was to set up a onestop centre that provides
comprehensive aesthetics treatments. We
have noninvasive procedures from botox to
lasers and various cosmetic surgery procedures.
The treatment we provide covers the patient
from head to toe,” explains Dr. M. Nasir Zahari,
Medical Director at the Centre, about the
concept. “We have a healthy aging centre
where we impart knowledge and tips on how
to maximise the benefits of healing and aging
gracefully with therapies, diet and exercise. We

Beverly Wilshire Dental Specialist Centre
Dato’ Dr. How Kim Chuan, who is the immediate past president of the Malaysian Dental
Association, heads the Beverly Wilshire Dental Specialists Centre. According to Dr. How,
dentistry has a lot more to offer than drilling, extracting, cleaning and filling up decayed teeth.
He reconstructs bad teeth, leaving his patients with brilliant smiles. Many patients who
go to him are afraid to part their lips when they smile because they have bad teeth. After he
reconstructs their teeth they leave with a bright, sunny and confident smile.
Dr. How believes in investing in the best technology so that he can get the best job done
with ease and convenience. The Dental Specialists Centre is equipped with a revolutionary
digital system that captures threedimensional images of the mouth, face and jaw – an
asset when planning patient’s new smiles. It is also low in radiation for patient safety.
Additionally, the Centre has waterbased bloodless gum shaping technology as well as the
latest sinus lifting kit. These are just some of the cuttingedge technologies Dr. How and his
team have at their disposal.
Apart from purely dental considerations, Dr. How works with the rest of the aesthetics
team at Beverly Wilshire to provide a more comprehensive approach to medical beauty.
“We have successfully treated many challenging cases and turned them into very
aesthetically pleasing profiles,” Dr. How says. “We wanted to build something that’s very
unique. That’s why we combine the resources of both the medical and dental specialists to
plan and design the face and smile of clients. Here, we work together with the plastic
surgeons and aesthetic practitioners to give clients a comprehensive solution to beauty.”

Pushing Beyond
the Boundaries
Consultant Plastic, Reconstructive and
Cosmetic Surgeon, Dr. M. Nasir Zahari, takes
pride in his work and enjoys the challenges
that come with it. “I do not like to be stag
nant. I prefer to be the pioneer in everything
I do,” he states.
Prior to establishing Beverly Wilshire
Medical Centre and becoming its Medical
Director, Dr. Nasir had set up burns units at
Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia Medical
Centre (HUKM) and Prince Court Medical
Centre, where he received a service excellence
award. “As a Reconstructive Surgeon, I treat
many burns patients. This subspecialty gives
me a sense of satisfaction as it gives patients
a second chance in life.”
But Dr. Nasir enjoys doing face lifts the
most. “People view their faces differently
from their bodies. The face is exposed for
others to see, while their bodies are hidden
underneath clothing. Hence, if we improve
the face, we improve the patient’s confidence.”
Reminiscing about his past, Dr. Nasir
recalls that his fascination with plastic surgery
began during his tenure as a general surgeon.
“Cosmetic surgery is where science
combines with art. Science is where we learn
about the anatomy and the physiological
changes in the body that result in sagging
skin and breasts. The art comes in the
enhancements that we make,” he explains.
Driven To Meet Customer’s
Beauty Expectations

“Of course, everyone sees things differently
and subjectivity usually defies science. The
challenge for me is seeing different patients
and learning about and developing ways to
meet their expectations. Perhaps the adrenaline
Before
rush is what keeps me going.”
Dr. Nasir notes that the aesthetics industry
has grown tremendously over the years with
more people accepting the idea of enhancing
their beauty.
“Malaysia’s growing plastic surgery industry
is reflective of the fact that we have great
technology, facilities and expertise that is on
par with our neighbours. Our surgeons have
ample experience and train overseas with
reputable surgeons.”
Advanced One-of-a-kind
Treatments
At Beverly Wilshire Medical Centre, Dr.
Nasir has also introduced modern hair
transplantation technology, Suction Assisted
Follicular Extraction and Reimplantation
(S.A.F.E.R.). “There is a huge market for hair
transplantation. About one in five people in
their 20s experience hair thinning and the
number goes up as they age. Unfortunately,
there are very few centres that provide these
services. This new treatment will benefit both
men and women alike.”
The S.A.F.E.R. procedure easily takes half
the amount of time of traditional methods of
hair transplantation. It does not require any
cutting or stitching as a probe is used to
extract the hair follicle and implant it accurately
into the scalp. Furthermore, there is less
trauma and damage involved, which ensures
better survival of the hair follicle and
quality of the plant. The success rate of hair
transplantation using this method is about 95
percent – as compared to traditional methods
that see 75 percent success rates.
Besides this, Beverly Wilshire Medical
Centre is one of the few centres to offer

