Mid-Winter
Ball
to support LOLA
The Twilight Supper Club
& Sandman Lounge presents,
Mid-Winter Ball:
“Romance
the Night Away", a fundraiser for
Land O Lakes Area Artisans, Inc.
(LOLA). On January 21 LOLA is
holding a classic Supper Club
gala to raise money to
improve the Sandra
Hardy Brown Memorial Classroom.
Join and invite your
friends for this mingling fun event where
it’s all about the wonderful people of the Northwoods community. There will be cocktails, a
5-course gourmet meal, live music, dancing, and many surprises!
The Sandra Hardy Brown Memorial Classroom has been the main
classroom for LOLA classes. Now that LOLA has purchased the LOLA
Center for the Arts building it has the opportunity to improve the classroom space. The Mid-Winter Ball proceeds will fund the improvements
to make the classroom space more useful for all forms of art, including
more space for classes and a friendlier
cooking demonstration space.
Come one, come
all, couples and
singles, on January 21 starting
at 5PM.
The
cost is $50 per
person—a guaranteed great value due
to the copious generosity of the Twilight Supper Club & Sandman
Lounge—located on Hwy 45 just south of Hwy B in Land O' Lakes.
For tickets, contact Wendy at (715) 547-3950, go to lolaartswi.com, or
visit the LOLA Center for the Arts, 4262 Highway B, Land O’ Lakes.
LOLA is a 501(c)(3) non-profit art organization that aims to bring enrichment to the lives of north woods residents and visitors through a variety of
creative processes and artistic educational opportunities.

Christmas Card
Art Contest Winner
Christmas Art Contest at the Land O’ Lakes Elementary school—that has become an annual event. The contest is organized by art teacher Kat Koceja. Kids from all grades were invited to
submit a holiday painting or drawing. From these entries, one winner is selected—whose artwork will be
featured on the Schindelholz Dental office Christmas card.
“This year’s contest was unbelievably difficult as most of the entries were just
fantastic.” said Dr. Laura. The 2014 winner was Liam Payne from the kindergarten class. Liam won a “take home” art supply kit and the school
received a check from Drs. Pete & Laura for the art department—benefitting all of the students.

Student Journalism at
Northland Pines HS By: Kate Mendham
Land O’ Lakes Library receives donations
Eagle Eye News is a student run sports journalism group at Northland Pines that is devoted to giving students real world experience in
the fields of journalism and broadcasting. As a group, we attend various
school events, take notes, conduct interviews, and write articles based
on the events.
Before we attend these school activities, we research what we will be
covering. This includes statistics, records, players to watch, and potential
questions we can work with for post-game interviews.
Writing in journalistic styles is a
major part of what Eagle Eye News
strives to do. All the work that we
do gets uploaded to Newswatch
12’s website under the High School
Pages (viewers can find this under the Features tab at the top of
the website). The students in this
journalism group are looking into
the career fields of journalism and
writing, so this is an opportunity
for us to have hands on learning
and gain insight into future professional roles.
This class helps us improve our writing and interviewing skills. This
has been a trial year and therefore limited, but in the future we hope to
expand this program and get more students involved, along with sharing with the public what goes on in our school.
Currently we are covering the
four major winter sports: Girls
Basketball, Girls Hockey, Boys
Basketball, and Boys Hockey.
Girls Basketball is currently 2-2
and takes on Laona/Wabeno on
Monday, December 29, and Tomahawk Friday, January 9. Girls
hockey is 5-1 and ranked 5th in the
state at this time and will take on
Superior Saturday, December 27,
and will play in the Culver’s Cup
December 28-29. Boys Basketball
is 2-2 and plays Hurley Tuesday,
December 30, and WittenbergBirnamwood Friday, January 2.
Boys Hockey is currently 2-2 and
will play in the Kiwanis tournament in Rochester December 29-31.

