WHAT TIME IS IT?
By Pastor Kevin
Every morning for as long as they could remember, our great grandparents and maybe even
our grandparents slid out of bed each morning and took cold showers. And it really does not matter
what part of the country you are from because, cold showers in the early morning in the south feel
pretty much the same as cold showers anywhere else. They’re cold.
Every evening, these same people came back to a house without air conditioning. They might
have propped a fan in the window, but that seemed more like a concession than anything they
really needed. Many lived in homes they built for themselves; they had little insulation and many
had tin roofs, so a window fan pretty much blew hot air around. But they just seem to make it
work. These inconveniences weren’t a challenge to these people; they were opportunities. No
water heater? Take cold showers. Only three channels on TV; if they had TV? When nothing was on
they talked with each other. No clothes dryer? They hung them up on a line. No phone? They walked
to someone’s house when they needed to talk to them. Something broke? They didn’t buy a new
one; they just fixed it or did without it.
When I manage to pull myself away from computer, I’m sometimes struck with how different
my life is. There’s never a drop of cold water anywhere near my shower. My first instinct is to buy
what I need, never to make it. In the evenings, I have to force my mind to stay present on my
family instead of drifting away to what "important" social media updates I’m missing. But it’s not
really the technology differences that hit the hardest. You see, there was a depth to people that
I’ve found much harder to emulate. I’m often too distracted to get there. They just moved and
breathed faith; it naturally flowed from their character. Yet I struggle to stay afloat in an ocean of
distractions. Perhaps those cold showers really would do me some good.
This isn’t a call to jettison… all the technology (honestly, I can be just as distracted by books
and worries as I can by my television). Instead, what I think most about these people was their
resolve to remember what mattered most. They never seemed to care about what they lacked
because they knew what they had. They loved God and learned from His Word, and that satisfied
them.
Too often, the busyness of our lives keep us from remembering an important concept. God
has blessed us, regardless of whether we think he has or not. God has provided for us. We get
caught up in today’s latest technology and updating ourselves to be able to use this technology. We
email, text, tweet, Facebook, Instagram each other, and regardless what these modern preachers
say about being more connected with each other and with the world we become more and more
distracted from what we really should focus on. We become more and more separated from each
other every day. Luke 10:40 reminds us “But Martha was distracted by all the preparations that had
to be made. She came to him and asked, “Lord, don't you care that my sister has left me to do the
work by myself? Tell her to help me!”
I think it’s time we put down all the technological activities, and distractions and then put
ourselves down around the table. Take time to share meals together; talk about your day with each
other. Share with your family, friends, and neighbors before it’s too late. For some this may be
difficult because many have never taken the time to get to know their neighbors. Some may not
share anything with their family but their last name. Spring is a time of new life and growth; let’s
begin a new life together sharing and growing our lives with each other. Let’s take time together.

TRUSTEE’S CORNER
By LUMC Trustees
Our new sound system is now fully installed including video feed to both the Fellowship Hall and
the Nursery. The portable projector, screen, and computer are being set up now and may be used
in Worship in the not too distant future. Finishing the Control Booth remains on our list and will
hopefully be completed this month.
Final Plans for the renovation of the playground this spring is our top priority right now. We will
be announcing a work day for anyone interested in helping with this renovation very soon. If you
have ideas for playground equipment, please talk with any Trustee.
LUMC has been blessed with funds to repair, pave, and strip the main parking lot. This will also be
done this spring. Everyone will be made aware of when this will be done via e-mail.
As many of you have noticed, we have water leaks in several places in the Sanctuary ceiling.
We are in the process of getting estimates to repair these leaks if at all possible OR to replace the
entire roof. We will keep you informed as we learn more about this potentially extensive
maintenance item.
Please help us manage utilities at LUMC like you would manage them at home – turn off lights,
reset thermostats if they are changed, and report water leaks.
Please report all maintenance issues to your friendly Trustee!!! (THANKS ALOT)
“… with men this is impossible, but with God all things are possible” (Math 19:26)
LUMC United Methodist Men
The Men’s Ministry would like to thank everyone who came out for the Shrove Tuesday All You
Could Eat Pancake Supper. Your Love Offering covered all costs of the meal with some left to
further our outreach efforts. At our March Breakfast, we decided to make this an annual Lent
Kickoff event – so you will be hearing from us again next year.
We are finalizing plans for a FIRE PIT adjacent to the playground. This will be the Men’s
Ministry’s contribution to the playground renovation that will be underway soon. We plan to have
some swings, benches, and Adirondack chairs for groups to use the fire pit for devotions, meetings,
and just a nice place to relax.
Final planning for the
3rd ANNUAL
HOLY SMOKE BBQ DINNER
is underway. The date is set –
SATURDAY MAY 17th.
Flyers will
be going up this month and tickets
will be going on sale about midApril. Reserve the date on your
calendar and come on out for some
of Glen’s fabulous BBQ.
With Easter coming in April and
the BBQ coming in May, the
next Men’s Breakfast will be held
Sunday June 15th in the Family
Life Center.

City Food Drive Benefits
Backpack Ministry
On Saturday, March 22, the city of
Landrum conducted a food drive in the
parking lot of Fred’s to benefit the
backpack ministry.
Landrum City Administrator, Caitlin
Martin, stated that the city has been
looking for ways to be more involved
in the community.
O.P. Earle Elementary was contacted. Susan Henderson, Guidance
Counselor, suggested she call LUMC regarding the backpack
ministry. And that is how it began.
Members of the fire and police departments, city staff, Mayor Bob
Briggs and Martin delivered a trailer loaded with items needed to
feed 31 children on the weekend. We will also be sharing with First
Baptist who feed 13 youth from Landrum Middle School.
Participating in this shared ministry is First Baptist Church of
Landrum and Jacksons Grove UMC.