“Giving my best to my patients and
meeting their expectations, giving them
satisfaction, gives me tremendous
encouragement in my work,” says Dr. M.

a double chin.
CoolLipo – laser lipolysis. Dr. Nasir prefers
laser instead of other methods as it offers
targeted destruction of fat cells.
“It breaks down the fat without affecting
the surrounding connective tissues. As other
tissue is not affected, it produces minimal
trauma and pain as well as bleeding which
ensures better and faster recovery. The laser
also works as a tool to tighten the skin as the
heat stimulates collagen growth and gives a
smooth retraction to the skin. It works
extremely well on double chins, arms, love
handles and outer thighs. It also works post
pregnancy for ladies with excess loose skin.”
Although he has faced many challenges
along the way, Dr. Nasir’s love for cosmetic
surgery has never wavered and it continues
to grow. “Giving my best to my patients and
meeting their expectations, giving them
satisfaction, gives me tremendous
encouragement in my work.”

The Hands of
Experience
With 30 years experience under his belt Dato’
Dr. A. Jalil Bin Jidon, Consultant Plastic and
Reconstructive Surgeon, makes his move to the
Beverly Wilshire Medical Centre.
Consultant Plastic and Reconstructive
Surgeon, Dato’ Dr. A. Jalil Bin Jidon, has
been practising medicine for 30 years,
25 of it as a plastic surgeon. This is a
watershed year for the Ferrari and rock
music loving (“I have 5000 heavy metal
songs on my iPod”) surgeon. After 13 years
in government service followed by 17
years in a hospital in Ampang, Dr. Jalil will
be moving to the allnew Beverly Wilshire
Medical Centre, a centre that will see him
almost entirely in an aesthetics practice
for the first time.
What many people don’t know is that
during his housemanship all those years
ago, Dr. Jalil wanted to specialise in
paediatrics. “But when I became a Medical
Officer, we did a rotation of the different
types of surgery. I was drawn to plastic
surgery. I was told that not everyone can
be a plastic surgeon. You have to be
patient and have the talent to imagine
here for multiple procedures so I can
sometimes be operating for up to 10 hours
on one patient. In terms of safety, the
number of hours that I operate on a patient
isn’t what matters so much as the condition
and health of the patient to start with. Most
of the patients who come to me are fit.”
In fact, Dr. Jalil’s primary concern is the
safety of the patient. “At consultation, the
first thing I do is to send the patient for a
full check up. If the patient is under 35, we
will do a blood test as a minimum. Patients
over 35 will get a full check up – blood
tests, blood pressure, a stress test or ECG if
necessary. If the patient has a specific medical
problem, he/she will be assessed by the
appropriate doctor and the anaesthetist
first to ensure that the condition is well
controlled before surgery.”
With patients who are over 60 years of
age, Dr. Jalil prefers to keep procedures
under eight hours. After a long procedure,