The Land O’ Lakes Library has received a very generous donation of $400 from the V.F.W State Line Post
8400 of Land O’ Lakes. This donation is intended to increase the large print book collection.
The Friends of the Land O’ Lakes Library recently donated $5,000 to the Land O’ Lakes Public Library for
books and other materials. In addition to donating funds for the purchase of books and other materials, The
Friends group also hosts guest authors, provides an annual kindergarten reading promotion and book giveaway at area schools and supports the library with other programs and events all year long.
The Land O’ Lakes Library is on Facebook, Pinterest, and on the web at www.landolakeslibrary.org.
Back the Badgers!
On January 1st the Wisconsin Badger Football team travels to
Raymond James Stadium in Tampa, FL to take on the Auburn
Tigers in the 2015 Outback Bowl.
Our Wisconsin Badger Trailer will be at Black Oak Inn, on
Highway B in Land O’ Lakes, for the Outback Bowl. The game is
scheduled for 11:00 a.m., and the trailer will be arriving at 10:00
a.m. This, once again, will be a fundraiser for the Headwaters
Food Pantry—which serves Land O’ Lakes, Conover, and Phelps.
There will be Booyah, homemade breads and desserts for sale
(proceeds for the Food Pantry) as well as raffles: including, a Wisconsin Badger bench, 2 wildlife prints, 22012 Rose Bowl hats signed by Ron Dayne #33, and much more.
Come join us for food, raffles, and watch the Badgers win—while supporting a great cause.

outside• Fishing Report & Outdoor Calendar
Report for the Eagle River Chamber of Commerce based on Creative
Brilliance interviews with Eagle River guides “Muskie Matt” of Wild Eagle Lodge, “Ranger Rick” Krueger of
Guide’s Choice Pro Shop, Mat Hegy;
and Eagle River hunting enthusiast,
Dan Anderson.
VILAS COUNTY:
Ice conditions continue to improve, with walleye, northern and
panfish providing good to excellent action through the ice; all in
the Eagle River, Wisconsin area.
Ice conditions continue to improve, with 5-7 inches of ice on
most Eagle River area lakes. Anglers are getting out using foot
travel, and some ATV's and snowmobiles (don't forget - -the Eagle
River snowmobile trails opened on
December 12th – come on up and
get a "two-fer" – great snowmobiling and some legendary ice fishing,
as only Eagle River can provide).
WALLEYE: Fish break edges
and weed edges in 25 feet of water
or less. Use a walleye sucker or a
small shiner under a tip-up, and
place your bait in the bottom foot
of the water column (the walleye
are tight to bottom). All day action
with peaks in the evening. The bite
has been good to excellent.
NORTHERN: Fish 10 feet of
water or less in and around remaining weeds. Use a medium
to large northern sucker minnow
or shiner under a tip-up. Position
your bait just above the weeds.
All day action and the bite has
been good to excellent.
LARGEMOUTH BASS: Anglers going for walleye and northern are catching some "accidental"
largemouth bass who are hitting
their tip-ups in 15 feet of water off
of weed and break edges.
PANFISH: (Crappies, bluegills
and perch). Fish two locations:
Shallow weeds in 10 feet of water
or less, or main lake mud flats in
10-30 feet of water. The perch are
tight to bottom, with the crappies
and gills suspending in the bottom half of the water column. Use
a crappie minnow, spike, waxie
or small plastic on a jig or under a
slip bobber. All day action and the
bite is good to excellent.

