THE HEIGHTS
SSM Health St. Mary’s Hospital
and THE HEIGHTS Partnership
SSM Health St. Mary’s Hospital is excited to announce a new partnership agreement with THE
HEIGHTS Community Center aimed at promoting health, wellness and education in Richmond
Heights and surrounding communities. As part of the agreement, St. Mary’s will support health
education programs and community events provided by THE HEIGHTS. “It has always been our
goal to provide excellent health, wellness and recreation services for our constituents and this
community alliance with St. Mary’s will only strengthen and fortify what we can offer – together,”
said Teresa L. Proebsting, director of parks and recreation.
Avoid these Common Dangers for a
Safe and Fun Summer
6. Trampolines. Every summer children come
into the emergency room with broken bones and
serious gashes caused by falling off a trampoline
or falling on the metal springs. If you have a
trampoline, install protective netting around the
trampoline to prevent the most serious accidents.
By Paul Pfeiffer, MD, director of the SSM Health
St. Mary’s Hospital emergency department
The summer is a particularly busy time for
emergency rooms. Many of the injuries caused
by accidents and sports could be prevented
with appropriate gear, parental guidance and
common sense. Here are some of the biggest
summer dangers and ways you can minimize
your risk.
1. Bikes, Scooters, Inline Skates and
Skateboards. According to the Centers for
Disease Control and Prevention, bicycle
accidents are responsible for nearly 500,000
emergency room visits each year. All riders –
young and old – need to wear a properly-fitting
helmet, which can prevent up to 85 percent
of head injuries. Wrist guards, knee pads,
elbow pads and shin pads add extra protection
for scooters and skates. Remember to wear
reflective material and use a light when riding at
dusk or dawn.
2. Drowning. Drowning is one of the leading
causes of accidental death among young
children and can happen right in front of eyes –
quickly and quietly. It goes without saying that
children should never be left unattended near
water and should always wear a life jacket when
near a pool or boating, but it’s equally important
for parents to remain vigilant especially when
there are a lot of people around. Splash alarms
can add an extra level of safety, but nothing can
substitute that careful supervision.
3. Heat and Dehydration. Common signs of
heat exhaustion include confusion, dizziness,
fainting, fatigue, headache, muscle cramps,
nausea and heavy sweating. When the
temperatures soar, it’s important to keep well
hydrated and take frequent breaks. Never leave
your children (or pets) in the car, even for a short
time, because the car can heat up quickly.
4. Guns. More than 17,000 people, including
4,000 children, are victims of unintentional
shootings every year. If you own a firearm, it’s
critical to store the unloaded firearm in a locked
cabinet or safe. Your ammunition should be
stored in a separate, locked location. Install
a gun locking device for an additional safety
precaution. Finally, talk with your children about
the dangers of guns. Remind them to alert an
adult and never touch an unattended firearm
(including outside of the home).
7. Car Accidents. Taking a summer road trip?
Avoid the temptation to let your children get out
of their car seat or booster during long road trips.
Being properly restrained in a car can be the
difference between life and death. Instead, make
more frequent stops to let your children burn off
their energy.
If you have a minor emergency and don’t need
immediate care, you can avoid the waiting room
and hold your place in line, online. You also can
schedule appointments online for any of SSM’s
Urgent Care Centers. For more information, go
to: http://www.ssmhealth.com/access/now/
5. All-Terrain Vehicles. ATVs are not toys. They
are heavy, fast, motorized vehicles. Children and
inexperienced drivers should not drive ATVs,
especially on dangerous terrains where it can
be easy to lose control and flip the ATV. If you
choose to drive or ride on an ATV, it’s absolutely
necessary to wear a helmet.

St. Mary’s Hospital emergency department

Richmond Heights Memorial Tree
Program
The Richmond Heights Memorial Tree
Program offers an opportunity for
individuals, businesses or civic groups
to honor or remember an individual in a
unique way. Donations to the Memorial
Tree Program help offset the costs associated with acquisition of the memorial tree and on-going maintenance of
the tree during its normal lifecycle.
A Memorial Tree without a recognition
plaque can be requested in memory
of loved ones or in memory of special
events for the amount of $175. A tree
will be selected for planting along a
city street or property and a letter of
recognition will be sent to the honoree.
The individual making the donation
may request that the tree be planted in
a particular Council District, if planting
spaces are available.
The Tree Memorial plaque is a cast
stone with the words “This tree planted
in memory” and has a bronze plaque
for personalizing with 4 lines of up to
18 characters each. A sample of the
plaque is located on the south side of
Richmond Heights City Hall at 1330 S.