what the end result will be. A general
surgeon will do five stitches when sewing
up a large wound whereas a plastic
surgeon might do 50,” he explains. Dr. Jalil
clearly did – and does – have the patience
and skill for this specialty.
“Over the past 10 years, 70 percent of
my workload has been in cosmetic surgery,”
Dr. Jalil says, explaining that the reconstructive
work was part of being in a fullfledged
hospital setting. The move doesn’t mean
that he will be turning his back on
reconstructive work entirely. He envisages
that he will still do it “upon request”. But
he enjoys cosmetic surgery.
“I do cosmetic surgery from Monday to
Friday, usually two to three cases a day,”
he adds. “I currently get two or three foreign
patients a week, and they tend to travel
the patient remains in the hospital for
observation.
Dr. Jalil’s patients mainly come from
Australia and New Zealand, though he also
gets patients from the United Kingdom,
Singapore, Indonesia, Hong Kong, the
United States and Canada. Just about
every week he can be seen performing
tummy tucks, face lifts, breast augmentation,
reduction and lift, as well as liposuction.
But when asked to quantify how many of
each procedure he has done over the
years, he replies: “I haven’t kept count. But
there have been a lot of all of them!”
Rave Reviews From Patients
Dr. Jalil states that Malaysia’s advantage is
its exchange rate and price. But his results
have also been consistently good, and word

has gotten around. Many of his patients are
referred to him by other patients.
“Patients chat in chat rooms on the
internet about their experience after surgery
with me,” he explains about one way his
patients have been learning about his skills.
In 25 years of plastic surgery Dr.
Jalil has certainly learnt a thing or two!
“Experience really helps. For example, my
facelift 20 years ago was not as good as it
is today. I’ve learnt a few tricks, like how
much to pull and adjust. While the basic
procedure may be set, plastic surgery
takes a lot of patience and individualised
care as each patient is different. Procedures
can take time and I do everything –
whether it’s laser rejuvenation work or
closing up wounds – myself.”
When he isn’t operating, this self
confessed workaholic can be found attending
conferences to ensure that he keeps up
with the latest procedures in the world of
plastic surgery. Unsurprisingly, he is often
called upon to present papers on his work
as well.
Of his move to Beverly Wilshire Medical
Centre, Dr. Jalil says: “I am looking forward
to the challenge. You come to a stage
where you want to go one step further in
terms of patient care and we will do that in
this small but private and luxurious boutique
beauty medical centre.”

Ful-filling
Beauty Treatments
Consultant Aesthetic Physician and Executive
Director, Dr. Liow Tiong Sin, reveals how dermal
filler injections are shaping up to be the preferred
method for enhancing the face and body.
Over the past decade, more and more patients
have been seen to favour nonsurgical or
noninvasive methods to fulfill their aesthetic
needs. Those looking for the safest and most
effective treatments sans scalpel can now
turn to the Beverly Wilshire Medical Centre.
Whether it is treatments for the face, body
or skin, there is no shortage of cosmetic
procedures at this boutique medical centre.
According to Consultant Aesthetic
Physician and Executive Director of Beverly
Wilshire Medical Centre, Dr. Liow Tiong Sin,
body enhancement procedures such as
breast and buttock augmentation are popular
requests from the Centre’s patients. Previously,

Always refining his skills, Dr. Liow regularly
attends clinical workshops and training
around the world to finetune his techniques.
His most popular treatment is breast
augmentation with fillers. He finds that
healthy women in their late 30s to early 40s
or those still of childbearing age are suitable
candidates for this procedure.
“Many mothers opt for breast feeding
nowadays. However, following that they tend
to get breast engorgement as well as sagging
breasts,” reveals Dr. Liow. “Whether they
wish to add fullness or to slightly elevate their

breasts, hyaluronic acid fillers can be utilised
to suit each individual’s needs as the fillers
offer the volume and shape that patients
desire.” He adds that the procedure is short
(about one to oneandahalf hours) and
involves no downtime so patients can leave
the clinic immediately after the procedure.
Dr. Liow says that patients are alert
throughout the whole procedure and able to
assess the results once the procedure is
complete. Immediately after, he advises
patients to wear a support bra to support the
new size and shape of the breasts. “For the

silicone implants were the popular option
for these procedures but nowadays dermal
injectable fillers are proving to be the
preferred method for body enhancement.
With over 10 years experience with dermal
fillers, Dr. Liow is well aware of the advantages
that this method brings to patients. “Silicone
implants in the breasts or buttocks may feel
and look artificial but hyaluronic acid fillers
offer a more natural touch and appearance,”
observes Dr. Liow, who has treated hundreds
of patients in his practice. “Most patients
prefer having these fillers over implants and
surgery, which are invasive.”

