2ND ANNUAL PEDAL FOR THE HOUSE
The Des Moines Ronald McDonald House
hosted the 2nd Annual Pedal for the House
on Sunday, September 8, 2013 on the High
Trestle Trail. Only in its second year, Pedal
for the House has enjoyed amazing success
thanks to our generous sponsors, donors, and
participants. This year’s event surpassed all
expectations. We increased our participation
by 163% and raised $10,000 more than the first
year.
For a dozen years, we had hosted the Run for
Ronald, a 5k/10k run/walk that started facing
increased competition from numerous other
runs & walks in the area. So in 2012, we decided
to change things and host a bike ride instead,
capitalizing on a thriving cyclist community
in Des Moines and the popularity of the High
Trestle Trail, specifically the High Trestle Bridge.
The event begins and ends at the Flat Tire
Lounge in Madrid, IA. The route includes stops
at the Nite Hawk in Slater and The Whistlin’
Donkey in Woodward. Pedal for the House is a
ride, not a race. Riders can go as fast or slow as
they’d like. Since, the start is in the middle of
the route, riders can customize their own route,
choosing how far they pedal from a few miles
to twenty five miles.
Thank you to the band Too Cool for their
performance and to Sharon Weise for
photographing the event. We thank the Flat Tire
Lounge, Nite Hawk Bar & Grill, and The Whistlin’
Donkey for their sponsorship and participation
this year. We also thank our biggest event
sponsor, Kemin Industries, for their continued
support over the years. Please join us on the
High Trestle Trail for the 3rd Annual Pedal for
the House on Sunday, September 7, 2014.
Thank you to our sponsors:

The Lahr Family’s Story
Last fall, life was busy as usual at the Lahr house. We have
four boys (9, twins 7, and a 2yr. old) who are very active and
busy and live in Lake View, Iowa.
Our life changed very quickly and we had no idea how hectic
life can get in a matter of days. Our youngest, Emmett, woke
up one night crying that it hurt to go potty. The following
morning, we went to the doctor. He told us he had a bladder
infection and it probably was caused by him recently getting
potty trained and holding it too long. Over the next couple
days, Emmett did not get better and eventually ended up in
the hospital with what appeared to be more of a constipation
issue. After days of not getting better, more tests were done
and revealed an enormous mass in his bladder. After a 5 hour
surgery, doctors were not able to remove it all and a frozen
section confirmed the mass was Rhabdomyosarcoma. He healed very quickly and immediately
started chemo the week after Thanksgiving. We chose a study option for treatment and it consists of
weekly chemo treatments for 48 weeks, 6 weeks of radiation, and scans every 15 weeks.
We were fortunate to be sent to the Ronald McDonald House during this process and it truly has
become our second home. Living a couple hours away from the hospital, it is so convenient to
stay right across the street. We could not go through this without the RMH. The staff, volunteers,
and comfort of home are truly amazing. They make this unexplained experience possible to go
through. We truly believe our positive attitudes are our best medicine along with our HUGE support
system. We try to live as much of a normal
life as possible and the RMH allows that. The
RMH has become a big part of our life and
someplace we will continue to use for some
time. Emmett has spent every holiday away
from home except Easter since last October.
Emmett’s three older brothers were able to
come to RMH for Christmas break and also
were made part of their family. A visit from
Santa at the House was the highlight for the
kids as Scott and myself had much more on
our minds than worrying about shopping. It
is a Christmas the whole family will never
forget. Emmett’s outlook is good and the
mass is shrinking. He is a normal kid that has adapted well to his routine. We are getting close to the
end, but still take one day at a time. You never think you will ever be in this situation and we have
learned with all we are going through, there is always another family worse off than us. We pray
this unplanned chapter in our book will have a good ending and hope to show others that a kid with
cancer is manageable with help from others!
We know cancer messed with the wrong kid!!

MAKE A RESOLUTION TO HELP OTHERS IN 2014
Become a part of the Ronald McDonald House family and help provide critically ill children and their
families with a good night’s sleep, home cooked meals and access to life saving treatment.
THE GIVING TREE
From November 27th to December 15th, McDonald’s restaurants in central
Iowa will host the 4th Annual Giving Tree. Every tree will have ornaments with
wish list items needed for the House. Customers can take an ornament and return
the wish list item back to the restaurant. All items will be delivered to the House for the
holiday season. Thank you to the McDonald’s Mid-Iowa Co-op for hosting the Giving Tree
again this year. The items we have collected in previous years have filled our shelves for
months making a big impact on the families staying at the Ronald McDonald House.
DILLARD’S
Dillard’s in West Des Moines will be selling the 2013 Southern
Living Christmas Cookbook and all proceeds will be donated
to Ronald McDonald House Charities. Your purchase directly
supports the Des Moines Ronald McDonald House. Since 1994,
Dillard’s has been supporting Ronald McDonald House Charities
and have raised more than $10.4 million for RMHC!
HELP FULFILL THE HOUSE WISH LIST
You can help keep our House stocked with the basic necessities a home requires. When you’re
picking up what you need for your home, grab a few things for our House too, such as single
serve snacks, gift cards to stores and gas stations, laundry detergent, or juice boxes. Access our
full wish list on our website.
SPONSOR A ROOM TODAY!
In an effort to help with the increasing need at the Des Moines Ronald McDonald House you can
help by sponsoring a room. This program allows individuals, groups or companies to sponsor a
room for just $5,000 per year. This money allows us to maintain and upgrade the rooms as well as
just knowing that you are helping to provide a more comfortable stay for our families.
Annual Sponsor a Room benefits are:
• The satisfaction of helping families stay together during their time of need
• Plaque in the room with your name for the year
• Thank you letters sent to you directly from our families
• Your name listed in our newsletter publication and website

