HIGHLIGHTS OF IRELAND & BRITAIN - OUTLINE ITINERARY Day 1: London Arrival & Orientation Your vacation starts at your London hotel at 2:00 pm when you meet your tour director. Head out on a panoramic drive around central London to see many of the famous landmarks including Piccadilly Circus, Trafalgar Square, Big Ben and the Houses of Parliament, St. Paul’s Cathedral and the Tower of London. In the evening meet your group for a welcome drink to discuss your trip. Then enjoy dinner in your hotel. (D) Day 2: Cambridge & York Walking Tour Drive to Cambridge and walk past some of the famous university colleges, including King’s College and the Mathematical Bridge over the River Cam. Head north by motorway to the ancient city of York for a walking tour to appreciate narrow streets, especially the Shambles, where the medieval houses almost touch from one side of the street to the other. Tour the stately Gothic York Minster, which dates back to the 12th century and is noted for its magnificent medieval stained glass windows and the many memorials to prominent people. Drive a short distance to your hotel in Harrogate and relax before dinner. (B,D) Day 3: Abbotsford House & Edinburgh Travel north through the Northumberland National Park into Scotland to Melrose to visit Abbotsford House, Sir Walter Scott’s home. The house contains an impressive collection of historic relics, weapons and armor and an extensive library containing over 9,000 rare volumes. Continue your drive north through the Scottish Borders to your hotel on the outskirts of Edinburgh and savor local foods and musical entertainment at a Scottish Evening right in your hotel. (B,D) Day 4: Edinburgh Castle & City Tour Join a local guide on a drive around central Edinburgh to see the main points of interest, including the 200-year-old “New Town” with its planned streets, elegant Georgian houses and the Palace of Holyroodhouse, the official Scottish residence of The Queen. Walk along part of the Royal Mile where medieval houses are clustered closely together with some rising to heights of 11 floors. Tour the massive Edinburgh Castle to see the Crown Jewels of Scotland and the Stone of Destiny and enjoy great city views. The afternoon is free for independent activities. Watch the spectacular Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo at Edinburgh Castle. (B) Day 5: Titanic Belfast & Dublin Depart Edinburgh early this morning and drive south through Ayrshire and along the coast. Arrive in the port of Cairnryan in good time to take a ferry ride to Belfast. In the docks visit Titanic Belfast, an attraction that explains every aspect of the ill-fated liner through state-of-the-art displays. Belfast was famous for its huge docks and extensive shipbuilding industry and was where RMS Titanic was built in 1912. Drive south to Dublin and check in to your city-center hotel. The evening is at leisure for independent dining and your tour director will assist in recommending restaurants. (B) Day 6: Dublin & Merry Ploughboy Pub Tour central Dublin to see historic buildings such as Trinity College, where the Book of Kells is housed; the evocative figures of the Famine Memorial; and rows of Georgian houses with gaily-painted doorways. Visit the Guinness Storehouse to learn about the famous brew and the many stages of production. Head to the rooftop bar for a creamy pint of Guinness and enjoy views of central Dublin all around. The afternoon is at leisure so that you may explore the city on your own. In the evening drive to the Merry Ploughboy Pub for a dinner of Irish specialties and a lively show of Irish songs and step-dancing. (B,D) Day 7: Russborough House & Waterford Crystal This morning drive through the delightful scenery of the Wicklow Mountains to Blessington for a guided tour of stately Russborough House, a Palladian mansion filled with interesting treasures as well as noted works of art and early photographic collections. Continue your journey south to Jerpoint Park Farm for lunch and a chat with the owners. See one of Ireland’s best examples of a deserted 12th century town and watch trained dogs herd sheep. Visit the House of Waterford Crystal to learn about glass blowing and cutting and see one-of-a-kind masterpieces. Check in to your hotel and, after dinner, take a walking tour around historic Waterford with a local guide. (B,L,D) Day 8: Ferry to South Wales & Cardiff Dinner Show Depart Waterford early this morning to catch the ferry from Rosslare to South Wales, a region where the coal industry dominated until the 1950’s. Drive to Cardiff, capital city of Wales and tour Cardiff Castle, developed in Roman times and transformed into an elaborate Gothic style residence in the 19th century. Dine at a Welsh evening on local specialties and sit back afterwards for some fine entertainment. (B,D) Day 9: Roman Baths & Stonehenge This morning take a panoramic tour around central Cardiff before heading east to explore Bath, popular for its natural hot springs with the Romans 2,000 years ago and again in fashion during the 18th century Regency period. Tour the Roman Baths and Pump Room, wonderfully preserved after two millennia and renowned for the mineral-rich hot springs. Drive to Salisbury Plain to view the prehistoric circle of vast monoliths at Stonehenge. Continue to London and check in to your hotel. (B) Day 10: Extend your Stay in London Schedule your London sightseeing when you take an open-top bus tour around the many famous landmarks. There are a number of different bus routes as well as a walking tour and a cruise on the River Thames. Visit either the Tower of London to view the magnificent Crown Jewels or Kensington Palace, home of Princess Diana. (B) Day 11: Tour Ends in London Your program ends after breakfast.