patients cannot do vigorous exercise or go to
a hot sauna, spa or jacuzzi. After that period,
they can return to their normal activities,”
notes Dr. Liow, adding that results last for up
to a year as hyaluronic acid dissipates and
needs to be topped up. Hyaluronic acid is a
safe substance that is used extensively for
face rejuvenation, enhancement and sculpting.
It is a substance that dissipates naturally with
time.
Besides the breasts, Dr. Liow also uses
temporary (hyaluronic acid) or semipermanent
(hydrogel) fillers to sculpt the whole face.
“Using the fillers, I shape the chin, nose,
eyebrows and cheeks to provide more profile
and sharper features. The fillers can also add
fullness to the lips and soften nasolabial
folds,” he explains. Dr. Liow says fillers are
particularly useful in shaping the nose. “The
nose is usually a very sensitive area, so I inject
hyaluronic acid filler mixed with lidocaine
(anaesthetic solution) using a cannula to
prevent patients from feeling pain. It is a
comfortable procedure and patients experience
no bruising afterwards,” shares Dr. Liow, stating
that results can last from 12 to 18 months.
Dr. Liow assures that, at Beverly Wilshire,
patients will find the right treatments along
with excellent services. “At our onestop
beauty medical centre, we prioritise patients’
comfort and privacy and are on a quest to
continually improve our services. We’re
equipped with the latest technology and
advanced medical equipment but at the same
time, our treatments are priced reasonably,”
says Dr. Liow. “The most important thing is
for patients to do some research on their
desired treatment, find a reputable centre
and check on the doctor’s credentials before
agreeing to a procedure,” he advises.

Restoring The
Skin’s Radiance
Consultant Aesthetic Physician, Dr. Karen Po,
speaks about unveiling healthy and radiant skin
with the most advanced skin resurfacing treatment.
At Beverly Wilshire, the medical team has
access to hightech equipment from
international, reputable brands that are FDA
approved and backed by clinical research of
the highest safety standards. One such
machine is the Fraxel® DUAL 1550/1927 laser,
which provides skin resurfacing treatments
for a smoother, fresher and younger looking
appearance.
Unlike other laser devices, the Fraxel®
DUAL combines two treatment modalities to
target both the surface and deeper layers of
the skin. It can penetrate deep into the skin’s
layers, targeting wrinkles and scars that may
have formed due to acne, chicken pox and
stretch marks; and it can target superficial
concerns, pigmentation problems like age
spots, fine lines, rough skin texture, open
pores and uneven skin tone.
“This latest version of the Fraxel® laser
spells an exciting era for aesthetic practitioners.
Now, doctors can combine these two treatment
modes and tailor them to patients’ skin
conditions. We can target more problems
with fewer sessions, making treatments more
cost effective,” comments Consultant Aesthetic
Physician, Dr. Karen Po, adding that almost
the whole body can be treated including the
face, décolletage and abdomen.
Her Life’s Passion

Dr. Po’s interest in aesthetic medicine is very
personal and grew as she sought a remedy for
the café au lait birthmark on her daughter’s
face.On top of her Bachelor of Medicine and
Bachelor of Surgery degrees, Dr. Po also
holds a Master degree in Botulinum Toxin and
Filler Techniques and a Diploma in Aesthetic
Medicine from the American Academy of
Aesthetic Medicine. She has a special
interest in pigmentation disorders as well as
regenerative and antiaging medicine.
Since employing different skin
resurfacing machines over the past three
years, Dr. Po has witnessed the significant
impact of Fraxel® DUAL on patient outcomes.
results are unveiled: the new skin is fairer,
softer and more radiant and has an even tone.
In the coming months, results will gradually
improve as the skin continues to make new
collagen, leaving the skin looking more
rejuvenated,” shares Dr. Po, adding that the
treatment can enhance the outcome of a face
lift as well.
“I love teaching and sharing my experience. I
hope to educate the public so that they are more
aware of the technology available to produce the
best results.” – Dr. Karen Po
“Conventional resurfacing techniques like
dermabrasion and the CO2 laser are some
what invasive because they strip off layers of
the skin’s surface, and therefore require
longer downtime when healing,” she explains.
“The Fraxel® DUAL does not involve
removing or vaporising the tissue, so the
superficial skin layer is left intact and
uninjured while the energy is being delivered
into the skin.” Patient comfort is also
heightened with the Fraxel® DUAL’s cooling
system, which is attached to the laser’s
handpiece. The system blows cool air as the
skin is being treated and Dr. Po says patients
feel more comfortable and experience less
pain compared to the CO2 and older lasers.
“Immediately after the procedure, the
skin will turn red as the blood vessels open up.
The next day, scabbing and bronzing of the
skin occurs due to new tissue formation and
the skin may also start to peel. As the skin
peels off between the third and sixth days,
Before
After

