The metro area encompasses about 18 square miles and is situated between the Santa Ynez Mountains to the north and the Santa Barbara channel to the south. Elevation within the city limit ranges from sea level to 850 feet. Access: The Santa Barbara Airport (SBA) is affiliated with seven airlines and offers flights by both commercial and private planes. There are non-stop flights to twelve major cities including Dallas, Denver, Las Vegas, Los Angeles, Phoenix, Portland, Sacramento, Salt Lake City, San Diego, San Francisco, San Jose, and Seattle. Connections can be made to destinations worldwide. Bus service is available with Greyhound Bus Lines and there are daily arrivals and departures from the convenient downtown terminal. The Amtrak Station on State Street fields stops by northbound and southbound trains on a daily basis. Climate: Temperatures for the Santa Barbara area range from a low of 56 to a high of 82 degrees during the summer months (April-September), and a low of 47 to a high of 66 degrees in the winter months (October-March). The average rainfall is 18 inches, and the air quality is generally good. History: The Santa Barbara area was discovered and claimed for Spain in 1542 by Juan Cabrillo, a Portuguese explorer sailing for Spain. In 1602 Sebastian Vizcaino anchored offshore on December 4th-the feast day of Saint Barbara (patroness of Mariners). The ship’s priest named both the channel and mainland area Santa Barbara in her honor. In April 1782 Padre Junipero Serra established the Presidio Real of Santa Barbara in a grand ceremony, and four years later construction of Mission Santa Barbara began. It was the tenth of 21 Franciscan missions to be built in upper-California. Soon Yankee traders, tourists and health seekers, followed by wealthy Easterners settled in Santa Barbara because of the mild winters. The mixture of newcomers and Spanish descendants has shaped the area for what it has become today. Population: Santa Barbara County has a population of about 400,000 residents, 90,000 of whom live within the city limits. Neighboring Santa Barbara County are San Luis Obispo County with a population of about 250,000 and Ventura County which is home to 750,000 people. Churches: Over 140 churches in the area represent almost every faith and denomination. 5 Accommodations: Santa Barbara boasts over 90 hotels, plus numerous bed and breakfast inns, all of which provide over 4,500 rooms from the modest to the most luxurious for both business travelers and tourists. Restaurants: There are some 400 restaurants, coffee shops, cafes, and snack bars, many with sidewalk cabaret tables for outdoor dining. Menus around Santa Barbara range from fast food to fine dining. There are also a wide variety of restaurants that feature exotic cuisine from all over the world. Media: The Santa Barbara News-Press is locally owned and operated daily newspaper with circulation in excess of 40,000. There are seven AM, and nine FM radio stations, along with eleven television stations available with antenna or cable. Economy: Santa Barbara’s employment force is mainly in service-related companies. The economy is based on electronics and space age research, light manufacturing, educational facilities, tourist and convention services. Additional contributors to the economic stability of the area are commercial fishing, agriculture, government and finance, commercially produced minerals such as petroleum, natural gas, sand and gravel, and wholesale and retail enterprises. The financial community consists of 11 banks with 36 offices, and 8 savings and loan associations with 17 offices. Schools and Libraries: The Santa Barbara School District’s school programs include elementary, middle/junior high, senior high, special education, and continuation curriculum and rank among the best in the state. Santa Barbara is also home of Santa Barbara City College, Westmont College, and the University of California, as well as Brooks Institute School of Photography and the Music Academy of the West. The public library system consists of six branches and a bookmobile. The system contains over 300,000 books, 6,000 records, numerous subscriptions to periodicals, thousands of pamphlets, and over 4,000 videos. Transportation: The Metropolitan Transit District provides bus service to and from various points in Santa Barbara daily. Fares are $1.75 dollar for the general public and $0.85 cents for senior citizens (over 62), and packaged ticket deals can decrease the price per ride. The District also has electric bus service available for areas not serviced by regular bus routes. Medical Facilities: There are four hospitals that serve the medical needs of the greater Santa Barbara area with a total of over 800 beds to meet the health requirements of the community. 6 Culture: The Santa Barbara Museum of Art is one of five privately maintained museums. Take a look at some of the highlights with an example of the housing available. History, charm, oceans, mountains, flowers, young and old—you can find what you’re looking for in Santa Barbara. 