The Northland Pines School District works very hard to ensure all
students reach their maximum potential; in pursuit of this goal, the district explored educational improvement options for students. The idea
of the charter school was the result of a committee examining how to
best serve the needs of all students of the Northland Pines School District. This led to the development of the SOAR Charter School, which
opened in the fall of 2013 to 5th - 7th grade students. In 2014 grade 8
was added. Upon the success of SOAR, the committee morphed into a
planning committee to begin an elementary charter school and another
committee to expand SOAR to the High School. Current Northland
Pines area students, open-enrolled individuals, and home-schooled
students are eligible to attend
the SOAR High School. The first year enrollment will include students in grades 9 and 10 in the fall of 2015. Grade 11 will be open for
enrollment in the fall of 2016 and grade 12 will be open for enrollment
in the fall of 2017. The SOAR High School will be located on the Eagle River Campus. SOAR High
School graduation requirements
are higher than the Northland
Pines High School. At SOAR High
School, students must reach 26
credits to graduate. That is: 4 English credits, 3 Math credits, 3 Science credits, 3 Social Studies credits. 1.5 Physical Education/Health
credits, 20 hours of community
service, and 6 elective credits. In
addition, seniors must complete a
senior project and have a letter of
acceptance for continuing education. SOAR High School students
will each have a comprehensive
scope & sequence guide used to
structure student coursework
without limiting student creativity. A web-based computer program, Project Foundry, will serve
as a management and tracking
system for students, advisors, and

For a second year the Green Bay Packers Foundation has awarded a
grant for continued development of the Conover – Phelps Biking and
Walking Trail.
The award, a check for $3,000, was presented to Great Headwaters
Trails (GHT) at the 2014 grant luncheon held at Lambeau Field on
Thursday, Dec. 4, 2014.
The luncheon was held just days after Town of Conover supervisors
voted unanimously to continue with development of the fully-funded
first section of the trail. That section will be bid out and built in 2015.
The 3.2 mile hard surface biking and walking trail segment will have
trailheads in the Conover Community Park, on railroad grade at Hwy
K just west of Hwy 45, and at the point where railroad grade crosses
Muskrat Creek Rd north of Cty K.
The project includes restoring three water crossings over Muskrat
and Pioneer creeks. All the trail on railroad

grade will be used as a new route for snowmobiles in the winter.
The Packers Foundation grant will be added to the funds accumulating for the next portion of the Conover – Phelps Trail. That
section, all on railroad grade, will extend 5.5 miles east from Muskrat Creek Rd. to the intersection of Cty K and Song Hill Lane.
The Song Hill Lane segment is fully engineered and ready to
be built. GHT will help the Phelps Bike Trail Committee develop
conceptual designs for the final 2 mile segment that will connect
right into downtown Phelps.
Over $1 million, almost two-thirds of the funding needed for
the entire Conover – Phelps Trail, is in place.
Through its annual grants, the Packers Foundation supports
organizations and programs that benefit communities and their
residents in very tangible ways. Grant recipients typically promote wellness, support
families and children, and encourage active, outdoor living.
The Conover – Phelps Trail project aims to do all those things. It has been one of the few bike trail projects
supported by the Packers Foundation.
Green Bay Packers President and CEO Mark Murphy welcomed everyone to the luncheon, saying it was
his “favorite event of the year.” Foundation Committee chairman Charlie Lieb told all the grant recipients
that “the Packers Foundation is proud to support you in your efforts.”
“Being at the luncheon and receiving support from the Packers Foundation is a real sign of approval,” said
Great Headwaters Trails president Jeff Currie. ”It confirms the value of the hard work being put in by towns
like Phelps and Conover who are working with GHT to give foundations and individuals good reasons to
invest and reinvest in their communities.”
More information about the Conover – Phelps Trail can be found at the Great Headwaters Trails website,
www.GHTrails.org. Photos of the Packers Foundation luncheon are posted on GHT’s Facebook page at