81
To assist the skin’s healing, Dr. Po advises
patients to slather on a hydrating moisturiser
while avoiding harsh irritants like glycolic acid,
RetinA and benzoyl peroxide. Sun avoidance
is also fundamental to the treatment’s
aftercare. “When going out in the sun,
patients should take extra precautions like
wearing sunglasses, a wide brim hat and
applying a good amount of sunblock with a
minimum of SPF 30 every three to four
hours,” she counsels.
After two years of using the Fraxel®
DUAL and witnessing its many benefits, Dr.
Po says it is easily her number one choice for
skin rejuvenating treatment. “I love teaching
and sharing my experience. I hope to educate
the public so that they are more aware of the
technology available to produce the best
results. This technology is safe and well
researched, and can naturally enhance your
appearance without any prolonged social
withdrawal,” she shares.
Having said that, Dr. Karen also advises
patients to lead a healthy lifestyle as beauty
stems from within. “Aesthetic treatments can
only do so much, you also need to watch your
diet, exercise and lead a healthy lifestyle to
look good,” she says.

Raising The Bar
In Dentistry
Managing Director and Consultant Orthodontist,
Implantologist and Laser Dentist, Dato’ Dr. How
Kim Chuan, talks about the latest technology
and specialised services offered at Beverly
Wilshire Dental Specialist Centre.
Our teeth and jawbone support 66 to 68
percent of our facial structure but according
to Consultant Orthodontist, Implantologist
and Specialist in Laser Dentistry, Dato’ Dr.
How Kim Chuan, most patients are unaware
about their importance. “Our teeth and
underlying bone are the fundamental
foundation of our facial structure. No matter
how radiant your skin is, your appearance
will never look right if your teeth are severely
damaged,” says Dr. How, who has over 15
years experience in dentistry.
At Beverly Wilshire Dental Specialist
Centre, Dr. How emphasises the improvement
of this foundation both functionally and
aesthetically by offering various services
including orthodontics, periodontics, laser
dentistry, oral surgery and aesthetic
dentistry.

Modern Dental Technology
According to Dr. How, cheaper costs, doctors’
expertise and skills and their meticulous
attention to detail and services are luring
more international patients to obtain dental
treatments in Malaysia. He believes the
availability of hightech equipment and
facilities is also an important factor in this
rising attraction. “Our investment in the
latest dental technology and facilities
supports us in performing a very complex,
high level of work. We possess the best
equipment so we can offer the best for
patients,” says Dr. How, who is always among
the first to acquire the latest technology.
A recent addition to the centre is the
Planmeca ProMax Cone Beam 3D, a
revolutionary digital system that captures
threedimensional, high quality images of
the oral anatomy, face and jawbone. The
system uses very low radiation (about one
tenth of the normal dose used in conventional
Xray machines) ensuring patients’ safety

At Beverly Wilshire, the medical and dental
specialists join forces to devise a toptotoe
aesthetics and health solution for patients.
“The team of plastic surgeons and
aesthetic physicians specialise in improving
soft tissue (the skin and muscle) defects.
They collaborate with our team of dentists
and orthodontists who are responsible for
treating hard tissue (the teeth and
underlying bone),” states Dr. How.
Each week, the doctors gather to consult
patients before discussing the cases and
developing treatment plans. Alongside Dr.
How, the specialists contribute their expertise
in many complex cases, including facial
asymmetry and cleft lip and palate. “Our
aesthetics specialists perform more than just
conventional procedures like filler injections
and breast augmentation; they also play an
important role alongside the dental team to
design and restore beautiful smiles,” shares
Dr. How.