39 40 MONTECITO Full of mystique and grandeur, history and beauty, Montecito, approximately eight square miles of hidden neighborhoods and expansive estates, has been the destination of choice for celebrities and millionaires for over one hundred years. Located a couple miles east of Santa Barbara, “Montecito”, which is Spanish for “little mountain”, first received attention from wealthy Easterners and Midwesterners, in the late 1800’s. These early settlers developed large and lavish estates. Today, Montecito offers varied options for residential living, such as an easy-care condominium just steps from the beach, a hidden cottage set on a tree-shaded lane, as well as large estates on many acres, both old and new. The pace of life here is unhurried, and it is easy to see why Montecito has become a desirable second home location for big city dwellers. Whether you’re a famous movie star or a curious traveler, you’ll find Montecito to be truly a lush paradise. 41 PRICE RANGE FROM $1 MILLION TO $32 MILLION+ HOPE RANCH From 1888 until the 1920’s, the Pacific Improvement Company shaped the destiny of Hope Ranch, molding it into its present image as a wealthy suburb of Santa Barbara. Many of the amenities offered to members of the Hope Ranch Home Association, established in the 1930’s, include cabanas for a private beach club fronting the ranch, a polo field, archery range, skeetshooting facility, tennis courts, and 30 miles of bridle paths. Space prohibits a full account of Hope Ranch’s outdoor-living background, shared by middle-class families as well as the affluent. As a result of this independent spirit, Hope Ranch continues to maintain the lofty standards of suburban living which have been in effect since the late Harold S. Chase advertised his “sun-kissed, ocean-washed, mountain-girded, island-guarded Hope Ranch” more than half a century ago. 42 PRICE RANGE FROM $2 MILLION TO $30 MILLION+ T H E B E AC H The Santa Barbara area is blessed with a number of very beautiful beaches and each beach has its own distinctive identity and attributes. Whether you want to swim, surf, play volleyball, or just lie in the sun, there’s a stretch of sand for everyone. Some of our beaches are extremely accessible and have lifeguard services and facilities such as restrooms and barbeque pits, while other beaches are more remote and offer greater solitude and adventure. Rincon Point Rincon Point Carpinteria Sand Point Road Padaro Lane Sandyland Cove Carpinteria Montecito Fernald Point Hammonds Beach Summerland Summerland / Lookout Park Santa Barbara Arroyo Burro Beach (“Hendry’s Beach”) Shoreline Beach Leadbetter Beach West Beach East Beach Isla Vista Beach Hope Ranch Hope Ranch Beach Goleta / Isla Vista Goleta Beach 43 PRICE RANGE FROM $3.5 MILLION TO $30 MILLION+ THE UPPER EAST City planners regard the Upper East as perhaps the most important factor in Santa Barbara’s growth. More undeveloped space and a higher percentage of older one-family homes exist in the East than in any other of the city’s neighborhoods. The Upper East has been identified as a bailiwick of the wealthy elite since 1895. Santa Barbara’s famous community playhouse, the Lobero Theater, located in the Upper East, was built in 1924, and was known as the cultural center years ahead of Los Angeles and San Diego. 44 PRICE RANGE RANGEFROM FROM$800,000 $800,000TO TO$3 $3MILLION MILLION PRICE THE RIVIERA Bridging the 2 mile span that separates Mission and Sycamore Canyons, the sylvan uplift which padres knew as the “mission ridge” has for the past 65 years been known as “the Riviera” due to its resemblance to slopes along the Mediterranean coast of France and Italy. Santa Barbarans lucky enough to live on this ridge attach premium value to their homes because of their unsurpassed views of the city, mountains, sea, and islands. The Riviera is famous for its semitropical appearance. The flowing curves at the west end of Alameda Padre Serra today mark the old streetcar right of way, the curves being essential to provide a gradient which electric cars could negotiate. One of the older and more stabilized neighborhoods in the city, the Riviera also ranks as one of the wealthiest and best-educated. “We know how lucky we are not to have to go to Europe to enjoy the Riviera life-style,” one cosmopolite commented. “We’ve got a better Riviera right here in Santa Barbara.” 45 PRICE RANGE FROM $800,000 TO $3 MILLION M I S S I O N C A N YO N Ethel Barrymore, the late empress of stage and screen, once told a friend, “Fortunate indeed is the person who can live in Santa Barbara, and doubly blessed if his home is located in Mission Canyon.” American newcomers, during the 1850’s were quick to appreciate the sylvan beauty of Mission Canyon, and they began to move in and build homes. Above them were a series of rocky cascades known as The Seven Falls. Homes in Mission Canyon range from the humble adobe, to magnificent mansions like Glendessary, on the shady lane of the same name. This sprawling halftimbered Tudor manor house was one of the fine homes built before the turn of the century by Christoph Tornoe, a gifted Danish artisan. 