Tagesablauf
Arrival: Saturday
In Strasbourg the "BW Hotel Monopole Métropole" awaits you right in the city center, close to the railroad
station. We will meet in the hotel lobby at 5 p.m. for a sightseeing tour, including a stroll through the narrow
streets of La Petite France and a visit of one of the most beautiful gothic cathedrals. Sightseeing tour and
accommodation from Saturday to Sunday(including breakfast) are included in the tour price.
1st Day Sunday: Straßburg – Ottrott-le-Haut (26 miles)
Strasbourg is known as the most bicycle-friendly of all French cities which permits us to leave town on a
nearly traffic-free route. We’ll ride along romantic isolated paths, along ponds and rivers to the Dompeter,
the oldest house of worship in the Alsace. Then through isolated vineyards to Rosheim and Obernai, with
its splendid Renaissance fountain and perhaps the loveliest medieval square in the region. Everchanging
views of the nearby Vosges provide the backdrop into medieval Ottrott-le-Haut. We’ll be spoiled by the
excellent and well-known cuisine of the hotel "A L’Ami Fritz." Patrick Fritz, the chef, and his wife run the
comfortable hotel and restaurant. (2 nights)
2nd Day Monday: Ottrott-le-Haut (6 miles hiking)
Today, we leave our bikes behind and hike along a romantic route from Ottrott to the convent of Mont
Sainte-Odile, marvelously situated on top of a mountain ridge above the vineyards. Founded in the 8th
century, only parts of today’s abbey date back to the medieval construction, the working sphere of Sainte
Odile. On a clear day one can see far beyond Strasbourg to the northern part of the Black Forest. In the
early afternoon we walk back to Ottrott, passing along the Pagan Wall, "le mur païen", very likely dating
back to the Celtic Age. You will have time to relax at the swimming pool (in the summer) or during a stroll
through the beautiful village. Second night in the hotel „A L’Ami Fritz“.
3rd Day Tuesday: Ottrott-le-Haut – Riquewihr (26 miles)
Our cycling route takes us southwards along the foot of the Vosges. Along the way is Andlau with its abbey
church, Kintzheim, where you can sample excellent "Tarte Flambée", as well as charming Bergheim. Our
path leads us over partly flat and partly gently rolling terrain, through broad vineyards and quaint wine
villages. Today’s destination, Riquewihr, is considered the "Pearl of the Vineyards." After reaching our Hotel
"Le Riquewihr", nestled amongst the vines (swimming pool), we will enjoy a walk around the wonderfully
preserved medieval village and have dinner in a restaurant with exquisite regional cuisine.
4th Day Wednesday: Riquewihr – Rouffach (25 miles)
After a short ride, we’ll reach Kaysersberg, the idyllic birthplace of Albert Schweitzer, along the Weiss river.
Throughout the morning we’ll visit the loveliest wine villages around Colmar, capital of Alsatian
wine-production. Ammerschwihr, Katzenthal and Turckheim will delight you with their varied Alsatian style
houses. On the way to Rouffach, a short detour takes us to the painterly circular vineyard village of
Eguisheim. Our host tonight is the majestic residence “Le Chateau d?½Isenbourg”, spectacularly
overlooking the town center and well-known for its excellent cuisine, tranquil spa with swimming pool and
the pretty gardens with open air pool. (2 nights)
5th Day Thursday: Rouffach – Colmar – Rouffach (28 miles)
On our bikes we reach Colmar, which has impressively retained its late-medieval character. Few can resist
the charm of the half-timbered houses, cobble-stone streets and splendid renaissance show-pieces. We’ll
visit the loveliest sights: the Tanner’s Quarter, Little Venice, the Pfister House, Koifhus, Arcade House,
House of the Violin as well as the old Guard House. The Dominican Church exhibits the Martin Schongauer
masterpiece, "Madonna in a Rose Bower." A highlight of our tour is a visit to the Unterlinden Museum and
the world-famous "Isenheim Altar" by Matthias Grünewald. In the afternoon we cycle leisurely along the
vineyards back to Rouffach. You have enough time to explore the beautiful wine-grower-town or to relax
once again before dinner at the hotel “Le Chateau d?½Isenbourg”.
6th Day Friday: Rouffach – Basel (46 miles)
Slowly we leave the Alsatian vineyards and cycle on pretty roads to the “Ecomusée d’Alsace”, probably the
most impressive open-air museum in France. We visit an authentic Alsatian village of half-timbered houses
– dismantled and rebuilt -, representing various regions and epochs. It reveals an insight into the
architecture and the rural way of life of the 18th century. Afterwards, our bikes take us through huge forest
areas towards the Rhine river. Cycling along the romantic Canal d?½Huningue, we arrive in Basel, known
as a pearl of art and culture in Switzerland. We will spend our last night at the stylish “Hotel Victoria” and
celebrate our farewell dinner in the noble hotel restaurant.
7th Day Saturday: Basel
On a guided tour through the old town overlooking the Rhine, we discover the nearly two thousand years of
history of this little pulsating metropolis. Its wealth was based on the textile dyeing mill “Geigy”, founded in
1795. This company, as well as others, have highly contributed to the rise of the city and its becoming of a
center of fine arts. After a visit of the medieval town, our journey ends at noon at the hotel. From the station
nearby, you easily reach Strasbourg. Shuttle busses take you in about 20 minutes to the EuroAirport Basel.