during diagnosis. “With this system, we can
select the areas we want to capture, thereby
having more control on radiation. So far, no
other imaging system is capable of that,”
reveals Dr. How.
Effective and Safe Treatments
Dr. How always employs the newest and
safest techniques to guarantee patients’
comfort during treatments. He regularly
utilises the Waterlase iPlus from Biolase, the
advanced alltissue dentallaser technology,
to perform bloodless gum shaping and
recently integrated a new sinus lift technique
developed in South Korea.
“Unlike traditional sinus lift procedures,
this latest sinus lift kit allows us to lift the
fragile sinus membrane safely, leaving
patients with minimal swelling and ready for
implant placement. This takes 30 minutes to
complete, compared with conventional
methods which take two hours,” notes Dr.
How, who also employs an atraumatic
extraction system from Germany which
preserves the gum and socket during tooth
extraction, without causing pain and swelling
to patients.
Additionally, the centre’s operating
theatre is equipped with an autofocus camera
that records procedures as they are being
done, which is convenient for educational
purposes. Thanks to this equipment, 30
orthodontists recently watched Dr. How
performing surgery via a live feed on a screen
in a separate room.
“My goal is always to educate people and
by showing them our cases and techniques,
we can prove that we have the skills, expertise
and facilities to deliver treatments safely and
effectively,” comments Dr. How.

dental team is committed to customising
smiles according to each unique individual.
According to Dr. How, women’s teeth
are sharper, smaller and more defined than
men’s, whose teeth are usually rounder and
broader. Women also display more of their
upper incisors (the first four front teeth)
than men. He takes these aspects into
account when designing teeth based on the
patient’s gender. Dr. How says patients can
also customise their teeth to complement
the shape of their body.
“We design patients’ teeth in such a
way so they are proportional to the patient’s
face and body. Tinysized teeth on skinny
females will make them look smaller, so we
make the teeth slightly broader to balance
their appearance,” he elaborates, saying
that he also considers the patient’s eyes,
nose, cheeks, chin and neck when creating
a smile. “We are meticulously detailed in
our work to tailor to a patients’ appearance.”
Furthermore, Dr. How reveals that
many European patients come to the
centre requesting to look like Asians.
“Europeans generally have teeth that are
too straight and upright. They have flat lips
and always display dark buccal corridors
(the dark space between the corners of the
mouth and upper teeth). Asian teeth are
usually tautly angled and they have more
contoured profiles. We try to take these
elements and implement them in European
patients by modifying their incisor display,
reshaping their teeth, or repositioning their
jaws if necessary,” shares Dr. How.
For patients with uneven gums, Dr.
How often sculpts the gum line to enhance
their smiles using the Waterlase iPlus, the
alltissue dental laser. Unlike a knife, the
laser cuts in smooth curves without causing
any bleeding. “Cutting gums with a knife
damages a lot of cells and causes massive
bleeding, making it difficult to see during
treatment. With the laser, the procedure is
bloodless and results are more beautiful
and predictable. The cost is cheaper too, as
it shortens the treatment time,” notes Dr.
How.

reconstruction, Dr. How provides temporary
teeth, made from composite materials
which look like real teeth, that patients can
try out for a week. Patients can request
changes.
Dr. How combines patients’ wishes with
what he thinks is ideal and unique for them,
further refining the temporary teeth. This
process continues until patients are fully
satisfied with the results and are committed
to a final look.
“We take pictures of patients before,

come here. By the end of the final treatment,

was very complex, even involving general
anaesthesia, but we successfully managed
to give her fullmouth rehabilitation.”
With such dedicated services, patients
are sure to leave the centre with much more
than just a smile. “I feel a great sense of
achievement and satisfaction when I see
patients happy with their beautiful smiles.
As a doctor, I feel like I’ve made a contribution
to their lives,” comments Dr. How.
