What is
Operation Identification?
Operation Identification is a citizen’s burglary
prevention program for homes and businesses.
The Operation I.D. Program involves marking
property with an identifying number as a
means of discouraging burglary and theft.
In communities where it has been properly
implemented, Operation Identification has
shown dramatic results in the ability to reduce
burglaries.
The Operation I.D. program has 3 parts:
• Mark your valuables with your Florida
Driver License or Identification Number.
• Record the item, the serial #, and the
location where the number is engraved.
Prepare a list of all items and numbers. Keep
the numbers in a secure place, such as a
safety deposit box.
• Display the Operation I.D. sticker. This
indicates that your property has been
marked.
What Makes Operation I.D.
so Effective?
Engraved property is difficult for a burglar to
sell. If properly marked, it can be traced to
the rightful owner. If a person is caught with
marked property, it can be used as evidence of
the possession of stolen goods.
Suggested Items To Mark
The items listed below are stolen most
frequently from homes and businesses.
How To Participate?
Your Florida Driver License or Identification
Number should be used as your identifying
mark on the valuables that you engrave.
Never use your social security number as your
identifying mark.
A typical marking should look like the one below.

The Florida Driver License or Identification
number should be engraved on an area that
cannot be easily seen.
Possessions that are too small or too valuable to
engrave should be photographed or videotaped
next to a ruler to convey an accurate impression
of its size.
After marking, photographing, or videotaping
your property, make a list of your valuables. Keep
a copy of the list in a safe place. If you should
become a victim, you will be able to describe the
stolen property to the police from the list. This
information will help law enforcement recover the
stolen items.
Once you have marked your property and made
a list, display an Operation Identification sticker
on a door or window that will most likely be used
for entry.
Do not display an Operation I.D. sticker without
first engraving your property.