parents to ensure students are meeting the requirements needed for
advancement. In addition, each student will have an E-Portfolio allowing the student and family to tailor an educational experience unique to
that student. Students will be held to rigorous expectations.
Students will learn and demonstrate their knowledge in and out
of the school building. Using the scope and sequence as a guide,
students earn learning targets under each subject area. Learning targets are tied directly to the Wisconsin’s Educational Standards. Every subject category has a required number of targets that a student
must complete to earn the credit. Students earn those targets by designing their own projects and/or attending advisor led seminars or
projects. Most projects are inter-curricular. SOAR High School students will be able to participate in all district organized sports and
extracurricular opportunities. This includes all WIAA sports. SOAR
High School students will be accepted by 2 and 4 year universities.
With the emergent of more non-traditional educational opportunities, universities have modified application requirements. Student
rank and grade point average are no longer vital pieces in the admissions process. However, a greater emphasis is placed on ACT and
SAT scores and high school experiences. Determining if the SOAR
High School is a good fit for your child is a very difficult and personal decision to make. It is difficult to say what specific type of
child would benefit from project based learning the most because
kids differ in so many aspects and every child learns differently. We
encourage you to take time researching project based education, attend informational meetings, and ask questions. The reality is that
we will now have two high quality high schools in our district, and
we are confident that your child can be successful in either of these
settings. You just need to make the decision that best fits with your
values and child’s best interest.
Students at SOAR High School will follow the same school calendar as the Northland Pines School District. The school start and
end times will be the same as the rest of the district, 8:25 - 3:25. The
district will provide students transportation from within any area
of our district. Students may also drive themselves if parents approve. After attending an informational meeting and submitting an
application, families are encouraged to set up a meeting with Mr.
Foster SOAR HS Principal if they have more questions. If a student
is open enrolling they need to turn that form in as well. There will
be an informational meeting for new parents on Tuesday, January
6, 2015. The meeting will take place at the Northland Pines High
School LGI at 6:30 p.m. The applications will be available on the
district website and also at each school’s front office. The Northland
Pines School District will begin
accepting applications on January 5, 2015. The window will remain open through the summer,

the students, their families and

From the Pastor's Window
Skip Pullen
is a pastor with
Village Missions,
serving the
Upper Penisula
of Michigan at
the Watersmeet
Bible Church.
In the past year or two, our
church was been able to celebrate the arrival of a couple
babies. One was just recently.
We even have a family in the
church that is expecting another early next year. It is fun
to watch these young lives and
to wonder who or what they
will be. One of my friends was
kiddingly telling his infant son
he could be a baseball player or
even a basketball player when
he got older.
On December 25th, Christians
celebrate the advent, the first
coming and birth of the Son
of God, Jesus Christ. His first
coming was foretold. Isaiah
writes, Therefore the Lord Himself will give you a sign: Behold,
the virgin shall conceive and bear
a Son, and shall call His name Immanuel. (Isaiah 7:14). And Micah wrote, “But you, Bethlehem
Ephrathah, though you are little
among the thousands of Judah,
yet out of you shall come forth to
Me the One to be Ruler in Israel,
Whose goings forth are from of old,
from everlasting.” (Micah 5:2).
The LORD God announced to
Adam and Eve in the Garden,
that He would send the Seed.
Where we can only specu-
late at what these babies in our
church may become, Mary and
Joseph are told. Jesus came to
be the Savior of the world, but
to do so required Him to give
His life. Jesus was born to die.
Yet not just to die, except for
the Lord’s return, we all will
die someday. Jesus came to die
as a sacrifice for our sins. The
angel told Joseph that Mary’s
Son would save His people
from their sins. From the very
beginning, sin has separated
people from God. The Bible
tells us “Whoever keeps the whole
law yet stumbles in one point, he
is guilty of all.” (James 2:10). Sin
condemns a person and we all
have contracted it. It is worse
than any pandemic for it effects
all of us; and worse than that
it reaches beyond this life and
into the next. You or I may not
be a murderer or an adulterer,
but have we ever lied? Have
we ever disobeyed our parents?
Have we ever just once taken
the Lord’s name in vain or stolen? What does this make us? A
lying, rebellious, blaspheming,
thief. Just as one crime makes
a person a criminal, so too, one
sin makes each of us a lawbreaker and sinner.
You may think, “Boy, Pastor,
that’s pretty rough, especially
for a Christmas message.” I
say this, because I have found
it is very easy to dismiss sin
in our lives these days. Sin has
become something that someone else does. We judge it from

