often far more dependent upon the individual efforts of the owner(s).
As a result, many of these owners are actually not selling an enterprise; rather, they are selling a “job”. It is vital
that owners understand the difference and are aware of what, if anything, they can do ti increase the odds of
finding a potential buyer.
Timing and The Economy Matters
So far in 2015, despite the recent volatility in the world/U.S stock markets, we are seeing an improved economy
and a willingness of buyers to acquire businesses. These factors have a huge impact on a business exit; it wasn’t
too long ago when we faced a global financial crisis and a depressed economy, creating reduced buyer demand
for businesses.
Since markets run in cycles, it is not a question as to whether there will be another softening in the M&A arena
(or worse, another recession) but, rather, when it will occur. Since recessions typically last for several years (on
average), owners need to consider their age and how much longer they want to operate their business, especially
if they have yet not started planning their exit strategy.
With the oldest Baby Boomers approaching their 70’s, the next economic slow-down could result in many of
them getting “trapped” in their businesses. When the economy does eventually recover, many Baby Boomers
will be quite anxious to get out of their businesses, resulting in a glut of businesses “chasing” potential buyers or
successors. Only the best businesses will be offered the best valuations.
Protect Your Wealth, Start Planning Today
Owners should begin exit strategy planning today, in order to protect and extract the wealth that is trapped in
their illiquid business. Furthermore, a business-oriented exit advisor can also help you bolster your business
results and enhance exit value. Without a well-thought-out exit strategy, the odds of achieving one’s exit goals
can become insurmountable.

Earlier this year, Palm Desert High School received a very special notification from the College Board. The email
stated, in part: “Congratulations! It is our pleasure to offer Palm Desert High School the opportunity to implement
the AP Capstone™ program in the 2016-2017 school year!”
The AP Capstone is a program developed by the College Board, private nonprofit corporation. Most people are
aware of the SAT, better known as the “College Boards”. In fact, College Board also provides resources, tools, and
services to students, parents, colleges, and universities in the areas of college planning, recruitment, admissions,
financial aid, and retention and is funded with grants from various organizations including the Gates Foundation.
AP Capstone is an innovative diploma program that provides students with an opportunity to engage in rigorous
scholarly practice of the core academic skills necessary for successful college completion. It is an outgrowth of the
AP (advanced placement) classes offered at most high schools but goes beyond the rigors of these courses. The
program relies on two fundamental courses— Seminar and Research. The concept is to complement the in-depth,
discipline-specific study provided in advance placement classes to cultivate a curious, independent, and collaborative life-long learner by engaging students in real-world issues, contemplated from multiple points of views. Combined with a year-long 5,000 research project, the program, along with the required AP classes and exams results
in college placement at some of the most renowned universities in the nation and placement in classes above the
freshmen level.
Staff at Palm Desert High School are currently preparing for August 2016 when the program begins for the Aztecs.