ORGANIZE AN OUTSIDE FUNDRAISER
Corporations, schools, civic groups, churches, families or individuals can organize a fundraiser.
From golf outings to lemonade stands, every outside fundraiser helps provide families with the
financial and emotional support to help their children receive the best medical care.
BE A RELIEF MANAGER VOLUNTEER
DONATE YOUR VEHICLE
Volunteer for two 4 hour shifts per month
either at the Ronald McDonald House or
the Ronald McDonald Family Room to help
provide our families with a comfortable stay.
Consider volunteering in the evening or
weekend when our need is the greatest. Relief
Managers assist families, answer phones,
clean guest rooms, stock supplies, provide
administrative assistance and perform other
general office duties.
If you think that old car in your driveway
isn’t worth much, we would like to turn that
thinking around. By donating your car, truck,
boat or RV to RMHC, you can help provide
families a home-away-from-home at the Des
Moines Ronald McDonald House and keep
them together during the hospitalization of
a seriously ill child. Donated vehicles do not
need to be in good condition and don’t even
need to work. And on top of that, you can claim
a tax deduction for your charitable donation.
We’ll even come pick up your vehicle at no
charge and handle all the
paperwork.
CREATE OR UPDATE YOUR WILL
Give the gift of knowing you are protecting
your family, friends and the causes you care
about most. Consider Ronald McDonald House
Charities of Central Iowa, Inc. in your will.
Helping others in their greatest time of need
would be a legacy you leave behind.

CROPS FOR KIDS
Many of our families are from our rural
communities and often as they leave they want
to give back in some form for the services they
received while staying at the Ronald McDonald
House. Many of them wish they lived closer so
they could help prepare meals or even come
in for a day of cleaning or yard work.
makes it difficult to do so? Talk to your local

One thing I know from
working at the House over
the past 14 years is that
time moves differently here.
Our families are faced with
the “hurry up and wait” for
their small preemies to grow
strong enough to go home.
Or in other cases, decisions
of a child’s treatment must be
made very quickly and there
usually isn’t enough time to debate all the options or
consequences. After a while parents lose track if its
day or night as they sit vigil at their child’s bedside and
mom and dad take turns going back to the House to
shower, grab a nap or just enjoy a homemade hot meal
by one of our many wonderful meal providers.
As an organization we are committed to keeping hope in
the equation throughout a guests stay. Staff, volunteers
and board members find themselves simply sitting and
listening with an open heart as a family shares their
fears and concerns of what they will face the next day.
It is through you, our donors, volunteers and supporters
that this compassionate care is possible. Each dollar
donated, each hour volunteered, each word spread
enables the House to fulfill its mission and purpose and
house families in need.
With the changing of the seasons, the holidays upon us
and 2013 coming quickly to a close, it’s usually around
this time that we take a moment to contemplate what life
has given us and what we have done to give back. Let’s
vow to continue to work hard to feed more residents,
ensure that the last thing a family has to worry about
is whether they can afford to stay with their sick child,
and log ever more volunteer hours.
Thank you for helping us serve as a home away from
home for families. This is an organization to be proud
of and we are dedicated to what is most important:
each and every family that passes through our doors.
Thanks for all that you do.
2013 FORD TRANSIT VAN
The Ronald McDonald House now has a new vehicle to help
with the day to day operations of the House. This vehicle
is made possible through the generosity of the following:
Charles Gabus Ford, we were one of the four charities to
receive a contribution through their annual July Sales
Event; WeatherTech for the contribution of DigitalFit® Floor
Liners; Knapheid for their contribution of a bulkhead, Truck
Equipment, Inc. providing the labor to install the bulkhead
and to Parker Signs for the graphics.
Clint started volunteering as a weekend Relief Manager in
the spring of 2011. When the Ronald McDonald Family
Room opened, staff member Deb Mohr, who was working
the weekends Florence had off, started working at the Family
Room full time. Clint stepped up to work those weekend
shifts. Since November 2011, he has volunteered his time
in 48 hour shifts during two and sometimes three weekends
every month. Often, Clint brings his wife, Kelly, and their
three young children with him as well. Kelly helps out
around the House while their children make new friends with
some of the other kids who might be here. Recently, Clint
has increased his volunteer time, staying over until Monday
morning, giving Florence a very rare Sunday night off. The
staff is so incredibly grateful for everything he has done to
help the Ronald McDonald House
during the past two years. It was
our great pleasure to award the
2013 Volunteer of the Year to the
well deserving Clint Mongan.