our frame of reference and not
God’s. Because sin is so serious, God the Father had to send
His only Son to offer Himself to
be a sacrifice for our sin, so we
wouldn’t perish and be separated from Him. (See John 3:16).
All of us have been tainted by
sin, thus no ordinary man can
be a perfect, unblemished sacrifice for sin. Only Jesus Christ,
God in the flesh, Emmanuel,
who was in the very nature
God, could fulfill that role and
take our place. He could take
our sin and give us His right
standing before God. He gives
us peace with God. Paul wrote,
“…having been justified by faith,
we have peace with God through
our Lord Jesus Christ.” (Romans
5:1). This is the peace spoken of
by the angels on the night of the
Lord Jesus’ birth. The believer
in Christ is no longer an enemy,
but has become a child of God.
Many liberal theologians and
scholars try to water down the
message of Christmas and the
gospel. They try to make Jesus
only a good and moral man.
He is so very much more! He is
the Son of God, Christ the Savior. He came to do the will of
the Father. “For as by one man’s
disobedience many were made sinners, so also by one Man’s (Jesus’)
obedience many will be made righteous.” (Romans 5:19).
The message of Christmas
is one of hope and salvation.
There is forgiveness and cleansing for the one who repents and
believes. God gave us something we needed and didn’t
have. A perfect Lamb without
spot or blemish. He gave us an
opportunity to get right with
Him and provided access to
Him as sons and daughters . . .
joint heirs with Christ. He was
born to die, so as to save each of
us. This gift we can never repay.
Has there been a time when
you called upon the Lord Jesus to forgive your sin and to
be your salvation? Have you
received His gift of everlasting
life? Do you believe on Him for
your everlasting life in heaven?
If not, make this Christmas the
time that you do. Let’s not let
the coming of Christ to save us
get lost in the trappings of this
season. Let’s also look ahead
with great joy and anticipation
to His future coming to take us
to be with Him in heaven.
Merry Christmas and know I’m
praying for you!

to partner with LEAN when they heard about this amazing opportunity. “We wanted to make the gas station health conscious” said store
manager Terry Wasson. “So many customers have different dietary
needs and we wanted to be able to meet those”. With the holiday season quickly approaching, it was an ideal time for them to make some
changes in their store.
The BP now features new color coded tags to help customers easily
find and identify healthier food items that are gluten free, sugar free,
or high in protein. Signage on the outside of building and in the aisles
helps customers navigate the store with ease in pursuit of these new
items. Customers will also find a new fruit rack filled with fresh fruit
displayed on the front counter. “It’s a great way to let customers know
there are healthier items you can buy in a traditional gas station” stated
Terry.
So whether you’re a new customer or a regular returning, be sure to
stop on by the BP today and check out the healthy changes taking place
that make traveling on the road this holiday, a little bit easier.