46 PRICE RANGE RANGEFROM FROM$800,000 $800,000TO TO$2.5 $2.5MILLION MILLION PRICE SAN ROQUE Few residential neighborhoods of Santa Barbara can boast the rich historical background of the San Roque and Rutherford Park areas. The neighborhood got its name when the first white men arrived in 1769 with Governor Portola. They camped at the mouth of the San Roque Creek, which they named to memorialize the patron saint of invalids, Saint Roque, a Carmelite friar of the 14th century. Now a built-up, economically stabilized suburb, it is admired for its sweeping curved streets, its luxuriant landscaping, and its harmonious blend of many architectural themes - Spanish Colonial, English Tudor, French Normandy, California Redwood, Italianate and American Colonial, mostly built since 1925. With shopping and banking facilitated at their very doorstep, residents of San Roque feel that they are living in one of Santa Barbara’s choicest residential neighborhoods, where investing in home or business property guarantees future security. 47 PRICE RANGE RANGEFROM FROM$600,000 $600,000TO TO$1.5 $1.5MILLION MILLION PRICE SAMARKAND Samarkand meant “the land of heart’s desire” in the archaic Persian tongue. As the dominating landmark of a hilly, elevated neighborhood, the Samarkand gave its name to an area bounded on the east by Oak Park. The Samarkand neighborhood could point with pride to one of America’s most beautiful and prestigious retirement centers, originally a hotel. The Samarkand District Improvement association, one of the most active in the city, reported that Samarkand has one of the lowest population densities in Southern California. 48 PRICE RANGE RANGEFROM FROM$600,000 $600,000TO TO$1.3 $1.3MILLION MILLION PRICE T HE M ESA Mesa, a Spanish word meaning “table”, has been applied to the flat beach fronting the ocean along Santa Barbara’s southwestern border since mission days. The Mesa is one of the oldest historical areas in the city, paradoxically it is one of our youngest residential districts. Artists and writers have a special affinity for the Mesa as a carefree place to live. City weather records show that the Mesa’s winter temperatures are 10 to 12 degrees warmer than downtown, and 10 to 12 degrees cooler in the summer. This climate attraction, plus the spectacular marine views, caused a housing boom after World War II, creating the Mesa Improvement Association, dedicated to protecting the Mesa life-style as one of the most envied in the South Coast area. 49 PRICE RANGE RANGEFROM FROM$600,000 $600,000TO TO$3 $3MILLION MILLION PRICE THE WESTSIDE The “Westside Story” of Santa Barbara is laid in our city’s first suburb. Cottage Hospital and its surrounding laboratories, rest homes, professional buildings, clinics and other medically-oriented satellites, has made it very convenient for the local residents. City Hall recognizes the Westside as the oldest established residential area in town: six out of ten houses were built prior to 1940. Santa Barbara’s Westside is one of the last frontiers for that great American tradition, one that is daily becoming scarce - the single family home. 50 PRICE RANGE RANGEFROM FROM$400,000 $400,000TO TO$1.3 $1.3MILLION MILLION PRICE G OLETA Tucked between lush green hillsides and the sparkling Pacific lies Goleta Valley. Just minutes from downtown Santa Barbara, the Goleta community is characterized by comfortable single family homes, and outstanding public elementary and secondary schools. Plan on enjoying the many recreational opportunities, historic sites and seasonal festivals. Combining all that the area offers with a mild year-round climate and idyllic natural surroundings, it is easy to see why Goleta is the place to be. 51 PRICE RANGE RANGEFROM FROM$400,000 $400,000TO TO$2.5 $2.5MILLION MILLION PRICE CARPINTERIA The Carpinteria Valley is located in the southeast corner of Santa Barbara County. It’s a little piece of coastal paradise tucked midway between Ventura and Santa Barbara, seeming to shy away from the glare of tourism’s spotlight, but at the same time welcoming all who chance to discover its charms. Carpinteria’s splendid natural setting and small town charm remain relatively undiscovered. Enjoy the small town pleasures, where tree-shaded streets, parades and craft shows evoke a gentle way of life. Dozens of antique stores, small shops and restaurants are clustered along the main streets of Carpinteria and nearby Summerland, making the area a browser’s paradise. Carpinteria is home to a world-renowned surfing area off Rincon Point, and a beautiful swimming beach. Nature smiles kindly on the Carpinteria Valley, making it home to many nurseries. 52 PRICE RANGE RANGEFROM FROM$400,000 $400,000TO TO$1.5 $1.5MILLION MILLION PRICE CONDOMINIUMS The condominium market is very strong in our area. The prices range from the following: Santa Barbara $350,000 to $1,500,000+ Montecito $700,000 to $2,000,000 Goleta $250,000 to $600,000 Carpinteria $300,000 to $1,200,000 53 PRICE RANGE RANGEFROM FROM$800,000 $800,000TO TO$3 $3MILLION MILLION PRICE