Health & WellnesS• Rawmazing Holiday Heart Warming
by Dr. Ida Bergman Allen, DC
Dr. Ida has been a
nutritional health
advocate for
many years. She
holds a degree in
Human Biology
and a doctorate
in Chiropractic
Medicine.
True to holiday spirit, I wanted to share with you my absolute
favorite holiday drink indulgences. I call them indulgences
because they taste so great, but
the health benefits abound, so
once again, there's no guilt involved. I LOVE THAT! As you
know, the more raw foods and
drinks you consume, the more
LIFE you have in your body.
I have compiled my top 4 raw
faves. I hope you and your families enjoy them as much as my
family and I do.
The common ingredient in all
of these is cinnamon. Of course
you've heard the mighty benefits of cinnamon by now. Magnesium, fiber, calcium, and iron
top the charts for the nutrients
it carries. Studies also show us
the blood sugar regulation, LDL
(bad) cholesterol lowering, and
blood pressure effects it has on
our bodies. By my testing, the
Vietnamese or Saigon cinnamon
is a leap above the others. Also
take note that if you eat this type
of cinnamon with any fruit, the
cinnamon and the fruit will work
in synergy to create even more
health benefits for you than if
you ate them apart from each
* closed decemb
other. So if you get nothing else out of today's
article, START USING
QUALITY CINNAMON
like a crazy person. :)
Cinnamon Creamy
Hazelnut
2c Hazelnut milk
-soak about 3.5 oz of
raw hazelnuts overnight,
drain and then mix 2 cups of water, a couple
raw pitted dates, a pinch of pink salt, a pinch
of vanilla, and blend until smooth. If you're
okay with the pulp, leave it. Otherwise,
squeeze the liquid through a cheese cloth
and save the pulp for raw holiday cookies!)
1T Raw Honey
1/2tsp Vietnamese/Saigon Cinnamon
Mix ingredients and warm in your dehydrator or over double boiler (use a thermometer and ensure it stays under 116 degrees to
keep all the rawmazing properties!)
Raw Vegan Gluten Free Egg Nog
1 1/2 c soaked almonds (soaked at least 8
hours and then drained. Reminder: soaking
nuts allows the enzymes to be more functional for digestion)
3 c pure filtered water
4-6 pitted medjool dates
1T coconut oil (lightly melted)
1t nutmeg
1/2 t Vietnamese Cinnamon
1 pinch of ground cloves
1 dash of pink salt
Blend almonds for 2-3 mins and strain the
mixture (set the pulp aside and use it for
later for those raw holiday cookies). Rinse
blender and pour strained almond milk
back in. Blend in the other ingredients until
smooth. Warm as above, or serve chilled!
er 24 & 25th....
What Holiday Season is complete without
Hot Chocolate!? By now you must know I'm
a huge fan of chocolate (raw and done right
of course). This one is a recipe that makes
enough for JUST YOU. That's right, you
need a little selfie time.
Soak 1/2 c raw cashews for 1-2 hours.
You'll also need:
2-3 medium pitted dates
3 tsp raw cacao powder (or ground nibs)
1tsp raw coconut oil
a pinch of vanilla bean powder
1c of pure water or warm chaga tea
1 optional strawberry
(it makes it oh so good!)
a sprinkle of my favorite Genesis Raw
Cacao Nibs (you can find on Amazon)
a sprinkle of Vietnamese Cinnamon
After draining the cashews, blend everything except the nibs. If you have a Vitamix,
you can blend it for 2 minutes so it gets warm.
Otherwise you can use the method above to
warm it while keeping it raw. Pour into your
favorite 'me time' mug, add the nibs and cinnamon to the top, and why not garnish with
another strawberry? Now this one is not just
about the drink. It's about making time for
yourself this holiday season. Even if it's only
10 minutes. Thoroughly enjoy your moment
and relish on all the things you're grateful
for this year.

Forest Supervisor, Linda Jackson, announced
that the Final Decision Notice for the Red Pine
Thinning Project has been completed and is
available upon request at the any of the Ottawa
National Forest’s Ranger Stations or at the following libraries: Gogebic Community College,
Ironwood, Michigan; Northern Michigan University, Marquette, Michigan; and Michgian
Technological University, Houghton, Michigan,
as well as the Ottawa National Forest’s website:
http://fs.usda.gov/goto/ottawa/projects.
The Decision was signed on December 5, 2014,
and can be implemented immediately. Alternative 2 has been selected for implementation,
which includes 14,700 acres of intermediate
thinning harvest to reduce tree density within
red pine plantation stands. The harvest of individual trees, or rows of trees in these overstocked plantations, will improve stand health
and provide growing space for remaining trees.
This Final Decision also includes refinements
to the transportation system, including road
reconstruction, road maintenance and temporary road construction, to facilitate harvest operations.
Additional information regarding this project
can be obtained from Barbara Van Alstine, Interdisciplinary Team Leader, at 906-852-3500, ext.
